    - UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices does not call AddDevice in Windows 2000 Using the UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices appears to work fine for the installation of an initial multifunction device in Windows 2000. However, when used to install subsequent devices, there is no call made to may AddDevice function. As a result, when my DIF_NEWDEVICEWIZARD_FINISHINSTALL function attempts to pass it's information to my driver, there is not extension into which the driver can store it. This is failure to call my AddDevice function for subsequent devices is true regardless of whether I use the INSTALLFLAG_FORCE or not.     - USB power management problem? Hello, all! While testing recently developed USB measurement device I found a problem with power management that I still can't resolve. Device is single-interface single BULK endpoint device. Device driver is DDK's BULKUSB sample with a couple of IOCTLs added. When the device is plugged into Vitek 2-port USB hub, Windows 2000 crashes (3 machines) with STOP 0x0000001e - KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED or reboots unexpectedly (old PIII machine), after installation of device driver. With SoftICE installed, a page fault is reported in the driver, with a very strange stack trace, even before the DriverEntry is called. When the device was plugged in the Windows 98 system (by accident), a dialog appeared, saying that USB cannot provide enough power to power the device. Our device reports a maximum consumption of 180 mA, in it's configuration descriptor. Then we've changed this report to 100 mA and the all began to work. Can this be a feature of Windows 2000 power management in that BULKUSB sample does not process gracefully? Thanks in advance, Alexei N.     - USB device driver installation problem Hello all! I'm expierencing the following device/driver installation problem. We developed a specialized measurement USB device and a BULKUSB-based driver for it. With the most of our test systems installation of device and its driver is not a problem. But with one machine running Windows 2000 Professional + SP4 it turned to hell. When I plug in the device it is detected ('BioSensor USB device', as it's USB string descriptor for device says). Then Device Manager asks for the INF file and I point to the file. And after a second it says that this file contains no information on compatible devices. Setup log (setupapi.log) in the highes verbose level showed nothing useful. The log goes like: .... file bm_usb22.inf opened... .... searching for compatible device ID: usb\vid_71E4&pid_0005&rev_0001, usb\vid_71E4&pid_0005 .... no compatible device ID found (error 0xE0000228) I used NTDDK's usbview to find out if PID, VID and RID were read OK, and it seems they were. (I could also see it from setupapi.log.) Using the REGEDIT I found that device manager creates a node in the registry under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\USB\ with correct VID and PID. This happens on a machine running Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4. Problem could not be reproduced on another machine with the same software configuration (i.e. Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4). FYI: KB822831 did not help. Your suggestions?     - Anyone know how to access the Link between Page File & Physical Memory? I went through debuging a call to malloc() to try to find out where the link between virtual memory and physical memory is stored, but ended up with calls to HeapAlloc() that are stepped over by the debugger. What I need to do is, given a buffer such as int myBuffer = (int*)malloc(whateverSize * sizeof(int)); I want to lock the pages in physical memory and then map those pages to another virtual address.     - USB devices need drivers (again) when you change port?!? If I connect an USB device to an USB port the "Found new hardware wizard" pops up. Installation works and all is fine. However, if I disconnect the device and reconnect to ANOTHER port on the PC the wizard pops up again! The drivers are already there so why the ---- does it need to install the drivers again? After some fiddling in the registry (HKLM) it seems that the driver database is implemented in such a way that each peripheral is identified by its connected port... duh! Does anyone know of a work around? I would really like to install the drivers ONCE and dont care much about which USB port the user chooses to plug into.     - DeviceIOControl XP Hi, I am using DeviceIOControl() API to get connection information of any USB devices connected for my application. I am calling DeviceIOControl() in a timer every 2 seconds. My problem is that when I plug-out and plug-in my device when my application is running, the UHCI port crashes and fails to identify any devices connected to this port. How I need to define CmdSendBlockData (and other parameters), when the following data structure exists for the printer (Bit Image): The CmdSendBlockData is "<ESC><2A><m><n1><n2><d>" m = Print mode 24-dot double density n1, n2 = defines the width in dots d = databytes, bit image data The data need to have the following format (Height: 24 dots = 3 bytes): d1 d4 d7 d2 d5 d8 d3 d6 d9 These are 9 data bytes, which defines a 24x24 dot image.     - IoAllocateErrorLogEntry fails. Dear All, I am using IoAllocateErrorLogEntry and IoWriteErrorLogEntry to log the events. Does the system free the memory allocated for ErrorLogEntry structure using above function on its own? Or is there any explicit way of freeing this memory once IoWriteErrorLogEntry is done. Is there any restriction on the number of events that can be logged for each driver? Hi, I want to automatically generate mapfile and symbol file when building driver, but there are some texts(such as "131 bytes saved through ICF") at the last line of mapfile after building, so mapsym always failed with "Bad hex digit (0x79)" message.     - usb2.0 suspend/resume issues I am working with a usb2.0 composite device under winxp which has three interfaces printer,scanner and mass storage device. I have my own host2.0 stack and my composite driver takes care of the device. micrososft client drivers are loaded for the different functions(usbstor.sys,usbprint.sys and usbscan.sys). I have two problems during suspend/resume. 1. before initiating suspend, i access the mass storage device and leave the explorer associated with it open. after wake up i am able to still access the mass storage device, but i am not not able to access my printer. pls note that this problem does not happen when i close all the documents or the explorer from the mass storage device. 2. when i try to disconnect the device, my parent composite driver deletes all pdo and gets unloaded, when i connect the composite device again, windows says that " the previous instance of the mass storage driver is still in memory and so culdnt load the mass storage driver", in this case mass storage driver is never loaded unless i reboot the system. i strongly feel that the leaving the handles open from the mass stroage device has got some impact, becos i never encounter such problems when all the handles associated with the mass storage device is closed. any suggestion is appreciated, thanks Tag: OID_GEN_MINIPORT_INFO?? I develop a driver that in which I use "IoRegisterPlugPlayNotification" to listen to another device's arrive/remove. And in the callback function, I use "IoGetDeviceObjectPointer" to get the DeviceObject of that device. And then, I can use "IoCallDriver" to send IRP to it. But I face a problem. If I use "IoBuildSynchronousFsdRequest" to build IRP_MJ_PNP and send to that device, it works well. But if I use "IoBuildSynchronousFsdRequest" to build IRP_MJ_READ or "IoBuildSynchronousFsdRequest" to build IRP_MJ_WRITE. It will let the computer to show a black screen.     - Odd problem with mirror driver changing display I have implemented a mirror driver based on the DDK sample, and it works except that when it is enabled rubberbanding shows differently on the real display on XP, e.g. if I click and drag in an empty area in Windows Explorer, with the driver disabled, I get a black outline filled with a transparent blue gray shade, but with the driver enabled, I get a dotted black outline with no shading.     - Win DDK 3790 cannot compile with VS 6.0, but linking error with VS. Hi, I had a simple driver compiled and working under Visual Studio 6.0 and Windows 2000 DDK on a Win@K system. I wanted to try to get it compile on my WinXP professional system. I got Windows Server 2003 DDK installed, from the documentation, it seems to suppose to work with WinXP and 2000. When I tried to compile the project, I got the following error: G:\WINDDK\3790\INC\DDK\WNET\NTDDK.h(23) : fatal error C1189: #error : Compiler version not supported by Windows DDK It failed on this statement. #if _MSC_VER < 1300 From Walter Oney's book, I was suppose to use Win.NET DDK and VS 6.0. I only saw this server DDK, WinXP, Win2000 DDK. Which DDK was I suppose to use? Does this version of DDK not suppose work with VS 6.0? I tried to compile the same project under VS.NET 2003, it did not give a compiler version problem but I got a linker error: something.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol ___CxxFrameHandler referenced in function __ehhandler$?somefunc@@YGHPAUSomestuct@@@Z Release\somedriver.SYS : fatal error LNK1120: 1 unresolved externals I am not sure what caused this linker error.     - Wnidows 2000 and PCI-Cardbus bridge resources I have seen some articles here and in alt.periphs.pcmcia about the 2MB limitation of Windows 2000 default resources allocated to devices beyond PCI bridges. I have a similar problem to those people because I am trying to write a device driver for a Cardbus card that needs a memory window of 8MB due to the embedded aplication constraints where the card is also used. I am a device driver newbie and I have been reading a lot lately. The Microsoft paper PCIBridge-CardBus.doc that describes this constrains talks about "Windows 2000 DEFAULT Resources" so I assume that these 'default' resources can be changed to a different setting. Does anybody knows how to change these settings? My knowledge about writing .INF files is still pretty marginal and I do not know if I should use the LogConfigOverride in the .INF file of my device driver or if I should change something in pcmcia.inf or even machine.inf.     - mirror driver display quirks? I've got a mirror driver which seems to be experiencing some difficulties with DVDs. Although it plays on my XP machine through a USB 2.0 dvd player, on a clone machine with the dvd player built right in, DirectX cant seem to find the IVideoWindow Interface. I'm not trying to see get updates of the DVD screen, but while the driver is loaded, it seems that DVDs cant even play (at least on some computers). This is all with WinMedia Player and any DirectX apps. PowerDVD I suspect doesnt go through DirectX, as it always seems to work.     - Compilation problem with WinDDK 2600.1106 vs. 2600 I have one system with the WinDDK 2600 which compiles my printer driver projects (specifically a Language Monitor) fine and another system were I have the WinDDK 2600.1106 installed and I found that here the Language Monitor is acting funny when I compile the same code here. Basically the spooler gets stuck in the first bytes and doesn't continue printing. Has anyone seen this before? What is the difference between 2600 and 2600.1106?     - Synchronization in Dpc. Hi All, I am using KeInsertQueueDpc for inserting Dpc requests from a system interrupt handler to perform my operation. In the Dpc routine I am playing with some global variables and hence need synchrinization, but cannot use SpinLock as another interrupt execution will cause SPIN_LOCK_ALREADY_OWNED bugcheck. Also I cannot use any other dispatch objects as I am running on DISPATCH_LEVEL. The warnings are because of a known issue with NDISTest 4.03.0030 on Windows
2000. It has been fixed in the NDISTest beta version 4.03.0044.
