    - ZwQueryInformationFile Returns Wrong File Size I am using ZwQueryInformationFile to obtain the size of a binary file that contains firmware. Problem is that 3 of the files return the correct size, however two files return a file size off-by-one (-1). So currently I am just doing a cheap hack.     - Signing Error: No Signature was present in subject Setup displays a dialog that informs the user that the authenticity of the driver cannot be verified, and it gives the user the option to cancel the installation of the driver. The system is an Enterprise x64 Server 2003 with SP2. I expected to not see the above message since I digitally signed my driver install files. My driver is a WDM PnP function driver. Since the INF file defines the StartType as SERVICE_DEMAND_START , I only need to digitally sign the cat file. I created the *.cdf file and included the INF and SYS file. I used MakeCat to generate the *.cat file. I am using a Verisign Class 3 certificate. I use signtool to digitally sign the cat file. I use signtool verify /pa /v NAME.cat to verify the cat file was signed. I see the Class 3 Primary Certificate linking to Verisign Class 3 certificate and then to my certificate. All looks official to me. When installing the driver on the target system (Server 2003 x64) I get the warning that the driver is not digitally signed. Here are a few lines from setupapi.txt #I087 Driver node not trusted, rank changed from 0x00002001 to 0x0000a001. #I023 Actual install section: [v6_00.ntamd64]. Rank: 0x0000a001.     - Microsoft DVBT Network Provider Filter does not support two instances in same graph Hello All, As I have seen, looks like two instances of the "Microsoft DVBT Network Provider Filter" do not work properly. Any of you have observed the same behaviour and has found a workaround or something? The fact: I need to play two DVBT streams at the same time on a video card (dual dvbt capable). I create thus both DVBT oaths in ONE graph and run it with graphedit. I can see both rendered windows and work OK until I change the frequency in one of the DVBT providers, it won't work properly. Looks like the frequency property is internally shared with both instances and the last instance created owns the value. Am I wrong or this is a fact? THanks! Juanma, Hamburg. I am testing my driver with driver verifier on all the time, so I guess I am not doing anything in my driver to crash the system. I am attaching log of the crash dump. Hi, I was wondering if anyone might be able to suggest a good range of topics and areas one would need to study/train in to become a sucessful writer of device drivers (ideally for Windows Vista). I've been asked to arrange some training for some of our developers (guys with a good understanding of OO languages and general windows app development). What areas would they need to fully understand and cover before being able to write windows device drivers? (of course I realise in the short term it makes sense to hire people who have these skills but long term I would like to get some of our existing guys trained up).     - What would NULLIFY pIoStackLocation->FileObject->FileName.Buffer ??? In a WDM miniport audio driver, I am trying to handle custom IOCTL by registering a customer interface (using IoRegisterDeviceInterface), enumerating it via SetupDiXXX functions in user mode and using CreateFile to open it. Registration and enumeration all goes well (I verified this via WinDbg, registry and WinObj). However, CreateFile() fails with error code 2 (ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND). When examining the custom CreateHandler that intercepts the IRP_MJ_CREATE call, I was surprised to find out that pIoStackLocation- >FileObject->FileName.Buffer is NULL. Why? What would make it NULL? I thought that it should contain PSP_INTERFACE_DEVICE_DETAIL_DATA's DevicePath that was passed to CreateFile as the first parameter and contained fully valid (and verified) symbolic link name: "\\?\root#media#0000#{GUID-generated-by-GuidGen}" Any clue to how to even start debugging something like this? In Vista, I found that the value of "NumberOfPackets" at USBD_TRANSFER_DIRECTION_IN is constant regardless how you was changing the frequency sampling rates. Is this really a bug in Vista because it works fine in XP SP2?     - Problem with BDA capture driver Hello, I am writing a BDA driver for DVB-T card. For start I have taken a BDA DDK samples (capture and tuner) and modified them to suite my needs. To test how the capture filter works with the rest of the graph (Demux, decoders and renderers) I have made a small stub within capture filter. This stub reads 2 MB of data from the file, which contains dump of transport stream. Then, in the Process routine of output pin of capture filter, I use KsPinGetLeadingEdgeStreamPointer to get the pointer to the first available streaming frame, fill it (Leading->StreamHeader->Data) with data from the buffer, set Leading- >StreamHeader->DataUsed to the actual amount of copied data and unlock the pointer (KsStreamPointerUnlock(Leading, TRUE)). For testing purposes I have created a graph in GraphEdit: Network Provider -> Tuner->Capture->Demux->Audio/Video decoders->Audio/Video renderers. So far so good. The graph can be fully connected in graphedit and started. However it does not produce any audio or video. In the WinDBG I can trace that buffer in the stub is filled with correct data, I see that Process function of output pin is called, that state of the output pin is Run, but no video/audio is produced as a result of the running graph. Can someone help me with this problem? Can I check somehow that data from my capture filter is actually transferred to Demux filter? The functionality of tuner filter is completely stubbed at the moment - it returns OK on almost all requests. Can it be the source of my problems?     - Why Lowerfilter for "MEDIA" Class? Hello there! I found there is a lower filter installed on my computer after I installed a program for a webcam driver. The "Lowerfilter" is installed on following key name, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Anyone knows why they installed a lower filter there? My rough guess is they are trying to capture any audio data from this class, isn' it? If this is true, I just wonder how they did it cause I am also trying to develop similar technic to capture audio data from HDAUDIO.     - PROTINSTALL - Does It Crash Or Not Hi All & Thomas (Devine), I thought I would resurrect this topic since I spent at least 8 hours trying to track down a bug related to it, and I did a search on the Internet and found nothing about it, and frankly, I am surprised that no one else has mentioned the problem. I decided to use PROTINSTALL from (http://www.ndis.com/papers/ ndisinstall/programinstall.htm) to install my NDIS protocol driver. Instead of building the application as is, I decided to integrate the source code into my own application. Thereafter there were many crashes during the InetCfg->Apply() method, which baffled me, because I checked each line of code carefully to make sure I was not doing anything wrong. I read perhaps 30% of Setup API documentation until I realized that that was unnecessary, that the problem must be with my code, or global variable in Setup DLL being trampled, etc. I used BindView, and it did not crash. I compiled a virgin PROTINSTALL and got a few warnings during compilation, but it built, then it crashed too in InetCfg->Apply(). I labored at this until I found... DAMNIT...SETUPAPI.DLL generates spurious exceptions that are caught by the GUI message pump in BindView but otherwise not. So PROTINSTALL, which does not invoke InetCfg->Apply() through message pump chain will crash, as will my application, but not BindView. Thomas, were you aware of this? Note that Apply() is not the only SETUPAPI.DLL that generates exceptions. I counted at least 8 being generated during debug session.     - NDIS Miniport/Intermediate Driver Calling Each Other Hi! I've written an NDIS IM driver and a virtual miniport driver (based on the netvmini driver). I think what I'm proposing here will work, but I wanted to get feedback from other folks first. I want to have the virtual miniport driver call functions within the IM driver. Similarly, I'd like to be able to do the same thing with the IM driver calling functions within the virtual miniport driver. What I thought I could do is define a proprietary OID, which the IM driver can use to set its entry points to the virtual MP driver. Similarly, the IM driver can query the virtual MP driver's entry points through a query of another proprietary OID. As long as these entry points aren't pageable functions, this should be OK. Naturally, the IM driver would have to clear its entry point table whenever the virtial MP adapter is unbound. And, yes, I already have a proprietary OID I use in the IM driver to determine which bound adapter is the virtual MP adapter.     - Vista NDIS Miniport Enable/Disable Problems Hi! Has anyone else seen this? We have an NDIS Native 802.11 miniport driver for Vista on both 32- and 64-bit platforms. On 64-bit, we see a large delay during miniport initialization following subsequent enable/disable/re-enable passes, so that each miniport initialization takes longer than the previous one. At some point, the OS seems to freeze or response very slowly (e.g., the cursor takes forever to move following a mouse movement). We don't see this on 32-bit. In XP host, in the very first PnP (a fresh RNDIS driver installed), the packet filter, sent by XP RNDIS driver in a RNDIS set message, is always 0. It is suppoesd to some non-zero values like direct, multicast, broadcast... However, the subsequent PnPs, the correct packet filter value is always be sent. However, sometimes this does not seem to be the case.     - [VISTA] Driver blocked from loading: why? Hi, I have a small and simple device driver that doesn't monitor any hardware. It looks like the tracedrv sample from the WinDDK. This is a port from a Win32 device driver. The source code compiles for the amd64 target without any warning or error from the Windows Vista and Windows Server Longhorn x64 Free Build Environment. This driver is not installed but dynamically loaded from a service (32-bit). When the service tries to load this device driver, Vista "blocks it from loading due to an incompatibility with this system". Which incompatibility? It's an amd64 dual core system. The driver is not digitally signed for the moment but I have started Vista with the Disable Digital Signing Enforcement option. I'm clueless. Any idea? Our device is currently driven by an HID kernel-mode driver in the W2k/XP platforms and basically performs read/write operations aside from the power/pnp functionality. I was able to do this with multiple entries in the boot.ini under Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Server 2003, but is this possible with Vista? It looks like there is one {debugsettings} definition which defaults to serial and is changeable to 1394 which is globally inherited. Perhaps I'm missing it, bit I do not see how I can have a debugsettings with serial and 1394 configurations defined together on a system. Is it one or the other only?     - Accessing configuration space of PCI-express bridge Hi, I've been searching a safe but fast method to access the configuration space of a PCI-e bridge/switch. We're building a device with multiple FPGA's behind and PCI-e bridge. To configure these FPGA's after power on, we need to send a byte stream (several Mbytes) to some of the bridge's I/O pins by writing one byte at a time to one of its extended configuration space registers. I've been looking at three ways to do this: 1. Writing directly to the PCI configuration space registers using WRITE_PORT_UCHAR(). This is the method suggested by the vendor of the bridge. This however is considered to be unsafe and, as far as I know, will not allow our driver to get thru the WHQL tests to get signed (the latter being an requirement as we are targetting 64-bit Vista). 2. Sending, from a driver or from a user mode application, IRP_MN_WRITE_CONFIG DeviceIoControls to the pci driver. This method will probably be slow as we'll face the overhead from an I/O operation for each byte that needs to be sent. 3. Getting a BUS_INTERFACE_STANDARD driver interface standard from the bridge device allowing us to have direct access to the functions that write data to the configuration space. This would be our preferred method since I believe it is safe as well as fast. Both methods 2 and 3 require some kind of handle to the bridge's device object. Thus far I did not find any method to get such handle. The bridge (which is owned by the pci.sys driver) does however not have a SymbolicName that I can use as input to IoGetDeviceObjectPointer(). It also does not export any device interface that I could query using the SetupDi functions in order to obtain a device information path that I can use as input to CreateFile(). It works fine when installed standalone, but it seems like it thinks that another component is using the driver and so does not want to remove it.     - what driver design for an Embedded controller based device Hello all, I am in the process of architecting a driver, for a thermal-monitor ACPI device sitting in the LPC bus. The h/w is ready, but the firmware, which exposes this device to the host(CPU),is yet to be written. The firmware team wants to know, what type of device register access is needed for the windows driver. Since there are no REAL device registers(hardware) in the device, it cannot be a simple I/O port access, where the host ( CPU ) uses IN/OUT instructions, to access these. Even an index/data pair register access will NOT work , as in a PCI config access through CF8/CFA. With these h/w limitations... So the choice, boiled down to 2 options. The firmware SHALL provide 1. An embedded controller style interface to read/write data or 2. A mailbox type As you all know, the EC style is the old IBM PC keyboard controller access method. command/status and data at 0x60 0x64 or 62 ? we write a command to one register and wait for the data to be available, by waiting on a bit in the status register. ( hopefully less than 10 micro-seconds to support a decent ISR timing ) I prefer this design, rather the mailbox type. But on researching the DDK help and WEB ( a series of connected pipes...LOL :-), i could find NO information, on how to design a driver for this kind of EC device. The DDK help for ACPI device drivers and the accompanying sample ACPISIM, doesn't suit my requirement. So, I turned to the ACPI specs, whereby they have provided guidelines for the OSPM ( like windows ) to access the EC, like GPE routing, _Qxx ASL methods etc., they suggest a PNPID of PNP0C09. Interestingly, windows XP loads/uses ACPIEC.SYS for this, but there is NO information on how to communicate w/ this, or whether I am permitted to bypass this and access the EC directly from my driver. Summary 1. What type of driver to write for an embedded controller ACPI device sitting on the LPC bus ? That is, no real device register access through cpu IN/OUT instructions, but through EC style access 2. What part does the microsoft supplied ACPIEC.sys play in this ? Can we use this, if yes, how ? and if not, is it safe to bypass this, to access our device directly ? Note : this is for XP and up. This miniport stuff is so confusing... :-( If I were writing a generic WDM driver, my AddDevice() routine would first call IoCreateDevice() - which allocates an FDO that can be used to store the *class* interface's Symbolic Link Name in the DeviceExtension. It then would be used in the subsequent call to IoRegisterDeviceInterface() - in the same AddDevice() routine! This is how the books & samples that I read do it. But... in the world of audio miniport drivers (PortCls) IoCreateDevice() should not be called. Instead, PcAddAdapterDevice() is used. It allocates an FDO and does all the necessary initialization (like DeviceExtension) for the "instance of the calling miniport driver". This is great, but it doesn't do any interface registration (please correct me if I'm wrong here - or anywhere in my posting). Instead, it specifies the name of a StartDevice() routine that will be the one calling... PcRegisterSubdevice(), not IoRegisterDeviceInterface(). Now, this is where I get confused: Is PcRegisterSubdevice() a substitute for IoRegisterDeviceInterface() - similar to the way PcAddAdapterDevice() is for IoCreateDevice() ? The WDK documentation says: "The IoRegisterDeviceInterface routine registers a **device interface class**, if it has not been previously registered". And: "The PcRegisterSubdevice function registers a **subdevice** to make it available for use by clients". To me it seems that "subdevice" is not the same as "device interface class". Am I wrong? So... does the PortCls system register **device interface class** ? If so, where does it do it? (It certainly doesn't do it in PcAddAdapterDevice()). If not, why not? How on earth does such a driver make the device(s) available to applications and other drivers? And what happens if I try to call IoRegisterDeviceInterface() anyway? Would it fail?
