    - What is the Proper Newsgroup to ask Driver Installation Questions? I noticed that while kernel programming questions are (almost) always answered, driver installation related questions are seldom answered (and when they are, the answers are usually wrong or misleading).     - WinXP USB BULK mode High speed We have a scenario as follows using BULK mode: - High speed USB device that provides MPEG2 TS. Device has 2K FIFO. - Stream rate is approx. 32 Mbit/s, so we see an IN token in about 7000 out of the 8000 microframes per second. - Our USB client driver is queuing up 8 requests, then requeueing 1 on Bulk complete, to make sure there is always a request ready for Host Controller. - The driver is requesting 564 bytes( 3 * 188) at a time. Problem: - Some microframes come back to back from Host controller without an IN token and we lose MPEG2 data from the device, since the device overflows its FIFO.     - Save all the dump files Hi, We are getting a series of system crash sometimes and I donâ??t want to lose any crash dump since it represents a bug. So we set dump â??overwriteâ?? flag to 0 in registry to save the first dump. When the system comes up, with the help of a small application (starting automatically), rename the .dmp file with a timestamp. This is working fine and saving all the subsequent dump files (max of 7 dumps by considering the memory). But sometimes the driver is getting crashed while loading and that is before savedump.exe completes itâ??s copying from pagefile to dump file. So the previous crash dump is lost. Please let me know any graceful way of delay the driver loading if the savedump process is running or any other idea in this scenario to save all dump files?     - PCIe 64b addressing under Vista. Hi list, I'm porting a driver to support PCI express devices. Under 32 bits OSes (i.e. WinXP and Vista 32b) its work fine. Its work fine too under Vista Ultimate 64bits, but every transaction are still using a 32 bits addressing mode. The driver is compiled via "build" utility under "Windows Vista and Windows server Longhorn x64 Checked build environment", and I checked that DMA tranferts are 64b enabled : I set to "true" the field Dma64BitAddresses of the DEVICE_DESCRIPTION structure. (BTW could someone explain me the meanning of Dma32BitAddresses and Dma64BitAddresses fields ?) >From the device side, 64b addresing mode is activated in BAR register, and device manufacturer certified me, the device is 64 bits ready. My machine is a standard Dell precision 380 with 1Gb RAM. Does Vista need more than 4Gb RAM to activate 64b addressing ? Any ideas, or hints ?     - Signability Warning: Missing HWID I am trying for the first time to generate a Catalog (.cat) file for a driver package based on the MSVAD sample. I am using Signability v2.19 for that (on Windows XP). The test is passed (with some warnings) and the Catalog file is successfully generated. However, I am puzzled by the following warning: 22.9.3 WARN: Windows XP: Missing HWID (cannot have just compatid) in line "%msvad.devicedesc%=msvad,,*msvad_ in section [msvaddevicesection] of \msvad.inf Now... I know that the HIWD is missing. But that's what Microsoft placed there - probably for a purpose. So my questions are: 1. Do I really have to have an HWID (aka DeviceId in Oney's book) in the device description statement in the .inf file for the cat file to be signed? 2. Will the driver load/work if I put there an HWID?     - Windows CE 5.0 Stream Interface Driver I have written/modified a CE driver to access a quad serial Uart (specifically an Exar 16C8541). What appears to be working is the ability to transmit and receive with the driver on a given serial or COM port when an application requests to do so. What does not appear to be working is the ability to open more than one serial or COM port at a time. Example: If COM1 is open COM2 fails to open. If COM1 is closed then COM2 will open. Any clues as to what I may be doing wrong? Attached is debug output for CE initialization of the driver (in this case only COM1 and COM2). I have placed debug info for all functions in the driver yet when I try to open the second COM2 port simultaneously with COM1 I see no driver activity whatsoever. Additional Info: There is only one physical interrupt for all the Exar COM ports. The kernel is sending debug data through one of three serial ports built into the processor (Cirrus EP9315) - Platform builder has the driver removed for the remaining 2 built in Cirrus serial ports so they do not conflict with the COM naming convention used for the Exar part (Only the Exar seral driver is in effect in the registry). Any information as to why only one port opens would be greatly appreciated.     - DPInst and virtual drivers (e.g. MSVAD) I am trying to understand from reading the DPInst WDK documentation to which category a virtual device driver would fall: a "device that is configured in the system" or a "nonpresent device"? The documentation reads: "DPInst checks whether the hardware identifiers or compatible identifiers in the INF file match a device that is configured in the system or match a nonpresent device." Since in a virtual device driver there is no hardware involved (i.e. no "device that is configured in the system"?), it is tempting to think that DPInst would be dealing with a "nonpresent device", right? But when I install a virtual device driver (e.g. MSVAD) manually, using Control Panel's Add Hardware, I am first prompted by a question "Have you already connected this hardware to your computuer?" - to which I must answer "Yes, I have already connected the hardware" or else the driver will not be installed...     - Strategies for High-bandwidth Isochronous USB with AVstream minidriver Hi All, I'm trying to implement a video capture pin that uses the Process dispatch to queue frame buffers. It then uses a separate thread to take a frame from the queue and initiate a frame read into it. The read completion routine does a KsPinAttemptProcessing call to keep the leading edge buffers coming. The frame buffer queue is 5 deep. The pin runs for about 20 frames before the calls to Process start to fall behind and there are errors on some of the iso packets. When it reaches this "stable" state, Process is called at approx 17ms intervals. The iso read is for 14x24K for a full frame so it should occur at 14ms intervals. Should this approach work?     - IOCTL_DISK_GET_PARTITION_INFO_EX on Dynamic MBR data Hi, At present time our customers are widely using the GUID Partition Table (GPT). GPT provides a more flexible mechanism for partitioning disks than the older Master Boot Record (MBR) partitioning scheme that has been common to PCs. The problem is that the our client fails calling the DeviceIoControl() function with the ioctl IOCTL_DISK_GET_PARTITION_INFO for a GPT partition. It is obvious that the extended ioctl IOCTL_DISK_GET_PARTITION_INFO_EX should be used here. According to MSDN (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365180.aspx) the IOCTL_DISK_GET_PARTITION_INFO_EX control code is supported on basic disks. It is only supported on dynamic disksthat are boot or system disks, or have retained entries in the partition table. The DiskPart.exe command RETAIN can be used to do this for other dynamic simple partitions.The disk support can be summarized as follows.     - Driver to Extract Text and Positional Info, Create PDF, and Forward to another Printer I have a project running that requires me to extract the text data and its position information from a print job as well as create a standard file (probably a pdf) and then forward the job to another printer ( for printing on paper ). I have never worked with Printers before and was wondering if you could recommend a good resource or three for me. I am hoping to use a Universal Printer Driver from Microsoft and attach to the appropriate events so that I can snag a copy of the print image (in what format? i don't know), forward the job immediately to another printer, and then do my analysis on the image.     - STATUS_INVALID_DEVICE_REQUEST with IoGetDeviceObjectPointer Hello, - I have two drivers, with one I create a device with IoCreateDevice and I can see my device created in devicetree and in WinObj applications. - With the other driver I used IoGetDeviceObjectPointer to handle the device object pointer from the first driver. When I call IoGetDeviceObjectPointer I have an error. It returning STATUS_INVALID_DEVICE_REQUEST all the time. I check and re-check with devicetree, my device exist. But with WinObj I can see my device but when I double-click on it I have an error, I can't access to the properties. Maybe it is a right access problem. Do you have an idea to resolve this problem ?     - Driver development team It seems, to me, driver development is different from application development at a large scale. I wonder how hard it is to develop a team in a relatively small development house - let alone an efficient team. It is not possible to get a lot of driver development job - so few programmers are interested to be specialized at this area. And as you do not get driver developer easily you can not manage project easily - and loss interest for future driver projects.     - Can't install kbfiltr.sys Hi, I'm not sure this happened ever before. At least I didn't found anything: I can't install kbfiltr.sys with the standard kbfiltr.inf! Yes! The DDK kbfiltr! I modified the kbfiltr driver a little, but did nothing to the .inf file, If I install it over the device manager, for the ps/2 keyboard, it tells me it can't copy any files which are already there. That seem to be the files from keyboard.inf which are included in kbfiltr.inf: kbdclass.sys and i8042.sys. Of course they are already there. And if deleted they get immediately restored by the Windows File Protection. And I think I _need_ keyboard.inf. Since it's a keyboard filter driver. And the include instruction was _always_ in the .inf file. How comes this strange error? I mean: on another PC it worked! Also with Windows File Protection on. The installation worked and I got all the right registry entries. And since it's a pnp-device-filter there are much more entries than just the things under "\Services". You don't want to make them all by hand. Any ideas why this is happening? What's wrong with my Windows XP SP2 (all patches included)?     - NDIS IM, ethernet loopback i'm developing a NDIS IM that has to wrap ethernet packets into ethernet packets. due to its very specific application, the wrapper's destination has to be set to broadcast. yes, the wrapper also preserves the original SRC and DST MAC addresses, exactly as i got them from the upper layer. obviously, ALL of the packets i send, i get at the receive codepath. consequently, i have to mime the NDIS' loopback handling, and drop (by not indicating upper) the exact samt packets that NDIS wouldn't loop back if my driver wouldn't have been installed.     - NDIS IM Layering According to the WDK documentation, you cannot have more than one NDIS IM driver of a particular FilterClass (scheduler, loadbalance, failover) in a stack. This is found under the topic "Filter Intermediate Driver Installation (NDIS 5.1)". In practice, I was able to install the WDK sample PassThru and our own driver which is based on PassThru with no observable problems. Both drivers have their FilterClass specified as failover in their respective INF files. Am I misunderstanding something here? Is the documentation making a recommendation instead of stating policy?     - Enabling 1-N Mux (NDIS 5.1) in Network Connections (XP+SP2) window The Mux that we're working on shows up in the Network Connections window w/ a Disabled status. When the user attempts to Enable it using the context popup or any other method, a "Connection Failed" error is reported. The Mux is not, in fact, disabled. I am able to load the driver ... the DeviceAdd function is called for this device (function 1 - function interface code is 0) on the sdio card. DeviceAdd returns status_success ... however the PrepareHardware function in never called and the driver is unloaded. Questions : 1. What could prevent PrepareHardware from being called ? Is it because the function interface code is 0 ? 2. Is there any debug support in the sdbus host/link libaries to help figure this out. ? Since the device is stil under development it could very well be that something in the CIA is not set up correctly. Any help/pointers would be appreciated.     - Waiting in KMDF A few more questions 1. If I want to put a thread to sleep in KMDF, what mechanisms can I use? E.g., lets say EvtIoRead callback is called, yet the hardware resources to process that are not available yet. I want EvtIoRead to go to sleep until its woken up by the ISR. In Linux kernel there are wait queues that a function can sleep on until woken up. Are there similar native constructs in KMDF, or if not, can I use WDM (if they are available) or WIN32 calls? Anything besides WaitLock? (WaitLock doesn't seem do just that, as it forces the code that acquires it to execute as a critical section, AFAIK) 2. Let say the immediate availability of hardware for a DMA depends on how many scatter-gather elements are in the request and the current state of hardware due to outstanding requests. I.e., if I follow the framework, I won't know how many scatter-gather elements are in the request until I am inside EvtProgramDma callback. If at that point the resources are not available, I would need to wait for their availability. So: a) EvtProgramDma runs at DISPATCH IRQL, which means that even WaitLock cannot be executed in blocking mode. If the hardware resources are not immediately available, what should the driver do at this point? Spinning for them seems like a huge waste of processor cycles. b) Alternatively, I could postpone DmaExecute until all the resources are available and spin on that in the Io callback at passive IRQL (see quesetion 1).     - RNDIS Composite Device Hi, we have build a composite device with a RNDIS interface and a CDC ACM interface. If RNDIS uses the usb interfaces 0 and 1 evrything works fine. If I use the USB interfaces 2/3 for RNDIS I get a blue screen in usb8023.sys. The blue screen appears after the configuration descriptor was requested from the MI driver. My question is - do I have to write any extra code or routines in the driver so that the DTM test controller can run the network card related tests ?     - Restricting access to USB devices based on session Hi, I have a server running on Windows Server 2003. I have a filter driver which filters IRP_MJ_CREATE requests. My intension is to block certain users from accessing the USB device(say, a thumb drive) based on session id. I have used SeQueryAuthenticationIdToken to get the session id in my dispatch function for IRP_MJ_CREATE in my filter driver. When I tried to access the device from the explorer (from different sessions), I expected a IRP_MJ_CREATE request so that I can block certain users. However, I observed that the session Id that I get is ALWAYS "0" in my filter driver. Is this correct? One more thing is that I didnt see a IRP_MJ_CREATE when I opened a explorer from a session to access the device. Is this how it works? How can I acheive what I want? I'm looking for source code of device driver for analog device AD9640
(and also AD9736, i possible). But it would great anyway, if I could
find some example of alghoritm, some hint, or simply to know someone who
has developed or is developing these drivers.
