    - IWDFIoRequest::UnmarkCancelable does not release callback object Hello, it appears as if calling IWDFIoRequest::UnmarkCancelable does not directly release the respective IRequestCallbackCancel object, which has been passed when calling method IWDFIoRequest::MarkCancelable. By debugging the driver I can see that the reference counter is increased on calling IWDFIoRequest::MarkCancelable but not decreased when calling IWDFIoRequest::UnmarkCancelable. This poses a problem, because under certain conditions I want to remove a set of objects within my driver. However, one object is not freed, because its reference counter is not zero. However, when I remove the driver, then the destructor of this object is called and in the callstack I can see that it is called by the framework. So I supposed that this is the release call for the IRequestCallbackCancel object. Why is this object not directly released on calling IWDFIoRequest::UnmarkCancelable()?     - Installing printer driver and port monitor on vista Hi What's the best way to install a printer driver and port monitor on vista? I've looked at the Driver Install Framework, but it doesn't seems to be able to install my "virtual device". I have also tried to create a custom install application with AddPrinterDriver, AddPrinter and AddMonitor. This works fine on XP, but when run from a msi-package these functions fails with access denied on vista. I tried to set level=requireAdministrator in the manifest, but it doesn't seem to be enugh.     - IWDFIoRequest::ForwardToIoQueue does not return immediately Hello, I am using different IoQueues for read, write, and IoControl requests in an UMDF driver. A request is first handled by an DefaultIoHandler and then forwarded to its respective queue using the method IWDFIoRequest::ForwardToIoQueue. I would expect, that this method returns immediately after it requeued the request, but instead the request is handled in the context of ForwardToIoQueue. Therefore, the call blocks until the request has been completed. This happens even when forwarding over multiple queues. Note, that these queues are configure with WdfIoQueueDispatchParallel or WdfIoQueueDispatchSequential. I suppose I could use manual queues from which I can retrieve requests in a thread separately created by my driver, to decouple the actual processing from the request. Is this the recommended way? Should regular functions be used for this (FltXXX) or is it possible with new WDF The filter should'nt do much else than report some info about create/read/write's for particular files to user mode, where it will be validated and reported back to the driver.     - USB RNDIS halt message Hi, I am working on a wireless product, I am working on the USB Device side and making it as RNDIS CDC compliance. I am testing the device with Windows XP host RNDIS driver. During the intialization , the device is getting following messages 1)host sends the REMOTE_NDIS_INTIALIZE_MSG message 2)Deveice responds with the REMOTE_NDIS_INTIALIZE_CMPLT 3)host sent the REMOTE_NDIS_QUERY_MSG with OID "OID_GEN_SUPPORTED_LIST" 4)Device responded with the supported OID list 5)Host sends the REMOTE_NDIS_QUERY_MSG with OID OID_GEN_MAXIMUM_FRAME_SIZE 6)Device responded with the supported maximum transfer size(1500) 7)Host is sending the REMOTE_NDIS_HALT_MSG message How could i know from the host side, why it is sending the halt message. I have tried with even less frame size (64 bytes) in the response of OID_GEN_MAXIMUM_FRAME_SIZE but still host is sending the HALT message.     - Driver Installation Framework: newbie question I am not a device driver expert by any stretch of imagination. I am just an application programmer trying to package some drivers that are required by our application that interacts with external hardware devices using InstallShield 2008's driver installation framework. I have a really dumb question. The DIF wizard asks me to point it to an .inf file (belonging to, say, a printer driver). Once done, it automatically finds all the relevant .dll and .sys files. After InstallShield packages everything into setup.exe, I run it on the target machine and the driver files do get installed correctly but my question is what exactly is the meaning of "installation"? I was kindof thinking the framework will automatically add an icon for the printer (in the Start->Settings->Printers section) and associate the .inf file with it. (*(PISCHO_ATTACH_BUFFER)outputBuffer shows the buffer's adress and it's the same adress as input buffer) Because I want to get some Information(pIsochDescriptor) in application, I tried to write in the outputBuffer with RtlCopyMemory((PISOCH_ATTACH_BUFFERS)outputBuffer, IsochAttachBuffers, OutputBufferLength); ( I tried also with *((PISOCH_ATTACH_BUFFERS)outputBuffer) = *IsochAttachBuffers; ) After that, I can see that the informations are written in the outputBuffer. But if I try to get the Information in user-mode (I mean after the calling DeviceIoControl function), it seems that the informations got lost (pIsochAttachBuffers->pIsochDescriptor is still zero.)     - connecting to a handheld device using platform builder Hi, I have a MIPSII device with a WinCE 5.0 image flashed made by using AMDDBAU1100MIPSII BSP. What I like to know is how do I connect to this device using platform builder. This device has two serial ports, couple of USB ones and a Network port. I gave an ip address and connected a back to back cable to my host pc which has platform builder hoping that it would send bootme packets to my pc containing platform builder. I couldnot see anything. FYI the ip addresses in the host and the device are under the same subnet. I want to debug my driver and application in the platform builder just like I would do with a cepc machine. Can any one suggest me regarding this.     - How to map a UMA frame buffer from kernel to user mode Hi, I post this question again since the last subject is not clear. I'm trying to implement a method to map a reserved virtual space (created by MmAllocateMappingAddress and MmMapLockedPagesWithReservedMapping) from kernel to user mode process. From the DDK description for VideoPortMapMemory, it seems we can do UMA (universal memory architecture) frame buffer mapping as suggested in the comments. The steps are: 1. Call InitializeObjectAttributes to get object attributes; 2. Call ZwOpenSection to get the handle of the section object; 3. Call ZwmapViewOfSection to get the virtual address of the view; My question is how to set up the relation between the reserved virtual space and the section view, that's to say, how to find a section object to represent the reserved virtual space?     - vista does not call DrvStartPage after DrvStartDoc on 3 new dell I have a user mode printer driver that works on windows 2000, xp, and vista. About 1000 working customers (15 windows 2000, 900+ windows xp, and about 30 vista machines). One customer installed it recently on new Dell desktop computer. When I turn on the embeded debug on customer's computer the vista OS calls DrvStartDoc and then instead of calling DrvStartPage the OS calls DrvDisableSurface, does not generate any output and it completes without error. three non working customers machines two identical machines Dell Optiplex 4677 with 32 vista business edition 2037k ram Intel processor. third customer machine has same problem with new dell computer optiplex 740 with amd 64x2 antholon dual core 4200 2.2ghz 2gb ram running 32 bit vista business my machine is satellite p105 (toshiba) vista ultimate 2gb mem Works on my laptop running vista and several other vista installations. Driver is based on C:\WinDDK\6000\src\print\msplot compiled with vista wdk released 12-5-6 using Windows XP x86 Checked Build Environment Things I have tried to fix problem: Driver signing has no effect. Installing vista option for LPD Print Service, and LPR Port Monitor on my vista. Any thoughts as to why these 3 different customer dell desktops have this behavior?     - getting handle to device This one should be a no-brainer, I just added a dispatch routine to my bus filter driver that is supposed to return status information back. I register the interface in the AddDevice routine. This appears to be working, as I can see each instance enumerated under my GUID in the currentcontrolset\Control\DeviceClasses. The problem is after modifying the toaster examples enum application to use my GUID, I the SetupDiEnumDeviceInterfaces call fails and the last error is ERROR_NO_MORE_ITEMS. I double checked that I am using my new GUID, and that the correct number of instances of my device is in the registry. What I would like to know is how can I tell if my driver is not registering the interface correctly, or am I not accessing the interface correctly? Windows leaks about 50-100 bytes anytime a driver gets loaded/unloaded, affecting both the device insertion case and manual load/unload of drivers via service control manager. The problem can easily be seen by using the ddk example and pooltag utility. - Using WDK, build <wdk>\src\general\ioctl\sys driver, and install it - run the awesome pooltag utility from OSR (http://www.osronline.com/article.cfm?article=98) Steps to reproduce: - launch pooltag utility.     - Virtual Desktops, like in *nix with Xserver Hello, I am sure you know about Virtual Desktops. UNIX had them for about 20 years. There are some implementations for Windows too, even a Microsoft one, but for some reason they all suck. The primary reason is that they provide only an emulation of the real stuff -- basically they minimize one set of applications in one desktop, one set in another and so on -- they aren't real Virtual Desktops. The best implementation so far seems to be Virtual Dimension, but it still sucks, mainly because there are application that make hacks in the GUI, ignoring any recommendation. The main issue, is that all this are emulations -- Windows doesn't have the capability for Virtual Desktops. That is why I have thought of implementing it via a driver! I am not sure what the best way is -- I need to make it hardware independent -- that is -- it should not matter what video card you use.     - d Drive full with system restores I am in need of urget help before my PC dies. I have a Presario 56500NX with partitioned drives. All of my programs and files are saved on C drive. C drive capacity is 144GB, free space is 124GB with 86% free space. Drive D is a totally different story! Capacity 5.14GB Free space is 982MB with only 18% free space. I researched it, and on both drives did "disk cleanups", "file compressions", uninstalled programs no longer used, defraged both drives, deleted all "system restores" with exception of current date. I copied my 1 system restore to disks. Can I now go in and delete all the files on D drive. HP support advised me to un-install my OS and reinstall. Will that work??? I need to port it to Windows Vista, but it can't work well. In this driver, I use DO_DIRECT_IO as I/O flags, use MmGetSystemAddressForMdl( Irp->MdlAddress) to get current Mdl Address, and use ZwReadFile to read data from Virtual Cdrom. I also use MmGetMdlByteCount(Irp->MdlAddress) to get the length of system assigned buffer for Mdl. On Win2k/Xp/2003, ZwReadFile can be executed normally. For the first 3 executed times for ZwReadFile, the length of Mdl buffer is 2k, from the 4th time of executed ZwReadFile, the length of Mdl buffer is 4k. But on Vista, ZwReadFile can be only executed 3 times, the length of Mdl buffer is also 2k for these 3 times. For the 4th executed times of ZwReadFile, the Mdl buffer is 32k, ZwReadFile is blocked and can't be executed anymore. Also the driver is blocked. Can anyone give me a hint for this issue? I found it strange that I cannot update my already-installed unsigned driver after I made changes to driver code and recompiled. I was able to install driver first time. But updating driver is the problem. It updates the driver only after I changed the inf file date and version. For my testing this is really cumbursome. Everytime I compile the driver after minor change, I cannot reinstall the driver. I have to change inf file also with some other version number. Is this necessary? Any workaround for my driver testing. I didnot have problem with windows XP wherein we can do "have disk" and overwrite the driver binary. I want to replace driver binary with new driver binary for testing. Other information about driver can remain same. Is there any simple way to do this?     - Bitmap printer driver on XP I try to adapt Bitmap sample (from DDK) to save in JPEG or other formats, all pages printed. I'ts works well when all pages have the same orientation (all pages in portrait, or all pages in landscape). But when I try to print mixed pages from Word or other software, I get only the last one. I have created a virtual bus driver ( Bus FDO). I can create the multiple virtual ports also (Port PDOs). Later I can add the same number of Port FDO s as my PDO s, to create COM interface to my applications. Now I have a Multiple virtual COM interface. But the exact requirement of my project is to create the ports only when instructed by an application above. I think I can delay the making of FDO (so that there is no COM interface). But since the PDO s are present(which were installed when bus driver was inserted.). It shows in the device manager as unknown device. I dont want this to happen. Is there any way I could dynamically install Port PDO s(not along with Bus driver), when i get signal from application. More specifically "CAN A BUS DRIVER, DYNAMICALLY ENUMERATE ITS PORTS (NOT DEVICES CONNECTED TO ITS PORTS)". or the only way I have is to insert another bus driver when i want another port. For posterity's sake (and for newsgroup archives), I'll report that this
