    - Upper filter driver - attaching to devices I'm using IoAttachDevice. It returns OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND. I'm using the same device name as shown by irptracker and devicetree utilities. Any ideas?     - BDA driver and MS Windows MCE Hello, I have a problem with developing BDA driver for MS MCE. First thing I did was to compile a BDA sample from MS DDK. This sample works in MS XP perfectly, but when I try to use this BDA driver in MCE it doesn't work I'm trying to run Media Center in MCE and this application can't find this BDA sample driver to receive TV.     - .INF setup fails using syssetup.dll, setupapi.dll, OK with Hardware Hi: Where is some documentation on the differences between the parsing of .inf files between the Hardware Update Wizard and installing .inf files using either syssetup.dll or setupapi.dll? The .inf file in question installs successfully (manually) with the Hardware Update Wizard, but fails with either of the dll methods. This happens to be the onboard NIC driver, so for an unattended install it's rather important to get this installed first, since there's no default Windows XP driver for the network. (It also does not install from the right-click context menu, but that is known since this is a pnp driver, not a service install) There is no [defaultinstall] section in the .inf file, and it has been extracted from a larger integrated setup.exe for nVidia motherboard drivers. I've hooked the .dll lines into the relevant part of the .inf for the specific hardware I'm using, and it runs from there. But then there is the error #E047: Setting registry/key value: no root specified followed by #E065 and #D064 errors that seem to cascade from the #E047 error. I can use devcon for this as a last resort, but I'd rather identify the reason for the discrepancy in parsing the .inf file first. It seems the recommended method is to store the data in the WDFFILEOBJECT's device context. However, when new data arrives from my device, the driver needs to examine and potentially update each integer that is unique to each file handle. Therefore, I need some way to enumerate all open WDFFILEOBJECTS. Is this possible? If not, my alternative would be to store a hash map or linked list containing all of the WDFFILEOBJECT handles and their corresponding integers. This map/list would be stored in the device context of my Device Object and updated in EvtDeviceFileCreate and EvtFileCleanup callbacks. Are there some built in data structures for hash maps or linked lists that would be helpful for implementing this? I'd prefer the first approach (enumerating the WDFFILEOBJECTs) so that I can let the framework manage the map between file objects and integer data. Any other solutions are welcomed.     - My AVStream driver can't show video with YUY2 format in AMCAP Dear All, I use avshws sample to write the video capture driver for my PCI video capture card. I can show YUY2 video with graphedit. But when I use AMCAP or AMCAP2, the video will show up first time when the AMCAP is executed. But if I open the Video Capture Pin property and choose the same YUY2 320x240 mode, the AMCAP window just show black display. However, if I drag the AMCAP window to outside of the desktop area or overlap by another window, the AMCAP will update one or two frames. If I drag the AMCAP window and move continuously, the video frames will update continuously. It's quite strange. I have no idea what it related in my code.     - Video properties cannot be set in Vista I wrote a video capture driver for our company's usb webcam device in Windows 2000 many years ago. In Windows XP, the video capture driver still works, however, in Vista 32 bit, video properties cannot be set in amcap, skype, or Yahoo! messenger. The property settings(capture filter) box does not pop out in these applications, not to mention chaning the properties. MSN Live messenger works as previous, and I can change brightness, contrast or white balance for our webcam. The default usbvideo.sys driver from Microsoft is tested against our webcam for cross-validation, and it does not have problem mentioned above. Therefore I know it's our driver's problem. I think the possibilites of the causes includes: 1. There are some "hidden" SRBs in Vista that our webcam driver does not handle. 2. MS secretly change the GUID of PROPSETID_VIDCAP_VIDEOPROCAMP in Vista, thus applications does not know our webcam supports video property settings. 3. Our driver does not follow new AVStream architecture and DirectShow does not support it. (I hope not, or I have to rewrite our driver) However, all of these cannot explain why MSN Live messenger still works. I wonder what is the true cause of this problem?     - RDP and HID devices Hi, I'm working on supporting an ePad USB (electronic signature device) device from Interlink Electronics on WinXP pro and Win 2003 server platforms. There is a software given along with the device for testing. This USB device belongs to HID class (deviceclass - 0x03, deviceSubclass - 0x01, deviceProtocol - 0x02). When I plugin the device to a standalone pc and open the application, everything works fine. Now if I do an RDP to this system and try to use the same application over RDP- 1) On XP pro systems, it successfully opens a handle. However HID data is not shown by the application 2) On Win2003 server machines, the same application works fine!! Is there any known problem with HID devices when I do an RDP on XP clients? I have set a completion routine for this IRP, which should be called in all the cases. The lower driver returns a STATUS_PENDING, but it never calls the completion routine, which means, it is unable to complete the IRP. We would like to get an estimate of the number of SG elements needed for a NetBuffer before we call NdisMAllocateNetBufferSGList from the MiniportSendNetBufferList handler. We want to know if we have adequate space on out tx descriptor ring, and (if not) we'd place the NBL on a pending tx list. I suppose we could just as easily walk the mdl's chained to a NB (starting from NB->CurrentMdl) to guess-timate the SG elements that would be returned through NdisMAllocateNetBufferSGList, but we aren't sure that the number of SG elements would always be <= the number of chained mdl's. Maybe all the data is cached? and if so, how to cause it not to be cached ? or do I need to filter the cached manager or something ? 2.     - WPP-like API in User Mode ETW ? OK, so I understand that: * ETW is Event Tracing for Windows (technology). * WPP is the PreProcessor (a tool used with this technology). There is an excellent sample demonstrating the use of WPP (toaster.c). It helped me implement WPP in my driver so that I can now view trace messages in TraceView. I would like to do the same in my user mode application. I found the documentation and sample (TraceDp.c) for ETW in the Platform SDK. I figured out how to RegisterTraceGuids() and implement the ControlCallback(). I could even see how to use: TraceEvent(LoggerHandle, (PEVENT_TRACE_HEADER) &UserEvent); But... I don't like this TraceEvent API. I very much prefer the WPP API which provide an "intuitive" interface like: ToasterDebugPrint(ERROR, "function failed (%x)\n", status); However, I couldn't find anywhere a sample or documentation that could help me take a shortcut from TraceEvent() to MyDebugPrint(). So I am wondering: is there a WPP-like API/interface for user-mode applications? If so, where do I find it? If not, how do I get from TraceEvent() to MyDebugPrint() so that it can be displaed using TraceView? If I understand correctly, in order for ETW trace events to be displayed in TraceView, I need to "publish" my "Event Schema". I'm really new about device driver and trying to be intermediate between the WinSock and NIC to grab packets and manipulate them. So I come to decide to work on Windows Server 2003 DDK and build the PassThru sample inserting my DBGPRINT at the begining of PtReceive() function to see the size of each packets for test. And I installed the .sys file according to the PassThru help(PassThru.htm) using .INF file. After that, I use DebugView.exe which is able to show the debug messages and I find some message is shown during my installation the driver. Hello, Somebody believes NTFS works as follows: When NTFS needs to write new data to the disk it finds the clusters which have been least used. This would ensure longer disk life. If NTFS simply re-used the same clusters over and over and over again this would lead to early drive failure (???). Is there any thruth in this or is this internet/usenet myth ? Me wonders... (It does so via a list of clusters somebody said.) It appears (used DriverView utility) it is already loaded but the sound device it represents does not appear in Control Panel | Sound and Audio Devices | Audio & Voice tabs. This is a high speed, full bandwidth, ISO IN endpoint. The driver uses 10 URBs each with 8 3072 byte "packets" (in the microsoft URB sense) for a total of 80 microframes worth of data. What I am seeing is drops of individual 1024 byte packets (in the USB sense) every so often. If I look at the stream on an Ellisys USB200 bus analyzer, I see that the host does not send an IN token for that particular transaction. The log looks like this: SOF -> IN Token <---- DATA2 (1024 bytes) -> IN Token <---- DATA1 (1024 bytes) -> IN Token <---- DATA0 (1024 bytes) SOF -> IN Token <---- DATA2 (1024 bytes) -> IN Token <---- DATA1 (1024 bytes) SOF -> IN Token <---- DATA2 (1024 bytes) -> IN Token <---- DATA1 (1024 bytes) -> IN Token <---- DATA0 (1024 bytes) The packets in question fail with USBD_STATUS_ISO_NOT_ACCESSED_BY_HW. Sometimes there is a second completely empty SOF after the frame with the single missing transaction. So this sounds like a host problem right? Like not scheduling the URBs far enough in advance. I have put debug messages in my URB scheduling and completion routines and have verified that the 10 URBs are cycling correctly and that indeed the URBs containing the failed transactions have been sitting in the host controller driver for 80 microframes. Furthermore, I would expect that an error caused by failure