 - Launching A User Process From Printer UI Plugin I need to launch a process from the OEMUI plugin to process some data from my virtual printer driver. The problem is it always launches as the user SYSTEM. I was under the impression from previous posts that the UI always ran at the user level. I don't want the process running as SYSTEM for securtiy reasons. How can I get the process to run as the current user viewing the desktop? I've noticed that the spawned process does not always show up on the visible desktop when a "Switch User" is performed. I've tried launching from both the port monitor and the UI plugin but it always comes up as SYSTEM and not always in the visible desktop. The Adobe PDF virtual print driver and the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer both launch programs to process data and they both do it as the correct user so I know it can be done but I can't find the correct calls to make it work.  - EngTextOut has different output for Print To File Hello, I've found an odd situation and I can't figure out where to look. I have a monolithic usermode print driver. It typically punts TextOut calls right back to GDI's EngTextOut without changing any of the arguments. The odd behavior is this: An application makes 4 calls to TextOut a.) Regular font weight, right-side up b.) Bold, right-side up c.) Regular, sideways d.) Bold, sideways The right-side up text looks fine, but the sideways text looks different. The characters are wider, the bold characters are heavier, and the regular characters appear slightly stretched (most visible on numerals with loops, like 5 and 8). By sideways I mean rotated 90 degrees. It's the same characters in every instance, same font.  - BSOD shuts down the Harddisk Hi there, i'm looking for a possibility to prevent Windows from shutting down the Harddisk at BSODs. After digging around in the MSDN my nearest findings were at the IRP functions, especially IRP_MJ_POWER I *think* Windows sends a IRP or something else to the Device Driver at it shut down the Drive. But this seems to be depending on the Device Driver itself, because only the Boot-Disk with Standard IDE is shut down, not the other Disk on my RAID-Controller.  - File system emulation We are designing a special-purpose embedded recorder. The storage media is removable and will be connected to a PC via an IDE or SCSI interface (note - several such media can be connected to the PC at the same time). The recorder implements a proprietary file system, which is totally unlike the standard MS file systems (i.e. FAT32, NTFS, etc.). There are many good reasons for that and it is not going to change. The "directory" structure of our proprietary file system is fixed (it contains 2 levels of directories and at most 100 files total). Individual files can be quite large - may exceed 4 GB. We are capable to access our media (performing raw sector read/write accesses) - no problems there. We need to provide to the user the ability to perform standard file operations on our media, using standard Windows utilities (e.g. Windows Explorer). This is important from a marketing perspective. Ideally, we would like the removable media to behave something like an M-Systems Disk On Key (i.e. once the media is inserted, the user will see a new drive and should be able to invoke Explorer operations on it). We understood that this may be difficult to accomplish. Instead, we were advised (in the course of a Microsoft seminar) to perform the following: a) Once sensed that the media is inserted, our software automatically creates a directory (on a normal hard disk). It reads the contents of our media and creates small dummy files in the created directory that "mirror" the files on our media. This directory is removed by our software upon sensing that our media is removed from the PC. b) We install a filter driver beneath the file system (between partmgr.sys and disk.sys). Then, when a user-invoked application (e.g. Windows Explorer) performs some action on one of the dummy files, our driver intercepts the IRP (MJ_READ), performs the operation vis-a-vis our media and completes the IRP vis-a-vis the I/O manager. As far as the user is concerned, it seems as if the operation was performed vis-a-vis the actual file on the media rather than vis-a-vis the dummy file. 1. We tried doing that and found out that instead of logical file offsets, our driver receives physical disk offsets, which is not actually surprising, but it is not good for us - obviously we need to know the logical file offset which the user-invoked application tries to access. 2. Also, we found that it is necessary to make the dummy file as large as the actual file on the media in order to achieve usable results. We achieved this by using SetFilePointer on the dummy file. On a FAT32 disk that takes a significant amount of time for a large (multi-gigabyte) file. On NTFS that does not take time, however when subsequently trying to access the dummy file via Explorer, nothing happened (no requests were received by our driver). Even if ignoring the question of the time it takes to perform SetFilePointer, this approach also requires user's PC to have a large amount of spare storage on his disk, which is problematic from marketing point of view. Also, on FAT32, we were not able to create a file larger than 4 GB, which is not good enough for our application. Can you suggest anything? Thank you for your help.  - Creating a storage driver with multiple bearers for connection. Hi, I am trying to make a storage driver that connects to the device using multiple bearers like USB, Bluetooth or InfraRed. What i mean by this is the storage driver should be loaded by windows when the device comes in contact with the PC by any of the above mentioned means. For this, the model I have thought of uses a two layered approach wherein the first layer handles all the storage functionality and the second layer handles all the connection functionality. Using this model, I can have the first layer common, and vary the second layer for the three means of communication. The problem is that I cannot understand the way in which i can do this (separating the storage and connection part of the driver).  - IM driver not receiving packets for Intel NIC I have a IM driver working fine with all the NIC's accept Intel series. I tried to set ProtocolReceivePacket to NULL as specified in DDK document. But yet ProtocolReceive routine is not called. I kept both the routines none of them is getting called. Moreever when i send OID request OID_GEN_MAXIMUM_LOOKAHEAD,OID_GEN_MAC_OPTIONS , OID_802_3_MAXIMUM_LIST_SIZE , OID_GEN_MAXIMUM_FRAME_SIZE, OID_GEN_CURRENT_PACKET_FILTER the other NIC invokes PtRequestComplete with correct value od OID, but for Intel card it invokes PtRequestComplete for that many times but with OID value of last request.  - 1394 isochronous data corrupted Hello, I'vew written a device driver for Windows XP which receives IEEE1394 isochronous data packets. The devices sends these packets at S400. We use different sizes for the packets and were below 2048 bytes all the time. No problems at all. Now we need packets which can be bigger and must realize that data is corrupted on some PCs. We don't know what these PCs makes different from the others. There seems to be no common thing at all. As I told you before, we receive packets which are bigger than 2048 bytes and some of the packets on some of our PCs are filled with some invalid data quadlets. All wrong quadlets are above the 2048 bytes boundary. The problem occurs also if we send only a few data packets per second (say 20 or so). It is not really depending on CPU load but if we move windows on the desktop we increase the frequency of the wrong quadlets. The wrong data is not from the same packet or from one of the others (we generated sythetic data for these tests). A frequent pattern is: 6 or 7 wrong quadlets, every second is 0x0. We use XP and XP SP1 (I did not test XP SP2 because a software I need for the tests doesn't run at all under SP2. It's not from our company so I have to wait for their next release.) I use the following parameters for REQUEST_ISOCH_ALLOCATE_RESOURCES: Irb->u.IsochAllocateResources.fulFlags = RESOURCE_USED_IN_LISTENING | RESOURCE_USE_PACKET_BASED|RESOURCE_STRIP_ADDITIONAL_QUADLETS; Irb->u.IsochAllocateResources.nQuadletsToStrip = 1; Irb->u.IsochAllocateResources.nMaxBytesPerFrame = 4096; Irb->u.IsochAllocateResources.nMaxBufferSize = someFactor * 4096; If I didn't do something wrong I can't believe I'm the only person in universe which has that problem?!  - Ndis packet filter Hello, I'm doing research on the possibility of making a packet filter based on the idea of patching the NDIS_MINIPORT_CHARACTERISTICS structure with your own functions. In my SendPacket(s)Handler I make a copy of the original packet and send it to the original function and in my NdisMSendComplete I free the packet. The copy of the packet is made based on the pass through IM sample code. This works well for most of the real and virtual NICs with one exception so far, an IntelPRO/100 on board card. With this NIC after about 15-20 packets the original SendPackets function will access a NULL pointer causing a bug check. If I let the original packets pass through, everything works, so my guess is that my set-up for the packet is wrong, and probably the NDIS is doing some set-up on the packes before sending them to the miniports. The NIC seems to be a bus master adaptor, so, the NDIS is probably doing DMA related initialization on the NDIS_PACKET before sending it to the miniports.  - Virtual network adapters Hi, I have written a virtual network adapter/Virtual miniort driver(NDIS). I want to send the data i receive in my virtual adapter's MiniportSend funcion across network using a network device. Inorder to do that, the packet i have received in virtual miniport driver's MiniportSend has to be passed to MiniportSend of miniport driver. NDIS intermediate drivers passes the packet to the miniport driver using NdisSend. Since the driver i have written is not an intermediate driver,NdisSend function can not be used to send the packet to a miniport driver. NdisSend function requires the binding handle which a virtual miniport driver can not have. Only NDIS intermediate driver can get a binding handle which it can use in NdisSend. Could you let me know how can i pass the packet to the MiniportSend of miniport driver from my MiniportSend of virtual miniport driver?  - driver instalation Hi All, I've a HID pointer device and my driver isn't signed with WQHL. If I install my driver manually or using a simple tool like FASTINST from Walter Oney' book and then connect my USB device, the windows hid.sys driver loads instead of my driver (as expected, because my driver isn't signed with WQHL). But, After running the device manager and clicking above the windows driver and updating it to my driver, Every time a plug my devive, my driver loads as expected (good, it's the final rsult I want from my instalation). I would like to do some steps (I guess hacking the windows registry) to install my driver just once and get it load when I plug my device without manually enter in Device Manager and updating it. I feel good with the message "..this driver ins't signed...", I would like just to avoid the second manual step into device manager.  - Reading Device Parameters in Registry In my driver I am attempting to read some parameters stored in my board's Device Parameters subkey. I am calling IoOpenDeviceRegistryKey, with PLUGPLAY_REGKEY_DEVICE KeyType, to open the Key and calling ZwQueryValueKey to get the partial info structure. The problem is that the data returned in the partial info structure is always some random value. The data length and type returned in the structure are correct though. The status returned by both IoOpenDeviceRegistryKey and ZwQueryValueKey indicates success. Also, I have been able to set the value using ZwSetValueKey and view this new value in regedit.  - IM protocol driver performance and optimization We are currently working on software for XP where we need to receive a 70 Mbyte/s data stream via GbE. The data is basically raw Ethernet packets with a simple proprietary protocol. Currently we use a modified NDISUIO to receive the data and process the proprietary protocol in the user level since that makes debugging much easier. Preliminary hotspot analysis using Intel VTune shows that a lot of time is spent doing memory copies. To reduce this we thought of moving the protocol into the kernel. To do this I have looked at the DDK passthru sample and at IMSAMP. The latter seems to be better in terms of avoiding unnecessary memory copies. Is an IM protocol driver the "way to go" or are there better ways of doing this? What is the performance penalty to be expected from an IM protocol driver? I would like to avoid putting the protocol into NDISUIO directly because it seems to make things very complex in NDISUIO. The task manager as an instrument to measure CPU load is very unreliable.  - FONTOBJ_pwszFontFilePaths question Hello I am writing a user mode printer driver for Win XP/2000 and I need to find out the font file names for the fonts passed in DrvTextOut(). In the DDK documentation I found that FONTOBJ_pwszFontFilePaths seems to return the exact information I want. But I could not use it, and here I have some questions: 1. Is the FONTOBJ_pwszFontFilePaths working only in the kernel mode drivers? Because mine is a user mode driver, so could it be that I cannot use it at all? 2. The DDK documentation says that we have to find the function address by calling EngFindImageProcAddress function. This seems to work only in kernel mode drivers and returns always NULL pointers when I call it from the user mode driver. So I used instead GetProcAddress() function: typedef VOID (*FONTFILEPROC)(FONTOBJ*, ULONG); HMODULE hMod = GetModuleHandle(TEXT("GDI32.dll")); FONTFILEPROC ProcAdd = (FONTFILEPROC) GetProcAddress(hMod, "FONTOBJ_pwszFontFilePaths") This seems to work for other FONTOBJ_xxx services but not for FONTOBJ_pwszFontFilePaths.  - very stranger questiones about disk read write on Windows XP HI, all, i am writing a disk filter driver (class upperfilter), it works fine on Windows 2000 , but cannot work on Windows XP. After debug the driver, i found, Asynch Read sometimes failed. In the DispathRead Routine, i first read some specific sectors ,then do the system read operation. By read the specific sectors, i am using Asynch Read, set a event to wait for the completion,after read complte, i check the IoStatus.Status, sometimes the value is not STATUS_SUCCESS. why ? If i do not check the IoStatus.Status, it works fine. In Windows 2000, the value is always STATUS_SUCCESS. Anyway, i cannot understand this, who can help me out?  - HID minidriver : ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED error message Hi, I have developed a HID minidriver for a USB keyboard which is not a standard one. This is targetted to work on Win2k and WinXP. In my application, I'm calling HIDd_GetGuid(..) and later am calling the normal SetupDiXXX(..) routines to get teh device name. After this, I'm calling CreateFile(..) to open a handle. Here, it is returning INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE. The parameters are : name, GENERIC_READ|GENERIC_WRITE, 0, OPEN_EXISTING, FILE_ATTRIBUTES_NORMAL, NULL. When I call GetLastError(), its showing 5 == ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED. One more observation is : When I call the same CraeteFile(..) with dwDesiredAccess = 0, its openeing a handle.  - Virtual Serial Port Driver and CreateFile My virtual serial port driver seems to work fine. I used lot of code from serial driver example in the DDK for external naming etc. HyperTerminal successfully opens the virtual port etc. However, when I try to open the port using CreateFile call (CreateFile("COM106:"...)), I get an error (123).  - HID pointing device and the Virtual Desktop I have a HID device driver for an absolute pointing device attached to an XP computer with mulitple monitors. Everything I have read tells me the pointing device should map across the whole virtual desktop : this would allow me to choose which monitor to control by simple offsetting of the coordinate data. However, the device will only ever map to the Primary Desktop : no amount of scaling or offsetting of the coordinates can get the pointer over to the sencondary display at all. What is going on? I know a standard WACOM HID device will go over both desktops, so it can't be mouhid that's the problem.  - Notification Window In a Dll I've been posting questions relate to this for a few days now. Yesterday I was criticized for not providing enough information. I always have mixed feelings about posting too much information, because I believe many will tire of reading, and move on. But, I'll give this a try.  - PnP Signed Driver Problem - Serial Device I originally posted a message out here regarding this issue and had some great feedback. To summarize, we mfg a serial device that someone in marketing wanted to make PnP. Since we did not require any drivers, we were able to create an INF file and everything worked â?? UNTIL Microsoft implemented the signing. Now, even though the INF is in the INF folder, the end-user is being queried to add the hardware. We want that to go away. Someone out here recommended that we go through the process of getting a signature; we obtained a signed test driver from Microsoft, yet we are still getting the same results. It's worth pointing out that these two errors are not necessarily bad (the second one, especially, is just ChkInf being excessively picky). As far as I can tell, the first error is unavoidable until your driver is WHQL certified. If you are still in development or for whatever reason aren't planning to certify (maybe because it's an internal tool), you can't do anything about that. It seems to me that the second error isn't even an error; the DDK specifically says that you can create a new class if your device doesn't fit into one of the pre-defined classes.  - pnp... timeout? Hello, I am trying to install all the device drivers via winbom (sysprep in factory mode) but for some reasons it takes so @#$%-ing long time. My OS is WinXP SP2. First, I see several activities on the system's hard disk but then... it just stays idle (hard disk LED doesn't blink at all). It stays in this mode for a while. Then it boots up to Windows, and sysprep "still" waits for PnP to finish. This also takes some time. My best guess is PnP is timed out because there're still some bangs in the device manager and when I reboot the system, PnP runs again and fixes those bangs. We are looking at adding support for ipv6. I see in the documentation that the first parameter passed to the callback function is the PacketHeader defined as IPHeader. This IPHeader is specific to ipv4. Will this filter hook allow us to see v6 packets? If so, does it pass a different structure if the packet is v6?  - retrieving the physical location of a volume on one or more disks Hi, The IOCTL_VOLUME_GET_VOLUME_DISK_EXTENTS retrieves the physical location of a specified volume on one or more disks. However, this control code is not supported on win2k, which is a platform I must support. Does anyone know a method for retrieving this information that will work on win2k? In an unrelated discussion I noticed someone mentioned that this control code will not work for USB devices, it works fine for me though. The only reason I can think of that this would not work on USB devices is that the PDO for Removable Storage is disk.sys and since disk.sys is not a Volume Manager (like ftdisk.sys, for example), it might not support this control code. But as I mentioned, it seems that the control code works for all types of disks, even if they are Removal Storage and/or USB.  - NDIS intermediate driver & Cisco VPN client problem on XP SP1 Hi Our company is currently developing an NDIS intermediate driver called Sesam that implements client part of Mobile IP protocol. Sesam works in two states - enabled and disabled. In disabled mode it behaves as pass-through intermediate driver. It passes all packets unchanged as if it would not be in TCPIP stack. Sesam is supposed to be compatible with Cisco VPN Client in a way that Cisco VPN tunnel is inner tunnel inside of Sesam Mobile IP tunnel. We have successfuly tested compatibility of our product with Cisco VPN Client on Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP2. It worked with Sesam either enabled or disabled. Our driver binds directly below Deterministic Network Enhancer (DNE) driver. This DNE driver is used by Cisco VPN Client for IPSec tunneling. When we analyzed packets that come through our driver from DNE when VPN was establishing VPN connection. All packets were on ports 500 or 4500 and everything worked as it was supposed. However we encountered severe problems on Windows XP SP1 when connecting using dialup connection (GPRS or UMTS) and our Sesam driver was disabled. On this platform we received only packets on strange ports and each next packet had this port incremented by 1. Eg 1395, 1396, 1397 etc. It is very strange because on Windows XP SP2 we receive normal packets on ports 500 or 4500. We believe that this problem is caused by a change in NDIS handling of loopback packets as described in: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];813542 This hypothesis is also supported by by a fact that in SP2 it works flawlessly and among SP2 bug fixes at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=838207 we have found this one: "Update to permit the Cisco VPN Client program to work in TCP transport mode in Windows XP SP2 After you install a pre-release version of Windows XP SP2, if you configure Cisco VPN Client version 4.0.3.D to use Internet Protocol security (IPSec) over TCP, you receive the following error message when you try to connect to a Cisco VPN concentrator: Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client. Reason 414: Failed to establish a TCP connection. This problem occurs because the TCP/IP protocol is changed to drop any packets that are directed to the loopback IP address, but that arrive on an interface other than the loopback interface. Because the Cisco VPN client sends packets to the loopback IP address, but the packet comes from a physical interface, the packets are dropped. " Since we need our driver to be compatible with Cisco VPN Client on XP SP1, we would like to know exactly how did handling of loopback packets change in XP, how it was fixed in SP2 and whether there is some workaround of this on SP1.  - Debugging PnP Notification I'm trying to get PnP notifications to a Window to work. I created a special window for this purpose in my user mode dll. I register for notifications from the particular device interface guid. I see that my WindowProc gets called for general WM_ messages, but so far, I don't see my device PnP messages.  - CDC Virtual Serial Com Port doesn't pnp on USB. We have a working CDC device that used default windows and linux cdc drivers to form a logical virtual serial port. All we use is an inf file and the device works and we can open hyperterminal(HT) and talk to the device. If we unplug the device and HT is still running and we don't close the port the USB device enumerates as another comport. So HT must close the port previously used and restart, then we have to plug the device out again o have it reenumerate as the com port it was before. Now HT can open the port again. We have another serialtousb adapter that needs a driver. If open the port with HT and (un)plug the device the port stays open and when I connect it again HT still works on the same port. Our device needs to stay on the same comm port even when the application still has it openend. But the CDC driver seems not to support that. Can anyone shed some light in this matter?  - Adding PNP Handling to a Tdi Filter .. Hi, I have got a Legacy NT style Tdi Filter Driver, and I need to add PNP handling code in to it.It is installed as a member of PNP TDI group,So i belive it gets the PNP Irps.In order to Convert it in a Fashion where it can handle the PNP Irps What are the general steps or changes it requires to be done ? Hi,

I am trying to use IOCTL_STORAGE_RESET_BUS.
I have a set up where two Windows Machines are sharing a library over SAN
(using Brocade silkworm 2400 switch). One of the machines is windows 2003
server and other is windows 2000 server.

IOCTL_STORAGE_RESET_BUS actually works on W2K3 machine (HBA is Emulex
LightPulse 9000) and it clears all Previous SCSI Reservations (done using
SCSI command 0x16) on the drives in the library and I could see Event in
Windows Event Viewer saying that SCSI bus has been reset on request. I could
then reserve the same drive from another machine.

Problem is that IOCTL_STORAGE_RESET_BUS on W2K machine returns success but
(this one is Q-Logic QLA2340 HBA) it doesnâ??t clear previous reservations made
on drives. I see event in windows event viewer after that saying that â??The
device, \Device\Scsi\xxxxxxx, did not respond within the timeout period.â??
I enabled options to allow Target Device Reset from QLogic Bios
Configuration Utility-Advanced Adapter Options but that didnâ??t help.

On w2k3 system, I tried it with both Scsiport-Miniport and Storport-miniport
drivers and it worked and clears reservations. But on w2k system it doesnâ??t
clear the SCSI reservation.

Anyone has any Idea why this might be happening?
Any help on this will be really appreciated.
