    - SMBus and I2C in USER mode Hi all, I need to access I2C bus (a portion of SBBus) from my USER (ring 3) app, I noticed pci.sys implemented the functionality 'Intel 82801FB/FBM SBBus Controller' but I do not know its device interface and its IOCTL.     - New to BDA driver I am new to writing BDA driver. But there is something I am confused. From DDK docs, As I know, at driverentry point, Calling KsInitializeDriver function will initialize the the driver object of an AVStream minidriver. Then AVStream will call AVStrMiniDeviceAdd(AddDevice routine). At this point, WDM device object is created and KSDEVICE structure is initialed. There is a sensence showed in DDK Doc: Minidrivers can use this routine to associate context information with the AVStream device object, or to initialize a device extension. Question 1: What is context information? Does this mean device extension? If it does, what does device extension belong to? Minidriver? or User-created device extension? Question 2: Can I store User-created device extension in context information? or store into KSDEVICE.FunctionalDeviceObject.DeviceExtension? I try to look up the KSDevice structure. I am confused something,too. Question 3: Does FunctionalDeviceObject of KSDevice belong to this minidriver? If I want to add USB support into BDA, Should I aquire FunctionalDeviceObject for USB? or leave it alone, put USB support in the PDO? or there is another method? Hi all, I connected my webcam to USB 2.0 port, when live preview, I checked the device manager, it says the USB bandwidth used is 398%! when connect to USB1.1 port, the value is 60%, I think 60% is reasonable.     - Bimap character size Hi, I am working on Text rendering in printer driver. I have to download the given text as bitmap, so after downloading the font header information, i am trying to download the character header information, the character header contains 'Left offset', 'Top offset', 'Bitmap width' and 'Bitmap height'. I have obtained the width and height from sizlBitmap member of GLYPHBITS structure, but these vealues are not matching with the required result, like For character 'b' of Arial-12, the Required width=45 i am getting 896 and Requred height=73 i m getting 96 And i am not getting how to find out the left and top offsets.     - Virtual COM Driver Occurs Surprise Removal Event When CPU Loading is High Dear all, I write a Virtual COM Driver, it can transfers data from COM port to USB port. It's lower driver is USB driver (USBHID.sys) developed by Microsoft. But when CPU Load increase to 100%, a "Surprise Removal" event happens.     - Tutorial for understanding / using the Setup API available for non-C++ wizards? Hi all, Does anybody know if there is a tutorial or documentation that explains the usage of the Setup API for those w/o much unmanaged code experience. I've been working on test automation where we check whether a device can be disabled and then re-enabled. This is a manual test currently which we're striving to move to our automation. I thought that I had this figured out but each perceived step forward in the right direction presents yet another logic error. Currently, we're trying to implement this in C# using PInvoke. I don't have a world of experience/skill w/ C++ nor using PInvoke so this has been quite a challenge. I've been looking at the devcon example included in the Windows 2003 SP1 DDK along w/ various usage examples/soure code online but am still tripping in various places :(.     - Query on USB bus driver Hi all, Currently iam working in faking a usb bus driver. I am catching all the query asked from the class driver which is on the top layer of my bus driver. The problem what i am facing now is in setting the configuration for the class driver? The class driver inorder to set a configuration creating a URB by passing the corresponding configuration descriptor to the bus driver which it wants to set.     - question for the pro's I install my NDIS IM driver on a laptop that has an intel wireless adapter and pretty soon it starts blue screening. When I check the crash dump there is nothing in it about my driver ... the crash is happening inside the NIC driver (s24trans.sys) How on earth do I debug this? Even though it is not my driver that crashes, my driver must be partially responsible, because the other driver only begins to crash when mine is installed. I've thought about the idea of installing a checked build of xp on the crashing system and then hopefully the crash dumps might contain more information ... but ultimately I'll still be staring at a bunch of assembler written by MS or Intel!     - ACPI intercepting power button (and lid switch) questions (XP) Hi, I want to intercept ACPI power button (and perhaps also the lid switch on a notebook) in order to gain more control on what to do depending on application status. Unfortunately the WM_QUERYENDSESSION method is not sufficient to me because a couple of applications (e.g visual studio) terminate themselves even if my app returns that it does not want windows to shutdown/whatever. How is the button press communicated from kernel to user space? (same for lid switch) What windows process is the first consumer of these events? Which windows process is displaying the dialog for standby, power down, restart if the power button is configured for "Ask what to do" ? (winlogon, crss, ... ) While poking around I installed a custom gina dll (using the original msgina.dll but created a GinaDLL registry entry). As soon as this GinaDLL entry was present, the system displayed the old fashioned dialog instead of the new colorful XP shutdown dialog. With help of a small program I discovered that the dialog window which has focus (after a power button press) seems to belong to the windows explorer process . Interestingly when I kill the explorer the same dialog is being displayed nevertheless, so there seems to be more than one process which can display the power down dialog.     - USB Hub driver Hi, I have encountered a strange problem. And I have a few doubts regarding this. Here it goes... I have a 4 port Belkin hub connected to my system . To one of the port, I have my Smartcard Reader connected and to another port I have connected a Serial to USB converter. Now I open the serial port from the hyper Terminal. Now if I unplug the USB Hub, USB Hub sends IRP_MN_SURPRISE_REMOVE to my Smartcard Reader, which my reader completes and returns STATUS_SUCCESS. However my reader doesn't recieve the IRP_MN_REMOVE notification and hence my device doesnt gets unloaded. However the entries are removed from the Device Manager. Now if I diconnect the COM port, my reader driver gets the IRP_MN_REMOVE and gets unloaded. In short, my reader driver does not get unloaded as long as the COM port is open. Now my assumption is that when the PNP manager sends IRP_MN_SURPRISE REMOVAL to both my reader driver and the Serial port driver , both should complete it with Status Success, and subsequently both should receive an IRP_MN_REMOVE , thus unloading the drivers.     - install root-enumerated device driver via .MSI file? I'm using MAKEMSI to build a .MSI file that intalls my various device drivers. So far I have been able to create a .MM file that appends a location to the DevicePath registry key when the .MSI runs so that Windows knows where to search for the .INF/.SYS files for my PnP drivers. However, I would also like to install a root-enumerated bus driver (basically a modified toaster bus) at the time when the .MSI runs. How do I do this? Can I do this via some VBSCRIPT inside the .MM file? It seems that DIFxAPP does not support root-enumerated drivers and that DEVCON is not redistributable, so I guess these will not help me.     - Windows CE USB development First let me explain about the project a bit. There is a Hardware that contains a Real Time OS that suports USB (host). My job is to develop a program do get the data from (via USB) the hardware and plot a math graph of it in the PDA Pocket PC . For now, I decided to use C# . The visual Studial has a nice GUI for mobile programing. My problems: 1) Is there a USB conector to the pocket pc ? a kind compact flash that conects to the palm and suport USB ? The cradle always start the MS activeSync. 2) The pocket needs to find the USB host (hardware). Is there any programs out there for windows CE for USB develpment? any C# codes o? I am trying to set my PC to wake up by frames which contains patterns defined by me, in properties of my network card I am seeing that such capability (wake-up frame) is supported and enabled.     - _EPROCESS::ProcessExiting and PsGetProcessExitProcessCalled(). As posted before, Iâ??ve been having some problems with preparing to go into another process just as it is shutting down. I finally managed to avoid this simply by using: if ( pParms->peProc->ProcessExiting ) { return NtStatus; } So if the process is closing, I just return. However, the _EPROCESS structure changes unpredictably with service packs and versions of Windows, so I changed this code to: if ( PsGetProcessExitProcessCalled( pParms->peProc ) ) { return NtStatus; } According to every site I can find, the actual code for PsGetProcessExitProcessCalled() is: NTSTATUS NTAPI PsGetProcessExitProcessCalled(PEPROCESS Process) { return Process->ProcessExiting; } So it should be doing the same thing, but will work correctly on each version of Windows that supports this function. However it does not! My function ended up always returning at that line, even though the process was not closing. I put a debug print and printed both pParms->peProc->ProcessExiting and PsGetProcessExitProcessCalled( pParms->peProc ) and I got this: pParms->peProc->ProcessExiting: 0x0 PsGetProcessExitProcessCalled( pParms->peProc ): 0x34200 Why are these different values? PsGetProcessExitProcessCalled() doesnâ??t know the correct offsets in its own structures? When I use pParms->peProc->ProcessExiting directly it works fine, and my function does not try to go into the target process while it is closing, avoiding the crashes I have been getting. So my header files are correctly defining _EPROCESS. But why are these 3rd-party hack-up header files more accurate than the real thing? is PsGetProcessExitProcessCalled() returning the whole DWORD where ProcessExiting is or what?     - Compiler bug in the DDK--be aware of it Hi guys, I ran into a compiler bug in the latest ddk that is very serious. I have a piece of code I want to execute exactly one time, but discovered it gets run every single time. It is written as follows: void func(void) { static LONG Init = 0; if (InterlockedOr(&Init, 1) == 0) { ...do one time stuff here... } } The problem is the inner code executes every single time the function is invoked. I traced it down to a bug in the compiler. I then recompiled the driver using the Visual Studio 2005 compiler and the problem was fixed. I have attached the code each generated below.     - Windows Spooler access in Windows XP not working with UNICODE set Hi, i have a c++ project with some managed and unmanaged win32 code in it to access the print spooler. I have set the character set to be UNICODE, but whenever i make a call to a spooler function such as OpenPrinter or EnumPrinters, the program silently crashes without error.     - The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) - KMDF Hi, I am using the OSRUSBFX2 sample in the KMDF. I compiled the 'step1' driver with Win2003 Server DDK and placed the coinstaller (WdfCoInstaller01001.dll) file in the same directory as .sys file. I changed the vid and pid to match my usb device. Now when I tried to load the driver in WinXp sp2 using the device manager it showed me the following error 'Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)' I tried the suggestions like uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it, rebooting the system, compiling the driver again.. but still I am getting the same error.     - Alertable wait I've seen the "Do Waiting Threads Receive Alerts and APCs?" chart in the DDK and searched a little to find out that it's usually better to set WaitMode to KernelMode to stop the stack from being paged. Now, if WaitMode is KernelMode, then what's the downside of being Alertable? Is having the wait aborted and the appropriate error reported back up a bad thing?     - IoGetDmaAdapter Problem Hi! I am trying to teach a WDM driver DMA capability for new features we are integrating into the card the driver is supposed to access. The problem is, that the IoGetDmaAdapter routine called from the startdevice routine fails. The bluescreen tells me via some plug and play manager note (error code 0xca) that the physical driver object I pass in is invalid. But I pass in the one I get passed into the startdevice routine. If I use the pdo-pextension->pdo, it also fails. I don't really know why, since I only copied the code from some example book I own. How can I do that? Every request to SetupDiEnumDeviceInterfaces fails because I need to pass it a class GUID but this is the piece of information I need to enumerate for. I tried to pass NULL or GUID_NULL w/out success. May you please help me?     - NdisInterlocked vs. ExInterlocked As Doron H. explained recently on the ExInterlocked... functions, they acquire the spinlock at the highest irql. This has two interesting effects: a. These functions are callable from DIRQL; b. A spinlock used for ExInterlocked... by an ISR should not be acquired by KeAcquireSpinlock, since the latter raises only to DISPATCH, so a ISR can be deadlocked by code running on same CPU but lower IRQL. The DDK docum says on ExInterlockedInsertHeadList etc.: "Do not mix atomic and non-atomic calls on the same list." By non-atomic it probably means acquiring the same spinlock by KeAcquireSpinlock. Now, in ndis.h (wdk 5384) NdisInterlockedInsertHeadList is #defined as ExInterlockedInsertHeadList - so everything above should apply. But the docum on NdisInterlockedInsertHeadList says that it "raises IRQL to DISPATCH_LEVEL" and says nothing about intermixing of NdisInterlocked... and NdisAcquireSpinlock. However, the NDIS docum also says that spinlocks can not be used to sync with DIRQL - so, observing developers won't cause deadlocks by calling NdisInterlocked... from ISR, though technically it is doable. On the flip side, does this mean that ExInterlocked DDIs *may* be mixed with acquiring same spinlock normally, IF all involved code paths run at <= DISPATCH? Consider the scenario when the list is mostly handled by Ex(Ndis)InterlockedInsertTailList and Ex(Ndis)InterlockedRemoveHeadList, but sometimes the lock is taken with Ke(Ndis)AcquireSpinlock for multiple opereations on the list. I know that the fastest way is to change date in a driver, but one of the requirements is to make it possible to change cryptographic algorithm in an easy way. I decided to change PassThru driver extended by Thomas F. Divine (part 2 of his article) and I pass interesting packets to my application and block them in the driver. Then I want to change the data there and resend packets as a new ones (from a driver's point of view). And here is my problem. When I create a new NDIS_PACKET and try to send it with NdisSend (or even NdisSendPackets, as in NDISPROT DDK example) I've got bluescreen.     - Process Validation I am using KeStackAttachProcess() to go to the context of my own and sometimes another processâ??s RAM. In the case of the other process, it can happen that the process closes while I am about to read from it, causing my program to lock up, and it canâ??t even be End-Taskâ??ed. I start with a valid EPROCESS structure for the target process, but between passing it through DeviceIoControl() to KeStackAttachProcess(), the process closes and the structure is no longer valid, causing the infinite failure. It is my understanding that once inside KeStackAttachProcess(), the process can not close (fully) until I leave it, so the EPROCESS must remain valid for that time. Therefore, my problem exists just before entering KeStackAttachProcess(). How can I avoid this problem? How can I lock a process so that it can not close just before I go into it with KeStackAttachProcess()? It would also help if I can detect the closing of the application more quickly/accurately. Is the only way to do this by setting a hook on ZwTerminateProcess()? And is so, how can I translate the process handle to its process ID (since it only has PROCESS_TERMINATE access rights)?     - How to Access hardware buffers thru DShow Interfaces / other Apis? Hi, I am a newbie to DirectShow. Recently I am developing an Image Acquisition software for a microscope. I use IAMVideoProAmp to Get/Set the properties to control the video display. I get the properties and save them in an ini file. I found a question: 1. I set the ColorEnable property to be the Auto mode to obtain a correct color display; 2. then I switch the ColorEnable Item to be the Manual mode(after this,the video display does not change the color); 3. now I save all the properties that I can get from IAMVideoProAmp. 4. However, when I restart my program to read the ini file to set the saved properties to the camera, the color display is not the original one. The same procedures are taken by using vidcap32 except that the properties can not be saved. Namely, 1. open the video source dialog to set the ColorEnable item to be the auto mode to obtain a correct color display; 2. then switch it to manual mode (after this,the video display does not change the color); 3. close the vidcap32. 4. If I restart the vidcap32, the color display remains the same as it was before I close the vidcap32. If the USB camera is connected to the PC or the PC is not turned off, no matter how many times I restart the vidcap32 or my program, the display will not be changed(the ColorEnable property is manual mode); however, if the camera is pluged off or the PC is restarted, the display color will be shifted. I have checked the Registry but I did not find any solution. Therefore, I guess that some properties that compensate the color display are buffered in the hardware rather than stored in the Registry to control the display. How to get those parameters or access the related hardware buffers thru directshow interfaces? Because I found a third software that is not specially designed for my camera can store the parameters to obtain the correct color display. I am curious about how it achieves this.     - Creating a KMDF NDIS <==> USB driver I am about to develop (using the KMDF) an NDIS miniport driver which will be communicating with a USB device which will send and receive Ethernet frames over bulk endpoints. I am basing the approach on the NDISEDGE sample in the KMDF distribution. There is a small blurb at the end of the HTML handout given with the driver that addresses how one might adapt the driver for use with a USB device. However, it is a little light on details (at least for someone of my experience level) and seems to have not been updated for the KMDF (for example, it references "BULKUSB" and not "OSRFXUSB" as a source of info on how to talk USB). I've been studying past posts on this group as well as the KMDF help topics, MSDN library, etc. I have a few general questions about this approach: 1) In the KMDF help page for WdfDeviceMiniportCreate, there is (what seems to be) a fairly extensive set of restrictions on what WDF APIs may not be called from within the context of a miniport driver. This includes WdfIoQueueCreate(), which is used extensively in the OSRFXUSB sample and seems to greatly simplify handling of reads and writes. What implications do these restrictions have for the portion of my driver that talks to USBD? Will I have to manage the reading and writing of packets "manually", that is, in a more verbose manner than is seen in the OSRFX sample? 2) The driver will need to have a "management" interface that can be accessed from user mode, i.e. DeviceIoControl(). I saw some (albeit dated) lengthy posts / flames (especially one guy going off for several pages..) about how it's not possible to hook into most kernel APIs from NDIS, so this precluded using IOCTLs or doing such things as preventing the unsafe removal box when IRP_MN_SURPRISE_REMOVAL comes along. Then I saw at http://www.ndis.com/faq/QA10290101.htm about how to create a "management" interface to the miniport with NdisMRegisterDevice(). This seems to be just what I need. Can someone confirm this will work for talking to the driver directly? Also, if I were to look for this device with SetupDiEnumDeviceInterfaces(), which GUID would I use? I don't see a GUID argument to that call. 3) This may not make any sense, but how much more difficult would it be to separate the USB and NDIS functions of the driver into two separate .sys drivers, with the NDIS driver communicating to the USB as a lower filter?