to posting a URB far enough in advance would result in the entire URB getting missed. Thus I would expect to see 8 3072 byte transfers to fail, not a single 1024 byte transaction. Seems as if the HC has seen enough of the URB to fill 7 transfers and 2 transactions of the 8th transfer, it should be able to fill the 3rd transfer. So this makes me think it is a device problem. Perhaps the transaction before the one that fails is in error somehow. But the bus analyzer is not showing any transaction errors at all. Of course it is possible that the bus analyzer is not looking for the timing error in question (should one exist). Or perhaps it is more robust than the host controller in some way. This _is_ host specific in degree. On one host I see this every few seconds across XP SP1, XP SP2 and three difference host controllers (two different vias and a nec). On another with a ICH based controller we are getting SURPRISE_REMOVAL messages (I have not been able to get a bus analyzer on that machine but I suspect it is related). On others, it happens very rarely, like every 10 minutes or so. It does not appear to be CPU load based as different machines with similar CPU loads display different behavior. Has anyone seen such a thing or have a plausible explanation for what is going on? My only guess now is some inter-packet timing error that is sending the HC into an error state, or some interference on the host computer is blocking out the HC driver (although I would think that at this low level everything was done in hardware on the HC).     - CreateFile failing with ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED on WDF Driver used in We are developing an LSP to add a custom stack to an embedded XP system. The custom stack runs as a KMDF driver with an ioctl interface. We open the device driver to our custom stack with a CreateFile() call whenever WSPSocket() is performed. CreateFile() is failing with an ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED when the process executing svchost.exe tries to open up TCP port 135 (MS-RPC?). CreateFile() is also failing with the same error when the process executing svchost.exe tries to open up UDP port 1900 (UPnP?). We do not see any errors on any of the other svchost.exe procceses when they open up sockets, for example, everything works fine for UDP port 123 (NTP?), and we do not have any problems with any of our applications. We initially thought that this could be a security issue, so I tried opening up permission with WdfDeviceInitAssignSDDLString. In fact I opened up the security descriptor to grant read/write for "everything", but still no luck.     - STORPORT - dynamic vs basic volumes Hi, I see the following difference in behavior of my STORPORT miniport device. If I treat the device as basic disk and create partitions, then on a reboot everything comes up ok. However, if I configure it as dynamic disk and create a dynamic volume, that volume comes up as missing after the machine is rebooted. An error message is also captured in system event log, from "ddmon" service, saying volume is not available. The volume is marked as Failed in Disk Manager control panel; right-clicking and selecting Re-activate brings it back to life, with the data intact. Any ideas?     - Regarding digital signing by MS - Our own USB device Hi, It would be of great help if any one could answer my query. We plan to have our Driver set(Here "Driver set" by me means 1. Usbser.sys -windows provided 2. URSerialUSB.INF - I generated/created it to fit our USB device functionality) digitally signed by MS so as to support VISTA. Regarding this I have a doubt: - Is there anything like the 'Device Class' which we mentioned in an .INF file, should be matching the same as that of the feild supplied by USB Device descriptor to get an digital certification ? To be in specific, My USB Device shows baseclass as CDC -0x02; But I used 'Modem' as the Class to mention in .INF; JFYI* : CDC is a composite device class and MODEM is one of its subclass. Also ACM/Ports etc..are subclasses for CDC. To consolidate my question : Will it be a issue to get digital certification from MS to support Vista when the USB device's class is different to that of the one which we specify in .INF file.     - WPP (TraceView etc.) in User Mode Application - Possible? Placing and using WPP Software Tracing in WDM drivers is easy, mainly because the WDK documentation is remarkablely detailed and clear. From reading the WDK documentation, I understand that a Trace Provider can be a user mode application too, not necesarily a driver. I would like to use WPP to analyze an application that was built using Visual C++ 2005. How do I do that? Where do I find information about this? Hi All,

I'm supporting IPV6 checksum offload on Windows 2003 server. Though I
return IPV6 capabilities in the MiniportQueryInformation, still NDIS does
not seem to enable the IPV6 checksum offloads in the MiniportSetInformation
call. Is there some registry parameter etc required to be set explicitly to
enable IPV6 offload capabilities on Windows 2003 ?
