    - Windows XP & non-paged pool Dear All, At my driver I need a really huge memory buffer. I am trying to allocate it from non-paged memory pool, since I need to perform a series of DMA transfers from lots of PCI devices installed in the system. Actually, every instance of my driver requires about 24 Megs of memory and we are planning to have about 16 such devices installed. What a disaster, I can load drivers only for 6 my devices, all other fail on allocating memory from non-paged pool. I decided to allocate memory from paged pool and lock it down in physical memory, using MmProbeAndLockPages(), but was able to load only 4 instances of my driver. What I am doing wrong?     - IJolietDiscMaster->AddData returning STG_E_INVALIDFUNCTION Hi there, I am attempting to add a previously created IStorage container to an IJolietDiscMaster interface, although the file appears to have been created correctly and no errors were returned during it's creation, nor the streams that were added to it, unfortunately it returns STG_E_INVALIDFUNCTION.     - to call driverentry from service How can i make a Driverentry point called in sys file? I used checked build for XP to build the sys file. I have only written Driverentry and Driverunload in it.     - talking directly to drivers Hello, I want to talk directly to the direct3d drivers without going through the COM direct3d api, I want to directly call D3dContextCreate, D3dDrawPrimitive2 etc. functions that are exposed by the driver. I want to reinvent the wheel, just as the COM d3d api usermode dll is one alternative to get to the driver, I want to make my own alternative. However I don't know how to do this. It all starts with an application in usermode loading my usermode dll providing an alternative to the COM api. How does my usermode dll penetrate into the kernel driver ?     - IMAPI Development Hi there, I am trying to write a C++ DLL that allows me to burn data CDs. I've been following the following article, http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/04/04/CQA/ Unfortunately I am stuck as the CDiscMaster.GetActiveDiscRecorder fails, as does the SetActiveDiscRecorder method. The recorders are enumerated fine and I store them in a CSimpleArray object for index based referencing. I can acquire information on the recorders, i.e. Path and PnPID, but Eject does not work, nor does setting an active recorder as mentioned a moment ago. Any ideas what could be going wrong? Nick.     - 1394 hardware I recently bought a 1394 PCI adapter for the desktop PC, which is the debugging target. My notebook is the host and a 4-pin connector on the notebook and a 6-pin on the desktop adapter connects the two machines. Unfortunately, it's not working. Real audio recording device (RARD) and a Virtual audio device (VAD). To test how to record sound on playback device , i try to do as follow : 1. Open GraphEdit (directX 2003). 2. Insert RAPD , VAD and RARD and make a connect between these filter . 3. Play an audio file in windows media player 9. I've rebuilded the source code to do the modem test in Windows Vista. But it didn't work in Windows Vista x86 and x64. It was working a few months ago in Windows Vista. My problem is, I want to find out which interfaces belong together (to the same composite device). In order to find out if two interfaces are form a composite device, i want to read out the address and busnumber and compare both. If equal than these two devices are on the same composite device. This is, I hope, 5 steps process: 1) Open transport address. (I use 0.0.0.0:5000) 2) Open connection endpoint 3) Associate transport with the connection 4) Hook some event grabbers (I have set event handlers for TDI_EVENT_CONNECT and TDI_EVENT_RECEIVE) 5) Listen...     - FILE STREAMS:??? I'm trying to use an alternate data stream to contain information about some files I wish to manage. However I am very confused about certain semantics. In particular if FileA has an alternate stream Meta, then I might have two streams FileA (FileA::$DATA) and FileA:Meta. When FileA is opened for write, it seems that FileA:Meta is getting nuked. I would like to get a better understanding of the conditions under which FileA::$DATA can be written to without disturbing FileA:Meta, etc. Also, what about security? My question is where is this config change persisted? (e.g. in the registry or FileSystem) I guess it will initially write the change to the volatile area in the registry CurrentControlSet\Enum\..., but it does not appear to write the change to the related keys under the hardware profile area of the registry.     - Determine whether a user is administrator in device driver context Linux can call a function capable(CAP_SYS_ADMIN) to check whether the current user is root. Does windows xp/vista has similar ways to do this? Below is what I'm doing now. I use psGetCurrentProcess to get the current process and use ObGetObjectSecurity to get security descriptor of this process. The next step seems to call SeAccessCheck but this function asks for several parameters that I don't know how to retrieve. For example, one of them is SECURITY_SUBJECT_CONTEXT. The only function related to this I can find in DDK is SeCaptureSubjectContext. But this function is supported only in file system drivers as described in MSDN.     - Who Triggers the USB suspend? Gone through the USB spec but I am too confused. I have few questions. Hope I get reply to them here:- 1. USB Device goes into the suspend mode when there is not bus- activity for 3 ms. Does this means that the USB device is monitoring the bus? I believe that the host will monitor the bus not device, when there is no activity host will SET Suspend on the port. Am I correct? 2. There is SOF frame/Keep Alive coming to the device to avoid device going to suspend mode. Who triggers this SOF Frame, Host Controller hardware or Host Controller driver or our device's driver? 3. Apart from no bus activity what are the other conditions in which host can send suspend signal to the device? 4. How does the USB device hardware behave on recieving the suspend? Will it Pull down the D+ resistor. If yes how will it recover back to the resume state? 5. If my device hardware doesnt support suspend/resume, how will the host react. On behave of a user process that needs to unmap a part of this buffer, calls MmUnmapLockedPages() and IoFreeMdl() to free the resources. My question is: how can I restrict the access of the user process to its mapping to PAGE_READONLY? By default, MmMapLockedPagesSpecifyCache() gives PAGE_READWRITE rights.     - URGENT: Strange problem during installation a device drivers on W Hello, I have the most unusual problem, I have a Cypress FX2 custom device that is using Cypress firmware loader via a driver for initial VID/PID and then the debice reboots with another VID/PID and asks for another driver. This combination worked perfectly for something like 3 years than suddenly during the installation I have this strange problem: The device is recognized when inserted in the USB port, when pointed to the INF file it starts copying the sys file than it stales ( I have this folder icon flying showing the sys file being copyed to the diver directory and the operation never finishes ). If I remove the device from the USB port then the operation completes correcly, the Finish pannel comes up and a message that the device was installed correctly but may not work if the suystem is not rebooted comes up. No matter if I reboot or not, the device appear in the COntrol Pannel with its correct name as given in the inf file and no yellow warning, in the properties it says that is associated with the correct binary driver, the driver file is present and OK BUT in the General tab there is a message that this device has no driver installed !!! And of course the device doesn't work at all. If I try to uninstall the driver with the device plugged in the uninstalling also stalles until the device is removed then if is removed it seem to be done OK and if I try reinstalling it happens again as is described above. I'm really lost on what is happening, it looks like some weird permission problem but I'm able to delete the freshly copied file from the drivers directory without any problem while this stalled operation is there and I even disabled system resore. Nothing seem to help and is happening on multiple system in very different configurations, all what they have in common is that are having the latest official updates. I've checked the INF file with checkinf and is ok, no warnings or errors, I've enabled some DbgPrint in the driver, including right on the beginning, they are not called at all when the copying operation stalles, and what is worse in some like 5-10% of the cases the installation rutine succedes and once installed the driver perfoms flawlessly. I'm really getting desperate because I have no other debug optins of I can think of, if somebody encountered this or has some pointers of what to try to pinpoint that problem I'll be most gratefull. I was interested to know how the internals of a utility named FreeOTFE work (http://www.freeotfe.org). The GUI part was written in Delphi and the Drivers etc part was written in C. The source code was given by the developer. I'm trying to find how this utility works with different Operating Systems (to be specific XP and Vista). A file named FreeOTFE.c (under \src\drivers\DRIVER\src) contain some definitions such as driver's entry point , driver's unload function ,Destroy the specified device object ,Handle device control IRPs etc. I've seen that the following condition appear many times in the code: VER_PRODUCTBUILD >= 2600 I understood that the DDK includes a header file named NTVERP.H that defines this constant VER_PRODUCTBUILD. This constant is related to the build numbers of the OS that the DDK is designed for (NT 4.0 1381, Windows 2000 2195 ,Windows XP 2600 and Vista is 6000?), So this condition checks the driver's ability to support the OS that have build number above 2600 (XP and Vista)? What I need to seek in the code to see different behavior for different OS? What parameters/functions are related to the way a driver works with different OS?     - WDF Coinstaller and my coinstaller I've updated an existing WDM driver (for a PCI card) to KMDF 1.5, and everything is working fine, except for one thing: the existing driver also installed a coinstaller (to provide an extra property page). I modified the INF file to add the WDF-related stuff, and now I don't get the property page. It appears to me that WDF is listed as "the" coinstaller in the registry. So, how does one arrange things in the INF to include both the WDF coinstaller and the driver's coinstaller? I didn't want to post the INF (before and/or after converting to KMDF) to reduce the noise level, but I can do that if it will help.     - Vista change in behavior in TDI and Irp->PendingReturned Flag There are two problems I run in to when doing a "disconnect" test using TDI and TCP. I am able to transfer data normally over a TCP connection, but when I have the usermode server close the socket during a transfer, the kernel client behaves strangely in Vista (both 32 and 64) vs XP. After allocating an irp (IoAllocateIrp) and setting up my stack location (completion routine set via TdiBuildSend macro), I call IoCallDriver which after the server has disconnected never returns. It calls into my completion routine with the "PendingReturned" flag which to me seems to say that the OS should have returned the call to IoCallDriver with STATUS_PENDING and queued a work item to handle the request. Instead, the call is synchronous and my completion routine runs. My completion routine will resubmit the irp and start another transfer if the status is successful. In XP the second request (made from the completion routine) return synchronously with PendingReturned flag NOT set with a bad status in the IoStatusBlock member of the irp (STATUS_INVALID_DEVICE_STATE); fine and dandy, my completion routine does not resubmit, the stack unwinds, great! Vista, however, not only handles every call to IoCallDriver synchronously (even though it sends the PendingReturned flag to 1), but every single call returns a good status in the IoStatusBlock member of the irp! The data transfered is 0, but the status is good. What changed? Any ideas what could be going wrong?     - USB debugger I have Windows vista home premium with 64-bit AMD and EHCI USB. Will special USB cable work with this target. I read like you need debugport exposed, BIOS and all that. How do I even know before I buy that USB debugger will work for sure? I dont know about others, but setting up debugger is becoming big headache. PC we buy are not coming with serial ports. Virtual USB serial ports wont help. I am developing firewire driver and dont want to use debugging over firewire 1394. We are using the DTM (Driver Test Manager 1.0.6417.304) to test our
kernel mode device driver (mirror driver) to get a digital signature.

We are using the following configuration:

Controller: Windows 2003 Server
Studio: Windows 2003 Server
Client: Windows Vista Home Basic

We set up the unclassified tests and run them (we don't need a logo,
we only need a signature).

We received 2 errors in the following tests:

- Run INFTest against a single INF (Error message in RunJob: Could not
find user specified INF files)
- Plug and Play Driver Test (3 Error messages in RunJob: DeviceId is
NULL)

Do you have any idea ?
