    - NDIS IM driver DriverEntry called repeatedly with Window 2003 We have developed an NDIS intermedoate driver and also notify object to support our driver. In build prior to 1289 ============== When the first virtual adapter is created the Driver Entry is called. Thereafter the Driver Entry is not called even if more vritual adapter are created. Build 1289 and 1421 ============= The driver entry is being called when each virtual component is being created. With reference to notify object after 'ApplyRegistryChanges' and before 'ApplyPnpChanges' the IM driver gets triggered. For some reason with build 1289 and 1421 the halt routine is being called which triggers the driver being unloaded even though there are some VLAN already on the adapter. Thereafter DriverEntry is being called once again. This behaviour is not seen in earlier builds of Windows 2003 MUX behaviour ========== I observed the same behaviour even with the mux sample in DDK. Please advice as what is the change due to which the halt is being called in 1289 and above causing the driver Entry being called with each VLAN creation. - Sriram.     - Unidrv and CommandCallback inconsistencies Often times, when implementing a callback or other custom functionality in UniDrv, UniDrv's overall behavior changes rather than simply calling my callback or running my function. The help implies that the CallBack is instead of sending the "*Cmd" command. Is there any way to stop this?? It's hard to code this way :| Example 1: CommandCallback for CmdYMoveAbsolute Result: UniDrv calls my callback to send Y coordinates for EVERY scanline (even "*b0W") as if "*CursorYAfterSendBlockData" was set to NO_MOVE and not AUTO_INCREMENT. Replace the CallbackID with a "*Cmd: " string and it works as documented. Example 2: Implement IPrintOemUni::FilterGraphics Result: UniDrv no longer compresses the scan line data blocks as if there weren't any compression entries defined (including OEMCompression).     - Unattended null driver installation I have an interesting device driver installation problem that I can't seem to make any headway on. Basically I am trying to make it so a normal user (non-administrator) can install a null driver. My company makes custom PCI hardware. We are moving to XP and have a legacy non-plug and play driver that runs our cards. This driver works fine. However, XP still thinks that each of our cards needs a driver installed and pops up the "Found New Hardware" wizard when the system comes up. I have come across the solution of a null driver. Apparently this is a .inf file that is just a placeholder for the legacy devices. Putting this inf file into the system32\inf directory allows the system to install the null devices correclty. Since the driver isn't WHQL certified, XP won't install the null devices without displaying the "Found New Hardware" wizard. This is fine as an administrator, but we have machines in the field running as a normal user. As a normal user XP pops up an error that says, "You must be a member of the Administrators group on this computer to install this hardware." In my research I've found that a normal user can install drivers if they are signed correctly. However, I'm don't think that WHQL will sign a null driver. So, I seem to be stuck. Is there any way to get around this problem? Is there a way to allow normal users the rights to install unsigned drivers? Can I somehow get a null driver signed?     - Printer driver device fonts bold/italic/underline Hi, I have been updating a previously written monolithic (non-minidriver) printer driver. The printer has its own fonts that it can render as bold, italic, and underline. Do I have to implement an IFIMETRIC structure (via DrvQueryFont) for every possible combination of device font style? For example, lets say the printer has a 16 CPI font and that font (via printer commands) can be represented in bold, underlined, italics and a combination of all 3. So, there can be: 16 CPI Normal, 16 CPI Bold, 16 CPI Italic, 16 CPI Bold AND Italic, etc. Do have to set up this many IFIMETRIC structures that only have the fsSelection member as a difference? Once you add up other printer fonts (14 CPI, 12 CPI, etc) there ends up being an astronomical amount of fonts. There has to be a way to just have one a IFIMETRIC structure for the 16 CPI font and have DrvTextOut receive some indication that the font needs to be bold, italic or underlined somewhere.     - I need suggestion on how to implement a barcode reader for win2k I have an old barcode reader that can connect to a serial port on my windows 2k computer. I would like to scan any barcode and it would appear on the console where ever the application is; sort of like a keyboard. How do I go about doing this.     - Executable Memory in a Driver Is there any way to allocate executable memory in the kernel? The docs do not indicate whether the ExAllocateXxx() APIs will do this. From my understanding, they aren't supposed to, and it will BSOD on XP SP2.     - Accessing Printer Device dependent information Hello, I apologize if this is not the place for this questions, and I also apologize for the fact that it may sound uninformed, because, well, it is. I am writing an application to set default printer settings prior to printing pdf documents through Adobe. I am using the WinAPI functions from WinSpool.drv to get and set the properties. The DEVMODE structure works great for the device independent information, but I need the device dependent information as well. Stapling can be used as an example. The DocumentProperties API call returns the DEVMODE structure along with the device dependent (apparently called private date according to a webcast I just read) from the device. Microsoft says that you are not supposed to touch the driverExtra information with DEVMODE, but should use the UNIDRV instead. Are there any examples of this? Does anyone have any examples of how to change any default printer settings (like stapling) programmatically? I appreciate an insight into this. Thanks!     - DDK and spaces in path? Hi, After converting our driver product build environment from VS.NET 2003 (which compiler is not supported for drivers) into a DDK BUILD project (using a makefile project and ddkbuild.bat), I notice that all our build servers and most of our development stations no longer can build this driver, due to spaces in the build path.     - my debugger is soooooo slow Can anybody help me out with this really anoying issue? I am using WinDbg 6.2.00.13.0 and at one point the debugging was really fun since everything was going in almost realtime. So now suddenly the debugger "thinks" about every step for minutes it seems and it really stinks to work with it. I have the symbol path set first to the Web address for symbols and then to a local directory. What is the resolution for this issue?     - File System Access to Proprietary Device We have proprietary device that can be accessed via various networks using a proprietary communication protocol. Some of these devices expose some high level file I/O functions, e.g., Find First File, Find Next File, File Read, File Write, Create, Delete, etc. What we would like is to expose the contents of these devices on a Windows client in a manner similar to a mapped drive or a USB memory/jump drive.     - Packet Queuing in MPSendPacket() function Hi, I'm writing a Ndis Intermediate Driver derived from the Extended Passthru Sample. I want to copy some outgoing packets to an application by completing a pending IOCTL-Request. But what to do if there isn't any pending IOCTL-request? I know, that I should queue the packet for dealing with it later, but I don't know what is the usual way dealing with this situation. I read something about setting packet status to NDIS_STATUS_RESOURCES, but this seams to be too easy (and the wrong way I think :-)) Thank you for your advice, Christian Beckel P.S.: Another question: When the packets return from user mode, I think I should implement a new function which builds a new NDIS-Packet and sends it down to the NIC.     - x64 and DDK and WIA Hi, I have installed the 2003 DDK. And want to start work porting a WIA Driver. Firstly I tried building the example code Wiascnr under the IA64 free enviroment. This created Complilation errors d:\winddk\3790\inc\crt\string.h(59) : error C2371: 'size_t' : redefinition; diff erent basic types my own code produces simialar errors...     - unhiding hidden partition on the fly Several PCs I work with every day have hidden FAT partitions that are used for booting into DOS at times. Since Windows does not see the hidden partition there is no direct way of accessing the data. Currently I am using a user mode tool that directly accesses the hard drive and does all the FAT interpretation by itself so I can read and write files to the partition. I was wondering if it was possible to write a filter driver that would reinterpret the hidden partition into a 'normal' partition and also make it removable, so I could mount the partition on the fly and rely on Windows file system code instead of doing it myself. Would such a driver be a upper storage filter driver of a file system driver? Also would I be able to mount/unmount the partition without rebooting the system?     - How to read HID Descriptor using URBs (in a driver) Hi All, I'm writing a HID Miniport to transform a USB device that has 2 HID interfaces into a single HID device. To do this I'm sending raw URBs down to the device in response to IOCTL_HID calls from above. I'm basing my driver on Walt's HIDFAKE sample together with code from his USBINT sample (startup code). So far so good - I can read the config descriptor, interface descriptors and endpoint descriptors! But I can't work out how to read the HID class descriptors for each interface. AFAIK it's embedded in the config descriptor but can't seem to tickle Parse[Configuration]DescriptorsEx() in order to access them. Walt touches on this but says it's "out of scope" for the book. While I'm here, next step I'll need is to read the report descriptors. Is this done via the same interface, or will I be sending more control channel requests to the device?     - Unique Identification in 'Remove Device' list Hello, I have a USB DD that carries data from a simple data collection device to the Windows software. Each device can collect data for a few points and subsequently some users will want to plug multiple devices in. All of this works fine...well, there are problems but it wouldn't be software if it worked perfectly. My question is: I would like to be able to alter the string that shows up in the 'remove device' list (in the system tray) so that it says (for example) Stop DataRecorder (345) Stop DataRecorder (346) Currently it shows simply: Stop DataRecorder Stop DataRecorder All of physical devices have unique serial numbers.     - harm of using same GUID for setup and device interface class? Hi, I have a proprietary USB device and it is installed using a new setup class ( and GUID ) in the INF file . However in its USB client driver , i also register the only device interface that i would like the driver to support using IoRegisterDeviceInterface function in the AddDevice handler . However i am using the same GUID for this device interface as the one which i am also using in the installation INF as an Setup Class GUID . MSDN tpoics sugegst that this is a bad idea . Hi , The MSDN topic at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/install/hh/install/setup-cls_f439d4d3-234f-4952-ab5a-a14899fbe5f3.xml.asp suggests that first IoCreateDevice should be called and then a driver should register any device interfaces with IoRegisterDeviceInterface. Does thos order matter? what could possibly go wrong if i call IoRegisterDeviceInterface first and then IoCreateDevice?     - Screen capture Hi, I am about to create a screen capture application, this app should require minimal amount of system resources and should have a small impact on performance. The captured data should then be sent through the net for storate or runtime consumption. A. I have considered using windows media for that BUT capturing the screen using WMT require a large CPU precentage... B. I have also concidered writing a mirror display driver, this will hook the GDI API and would be able to send the instructions to a remote computer for playback/storage ( this is a similar way to the way windows terminal client works ), This option require immence development efforts which are not available... C. The last option is to hook to the the existing Terminal client infrustructure and to use it to record the terminal client sessions: C.1. Is it possible to interface Terminal client sessions this way? C.2. Is there any exiting Terminal client sessions I can use? C.3. I have understand that Terminal Client use the T100 protocol is ther any detailed documentation of the way it is used by the Terminal client?     - IRP Buffer Overflow Hi, I am new to the Windows video driver and applications. I am working on a USB video device for Windows XP. I can use AMCAP to select my usb device with a black screen. I traced the data going into Windows through URB layer but I see a lot of buffer overflow (ntstatus code) messages coming from the lower layer using IRPTracker. It seems to me that video data is lost in the layer below IRP. I have the following questions: 1)Where should I start to look at the buffer overflow problem? 2) Where is the place that the video data is putting together as a video frame and then passing up to the next layer? After I build a deployment project, there are several modifications that I need to perform on the msi with the ORCA editor, is there any way to automate these steps? In particular I need to assign an INF file to the DPINST merge module, fiddle with some properties, and finally remove the All user/ just me stuff from the dialog. Are there scripts I can run against the ORCA tool that will do these things?     - User warned that he should reboot after HID device first plugged i We make a custom HID device, and we use the standard HID device drivers provided by Microsoft to talk to it. Our device shows up in the Device Manager as a USB Human Interface Device. Each of our devices reports a unique serial number during USB enumeration. The first time that a specific device with a given serial number is plugged in on an XP system, there is a delay as the system finds the device drivers for the device. If this device is unplugged and then replugged in later, there is no noticeable delay after plugging in. If our application is running when the device is plugged in, we process WM_DEVICE_CHANGE messages, and look for what is plugged in by running code that calls dynSetupDiGetClassDevs, etc. to walk the device database looking for devices with our USB vendor and product ID's. We also check that the SPDRP_CONFIGFLAGS property is set in an attempt to verify that installation for the device is complete. If we find a device matching these criteria, we open it and start communicating with it. Sometimes, we get messages from Windows warning us that we need to reboot. This only happens if our app is running and we have opened a device that was just plugged in for the first time. I believe that we are opening the device before Windows has finished with the HID device driver initialization for the device. How can we avoid getting the reboot warnings from Windows?     - Direct data transfer between two devices? My goal is to directly transfer data in off-screen surface inside video card memory to another PCI card without the relay of system memory. I have the device driver source code of the PCI card, but I don't have the same thing for the video card. After getting the virtual address of the surface, I passed it to the driver. The driver used MmGetPhysicalAddress() to convert the virtual address to physical address and passed it back to the application program. In addition, it also manipulated the surface buffer with IoAllocateMdl() and MmProbeAndLockpage(). With physical address of the surface buffer, I trigged DMA transfer from video memory to our PCI card. Unfortunately, the data I got in the card was the meaningless all 0xFF. I'm wondering if Windows supports direct data transfer (DMA) from one device to another? If OK, what are the procedures to do this? Do I need the source code of the video card?     - PCI bus filter I would like to know if it's possible to emulate the HalGetBusData function with a WDM filter driver. The main goal is to be able to read the PCI configuration space of PCI devices that are not seen by my driver (for example, a 3rd party PCI-PCI bridge, HOST bridge...) for diagnostic purposes or setting special modes of the device. So the goal is to have a single driver that will trap all the PCI device and with an IOControl, this driver will do the read/write using IRP_MN_(READ/WRITE)_CONFIG.     - Windbg shows only ntoskrnl.exe I am trying to diagnose a hang condition using WinDbg. The hang occurs after the system is booted and sitting at the logon screen. I have WinDbg running on another computer, connected through a serial port. When the target boots, WinDbg shows it successfully communicating with the target, and says debuggee is running. However, when I break into the target, the only process shown is ntoskrnl.exe: + 000:f0f0f0f0 ntoskrnl.exe | +-- 000:1 Surely there are more processes running.     - Code Alignment Problem We have an odd problem with one of our device drivers, and it seems to be associated with the placement and size of the code, but we cannot determine the exact cause or the correct resolution. First, I need to be clear that this is an older set of code, and it is being compiled with the VS 6 C++ compiler. The driver environment was hacked to permit the use of C++ code in the kernel, and so the environment is even more strange. There is one aspect of the driver that attempts to access the contents of a mountable file system during the boot process. Normally this works fine, as the attempt to open a file in that file system causes an auto-mount, and the file is accessed. We did notice that in debug mode the code was failing, and it turned out that the call to open the file was returning a "device not ready" error, which normally indicates that the file system could not be mounted. As we started to debug the cause of the problem, by adding extra debug information, the problem 'disappeared'! After several hours of experimenting with the code, we found that if we added or removed some code, we could cause the problem to occur or disappear! The actual code being added or removed does not seem to matter, as it is typically debug statements anyway, and in no way affects the algorithm. Does anyone have any suggestions on how we could go about isolating the cause for this problem and avoiding it in the future -- aside from rewriting the driver in the standard and latest DDK environment? -Ken Tag: Passthru Installation Popups Tag: 58757

number of popups vary from machine to machine also.

On what does the number of popups depend ?

Number of popups depends on the number of adapters that
your passthru driver binds to. Your driver has one
virtual adapter for each adapter on the system (including
some other virtual adapters like NDIS WAN). To get rid
of them on your development system ... System
Properties\Driver Signing\ choose Ignore option.
