    - SetupDiGetDeviceRegistryProperty - Usb - Address - Busnumber Gentlemen, I have several composite devices which are equal running on a pc. My problem is, I want to find out which interfaces belong together (to the same composite device). In order to find out if two interfaces are form a composite device, i want to read out the address and busnumber and compare both. If equal than these two devices are on the same composite device. The problem is, the API call "SetupDiGetDeviceRegistryProperty" returns only a string with 4 spaces. I got no address or busnumber. I work with Windows Xp . I will appreciate every help.     - TDI listen hangs. How to know, why? Hello, I try to make my TCP TDI client to listen for connection (that is I try to bring the server side of the connection up). This is, I hope, 5 steps process: 1) Open transport address. (I use 0.0.0.0:5000) 2) Open connection endpoint 3) Associate transport with the connection 4) Hook some event grabbers (I have set event handlers for TDI_EVENT_CONNECT and TDI_EVENT_RECEIVE) 5) Listen... The first 4 steps of the 5 succeed, but the last TDI_LISTEN CallDriver return STATUS_PENDING which never ends. (below please find a code fragment). I expected that TDI listen request must never hang, because this is (i hope) a transport service "mode" setting only. What could be the reason for it to hang? How to make the server listen?     - FILE STREAMS:??? I'm trying to use an alternate data stream to contain information about some files I wish to manage. However I am very confused about certain semantics. In particular if FileA has an alternate stream Meta, then I might have two streams FileA (FileA::$DATA) and FileA:Meta. When FileA is opened for write, it seems that FileA:Meta is getting nuked. I would like to get a better understanding of the conditions under which FileA::$DATA can be written to without disturbing FileA:Meta, etc. Also, what about security? My question is where is this config change persisted? (e.g. in the registry or FileSystem) I guess it will initially write the change to the volatile area in the registry CurrentControlSet\Enum\..., but it does not appear to write the change to the related keys under the hardware profile area of the registry.     - Determine whether a user is administrator in device driver context Linux can call a function capable(CAP_SYS_ADMIN) to check whether the current user is root. Does windows xp/vista has similar ways to do this? Below is what I'm doing now. I use psGetCurrentProcess to get the current process and use ObGetObjectSecurity to get security descriptor of this process. The next step seems to call SeAccessCheck but this function asks for several parameters that I don't know how to retrieve. For example, one of them is SECURITY_SUBJECT_CONTEXT. The only function related to this I can find in DDK is SeCaptureSubjectContext. But this function is supported only in file system drivers as described in MSDN.     - Who Triggers the USB suspend? Gone through the USB spec but I am too confused. I have few questions. Hope I get reply to them here:- 1. USB Device goes into the suspend mode when there is not bus- activity for 3 ms. Does this means that the USB device is monitoring the bus? I believe that the host will monitor the bus not device, when there is no activity host will SET Suspend on the port. Am I correct? 2. There is SOF frame/Keep Alive coming to the device to avoid device going to suspend mode. Who triggers this SOF Frame, Host Controller hardware or Host Controller driver or our device's driver? 3. Apart from no bus activity what are the other conditions in which host can send suspend signal to the device? 4. How does the USB device hardware behave on recieving the suspend? Will it Pull down the D+ resistor. If yes how will it recover back to the resume state? 5. If my device hardware doesnt support suspend/resume, how will the host react. Calls MmAllocatePagesForMdl() to allocate a big (1 GB or more) buffer without using any virtual memory. 2. On behave of a user process that needs to map a part of this buffer, calls IoAllocateMdl(), IoBuildPartialMdl() and MmMapLockedPagesSpecifyCache() inside the context of this process to return a valid virtual address for this process. 2. On behave of a user process that needs to unmap a part of this buffer, calls MmUnmapLockedPages() and IoFreeMdl() to free the resources. My question is: how can I restrict the access of the user process to its mapping to PAGE_READONLY? By default, MmMapLockedPagesSpecifyCache() gives PAGE_READWRITE rights.     - URGENT: Strange problem during installation a device drivers on W Hello, I have the most unusual problem, I have a Cypress FX2 custom device that is using Cypress firmware loader via a driver for initial VID/PID and then the debice reboots with another VID/PID and asks for another driver. This combination worked perfectly for something like 3 years than suddenly during the installation I have this strange problem: The device is recognized when inserted in the USB port, when pointed to the INF file it starts copying the sys file than it stales ( I have this folder icon flying showing the sys file being copyed to the diver directory and the operation never finishes ). If I remove the device from the USB port then the operation completes correcly, the Finish pannel comes up and a message that the device was installed correctly but may not work if the suystem is not rebooted comes up. No matter if I reboot or not, the device appear in the COntrol Pannel with its correct name as given in the inf file and no yellow warning, in