Running Vista 64 bit Ultimate release. Can't get Vista to properly stop the
USB pin drive.

When selecting to "Safely Remove Hardware", the correct dialogue windows
pops up, I select Stop, confirmation window displays to stop the device, I
select OK and the dialogue tells me it' safe to remove the USB pin drive.

However the USB pin drive LED is still lit suggesting the device is truely
not safe to remove.

Anyone else seeing this?

I guess the only work around is to shut the system down and remove the pin
drive.

Hopefully this gets fixed in Service Pack 1.

Buggy LED :-) if Windows said it is OK to remove - then it is OK to remove. The
LEDs are never correct indicators about OK to remove, Windows UI is.

I didn't know that. So on a Windows XP Pro system, this USB pin drives LED is
turned off by the Windows UI, but in Windows Vista 64 bit, for some reason
some code was left out of the Windows UI to turn off the LED.

Please elaborate.

No Windows Vista still keeps the device alive which is not the best idea
i saw. A hard disk cannot spin down in that situation. I already
discussed with a developer who wants to detect that situation to make
the device spin down nevertheless.

in vista, the port/device is not powered off which keeps the LED on, while
on XP the device was turned off during pnp remove. this is change was by
design

What is the rationale behind that? On USB IF a mass storage developer
already wanted to spin down the device despite Vista keeping it alive.

The USB pin drive's LED is a meaningless little colorful toy.

It's meaning is not standardized. It can, for instance, be switched off on
START STOP UNIT/Stop. It can be switched off on powering the device down
USB-side. It can be switched off due to lots of other cases.

So, only Windows UI is trustworthy. Windows knows what it does.

I see no sense in that. You don't want to keep the device alive and possibly
ruin the integrity of data on the pin drive? What is the thought process
there? Wait till a user shuts his box down?

Caches are flushed anyway. Integrity is not ruined.

As stated the caches are flushed so the integrity is retained.
The reason to spin down and shut off the light is to signal the user
that it is safe. I think MS has goofed here. The user does not trust
Vista telling it is safe to remove. It trusts the drive spinning down or
the USB stick switching off the LED.
Yet my advice to the device developer was to not counteract Vistas
decision to keep the device alive.
