    - support grayscale 8bit image in video capture device We would like to support grayscale 8bit image in video capture device like UsbIntel. We can support UYVY format image. I changed KSDATARANGE.SubFormat into MEDIASUBTYPE_RGB8 from MEDIASUBTYPE_UYVY. But Amcap image color didn't gray 8bit bcz I didn't initialize color Palette. When our capture driver received SRB_GET_DATA_INTERSECTION, I added grayscale Palette to end of KS_DATAFORMAT_VIDEOINFOHEADER. Amcap image color became to good. But NetMeeting image color didn't gray 8bit bcz NetMeeting software don't send SRB_GET_DATA_INTERSECTION. What should I do for supporting grayscale 8bit ? Your help will be greatly appreciated.     - how does GDI handle cursor? Hi all, My problem is one application set a cursor. One one adapter, it's alpha cursor. On anonther one, it's color cursor. And it seems their data both are wrong. I think maybe display driver's some behavior cause GDI converting wrong data. Some hints and Questions. MSDN said "The LoadCursor function automatically selects the most appropriate data for the current display device. " Does it means when we load a bitmap as a cursor , GDI will convert bitmap data to be multiple data (include color cursor and alpha cursor) and store them as resource? We noticed that our debug built network driver runs faster (more throughput) than our free built driver.     - [amd64] Exception in MM resulting in elevated IRQL Hello, It looks like I hit OS bug -- your expert opinion would be _greatly appreciated_. Failure scenario is following: 1) FS filter driver called to service IRP_MJ_CREATE (PASSIVE_LEVEL). At some point, implementation calls CcCacheWrite(WAIT) to update cached metadata. 2) As memory page found non-resident, MM calls driver with IRP_MJ_READ/IRP_PAGING_IO request (at APC_LEVEL). nt!CcCacheWrite -> nt!CcMapAndCopy -> nt!MmCheckCachedPageState -> nt!mAccessFault -> nt!IoPageRead -->filterread 3) Reads being issued to lower-level driver, and request successfully completes, with STATUS_SUCCESS returned. 4) However, nt!MmAccessFault implementation, right after returning from nt!IoPageRead() calls nt!MiWaitForInPageComplete(). It throws ACCESS_VIOLATION (c0000005) right up to CcCacheWrite exception handler. [CcCacheWrite documented to throw INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES and must be invoked at < DISPATCH_LEVEL] Trouble is, once exception is caught, we are now at DISPATCH_LEVEL, and it goes downhill from here. Problem occurs on Win2K3 2cpu amd64, with 100% repro: Windows Server 2003 Kernel Version 3790 (Service Pack 1) MP (2 procs) Free x64 Product: Server, suite: Enterprise TerminalServer SingleUserTS Built by: 3790.srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447 Product is mature and runs on x86 or Itanium platforms without anything similar ever noted. It is possible, of course, that something in the paging IO read handling provokes the bug, but I see nothing obviously wrong; no problems were noted before.     - Pending PCPropertyRequest Hi, I'm trying to pend a PCPROPERTY_REQUEST and complete it at a later stage. My code snippet is below. What I observed is that the PropertyRequest seem to get completed in the end even though I return STATUS_PENDING. From DDK, this seems to be all that is needed to pend the request. I need to pend the request as I cannot complete it now. Can anyone advise me on this?     - Point-to-point tunnel interface I've been looking at how to develop a tunnel interface, similar to what we find in Linux/*BSD environments, tun(4). This interface is seen as a point-to-point interface, and can be read/write into to move packets in and out of the kernel. This is really useful to create new tunnel encapsulation methods (IPv4-over-IPv4, IPv4-over-UDP/v4, IPv6-over-*, etc.) On Windows, information is available to create a NDIS miniport driver, but this approach would make the driver "ethernet-like" (broadcast interface) instead of p2p. Consequence is one has to handle things like ARP and such to make that interface appear as p2p. I believe the same applies to an IM driver approach. It appears like the approach should be a something like a NDISWAN driver, where this interface is seen be the operating system as a "Tunnel Adapter", but without the L2 framing (PPP, etc.). I am using IoAllocateIrp() and IoAllocateMdl() for the irp creation. The expected behavior is this irp will get status_pending in return and the real hardware change will trigger the completion routine gets call. The custom HIDMini driver now calls IoMarkIrpPending and return status_pending for this irp. But the firefly filter halts at the call of IoCallDriver(). PIRP irp = IoAllocateIrp(NextLowerDriver->StackSize + 1, FALSE); irpSp = IoGetNextIrpStackLocation(irp); irpSp->MajorFunction = IRP_MJ_DEVICE_CONTROL; irpSp->Parameters.DeviceIoControl.IoControlCode = IOCTL_HID_GET_FEATURE; irpSp->Parameters.DeviceIoControl.OutputBufferLength = FeatureReportLength; irpSp->FileObject = fileObject; irp->MdlAddress = IoAllocateMdl( report, FeatureReportLength, FALSE, FALSE, (PIRP)NULL ); ... ... IoSetCompletionRoutine(irp, GetFeatureCompletionRoutine, Context, TRUE, TRUE, TRUE); status1 = IoCallDriver(NextLowerDriver, irp); <--- this call never returns I wonder since the mini driver Marks the irp pending and return status pending, why the GetFeatureCompletionRoutine never gets triggered and the "status1" code never gets assigned any value. Is it because the Hid class handle IOCTL_HID_GET_FEATURE synchronously?? So the irp will not come back until it is completed? In that case, what method should I use to send a irp down to get the hardware event? I am also considering to assess the "Extra Information" and "Raw button" field in the MOUSE_INPUT_DATA struct, as long as the custom mini driver can fill in these field.     - To lock, or not to lock, pages... Ok, I inherited a basic Windows USB driver that handles pushing data across a couple of bulk pipes. This driver works fine under Win2K, but eventually crashes XP/SP2 with a page fault error... Now, this driver takes a large user buffer and chops it up into nice USB-able sized blocks. It allocates a MDL and then re-uses it over and over again, freeing it once the entire transfer has been shoved across the bulk pipe. Never does it try to MmProbeAndLockPages(), which I found odd.. but it works under Win2K.. So my question is: should I put in MmProbeAndLockPages() for the user buffer? And if so, before or after IoBuildPartialMdl() (I think before since the user buffer needs to be resident, right)? I'm somewhat clueless, so apologies if this is a dim question.     - Win98 Keyboard driver for exclusive control of PS/2 keyboards Greetings. Is it possible to write a Win98 keyboard driver that is dedicated only to PS/2 keyboards? The reason is that I've toasted the built-in keyboard of my notebook (Microflex, FlexNote 595). An external keyboard has been plugged to the PS/2 port, but unfortunately, the internal one still refuses to relinquish its grip with the system. As both keyboards share IRQ 1, wonder if there is any chance of customizing/re-writing a keyboard driver so that it's able to analyse the source of the interrupt and ignore anything except from the PS/2 port.     - 1394 Virtual Devices And Writing To Host Config ROM Hello All, I can successfully add a Unit Directory to the my first pc's 1394 Host Config ROM to represent my virtual device. And I can verify that the host's config ROM contains my new unit directory and text leaf by using my FireSpy tool. My unit directory looks just like the "NIC1394" unit directory which I guess is added by windows at boot time. When I connect a second pc containing a 1394 host controller, the plug and play manager of the second pc does "know" that there is "new hardware" listed in the first pc's config rom and it trys to find a driver for the new device. However, the new hardware found dialog on the second pc always displays "Unknown" instead of the device string information I wrote to the Text Leaf in the first pc's config ROM. Is there some magic to adding a Unit Directory to a 1394 host config ROM? There is very little documentation on how to write to the host config rom to emulate hardware.     - Unable to remove USB-based AVStream Device safely Hi, I'm new to AVStream development and got stuck while unloading my device. Basically I have a Philips 1583 USB controller connected to my PC in the hope that I can capture a video stream from it to my PC. I created a AVStream minidriver and I could enumerate the device successfully.     - Questions about driver install using DIFx I'm trying to install a network filter driver using DIFx2.0 and got two questions: 1. DIFx2.0's document for DPInst says that the DriverPackageType has to be either ClassFilter or PlugAndPlay. Does this mean they don't support drivers of other types anymore? DIFx1.1 used to support more than the two types. Why the upgraded DIFx supports less types? 2. Our driver has two inf files, say a.inf and b.inf. I used "Network" as their driver type anyway and put them under the same directory of the DPinst.exe. After installation, the Device manager shows two copies of the network filter, where there should be one item only. The a.inf lists b.inf under the [SourceDisksFiles] section.     - HID and DirectInput ? (WDM Driver hidgame) Hello, I modified the poll function of the hidgame example of Windows XP DDK for my device and I recompiled the driver. I installed the driver and I added the registry keys. I go in the Game Controller panel, I add my joystick controller. When I test my driver in proprieties it function. I can see when I push on a button. When I go in a game, I can select my joystick driver. But the problem is that I can't assign a function to a key of my device. And the keys presets by the game when a select my device don't function in the game. I ask to me if it's the hid descriptor that is in problem. But it is generate by code written by Microsoft in the hidgame example. I would like to know the solution or to have a reference which could inform me on this. Thanks you!     - Question on 'Safely Remove Hardware' for Flash card (usb mass storage) Hi -- I have a program running that saves files on a flash card. It processes the WM_DEVICECHANGE message for DBT_DEVICEQUERYREMOVE and closes its open files and returns. But, when I use the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon, I get the system message that the device can't be removed - try again later. This message happens before I return from the WM_DEVICECHANGE notification. It appears that the system only gives me a very short window in which to get the files closed and then complains. It uses the services of the lower driver(s) to access descriptors and activate the selected interface. So my question is, do we need to call MmUnmapLockedPages for un-map the page which mapped by MmGetSystemAddressForMdlSafe or MmGetSystemAddressForMdl, if it is no longer need. And, how to check it is mapped or not?     - 64bit issues After years of procrastination I finally upgraded my development environment and test lab to support 64bit builds and test systems. That's the good news. The bad news is that the 3790 ddk x64 compiler is failing on me with rather hideous frequency. This guy was using the 3790 DDK. So I looked at my build configuration and lo and behold, for everything except WDF drivers I am using the 3790 DDK. It seems that the 3790 DDK doesn't actually reliably support x64 builds. Before you say "well just go use the 3790.1830 ddk", I thought the same thing. However there is a reason why I'm stuck on 3790: the last released IFS kit is 3790 and I need bits and pieces from that to build all of the stuff I build. So I am sort of stuck. The WDK has all of the IFS bits, but it is beta. The 3790 ddk is unacceptable. It is very recognizable because there are two KEVENT structures in a row. The arrow above points to the first one which is this KEVENT the main thread is blocking on, 0x84af861C. This makes sense from as the waiting list pointers, 0x84555968, indicate one element in the list and one that is very close to the thread in question, 0x845558f8 (and indeed SoftIce tells me my thread is the only wait thread when I query the event). I am assuming that this first parameter to IopAcquireFileObjectLock is some subcomponent of a file object which contains a number of different events. Unfortunately, none of this information helps me. I can find no relation between this thread and the thread that seems to be related to the problem. The !locks command sounded great until I realized it only works on, well, locks. Everything is blocking on events and a such I am not sure how to determine what the lock-up is. I am kind of assuming that two threads are waiting for events that the other is supposed to signal. But it is not at all clear to me how I would determine that this is the case. Does anyone have a suggestion how I would best proceed? I am quite confused as to why the LoadLibrary would block on that particular handle because the dll is not in memory prior to the LoadLib call. Thus it should not be possible for someone else to be using the file handle (or object) in a way that would cause a lock. Furthermore, the other thread is blocking on an IOCTRL to a completely separate module (obviously). It occurs to me that the parameters being fed to KeWaitForSingleObject (00000001 00000000 ffffff01 as per Args to Child above) look suspicious - perhaps a wild pointer. Are those the real parameters or is KeWaitForSingleObject using a calling convention that makes this analysis invalid? From my read of things, the first parameter, 0x00000001, should be the object to wait on. Or is it possible that there is some process wide lock that is being held for some reason rather than a lock at a file object level? At any rate, any help would be much appreciated as I am more or less stumped at the moment. This is a multithreaded app running on XP communicating with a software only NT style driver. The basic symptom is the app opens two handles to the driver. The main process thread uses one handle for "fast" IOCtrls (meaning from the apps standpoint it does not care how long the driver takes and assumes that time will be short) and the other handle is used in a secondary thread that makes "blocking" calls (meaning the app assumes that the driver will take a long time to satisfy the request - which of course is true). In this case, the secondary thread does indeed block for a very long time as it is being used to set up a "call back" from the driver. When the driver wants the usermode app to execute some command, it completes this ioctrl which then makes the thread run and the command be executed. The trouble I am having is that after the ioctrl is pended, the main app thread does a LoadLibrary, which hangs for ever. If I comment out only the IOCtrl (leaving the secondary thread creation and general operation intact) the LoadLib is happy. Unfortunatly there are a number of other threads running around to complicate things, and of course the possibility that the driver is silently hacking something always exists, but from my current analysis is seems pretty likely that this one thread blocking on an ioctrl is the culprit. My "analysis" in this case being the obervation that commenting in and out the ioctrl call nicely turns on and off the error. Is there any fundemental reason that I cannot block in an ioctrl and then expect a loadlib to work? I know for example that there is a "Load Lock" somewhere in LoadLib that you can get into trouble with (by for example loading other libs within the libmain of another). Is that used by IoCtrls as well? (BTW, softice tells me that the call stack of the main thread is in the CRT io_init of the dll that is being loaded. The last few functions are NtQueryVolumeInformationFile,NtWriteFile,KiUnexpectedInterrupt). Or is this more likely some subtle stupidity on my part?
