    - what tools needed to develop IM I have to start developing an Intermediate driver and I need to know exactly what tools I need... through search in this news group, Microsoft site and google I gather that I need the following and I need your feedbacks on it. 1.     - How to NDIS halt when USB device unplugged I'm developing an NDIS driver that connects with an existing WDM/USB driver. The NDIS driver gets a handle to the USB driver. With that handle, the NDIS driver can cause the USB driver to send and receive packets. The problem comes when the USB device is unplugged. I need to be able to cause the NDIS driver to halt and dereference the USB driver handle so the USB driver can unload The NDIS driver is root enumerated and uses the CallBackEx mechanism to be informed about the loading of the USB driver. Via IOCTL, I can inform the NDIS driver that it is time to Halt, but calling MPHalt() will not work. How do I inform the NDIS stack that this adapter is no longer valid? I want to be able to leave the NDIS driver loaded and ready to run when the USB device is plugged back in I've also tried calling NdisMIndicateStatus() and NdisMIndicateStatusComplete() to say NDIS_STATUS_MEDIA_DISCONNECT.     - Driver for a watchdog : how to ? Hello, I'm using a motherboard including an hardware watchdog that I want to be able to control, so that it can restart the server when frozen. To do that, I have to do some In/out to some ports, which is not permitted from Ring3. I then need to have some Ring0 code, which may be a device driver. I've been browsing the DDK, but I can't find anything related to this kind of driver. Could someone tell me which kind of driver is the best appropriated, and tell me if a sample or some basic code is available somewhere ? I've been browsing the samples, but they are mostly based on the fact that the device can be found thru some enumeration, and this driver is purely I/O, not registered on the PCI bus, the USB bus or anything else.     - Question on VLAN ID overflow in MUX sample I am experimenting with the MUX sample from the 2003 ddk. I am trying to use vlan ids that are in the range of 3000-3016. I seem to be able to assign a vlanID in this range but when I monitor the actual network traffic the high order 4 bits seem to be getting stripped. So 3016 becomes 200, 3017 is 201 etc... I check the registry and the vlanID is being persisted with the proper value but isn't making it into the tagged outgoing traffic properly.     - smbus access on a via vt82c686b Hello, I am attempting to create a smbus client driver to communicate with the smbus component of the via vt82c686b. It is my understanding that the smbus.sys smbus class driver will provide the needed lowlevel interface, as defined in the smbus design guide. However I am unable to see any data from a scope plugged into the hardware. Does anyone have experience with either the smbus or interfacing with the vt82c686b?     - OID_802_11_RSSI vs OID_802_11_BSSID_LIST Hello I'm using these two objects "OID_802_11_RSSI" and "OID_802_11_BSSID_LIST" in order to read the received signal strength from my NIC (D-Link AirPlus DWLG650+) When I use the first one (RSSI) I get the signal strength in dBm from the access point that I am connected with. This value is reasonable (-45dBm, -50dBm, -60dBm....). But when I use the second one (BSSID_LIST) I get the macs of each access point in the WiFi area correctly but the value of the received signal strength is impossible (120, 100, 90....). It is said in the OID specifications that the returned value is dBm but it is not possible to receive 120 dBm!!! Reading some previous posts I've found one called "How to convert RSSI (dbm) to Percentage?" where it is said >> There is a table to represent the dBm value of each vendor. Fo >> example >> RSSI = -70dBm is equivalent to RSSI = 20 in "Conversion for Symbol" So I thought about the possibility of any conversion but the relationship between the signal strengh of both parameters is not linear..     - Writing Miniport installtion application?? Hi All , I want to write a setup application to install the base driver for my network card. I tried the devcon sample , it succeeded to detect the device , created registry entries but the device manager shows the icon saying device cannot start. And also the NDC doesnot show the connection. If i install the driver using device manager everything works fine.. What might be the problem.     - Question about USBD Hi, I'm developing a USB client driver and I found that USBD will keep several USB ACK together until a bus driver thread was signaled, and corresponding IRP completion routines will be invoked together.     - FS Filter Driver READ request Hi All, I am writing an upper filter driver. I run hello.exe which displays "Hello World" using only printf statement. In the read completion request of the filter driver I capture all READ requests for hello.exe. But filter driver never gets READ request for the offset range containing "Hello World" string within the hello.exe. And all the data which is read never contains this string. Still I can see output as "Hello World". I can see rest of the hello.exe being read. Is there any specific reason why it happens so? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, rushikesh. IoGetDeviceObjectPointer £¨£©return NTSUCCESS£¬but the pdo return back is different from the DeviceObject of the lower driver. But in win 98, the lower one can't recieve that IRP. why? It seems so strange. in win98, the IoGetDeviceObjectPointer() can return success, and give a pdo to me, but I can't use it.     - USBD DISPATCH_LEVEL Requests Is there any formal (or at least accurate) documentation on which USBD requests require/allow which IRQL? For instance, I know I can invoke URB_FUNCTION_BULK_OR_INTERRUPT_TRANSFER at DISPATCH_LEVEL and I know that URB_FUNCTION_SELECT_CONFIGURATION when called at DISPATCH_LEVEL (executes paged code at line 1025 of usbd\config.c).     - PCI card driver: enumeration and interfaces Hallo, thank you for your help with my previous problems :) I'm developing a driver for a custom PCI card which exposes some resources. We want to hide the number of the cards from user mode, so i wrote another driver which enumerates the real devices and routes the requests to the appropriate device, appearing as one single big card. I've got some problems here: when I try to enumerate the devices, I only get the first device object, and I'm not able to obtain the other(s). I've got two cards installed at the moment, and with Device Three i can see both of them, but when i call IoGetDeviceInterfaces() I only get one entry, and the device object obtained from that entry with IoGetDeviceObjectPointer() has the NextDevice field set to null. How can i get the full list of the devices given the class id or the hwid ? Another thing: the two device types communicate through an interface. The upper device opens the lower device and sends a IRP_MN_QUERY_INTERFACE. in the lower device the request is handled properly, and the Status field is set to STATUS success, but back in the upper device i obtain an error in Status. Before calling IoCallDriver i set the Status field to STATUS_NOT_SUPPORTED and that (or whatever else i put in it) is the value that I get back.     - Legacy Driver - WTF is the card? Hi I have been learning (read oney's and the 2000 book) I can see and scan the PCI buss BUT I just realized the card I have (scrammnet memory card) isnt PNP.     - NonStandard Floppy I want to access a nonstandard formatted floppy ( 256 bytes/sector, 16 sector/track) and the standard floppy driver don't know to read this kind of floppy. In W95 I did that with BOIS int1Eh (floppy drive parameters) and int 13h. How can I do that in NT/2000/XP? ( no BIOS interuptions access...) I begin to look the fdc example and I think that's the way ( modify the driver to know this particular format).     - AVStream avshws DDK example I'm playing around with avshws to learn AVStream. avshws shows up in the "WDM Streaming Capture Devices" category in GraphEdit. I'd like the driver to appear in "Video Capture Sources" as well. I have some ideas as to how this might be done, but I'd like to get a deeper understanding. Any info is appreciated. AMCap only enumerates CLSID_VideoInputDeviceCategory devices, as do most capture apps that I'm aware of. What logic determines which categories a video capture card should belong to?     - NEC dvd driver problem Hope I'm in the right newsgroup! I have just bought a NEC 2500 dvd rw, but have major problems installing it. WindowsXP is recognising the drive but is unable to load the drivers. The balloon message says Found New Hardware _NEC dvd rw 2500a Found New Hardware CD Rom Found New Hardware _NEC dvd rw 2500a Found New Hardware CD Rom and so on and so on. The drive is not fully recognised or usable, and is automatically disabled in the device manager. I can sometimes get XP to recognise the dvd drive by uninstalling and re-installing the dvd drivers and forcing enable and it will work fine for a while. When I re-start XP the balloon message will again pop up and it starts all over again. Then change or delete the folder "MONITOR" Switch to "C:WINDOWS" Ensure that you have in windows explorer settings option activated to see ALL data (also hided and system files) Switch to "c:WINDOWSINF" Look for the "INFCACHE.1" file and delete it Switch to your desktop trash can and empty it If problem cant be solved, pls. contact manufacturer of your PC package.     - Difference between Local Disk aund Removable Disk Hi, I have read Mark Roddy's article on http://www.wd-3.com/121503/luserland.htm. He described as you can get the sector address (LBA) a file on a harddisk. His sample code works for NTFS & FAT32 partions. With a small look in the FAT spec and some adaptations the sample also works for FAT12/16. The sample works on W2K & WXP for harddisks and all disks declared as "Local Disk". For "Removable Disk" like a USB Mass Storage Device this sample (API call DeviceIoControl/IOCTL_VOLUME_LOGICAL_TO_PHYSICAL) does not work and system error 50 (not supported) does occur. The same device declared as "Local Disk" everythink does work. Is there are a workaround to get DeviceIoControl/IOCTL_VOLUME_LOGICAL_TO_PHYSICAL data also on "Removable Disks" or is there are another possibility to get the wanted information on another way?     - unresolved external using standard C lib I feel like an idiot, but this is my first time trying to compile things in the DDK environment. I'm trying to use the C standard runtime function "fopen" in a driver.     - Questions on PCI config space when ressetting a PCI board Hi, I'm developing a wdm driver under Win2K for a proprietary PCI board. Unfortunately, the board's PCI interface logic is part of a FPGA that can only be fully reset by reconfiguring the FPGA. We foresee that we need to reset our board on certain occasions and we do not want to power-cycle our system for this. Therfor, I'm implementing the following reset sequence in my driver: Because the reconfiguration of the FPGA resets the PCI config space, I start with saving this data (after having disabled the boards PCI interface). I then call PoRequestPowerIrp to force the board to go to device state D3. In the IoCompletion routine, PoRequestPowerIrp is called again to force the board to go back to device state D0 (this actually resets our FPGA and the PCI config space). In the IoCompletion routine of the second PoRequestPowerIrp, I restore the PCI config space data and reenable the PCI interface. When, in the above scheme, I use the sequence IoBuildAsynchronousFsdRequest() - IoSetCompletionRoutine() - IoCallDriver() to read or write the PCI configuration space, this completion routine is called with DeviceObject = NULL. I solve this by passing the DeviceObject via the 'context' of the completion routine. Is this normal or could I be doing something wrong here? Apart from the above problem the sequence seems to work, but I am not sure wether I should also save and restore the power management registers of the PCI config space. Or should I leave this to the pci.sys bus driver who does the actual D0/D3/D0 switching ? Also, I'm not sure that the above will work under all circumstances so I would appreciate it if anybody knows where to find some more info on stuff like this. Using the VC6.0 IDE, I added the following to the pscommand method: LARGE_INTEGER time; ULONG seed; // seed value should be a global or in device extension ULONG rand; // random value KeQuerySystemTime(&time); // only do first time or in init code! seed = (ULONG) time; rand = RtlRandom(&seed); // get random number 2.. Everytime I play a game about a minute into it the computer goes to a
quick blue screen (sorta like the BSOD, but it goes so fast i cant
tell)then reboots itself. Some times it resets my monitor settings,
but not always. Windows error report just says device driver error. I
think my video card driver is causing it but not sure (Radeon 9600XT).
Any Help?

Another posible reason is that the card is overheating.
Try checking if the cooler is working and that the card is resonably
cool....and, afcorse, getting the last drivers is always a good idea.
