    - Disappearing Symbolic link and device Objects I have driver pair X and Y. Both are installed as a Demand Start sevices by a console app. Upon load, Driver X creates a link \\??\\Driver_X for user mode access and loads driver Y (using ZwLoadDriver). The symbolic link creted by drive X ( \\??\\Driver_X ) mysteriously disappears if I unload driver Y using the console app ( it calls service control manager StopService). The user mode apps fails to open X, obviously becuase it couldnt see the link. I verified the disappearence of the link with the sysinternals winobj. But I see the existance of the link with Osr's objdir!!! Is there any explnation why this happens? I am sure that neither the Device object nor symbolic link created by Driver X are explicitly deleted by Driver X( X never calls IoDeleteDevice or IoDeleteSymbolicLink in this case). This doesnt happen if I load X ( which in trun loads Y). Reboot the machine then try unload X using the same console app. I am running Windows 2000.     - sources/Build.exe alternate source file location question Is it possible to specify a source file that is in a different folder than the current one or the parent folder? It seems that when I specifiy "SOURCES=foo.c", Build.exe looks in the directory above and then the current directory. I tryed to figure out what it has to do with the plotui sample of the DDK... but this sample is far away from being simple.     - ReadFile problem I'm writing a printer driver and I need to ask the printer for its status. I sent a command to the printer through WriteFile and it worked fine (using serial communication).     - Urgent : Reloading settings for NDIS driver Hello Now, I'm getting desperate. I need to reload the settings for the NDIS driver on Windows 2000 / XP. I use it for using the USB as a NIC and I have to setup the IP address from a service. Unfortunately, these settings are only read when starting the NDIS driver and I need a way to reload these settings/loading the NDIS driver on Window 2000 / XP other than pulling the cable out and reinserting it.     - Interdriver communication page fault hi, i am a novice at drivers and need some help .. some days back i posted a query regarding mechanisms for interdriver communication among drivers not on the same stack. One of the mechanisms told was to build an IRP using IoBuildDeviceIoControlRequest() and send using the IoCallDriver() method. I allocated the buffers and built an IRP using the IRP_MJ_INTERNAL_DEVICE_CONTROL ioctl and sent it via IoCallDriver. I did it in the Passthru IM driver's MPSend() function. The idea is to route the incomming and outgoing packets' data to the TargetDriver for processing. I put the breakpoint on the SourceDriver's function in SoftICe. Now this scheme works fine once or twice when the function is called but after that there is a PAGE FAULT and everyting crashes. I thought i could get some advice on this forum regarding this.     - Unidriver Plug-in Hi I have added a tab in document properties by Unidriver plug-in and in that tab I have got 2 list boxes for font substitution I have hidden fontsustitution controls from standard Advance dialog by setting flag OPTIF_HIDE To populate list boxes on my tab I have done it from OptItems. My listboxes are getting populated correctly and are retriving settengs correctly depending upon the (pOptItems + index)->Se But my problems is when I set it does not save the value I change the pOptitems + index->Sel , Modify the flags with OPTIF_CHANGED and then call DrvUpdateUISetting() for that optItem This method works fine with all other features like copies, orienation, Tray etc but not only for fontsbustitution tabe . But under win98 and winme, the WH_KEYBOARD_LL doesn't support, I can only use WH_KEYBOARD, it does not work.     - Buffered or Direct I am writing a driver that will need to receive a pointer to a physical address to be used for DMA from another device (not the one controlled by my driver). I have control over the interface between the two devices. I wish to pass a small structure to the "other" device in the output buffer of an IOCTL call. One fo the fields in this structure will be used to pass a physical address. My first assumption is that physical (or "logical") addresses are safe to pass from one device to another. Should I pass the aforementioned structure to the second device using direct or bufferd IO? Also, how does a video miniport differ from the more general miniports? What I'm seeing is ... that the video miniport never exits.     - filter above serial waits for special char hello everyone, have installed an upper filter above serial and want to let it listen fo= r = a special character. this char will be send from a device to the com-port, where my filter is= = attached on. in detail: from an usermode app. a deviceIoControl - request is send to my filter.= the dispatch-routine for this ioctl-request sends a char to the com-port= = via self-made irp (IoBuildAsynchronousFsdRequest, IoSetCompletionRoutine= , = IoCallDriver)... that works fine so far. but, after that i need to listen for an answer from the connected device= , = which is a special character. after this char is identified, a next writ= e = with some buffer content has to start immediately. my first idea was to set up a workerthread right after the write, which = = sends a synchronous read request down to serial and waits. then, the = thread validates the content of the readbuffer and initiates the next = write-op. my question is, is this a realistic method?     - VfW capture driver DLL doubts Hi, I am writing a VfW capture driver DLL(user-mode). But I am facing some problems in giving the data back to the client from the driver. I am using client as WME. I have followed the steps given in the NT4.0 DDK also the sample. The driver loading, opening, closing, adding buffer's are happening properly. The client is adding a new buffer after filling and giving old buffer(which it has given before) back to the client by doing a callback from the DLL. I am setting the dwFlag header as lpVideoHdr->dwFlags |= VHDR_DONE; Actually the driver should convert the H.261 data to uncompressed video samples. But in order to ensure that driver is giving data properly to the client, I want to give some static image. I am filling the lpData member like the following. memset(lpVideoHdr->lpData, (UCHAR)255, lpVideoHdr->dwBufferLength); lpVideoHdr->dwBytesUsed = lpVideoHdr->dwBufferLength; And by using DriverCallback function I am giving the buffer to client. But client is displaying the data as "black" always. When I click encoding it is creating a new file but without any data. I am very much new to video programming. I am doing something wrong. Please anybody can advice/help to correct me. I have only done audio related applications which all are standard exe's. Also is there anyway, I can use DirectX / VCM functions to convert H.261 video data to RGB/YUV format? or Do I have to go for some open source code?     - Problem with Microsoft Bluetooth and socket accept Hi all I have successfully developed an application with the MS API. Now I want to develop a server app so I´ve basically used a complete test project found at http://www.lenholgate.com/archives/000206.html. My problem is that the application hangs on accept. I try to connect to the server from an authenticated device (Sony Ericsson Phone) and the Phone finds the computer but no services (there should be an obex service) and it is not possible to connect. I have tried both the MS and TDK dongles and both work fine from within Windows and with socket connect but not with this accept approach.     - Common Buffer based Bus Master DMA. Hi I am working on a WMD driver for a device that supports BUS master DMA but not scatter gather. I am trying to use a common buffer for DMA transfer. I am using a buffer of about 250 Kbyte, and never seem to have problems allocating it. I'm a bit concerned about map registers. The DDK docs say: "The requested size for the buffer, shown in Figure 3.12 as LengthForBuffer, determines how many map registers must be used to provide a virtual-to-logical mapping for the common buffer. At most, the number of map registers can be the value of (BYTES_TO_PAGES (LengthForBuffer)). This value cannot be greater than the NumberOfMapRegisters returned by IoGetDmaAdapter. For more information about system-supplied macros, such as BYTES_TO_PAGES, that drivers can use, see the Kernel-Mode Driver Reference." On my machine IoGetDmaAdapter returns 2. Does this mean that I can only transfer up to 2 pages of memory at one go (ie 2*4K on my machine). Unfortunately neither the DDK or the Walter Oney book seem to cover this topic well. At the moment I just ignore the number of map registers and assume it will be OK. Half way through the PCI board transferring data from its self to the PCI address returned by AllocateCommonBuffer it bug checks. Is this likely to be because it ran out of MapRegisters? If so how can I go about transferring larger amounts of data under the control of the PCI card (or the DSP on it). I currently have a synchronisation scheme between the PC and the DSP using PIO (which sets up and controls the DMA) and I do not want to have to change this (ie I don't want to use Packet based transfer). If it comes to It I would rather send multiple buffer locations to the DSP using PIO and program the DSP to do a "scatter gather type operation". Thanks Tag: USB Device Tag: 45712

