    - using %llx in WPP Message Hi, i am trying to switch a driver i am writing from using KdPrintEx() to WPP. I would like to still be able to switch to KdPrintEx, so i defined a -func DbgTrace(FLAGS,MSG,...) if i want to use KdPrintEx i basically just disable WPP and #define DbgTrace as KdPrintEx. ( i just read, that i could maybe use WPP_DEBUG to dump to debugger instead... will investigate) Anyway, my prints include %llx to print a ULONG64... if i build, i get errors: "error : (ParsedFormatString::init)Type 'll' not found." and the .tmh file is not generated... If i replace %llx with %lx, i don't get the error anymore, but a warning about the type mismatch (unsigned long vs. ULONG64)...     - SetupAPI failures on Vista I have a driver installation application that installs a miniport adapter device programatically(through inf) which is accessed by user-mode applications through raw file access api like CreateFile(). The driver installation application used setupapi and is always successful on XP but fails randomly on Vista. When it fails WinObj tool shows a corrupt symbolic name under 'globals' (Example: HWID_{GUID}JunkCharacters) and i don't see the device entry created under 'devices' of WinObj...but all the registry entries are ok. Due to this my user-mode application fails to open the adapter. This is the sequence of calls i make in driver installation program...     - networking withing scsi miniport driver Hi, I am writing a scsi miniport driver which will be used for booting from its scsi disk. Basically there is not going to be any physical disk present. We are going to use the linux Network Block Device (NBD) server and this scsi miniport is going to be the NBD client. Fot this i need to implement networking either within the scsi miniport or will have to use/develope some other network driver to do the network related stuff. Please guide me how i can implement networking withing scsi miniport or if required which network driver i will require to develop for getting the network related stuff (TCP) from this network driver.     - StorPort driver won't overlap commands from another driver Commands submitted to a SCSI StorPort driver in Windows Server 2003 will not overlap. Standard R/W SRB's are being submitted to the StorPort driver via another driver. A compressed summary of the other driver flow is: Get the host adapter device object via IoGetDeviceObjectPointer(). Get driver object from host adapter object Get physical device object from driver object. (This ends up being a handle to \device\physicalDriveX) .... .... Allocate IRP via IoBuildAsynchronousFsdRequest() set completion routine via IoSetCompletionRoutine() fill SRB and submit ansync R/W request via IoCallDriver() to physical device object. Major function IRP_MJ_SCSI. This method overlaps commands properly when submitted to a SCSIPort driver. However a StorPort driver does not return from the IoCallDriver() request until the command has completed. The identical code works properly with SCSIPort drivers. Any thoughts as to why the StorPort driver won't overlap commands when submitted via another driver?     - How to get EMF bits from a print processor? Hi all. I have read all the DDK documentation and the archives here talking about print processors, EMF vs RAW spooling, etc. Ashwin's posts have been quite informative on this subject. One thing eludes me, though. Like many others, I am trying to get access to the EMF (more precisely, the EMF in the spool file, I am aware of the file formats, etc.) to extract the text from it. Some of the previous threads on the subject said that the print processor would be the place to do that. Problem is: how do I get access to the EMF from the print processor? From my understanding, the print processor requests and receives EMF *handles* before giving them back to GDI with GdiPlayPageEMF. Can you call GetEnhMetaFileBits with this handle? This seems unlikely since that function expects an HEMHMETAFILE, not a HANDLE -- unless the HANDLE is really an HENHMETAFILE? Or maybe treat the handle as a pointer to the EMF bits?     - SCSI miniport-Custom Log messages Hi, Is it possible to generate custom error log messages for SCSI miniport driver? I tried the following but no luck: 1. Created a message (.mc) file, compiled and generated a corresponding .rc and .bin file, as per WDK and sample code. 2. Updated .inf file for event log as mentioned in the WDK and added .sys file to look for messages. 3. Calling StorPortLogError() with this custom error ID. After installing this driver, an event is getting logged in the event log, however it complains that itâ??s not able to find the description. The following message is displayed in the description instead of my custom error message. â??The description for Event ID ( 11 ) in Source (xyz) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer.     - DbgBreakPoint in WDF When I turn on the WDF Verifier, a DbgBreakPoint is being hit when I call WdfRequestCompleteWithInformation(). The strange thing is that this breakpoint is hit if I call an ioctl with a .NET client, but if I call the same ioctl using Win32, then no breakpoint. As far as I can tell, everything looks fine in the debugger up to the point where the break point is encountered. If I turn off WDF verifier, then everything works fine.     - Device Driver is not listing under Device Manager My Device Driver is non-plug and play driver, but I implemented AddDevice routine.     - How to get device notifications during machine hibernation/resume? Hi. If I hibernate the machine when my program encrypts/decrypts a removable media, I get some issues at a driver level - seems system undergoes some media changes during hibernation. So, I'd like to be informed of that media changes in my service, which drives the encryption/decryption process. Is it possible to accomplish via 'RegisterDeviceNotification' API? I tried some stuff, and actually managed to get device notifications when the user safely removes/ inserts removable media; but there were no device notifications during machine hibernation.     - Multiple Spinlock acquiration for protection of concurrent port ac Hi everyone, I have a very special spinlock question which I am not able to get an appropriate answer by carefully reading any documentation. Consider two different spinlocks: Spinlock A & Spinlock B (Systemspinlocks) There is a hardware port that should be protected against multiple accesses: Port For accessing the port, i acquire let's say Spinlock A (Implying that i release spinlock after access properly). Due to different instances of the class that handles "Port out" and "Port in" i also have different spinlock objects therefor it might happen that concurrently accesses to the port are protected by different instances of the spinlockobject. The big question is: Is this approach practically save in a SMP environment? The background: We are in need of a very high accurate port frequency near to realtime, so using other dispatchobjects like mutex, events, asf. is absolutely inadequate (we already tried them) As i know, by acquiring the spinlock, priority is increased to DISPATCH_LEVEL, but due to the nature of SMP paralleltasking i presume that another CPU might get a different spinlock instance even though other CPU owns the other spinlock instance. Or is any spinlock instance atomically?     - Session based access to mass stoarge devices Hi, I've developed a virtual usb bus driver. This is deployed on WinServer2003. Now the problem I'm facing is, whenever a new mass storage device (a pen drive, cd rom, floppy drive etc) is enumearted on this virtual bus, the new "removable media" appears as a drive in all sessions.     - Unexpected STATUS_VERIFY_REQUIRED from the lower level driver Hi! One of my application's functionalities is transparent ecryption/ decryption of storage, including removable media. Two main components are used for this purpose: 1) a service which drives the encryption/ decryption, if the user selected a specific drive to be encrypted or decrypted; 2) a filter driver, which filters read/write requests from the system, also handles control requests from the abovementioned service to encrypt/decrypt media. Here what my problem is. When I select some removable media to be encrypted, the encryption process starts and continues normally. But when I try to hibernate the machine during encryption, STATUS_VERIFY_REQUIRED is returned from the lower level driver, which means that the system has undergone some media changes. After that the encrypting function in my service throws an exception and the encryption worker thread ends its execution, thus encryption doesn't continue after I resume from hibernation. I tried the same procedure for fixed drives - it passes normally, there was no STATUS_VERIFY_REQUIRED. So, is it possible to avoid from getting STATUS_VERIFY_REQUIRED from the lower level driver when hibernating machine during removable media encryption? I don't have the time to write a FS Filter Driver, my app really needs to come out pretty fast. I thought of using the KeServiceDescriptorTable hook method. I've read some posts on OSR and no one really recommended this method. I believe that if I stick to some really simple things in the hooks, and only hook few functions, the driver will work fine.     - howto check for Registry write permission without UAE dialogue? Hi again, before I write some values to HKLM/SOFTWARE, i want to check, if the current user has the appropriate right to do that. (Otherwise, I will only read the values there and use them as a template for HKCU/SOFTWARE and continue writing there) In the past, I tried to write, got an error and GetLastError() told me, the current user has insufficient permissions. This is - of couse - the quick and dirty way. And now, with VISTA, this is a completely /wrong/ way. So I want to complete my routines with a "ceck permission BEFORE accessing". But most of them looking very confusing and complicated. Others seem to only work in different networking infrastructure, as domains or such. Found: NetUserGetInfo() + NetGroupGetUsers() GetSecurityInfo() PrivilegeCheck() LsaOpenPolicy() + LookupAccountName()/LsaLookupNames() + LsaEnumerateAccountsWithUserRight() AccessCheck() very confusing!     - AlphaBlend/Alpha Bitmap support in Unidrv I am currently developing a rendering plug-in for Unidrv. My output device can support Alpha Blending. I can't seem to find any way to receive anything with alpha blending in it. I've tried to hook DrvAlphaBlend, I've tried added support for CHECKPNGFORMAT, I've tried loading a BMP with an alpha channel and then trying to BitBlt it, AlphaBlend it, etc. If I call AlphaBlend and disable all alpha support, then the GDI will call my OEMStretchBltRop (with no alpha info of course). If I try anything else, the GDI just won't call my driver at all. Am I missing something or is alpha support just something you can't do from a print driver. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Intially i used WdfRequestRetrieveOutputWdmMdl/ WdfRequestRetrieveInputputWdmMdl but it always failed with STATUS_BUFFER_TOO_SMALL. So i used the request parameters to get the pointer. If I want to evaluate the ACPI method under the child device(_DCS, _DGS, etc.), as I know, WMI-tunneling is a way to achieve it.     - WLK not-error message!! I am getting ready for driver signing. I compiled and tested my drivers in WDK 6000. I was trying to install WLK 1.2.6475.0 to do necessary tests. It first complained I have to uninstall WDK 6000 because it is "legacy component". I dont understand this but uninstalled WDK 6000 anyway. Then I ran WLK hoping it may install newer version of WDK. It didnot. Then I thought may be I have to install newer version of WDK 6001 myself later. Let me atleast install the "driver test manager" for now. But then it says "No configuration scenario meets install criteria". I have no clue what this message mean. Should I now install newer WDK 6001 or something and then run this WLK later?     - SCSI Miniport in Hibernate Mode Hi all, We've got a SCSIPort Miniport style driver that is hanging the system when it goes into Hibernate mode. We've tracked down where its hanging to a prefetchw assembly instruction. This gets inserted during optimization, and as such, this driver only fails when using the free build. The checked build works fine. My question is whether there's a way to turn off certain aspects of compiler optimization. Specifically, the generation of that prefetchw. If we change the code around a little, we can either get the code to jump over the prefetch, or make sure the compiler doesn't create it. But those solutions add a bunch of memory accesses, which is not ideal since this is in a critical section of code. We suspect that the problem is that prefetchw is not supported on an Intel processor, which is what we are running the driver on. We have not yet had a chance to test this out on an AMD processor. We are using the Microsoft C/C++ Optimizing Compiler Version 14.00.50727.278 for x64. We've tried different flags for changing the optimization levels, but it either creates code that doesn't work, or doesn't optimize at all. We've also tried the /favor:EM64T flag, but that doesn't seem to have an effect. I've noticed other compilers have ways of turning off prefetching specifically, but I couldn't find anything that does that in the Microsoft C compiler. So, I guess my question is, does anyone have either a solution or workaround to our problem, as well as any ideas why a prefetchw instruction would lock up the computer during hibernate mode? I've noticed when I am connected to the target machine (both machines are running XP SP2) with WinDbg, that if TraceView is running on the target machine, "Invalid parameter passed to C runtime function" messages are displayed in WinDbg. These messages seem to be displayed whenever a trace message is posted from my driver. Interestingly, they also seem to be displayed whenever I simply pass the mouse over the TraceView app on the target machine. If TraceView is not running on the target machine, the "invalid parameter..." messages are not displayed. Is this normal? If not, does anybody have any idea what the problem could be?     - Internal Queues and Start IO Hi All, I am porting WDM SCSI port driver to KMDF. The WDM driver has startio routine and maintains IRPs with internal queues. For WDF version i am planning to create a default queue and forward it to the read/write queue when required. Default queue and read/write queue are both sequential queues. I am not sure if this queuing would work out for me. I have gone through KMDF serial sample for IRP queuing. I think i need to go in similiar lines for managing queues for IRPs and startio routine.     - How to force discarding of invalid cached partition contents? A USB hard drive contains a FAT32 partition. Sometimes the partition has a drive letter assigned. When the partition has a drive letter, Windows Explorer and/or some other parts of Windows XP read and cache a portion of the contents. I write part of the partition myself, so I want to force Windows to abandon its cached contents. I call DeviceIoControl several times. FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME, FSCTL_DISMOUNT_VOLUME, IOCTL_VOLUME_OFFLINE, IOCTL_VOLUME_ONLINE, and FSCTL_UNLOCK_VOLUME. All of these succeed. WinIoCtl.h doesn't define IOCTL_VOLUME_OFFLINE and IOCTL_VOLUME_ONLINE, but MSDN implies that these are supposed to be available to user mode applications, so I define them myself and DeviceIoControl reports success. After that, I have found two ways to do manual operations to force Windows to abandon its cached contents. One is to use Computer Administrator - Disk Administrator, remove the drive letter from the partition, and reassign the drive letter to the partition. The other way is to open a command prompt and run CHKDSK /F, which finds no errors but which somehow persuades Windows XP to discard its cache. If I omit the /F then the obsolete contents remain in the cache, after which Windows proceeds to corrupt the partition and then the next CHKDSK /F adjusts errors (but lost data remain lost). Now I want to do this programmatically. I wonder why obsolete contents remain in the cache after IOCTL_VOLUME_OFFLINE and IOCTL_VOLUME_ONLINE, but continue trying anyway. I added calls to BroadcastSystemMessage with DBT_DEVICEREMOVECOMPLETE and DBT_DEVICEARRIVAL. These report success. Furthermore if Windows Explorer was displaying the partition before these operations, I can see Windows Explorer respond by removing that partition from its display, displaying the contents of another partition, and then restoring the drive letter and icon in the left hand pane though the right hand pane continues displaying the other partition that it had switched to. So I think that DBT_DEVICEREMOVECOMPLETE and DBT_DEVICEARRIVAL have some amount of effect. But when I click on that drive letter in Windows Explorer, it still displays obsolete cached information, and creating a new file causes corruption in the partition.     - Monolithic Storage Driver - Partition Creation Failure Using diskpart or the DM UI, initializing our drive fails to create a basic disk (MBR style) intermittently. This failure is timing sensitive and can change across reboots or even insertion of benign dbg traceouts. We have a monolithic storage driver for our device. We see the failure across all versions of Windows. The following show's a failure case using the diskpart CLU. DISKPART> select disk 1 Disk 1 is now the selected disk. DISKPART> clean DiskPart succeeded in cleaning the disk. DISKPART> create partition primary The disk management services could not complete the operation. ******* When using the DM UI, we get the following popup error message when trying to init the disk - "The operation did not complete. Check the System Event Log for more..." in the event log there is a entry saying the following: "VDS fails to write boot code on a disk during clean operation. Error code: 57@02070006."     - Security enforcement for a 1394 IOCTL I use an IOCTL request (Create 1394 virtual device) that passes from my 1394 driver to lower windows drivers in 1394 stack where a virtual device is created. This IOCTL is successful in Windows Vista only if the application is "Run as administrator". I want to modify this behaviour and make it available for normal application (without bumping to admin). On a laptop I recently procured (a Dell Precision M4300) I enabled "USB Wake
Support" in the BIOS which was turned off by default. Now, the Windows XP
Pro (SP2) I installed *prior* to enabling "USB Wake Support" in the BIOS
does not have the entry "USBBIOSx"=DWORD:00000000 under
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\usb' (in fact
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\usb' doesn't exist at
all). So (from a driver I have developed) would I be able to issue a
Wait/Wake against a device I was about to put into D2, and have the
Wait/Wake complete when a Remote Wake activated the device? Note that the
device in question is capable of signalling a Remote Wake, and the system
will remain in an S0 state.
