    - Writing kernel API functions Can anyone direct me to documentation on how to write, or whether it is feasible to consider writing, a kernel API function that permits a kenerl component, such as a device or filter driver, to initiate communication with a user-space service? I have a need to develop something like the Event Log API that is available for device drivers or the WMI interface.     - printer driver signing Hello, Does driver signing requires the driver to be associated with hardware device. For e.g:- If I have a printer driver which acts as a format convertor(lets say converts to .doc format), how can I get this driver signed? I feel it is possible to have computer policies which restrict installation of drivers which aren't digitally signed. So I would prefer to get them signed. Any insights here with the above case.     - decrypt WPA group key Hi, This probably isn't the best newsgroup for this question, but probably the ones knowing the answer can be found here :) During WPA group key handshake using TKIP I will recieve a key encrypted with RC4 I have used OpenSSL to decrypt and that works fine, but I would like to use CryptoAPI.     - Terminal server and windows 2000 Printer driver Hello, Can someone explain me this behaviour:- 1) Installed my printer driver on machine A locally on 2000 terminal server. 2) Connect to machine A from a 2000 professional machine "vipin" using remote desktop connection and login as USER1(this is in administrative groups) 3) Connect again to machine A from 2000 professional machine but with login USER2(Administrative group rights) Observation:- Each time I connect, I see a new printer getting created of the form printername\vipin\session0 printername\vipin\session1 .... and makes it the default for the session. Everytime I logoff the session, the correspomnding session instance gets deleted. It would have been fine if there were one session instance viewable in the session's printer folder, printer session instances of all the sessions to the Terminal server are visible. In addition there is a printer of the form "printername". These are viewable also when you log as a user on the Terminal server itself. So I installed the Microsoft drivers(one's that come with the operating system using Add Printer), I make connections, I don't see the behaviour.     - "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" during installation of a PnP printer device. Hi All, I have a strange problem with a Printer INF file that I don't know how to resolve... I have created an INF file through MS genINF tool. The printers included in the INF file support serial, parallel (IEEE 1284) and USB interfaces and as you may suppose the parallel and USB interfaces support PnP. The file in my opinion is a correct one and when I install the driver without "Automatic Windows detection wizard" but with manually choosing the Printer port and driver location all the things work fine. The installation wizard copies the driver files successfully to windows driver directory. However during the driver installation for automatically discovered PnP printer (for example with USB interface) when I choose "Specify a location" in "Locate Driver Files" dialog page and after that "Next" Windows locate my INF file as a correct driver INF file but when I press "Next" button the following message appears in the next dialog page: "An error occurred during the installation of the device. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.". I have tried the mentioned procedure on 3 different machines and always get the same result (Windows 2000 SP4). That is why I suppose that the problem is not with the directory but with the INF file.     - Help! layered drivers lead to Blue Screen Dear All, I develop a layered driver for a usb token including 3 part. Enum.sys -> VR.sys -> key.sys Enum.sys is a enumerator to enum key, VR.sys is the driver for virtual smart card reader and key.sys is the driver for the key. Now, I meet a problem, I write a PC/SC application to send APDU sequentially to my token, but some time when I surprisedly remove the token, the system will crash and show there is a 0x000000ce fatal system error in VR.sys. That means there is an operation not cancel in VR.sys when key.sys unload. I think may be when the token removed, the VR will delay to get the message and the application still send IRP to VR.sys, so it will cause system crash. Is that right?     - Multiport Serial I am writing a kernel mode driver for a PCI card with 16 serial ports. It is a WDM style driver, and in my INF file I've made the class "Multiport Serial" (GUID 50906cb8-ba12-11d1-bf5d-0000f805f530). The driver archetecure is based on the multifunction example in Walter Oney's 2nd edition WDM book. In the AddDevice routine for the child part of the driver, I'm calling IoRegisterDeviceInterface, using the GUID that the serial driver uses for the same call (86e0d1e0-8089-11d0-9ce408003e301f73). None of the 16 child devices seem to appear to the system as serial ports. Hyperterminal does not recognize them. Although the Device Manager shows a Multiport Serial entry, with the 16 devices (and the controller/parent device, which I really don't want users to see), it does not list them under Serial Ports. What exactly does "Multi Port Serial" mean to Microsoft? If not RS232 type serial, then what was the intention? Does anybody know why the DrvDocumentPropertySheets() is called with a completely blank DEVMODE structure and both the DM_IN_BUFFER and DM_OUT_BUFFER flag set ?? According to the DDK this DEVMODE should be copied into the drivers internal DEVMODE (overwriting my default DEVMODE values), but afterwards this blank DEVMODE (now my internal DEVMODE) seems to follow me anywhere in subsequent program execution??     - intermediate driver link rate reporting I have implemented an intermediate driver for Win2K with tapi support. The link rate indicated in the dialer is not right. The rate given at the time of installation( as a response to tapi calls) is always taken, & the rate given later is not taken and shown by the dialer. I put the following lines in the GPD file: *Command: CmdBoldOn { *Cmd : "<1B>E<01>" } *Command: CmdBoldOff { *Cmd : "<1B>E<00>" } *Command: CmdUnderlineOn { *Cmd : "<1B>-<01>" } *Command: CmdUnderlineOff { *Cmd : "<1B>-<00>" } When I print a bolded or underlined text (with a printer font) in the output stream there is neither CmdBoldOn , nor the CmdUnderlineOn sequences. At the beginning of the print stream there is a CmdBoldOff and CmdUnderlineOff but never the CmdBoldOn and CmdUnderlineOn. There is no difference if the text is bolded or not - the printer always prints the one and the same thing. If the text is underlined it prints the text and a bitmap under the text (this bitmap is the underline). It is a kind of simulation of underline I guess. For a bolded text I expect to see something like this: <CmdBoldOn sequence> <text><CmdBoldOff sequence> and for the underlined text - <CmdUnderlineOn sequence> <text><CmdUnderlineOff sequence> but unfortunately I do not. Tell me please what's wrong with it? Why the driver treats the printer like it does not have bold and underline "On" commands? 2. My device has some font commands like: <font select><char sequence><terminating string> This sequence has to be sent to the printer uninterrupted (without any other printer commands in it). I put the <font select> in the UFM->UNIDRIVERINFO->SelectFont, the <terminating string> is 0x00 - it is convenient to be at the beginning of the commands which follow, the <char sequence> is a sequence which comes from the GTT. The problem is that in the output stream (the print stream) some times contains CmdXMoveAbsolute. Of course the result is that the command execution fails. Is there a way to control the appearance of CmdXMoveAbsolute or any other command from the GPD except *Order (it does not fit in my case)? Thank you in advance. Describe again: I built my own IRP and URB in a NDIS-WDM driver for receiving data from USB device, but after set a completion routine and call IoCallDriver() to send my IRP down to the lower driver, the completion routine will be called immediately with a status code 0xC000000D and the URB_STATUS is 0x80000300L. I checked the two error codes, they mean I build the URB with wrong parameter(s). I thought a possibility is the buffer size was set to a wrong value when I call NdisAllocateBuffer() as below to create MDL, so I tried to modify the buffer size to fit the usb endpoint's maximum transfer size (64 bytes, bulk transfer), but the system crashed after perform IoCallDriver().     - USB_ENDPOINT_DESCRIPTOR oddness I am trying to read the wMaxPacketSize from the USB_ENDPOINT_DESCRIPTOR of a device so that I can set the MaximumTransferSize to an integral multiple of the wMaxPacketSize when I set up the interface and I am getting some odd values. The device in question has 4 alternate interfaces, each with 2 endpoints - the default control endpoint and a high-speed ISO endpoint. The USB_ENDPOINT_DESCRIPTOR values for the control endpoint all look quite reasonable, but the ISO pipe values are kind of cooked. In particular, for the interfaces that are supposed to be full and half bandwidth, the reported value of wMaxPacketSize is 5120 (which I believe should never be higher than 3072) while the default interface (which I believe should be using no bandwidth) is 384. Now, my question is, is the data in USB_ENDPOINT_DESCRIPTOR directly copied from the hardware device (in which case I should be talking to the hardware guys), or is it massaged alot by usbdi (in which case I could be calling usbdi incorrectly or there could be some other bug)? Any ideas? As an additionaly bit of data, when I actually select the full bandwidth interface, the packet size I get from the USBD_PIPE_INFORMATION is indeed 3072. If this is a hardware problem, I am kind of surprised that USBDI is not whining more severely early on given that the hardware is reporting invalid values. Can Microsoft sign the filter driver + its class coinstaller DLL for the
CD/DVD-ROM stack, which inserts itself between IMAPI and the storage port?

The class coinstaller is needed with the sole purpose of patching the
LowerFilters value for the newly arrived hot-plug (SBP-2 or USB) drives, and
injecting our filter below IMAPI, so that IMAPI's SCSI traffic will also be
monitored.