    - modem.sys and device path exerciser We've got a problem with our modem stack running under device path exerciser from HCT suite, under XP. Occasionally, IRPs get stuck in MODEM.SYS queue. Those IRPs are originated from DeviceIoControl, code 0x002B0018, which is some private MODEM.SYS IOCTL. Modem.sys converts those to IRP_MJ_READ or IRP_MJ_WRITE and sends further to the lower driver. Our driver (acfva) is a filter which sits below modem.sys. The device path exerciser may bombard modem.sys with series of similar IRPs (for example those with 2B0018 (?) IOCTL code). If two such IRPs are sent by the exerciser and completed before CompletionDpc has a chance to run, the first IRP is lost, and I believe this is why the IRP gets stuck. It is absolutely bad idea to queue a per-driver DPC with an IRP argument, without making sure those IRPs are serialized.     - im filter and ipsec I have an IM network driver that works dandy for most scenarios. When a Cisco IPSec VPN is installed, we have some issues - basically the PSched/DNE drivers pick off the traffic before we see them. On XP, I was able to install using the FilterClass of "Scheduler" in the inf file, and that installs us above the ipsec drivers. That has been working reasonably so far. But on 2K this doesn't work - no matter what I do, the DNE driver always gets installed above us and pick off (and encrypts) the traffic before we can look at it. Any suggestions?     - deferred driver updates I have three 1394 devices with same vendorId and model. So hardwareId is same and same device driver is used for all devices. When I connect more than one device and through device manager I update the 1394 driver. **The installation doesnot give any error**. Everything works fine but it was old driver and not new driver. But the new driver is updated only after reboot or if all the devices are removed and reconnected to PC. If I update the driver with only one device connected, new driver is updated immediately. What can I do to update the driver file even if more than one device is connected. (All devices use same INF file and same driver files). I manually updated all devices(enumerated in device manager and through properties-->driver update), but still old driver is used till I remove the cables or restart the PC. What problems could arise because of this ??? 1- Will that "user-mode driver" have performance problems? 2- When the system is in low memory conditions will it have problems? 2.1 - I'm supposing this application will require less than 1Kbyte in memory for some controls variables and the COM1 file handle, I'm planning use VirtualAlloc and VirtualLock to keep it in physical memory, Does it solve the problems? 3- And what about when the system is running in low CPU contions? 4- I also have to do a USB version. All of the questions above are the same for USB? 5- I'm planing use Plug-Play and Power management functionalities. Can it be well-done using "RegisterDeviceNotification" and related funcions?     - Disabling keyboard initialization routine on Windows boot? Hi all, I'm very new to driver development and have recently been assigned a project so that my team would be able to send keystrokes via an external host machine and a custom PS/2 connector. However the issue I run into is that upon boot, the OS will disable the keyboard drivers and not load them. I thought the solution might be to disable the initialization routine in the keyboard driver source code that comes with WindowsDDK. I've had no success is achieving this and have come to a wall. I've been modifying kbddep.c in the pnpi8042 folder which seems to define the hardware dependencies for the keyboard.     - Creating a REAL Sidewinder Force FeedBack Pro (Gameport) Driver Hi! I was playing lately with my SW FFB joystick on XP. Everything worked well except that there was no force feedback at all! I've looked a little bit on those SW XP drivers and found that there is and there will be no support for force feedback on XP for SW gameport joystick, but only for USB version. Since trying to connect gameport joystick on a USB port is non-sense, I'm thinking of adding force feedback to current driver. I know that force feedback "messages" are sent thru Midi events (I have to figure out how exactly). So, the only thing we need is to create a filter driver between current SW drivers and directX. This driver (could be a user driver only and not a kernel driver) will only send FFB events from directX to Midi port, and sw_effct.dll may give some infos (I'll also have to look in it).
