For debugging driver on a target machine, can I use eithernet instead of a
null-modem cable connecting the 2 machines?

No, you can use serial or 1394 and on Vista USB,.

Nope normal 1394 since 1394 is multi-initiator. 1394 debugging can be
sensitive to the controller chip.
