 - Strange exception, please help I'm having a problem that I hope you can help me solve. My code is throwing an AV in the startup code in a way I've never encountered before. The instruction that causes the AV is: 006472E0 832D907FAF0001 sub dword ptr [0x00AF7B90], 0x01 The exception is: Access violation at address 006472E0. Write of address 00CC7B90. 0xAF7B90 is a variable in my BSS segment. 0xCC7B90 is outside of my address space. The code is in the initialization section of a 3rd party component which is called from the startup code, well before any of my application code executes. What I don't understand is how the above instruction could cause a write to an address different from the specified address. It seems suspicious that the addresses differ only in the 2nd byte. Thinking that I might have a hardware problem, I've swapped the CPU and memory in my computer, but the problem persists. I don't have a spare motherboard to swap in. This problem comes and goes depending on the address of the above SUB instruction. If I comment out a single line in my code, the SUB instruction appears at address 0x6472CC rather than 0x6472E0, and the instruction executes properly, subtracting 1 from the DWORD at 0xAF7B90.  - Packect Filters/Drivers Hello all Thax for the suggestions if any. The work is meant for Windows CE. Some of the questions are generic to all of Windows. Ethernet, WAN ============= Assumptions about NDIS hook filter driver: a. Ndis Hook driver resides between Tcpip.sys and Ndis.sys (in NT/2K ) b. Replace NDIS.SYS function pointers(addresses) with new hook function addresses. c. So NDIS.SYS calls these new functions and new ones can call the original functions etc. 1. Under windows CE is this Ndis hook driver possible? (I guess YES. but usually replacing the NDIS.SYS addresses etc. might cause system exceptions in CE. doen't it?). 2. If yes, then Ethernet is okay. Meaning, it sits between tcpip and Ndis 3. But for WAN cases in CE, TCP/IP talks to PPP(No Ethernet emulation like NT/2K). PPP is a NDIS protocol driver in CE. So how do you hook this driver between these 2 protocols drivers? 3. If its not possible, Does a TDI driver type work in WAN case? Bluetooth ========= In case of bluetooth, different profiles use different stack paths( at least in CE ) Examples 1. A Serial port application goes thru RFCOMM to L2CAP 2. PAN NDIS driver goes to L2CAP directly. (I think TCP/IP talks to PNDIS). 3. LAN access profile goes thru TCP/UDP --> IP --> PPP ---> RFCOMM ---> L2CAP. How would one control bluetooth activities? a. Since more than 90% of the data flow goes thru L2CAP(rare cases hit HCI directly), Is there a way to develop a driver just above L2CAP and analyze the packets? Of course this may not be the useful place for encrypted packets, but we can control some. b. HCI Stack Extension Layer could be a solution?. If we develop one of this over L2CAP, could we selectively block the traffic? c. Any kind of hooking filter or TDI driver is helpful for this traffic? Thanks for the help and suggestions.  - 16 Bit PC Card and resource problem Hi, This issue might have already answered many times on this post. On some laptops I cannot install the PC Card and as per the initial investigation looks like to me no memory available to address by 24 bits. I have tried modifying the inf to specify (D) for MemConfig and that maps the device on the higher address range addressable by 32 bit and gets installed properly but since it is a multifunction card I cannot get the functional device working, I get error 10. Once I specify (D) do I need to do anything else so that system and PC Card controller will be able to map the addresses properly?  - Passing a Synthetic Write to a lower level Filter driver Hi folks, I am fairly new to the WDM Driver world. I have written a lower filter driver to view some serial port traffic,and now I want to be able to write to the driver my data - vs just passing down data from upper filter drivers. I got that working using iobuildasynfsdrequest with the MJ_WRITE ,and the lower Serial.sys driver responds with the correct response too. However - here's the problem - if any other application,eg hyperterminal has this port open,then that app also gets the writes from my driver. I tried queueing the IRPs from the above filters too-that did not work. So my question is this:how do I prevent my writes being "read" by other upper filter drivers? Have I layered my driver wrong?  - dispatch and completion routine in filter Hello, I wrote a dispatch routine for MJ_WRITE which splits the Systembuffer (IRP) into several characters and creates a new IRP for each. When I return STATUS_SUCCESS in the completion routine the pc reboots immediately without showing a blue screen. Returning STATUS_MORE_PROCESSING_REQUIRED and sending only one character to the filter is leading to a closed loop output of the incoming char. But there is no following blue screen or reboot.  - 1394 Surpise Removal I have a two 1394 cameras setup and I run into an error which causes my application to never exit the task manager. The application goes through the entire shutdown process (even the destructor of the main frame) but the process seems to still be running. I cannot kill the process but it eventually dies (~10 minutes or so). Disconnecting both devices at the same time while the application is running causes the following behavior: 1) WM_DEVICE change leads to a getDeviceList (using the setup api). 2) Setup API returns 1 device present which is technically not correct. 3) My app tries to do a REQUEST_ASYNC_READ to determine if the device is valid. 4) This 1394 driver fails the submit to lower device with an error of NO SUCH DEVICE. 5) Because I did this read, the application does not shutdown properly.  - How do OEMUI and OEMUNI communicate? If I use an interface plugin for unidrv (oemui) to gather some user information via a dialog box, how can this information get passed to the oemuni plugin? Basically, I want to pop up a dialog when the user slelects print, get a pathname and some other attributes, then have the unidrv oemuni plugin store the bitmaps and the other user information from the dialog box to that folder. When I try the same code with a different SPDRP value it works fine, but when I use SPDRP_FRIENDLYNAME I get the error INVALID_DATA. Any suggestions?  - Cancelsafe queues for W2k I'm compiling my XP driver for W2k, using XPSP1 DDK 2600.1106 with the Win 2K Free Build Environment. When linking i have this error: csq.lib(cancelapi.obj) : error LNK2005: @InterlockedExchange@8 already defined in ntoskrnl.lib(ntoskrnl.exe) objchk_w2K_x86\i386\cancel.sys : fatal error LNK1169: one or more multiply defined symbols found As mentioned in another thread, i tried to compile the cancel example (src\general\cancel). First it compiles without error, but when i try to use "InterlockedExchange" in the cancel example i have the same error as for my driver.  - Utility to view the list of system virtual memory blocks Hello, I search an utility that is able to display the list of system virtual memory blocks. I create a driver that must map a big memory block to non-paged system memory. Sometimes the function MmGetSystemAddressForMdlSafe returns a null pointer.  - Using DocumentEvent from OEMUI plugin I am trying to catch the DocumentEvent event in a unidrv UI plugin. I used the sample code in the DDK and changed the IPrintOemUI to IPrintOemUI2. The problem is I don't get any MessageBoxes displayed. I put a MessageBox in GetInfo() as well and that gets displayed so I know the correct plugin is loaded.  - A doubt on handling IRP's I am writing a storage filter driver and need to keep track of all read/write requests. So for every device (volume) that I monitor, I have a small cache in the device object (in device extension). As soon as a read/write request comes in, I add this info to this cache. I need to synchronize access to this cache. So I have a mutex (wont work on multiprocessor but this is just a demo) which guards the code that manipulates the cache. All this is working fine but I am kind of doubtful about this access to the cache. Since I am adding this synchronization object to keep track of the IRP's, I am kind of slowing down the behavior because of the synchronized access to the cache. Every Read/Write request will have to wait to access this cache. So I am kind of skeptical about this design. Is there a better way to do this?  - Detect video rotation Many recent notebook computers have added various features to rotate the display either to switch between portrait and landscape, or to rotate 180 degrees (usually, the argument for this is that in Japan, they like to sit across the table from their customers and flip the display so that it's face up to the customer but upside down to them). Detecting the difference between portrait and landscape mode generically is pretty easy (if nothing else, you can look for a WM_DISPLAYCHANGE message and see whether X or Y is bigger). However, I haven't (in a very short amount of searching so far) figured out any way to generally (i.e. not dependent on video driver) detect a 180 degree rotation.  - installing driver "FROM" a Service during startup Calling OpenSCManager() to install a driver from a service that is automatially starting during system start appears to "block" after the SCM has determined that the Service has hung. Why is this? What can I do to install a driver at service * system start time. DETAILS: I have a service that is automatically started on system startup. During service start it installs and creates a driver. This works fine starting and stopping the driver using the MCC Service manager. However, it "blocks" during system startup but does load successfully -- placing a number of eventlog entries in the Service I see: Service starting (time x) Service ready to call OpenSCManager() to load driver (time x+1 second) SCM reporting Service "Hung" (time x+10 seconds) Service finishes call to OpenSCManager() and successfully loads driver (time x + 11seconds to 1 minute!!!) Service started When starting under MCC Service manager it starts in a second or two. Under system start the Service components all start very quickly, except the call to OpenSCManager does not complete until the SCM loading the Service declares the Service Hung. What gives?  - Kernel Streaming and WAVE_FORMAT_EXTENSIBLE Hi folks, Been debugging an audio playout minidriver (under stream.sys), and slightly surprised about what I'm getting for data formats. Put simply, I have a 20 bit PCM audio stream, which I want to play out via the driver. I *expected* that when it came to opening the stream, I'd have something like this: For the sake of brevity: "pSrb->CommandData.OpenFormat" = "Format" from now on. I expected Format.DataFormat.MajorFormat = KSDATAFORMAT_TYPE_AUDIO Format.DataFormat.SubFormat = KSDATAFORMAT_SUBTYPE_PCM Format.DataFormat.Specifier = KSDATAFORMAT_SPECIFIER_WAVEFORMATEX And indeed, I get all those things. Then, for the 20 bit audio file I was testing, I was expecting (Format is cast to PKSDATAFORMAT_WAVEFORMATEX) Format.WaveFormatEx.wFormatTag = WAVE_FORMAT_EXTENSIBLE Format.WaveFormatEx.nChannels = 2 Format.WaveFormatEx.nBlockAlign = (probably 6, but further data in extensible).  - problem installing hardware device I have a problem when I try to install a new hardware device. Maybe this is not the right group to post this question, but I'm sure that someone here can help me. - This problem occurs when I try to install a new hardware device. I have the same problem with 2 different devices from 2 different vendors (a PCMCIA wifi card, and a USB wifi device). - I've installed the software coming with these devices. I also tried with the latest version I downloaded from internet. - When I plug in the device, the 'found new hardware' wizard starts up. After a few seconds, I get the error message 'An error occurred during the installation of the device'. The system cannot find the file specified'. I think the missing file is a system file (not a driver file), but I don't know which one. - When I click then 'Finish' (the only possible choice), the wizard stops and restarts immediately. - I also trieed to add the hardware from the device manager, with the same result. - Below, I add the logging from setupapi.log (after increasing the logging level).  - How to preinstall USB driver files Our customer wants to deploy mobile phone synchronisation software. Clients are running W2KPro, users do not have admin rights. We would like to preinstall the USB driver files. The goal is that users can simply plug in the USB cable and synchronize their mobile phones.  - Virtual Printer Driver Hi gents, I'm writing a Virtual Printer Driver based on the MsPlot Example. The thing where I'm struggling is that have to change the resolution depending on a configuration entry, eg. Restry, INI File.... So I started to change pPDev->lCurResolution value within "DrvEnablePDEV". Things are working fine with Notepad, my own Printing Application but it doesn't work with MS Word nor does it work with CorelDraw. It does also work with MS Word and CorelDraw if select the Properties Dialog from within the Printing Dialog and leave the Dialog with OK, afterward the Resolution is accepted. So every time I change the resolution depending on the configuration value I've to select the Properties Dialog from within Printing Dialog to work with the right resolution, thats my problem.  - When does ImageProcessing Actually Get Called in a Print Driver? I am a little confused as to when the ImageProccessing function gets called in the OEMUNI dll. The documentation says: "The method can return the modified bitmap to Unidrv or send it directly to the print spooler." However it seems to be called by spoolsv.exe which I thought was the spooler. So how can ImageProcessing send the data back to Unidrv or to the spooler if it is already being called by the spooler. I trying to follow the flow of execution so I can get a bitmap driver running fo a project that I need to demo. Also, my ImageProcessing function is only called once. As a result all I seem to get is the top of the page. I know that the bitmap is supposed to be banded but I only seem to get one band.  - How do you set a break point in a Print Driver. I am trying to step through the OEMUNI example in the DDK examples. I have tried using WinDbg but can't seem to figure out how to set a breakpoint for the method ImageProcessing or other methods that are in the example. I am confused becaus If I attach to notepad.exe WinDbg won't know about the ImageProcessing function because it is in a dll that gets loaded depending on which printer I select.  - OID_802_11_SSID and slow DHCP When I use the OID_802_11_SSID to associate my 802.11 adapter to an access point it takes several seconds before DHCP completes and it gets an IP address.