the properties it says that is associated with the correct binary driver, the driver file is present and OK BUT in the General tab there is a message that this device has no driver installed !!! And of course the device doesn't work at all. If I try to uninstall the driver with the device plugged in the uninstalling also stalles until the device is removed then if is removed it seem to be done OK and if I try reinstalling it happens again as is described above. I'm really lost on what is happening, it looks like some weird permission problem but I'm able to delete the freshly copied file from the drivers directory without any problem while this stalled operation is there and I even disabled system resore. Nothing seem to help and is happening on multiple system in very different configurations, all what they have in common is that are having the latest official updates. I've checked the INF file with checkinf and is ok, no warnings or errors, I've enabled some DbgPrint in the driver, including right on the beginning, they are not called at all when the copying operation stalles, and what is worse in some like 5-10% of the cases the installation rutine succedes and once installed the driver perfoms flawlessly. I'm really getting desperate because I have no other debug optins of I can think of, if somebody encountered this or has some pointers of what to try to pinpoint that problem I'll be most gratefull.     - Drivers and different Operating Systems. Hello there... I'm in the beginning of my journey to explore strange new worlds and to boldly go where no man (or driver developer) has gone before... I was interested to know how the internals of a utility named FreeOTFE work (http://www.freeotfe.org). The GUI part was written in Delphi and the Drivers etc part was written in C. The source code was given by the developer. I'm trying to find how this utility works with different Operating Systems (to be specific XP and Vista). A file named FreeOTFE.c (under \src\drivers\DRIVER\src) contain some definitions such as driver's entry point , driver's unload function ,Destroy the specified device object ,Handle device control IRPs etc. I've seen that the following condition appear many times in the code: VER_PRODUCTBUILD >= 2600 I understood that the DDK includes a header file named NTVERP.H that defines this constant VER_PRODUCTBUILD. This constant is related to the build numbers of the OS that the DDK is designed for (NT 4.0 1381, Windows 2000 2195 ,Windows XP 2600 and Vista is 6000?), So this condition checks the driver's ability to support the OS that have build number above 2600 (XP and Vista)? What I need to seek in the code to see different behavior for different OS? What parameters/functions are related to the way a driver works with different OS?     - WDF Coinstaller and my coinstaller I've updated an existing WDM driver (for a PCI card) to KMDF 1.5, and everything is working fine, except for one thing: the existing driver also installed a coinstaller (to provide an extra property page). I modified the INF file to add the WDF-related stuff, and now I don't get the property page. It appears to me that WDF is listed as "the" coinstaller in the registry. So, how does one arrange things in the INF to include both the WDF coinstaller and the driver's coinstaller? I didn't want to post the INF (before and/or after converting to KMDF) to reduce the noise level, but I can do that if it will help.     - Vista change in behavior in TDI and Irp->PendingReturned Flag There are two problems I run in to when doing a "disconnect" test using TDI and TCP. I am able to transfer data normally over a TCP connection, but when I have the usermode server close the socket during a transfer, the kernel client behaves strangely in Vista (both 32 and 64) vs XP. After allocating an irp (IoAllocateIrp) and setting up my stack location (completion routine set via TdiBuildSend macro), I call IoCallDriver which after the server has disconnected never returns. It calls into my completion routine with the "PendingReturned" flag which to me seems to say that the OS should have returned the call to IoCallDriver with STATUS_PENDING and queued a work item to handle the request. Instead, the call is synchronous and my completion routine runs. My completion routine will resubmit the irp and start another transfer if the status is successful. In XP the second request (made from the completion routine) return synchronously with PendingReturned flag NOT set with a bad status in the IoStatusBlock member of the irp (STATUS_INVALID_DEVICE_STATE); fine and dandy, my completion routine does not resubmit, the stack unwinds, great! Vista, however, not only handles every call to IoCallDriver synchronously (even though it sends the PendingReturned flag to 1), but every single call returns a good status in the IoStatusBlock member of the irp! The data transfered is 0, but the status is good. What changed? Any ideas what could be going wrong?     - USB debugger I have Windows vista home premium with 64-bit AMD and EHCI USB. Will special USB cable work with this target. I read like you need debugport exposed, BIOS and all that. How do I even know before I buy that USB debugger will work for sure? I dont know about others, but setting up debugger is becoming big headache. PC we buy are not coming with serial ports. Virtual USB serial ports wont help. I am developing firewire driver and dont want to use debugging over firewire 1394.     - How to obtain HDD-Serialnumber without adminrights Hi there, This is a often asked question, but i didnt find a working answer for it. Im searching for a method to obtain the serialnumber of my harddrive Without adminrights. Tools like Everest are able to read this serialnumber, but i wasn't able to find a working solution which works without admin rights.     - Defects.xml has malformed references - Model File Error? DTM fails one of my defects.xml files and it looks like prefast populated the file with malformed references in some areas and this appears to be causing the Prefast for Drivers test to fail. It seems that there is a problem with the way prefast generated the file and the way DTM parses the file. The prefast viewer says "Model File Error - A probable error was found in the model file".     - how to get Filemon.exe type of data I am both a C/C++ and a C#.Net developer. I am currently working on a C#.Net program that needs to monitor for changes in files. I am finding that the System.IO.FileSystemWatcher simply does not do the trick. There are two major issues: 1: Knowing when the file is REALLY closed so I can open it. 2: Knowing which process had it open so that I know to ignore the changes or not. It seems that filemon.exe is able to find out both of these things and I am wondering how it finds it out. Am I going to have to write my own driver? Never done that before, but I am open to new things. Is there an easier way? Some of the programs that are changes the monitored files do not change the last modified attribute, so it seems the only 100% sure way to CRC32 the files, am I correct or is there yet another way?     - TraceEvents in KMDF Dear All, In the WinDDK\6001\src\kmdf\hidusbfx2\sys and hidmapper code, I find the usage of traceevents. The trace is initialized in the DriverEntry function using WPP_INIT_TRACING. When I copy hidusbfx2.pdb to tools-traceview folder and launch traceviewer, it says cannot find pdb file on selecting add provider. I am able to add the provider of UMDF sample. The same problem for the UMDF sample is resolved by copying dbghelp.dll from bin to trace directory. Do I need to copy any other kernel related dll in the case of KMDF. On running tracepdb it gives the information that WPPFMT no trace entries are found in hidusbfx2.pdb Can somebody kindly suggest the way to view given traceevents in KMDF sample. Regards. In some of the machines I am able to build sample drivers provided by Microsoft Win DDK. But in some of the machines driver build is getting failed. Following is the problem description: 1. I have tried to build the driver located at: C:\winddk\6000\src\usb \bulkusb\sys. This is just a sample driver from DDK. 2. First I tried to build with options: build -ceZ, then it built successfully with no errors or warnings. 3. Then I kept generated files in the same folders and again tried to build the same with options: build -ceZ. 4.     - Host Controller questions I need to be able to list the current available host controllers in the system. I need this for WIN2k , win XP and higher. I am aware of the GUID_CLASS_USB_HOST_CONTROLLER which works in conjunction with the Setup API's to list the host controllers in the system. 1 ) However This does not work on Windows 2k . Is there an alternate mechanism to detect the host controllers other than doing this (similar to usb view ) that uses the name of the HCI as "\\\\.\ \HCD%d" and subsequently calls CreateFile() . ? If this is the only method on Win2k , how do i obtain the device instance handle for the host controller obtained using this ? 2)I need to be able to find host controllers in the system even if they are disabled in device manager . XP --> How do I need to use the Setup API's in order to do this ? Is there some special flag to include these disabled devices ? I would not want the list of previously configured devices and not present in the system currently . Win2k -->When Host controllers are disabled , the above method of using "\\\\.\\HCD%d" as the HC identifier fails and no host controllers are returned In such a case , i would want a common logic to be able to query for host controllers in the system.     - Fail to get the second interface handle of USB composite device on XP SP2 I'm developing usb video class (UVC) driver. UVC device consists of two interfaces - control and stream interface. It's described as one interface collection by IAD. USB Common Class Generic Parent Driver (usbccgp.sys) of XP SP2 will be load first for UVC device and create a PDO for the video interface collection. I would develop my UVC driver for the video interface collection. My problem is that I cannot get the handle of interface 1 after the driver send set configuration Urb. Only interface 0's information is filled in returned Urb though I can parse interface 1's descriptor from the configuration descriptor. I ever tried to modify my INF to fit the device ID directly. That is, usbccgp.sys is not load for my device. The handles of interface 0 and 1 are filled in returned Urb after the driver send set configuration request. I have checked the created Urb for these two cases. The contents of Urb are the same. Is any suggestion about this problem? What should be cared when usbccgp.sys is load?     - Controlling connected Access Point through DeviceIoControl on Vista Hi, I want to be able to scan for the best access point, and control connection programatically. I need to do this to improve the handover time whilst streaming live audio/video. I am trying to do this by using two wireless adapters, one to do the streaming and the second to continuously scan for the best AP, and when I determine there is a better AP to use I can get the streaming adapter to disconnect/reconnect. I have this working on XP using NDISUIO. However on Vista the call to start the scan fails with error code 1008 (0x3F0). ERROR_INVALID_TOKEN. I've tried changing the code to use the NDIS 6 OIDs, but with no success. I can't find IOCTL_NDISUIO_QUERY_OID_VALUE in the Vista DDK, so it appears that Microsoft don't support this route and want me to use the Native WiFi API instead. However I can't find any way of disabling scanning on one of the adapters using the Native WiFi API. NDIS 6 seems to allow setting a "Media Streaming" mode which disables scanning.     - PCI : try to get parent's device config space Hi list, I have an issue with a PCI express device : it does not wakeup the system although it send correctly PM_PME messages in the bus (I checked with a protocol analyser). Thus, I try to know if the system recieve this message. Fortunatly a register located in the Root port's config space (my device's parent) allow me to know that. SO I gogglelized and I discovered that HalGetBusData(), or HalGetBusDataByOffset(), are my friends. OK, I know that thoses two functions are obsoletes etc.... But : 1) they are still active in WInCE, AGP drivers. So they don't seem completlty obsolete. 2) The IRP_MN_QUERY_INTERFACE and IRP_MN_READ_CONFIG need a PDO. I don't know how to get parent's device PDO [any volunteer for help ? :o)] 3) I need to read parent's device config space only_for_debug_purpose, so not following this rule is not that annoying. Then, in my driver, I added : - HalGetBusDataByOffset() prototype, - some structure declaration, - hal.lib, in the depencies libraies list Compilation goe well....     - Driver does not unload, probably because Irp I have started porting a driver to NDIS 6.0 and have registered a device (NdisRegisterDeviceEx). I am able to communicate with the driver using DeviceIOControl. The problem is that after doing a DeviceIOControl the driver does not unload (i.e. MiniportHalt is called but Miniport unload is not). MiniportHalt calls NdisDeregisterDeviceEx and I have no queued IRPs. All IRP:s are completed (IoCompleteRequest and the single exit point in my dispatch function) but I still suspect I have overlooked something. Hi all, Said in one line: I would like to be able to access to all the keys of an Apple new aluminium keyboard on my PC (windows XP and up) Sorry If I ask dumb questions but I'm a total newbye in terms of windows drivers :) I bougth an Apple new aluminum keyboard to use on my PC. I'm not an Apple fan but I have to admit that this keyboard is excellent. The problem is the software. The software is not included in the box as only OSX is supported out of the box. They are windows XP (no x64 support) but they work pretty badly on something else than an Apple computer. Tried searching the web, found a lot of samples but my knowledge is too limited ritgh know to exploit them in the way I want. The keyboard once plugged in is recognized as a standad HID device. Most of the keys are working but some are not mapped correctly as they are located elsewhere on the keyboard. Then we have "special" keys. Especially two keys that I cannot manage to get access to directly (meaning without using the Apple softawre). It's an open/close CD tray and an Fn key that is used as a modifier for half of the F-serie keys. For example, Fn+F10 is sound off, Fn+F11, sound up etc. So, the software provided comes in two parts. The first part seems to be a simple usb filter that is re-mapping the PC key layout to the Apple key layout. The second part is a residant tool named as the Bott Camp control panel. This one is totally buggy. More in this later. That tool seems to provide the support for the special keys. Here is a short list of the problems I have: - the keyboard driver is missplacing a couple of keys. - the boot camp tool does only work properly on Apple hardware. But accepts to launch and provides me most of the features I can expect from the keyboard except that it carshes often, freezes my PC, crashes my PC, is poorly implemented: the Fn default key state is stored in the registry and is polled from there by the tool. - with all this installed, my second PC keyboard has it's keys switched to the Apple layout ;) - more... To the point :-) I would like to get rid of those tools and code my own solution. Getting the correct layout is just a "MS keyboard layout creator" ahead. But the biggets problem for me is to get access to those two special keys. I tried Emma burrom's rawinput approach: http://www.codeproject.com/cs/system/rawinput.asp But the two keys I cannot catch are the CD tray open/close key and make the Fn combinaisons work. The only key that makes rawinput react with the Fn key is F7, I'm getting the following message: {msg=0xff hwnd=0xb09f8 wparam=0x0 lparam=0x6ab0211 result=0x0} Anyway... My question is simple... hum ;) how can I get access to the CD tray key and to the Fn+key combinations? I have a USB modem device. The modem driver is working in Windows XP.
You know. I've rebuilded the source code to do the modem test in Windows
Vista.
But it didn't work in Windows Vista x86 and x64.
It was working a few months ago in Windows Vista.

As of present, Suddenly it didn't work in Windows Vista.
After executing RasDial function, it showed up the error message as belows:
The specified port is already in use or is not configured for remote access
dial-out.

I checked communicating from the device by Dignosis Tool.
The device is worked to reply for AT command.
I don't know why. Could you explain me about this situation?
I'm very confused this situation.
