    - How to install a virtual Smart Card driver ? Hi, I'm trying to install a smart card reader driver. You can call that a virtual driver because its not directly accessing the hardware, rather it uses an Ndis miniport export functions to read/write/isr to hardware. Hence this works only if Ndis miniport is preset. The problem i'm facing is how to install both Ndis miniport and SC reader on the same hardware with the same vendor id and device id. I have tested these drivers, independently on the same hardware and even together with the help of a third party NIC, replacing with my Ndis miniport driver. Now when i plug in the card, the machine detects a new hardware and i install the Ndis miniport on it. Now i'm trying to forcefully install the smart card driver using 'Add hardware' wizard. But here when i click on 'Install from the list of hardware i select', it does not show Smart card at all though its an existing class in XP. So if i try browsing through and selecting my own inf, i get the error msg , 'The specified location does not contain does not contain information about your hardware'.     - DDK 6000 Problem I've installed the 6000 DDK on two different machines now. Out of historical habit, I have all of my DDKs installed into \DDK instead of \WinDDK.     - inf file? I want to install the diskperf.sys sample for a volume instead of the entire disk. Can someone help me to modify the relevant sections of the inf file. The volume will have a GUID number which, I am guessing, can be found in the STORAGE key, hopefully they are arranged in increasing drive letters, otherwise I will have to try them one by one, but just assume I have the GUID.     - Necessary to pend IRP_MN_QUERY_CAPABILITIES? IRP_MN_QUERY_CAPABILITIES is documented as being sent in an "arbitrary thread context", and I thought the rule was never to block in an arbitrary thread context, but the DDK toaster bus sample looks like it does a KeWaitForSingleObject in its handler for the IRP.     - PCI set resources - not same device0 Hello folks - I am having trouble re-installing my device driver for a PCI Express (PCIe) device. Everything works fine the first time the driver loads and the device gets started. I then Uninstall the driver (through Device Manager), and the Remove Device PnP event seems to be processed fine as well. It is on the subsequent Start Device PnP event that I seem to have trouble. When my driver calls IoCallDriver() to pass IRP_MN_START_DEVICE down to the bus driver, I see the returned status be: 0xC00000C0 (STATUS_DEVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST). When I run this with the Server 2003 checked build, I see busdrv\pci\enum.c (line 4114) print: "Assertion Failed: PCI set resources - not same device0". Can anyone give me some more details on this error? Any idea of how I can get some more information from the bus driver as to why the device is not the same?     - Help: installing WDK 5840 sample minispy Hi, I install WDK 5840 and built the sample minispy. I copied the sys, exe and inf file to a directory and right-clicked the inf. I saw a flash of a dialog and then nothing. When I try to run minispy.exe, the following error occured: Connecting to filter's port... Could not connect to filter: 0x80070002 The system cannot find the file specified.     - Driver installation best practices Does DIFxApp allow creating one msi file that automatically installs the appropriate driver meaning the one msi file contains both 32-bit and 64-bit driver packages? Or is DIFx hard coded to the model where you distribute a bunch of installers that the end user in turn has to choose from manually?     - SetupDiOpenDeviceInterface Hello, After retrieving the Device Instance ID of a device, I am attempting to enumerate the device interfaces the device has available. I am attempting to do this by using SetupDiOpenDeviceInterface with the instance ID and then using SetupDiEnumDeviceInterfaces. However, SetupDiEnumDeviceInterfaces returns that there are no device interfaces. If I use SetupDiGetClassDevs to create a populated device info list and then enumerate the members until I find one with the correct device instance ID I can enumerate the device interfaces on that member. But this does not seem optimal as I have the device instance already, and can create an entry in my device info list with SetupDiOpenDeviceInterface.     - Incorrect IPv6 link local address assigned to adapter I'm working on an NDIS driver for a multi-adapter/port NIC. Things have been working with the Windows network stack for IP, but problems start appearing when IPv6 is installed/configured. The first thing that I noticed was that the link-local IPv6 addresses are incorrect for the adapters. Windows sets the address for each adapter to be fe80::5445:5245:444f, the same address that is assigned to the Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface. The MAC address for the adapter shows up correctly, but Windows is not generating the link-local address from this.     - Open shared file using IoCreateFile I have been looking for information on the methods of accessing remote files over the network in the kernel code. While tracking IoCreateFile calls I noticed that the parameter passed to the IoCreateFile call gets the mount path name of the remote share and is able to open the file normally. Example \\servername\sharename is mounted on z:\ and I am trying to open z:\foldername\filename.extension and is opened through IoCreateFile call. However, when I tried to do the same it fails. After careful scrutiny I found that the difference between the two is the SecurityQualityOfService variable of object_attributes parameter. I tried to look up the information that would allow me to open â??z:\foldername\filename.extensionâ?? correctly in kernel but have not succeeded yet.     - USB2.0 and Still image device I have the PIMA 15740:2000 document that describes the PTP Protocol for digital still devices. This document also contains the USB 1.1 implementation of PIMA15740. This is the most recent document I find on this subject. I also have the ISO 15740:2005 document but this does NOT contain the USB implementation. Question 1: In the PIMA document specifies USB 1.1 and for that the Maximum Packet Size in the Data-In and Data-Out descriptors only specify 64 bytes. Is there an update for this document with respect to USB 2.0? Where to get it, I really don't find it.     - HCT testing for USB device Hi All, Could anybody comment on this? Scenario: We want to do stress tesing of a target USB device using HCT (Hardware Compatibility Test). This device works as a network device over its USB connection (Remote NDIS over USB).The device is working fine in normal conditions. We connected the device to WINXP PC with HCT 12.1 running in it. Driver category selected is Universal and the driver selected for testing is USB8023.sys. Problem: In HCT testing "USB Address Description", "USB Device Control Requests", and "USB Enumeration Stress tests" are failed. Only the "USB Descriptor" test is passed. In the failed tests, it is said "Data received from request does not match previous data" for a Device Descriptor query. But from USB analyzer, it is seen that all descriptors are trasnffered correctly. Errata 1519 on HCT: (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwtest/search/details.aspx?Type=err&ID=1519) Microsoft says "Universal serial bus (USB) devices require a hub upstream from the device in order to pass these tests. USB devices that are embedded in mobile or desktop systems, including USB ExpressCard devices, that do not have a hub upstream of the device cannot be tested in the test environment and configuration stated in the HCT documentation.     - NLB WMI programming I have a C++ COM app that is trying to manage NLB using WMI. I am using "MicrosoftNLB_" classes for this. I could bind the NLB to NIC and also could modify the cluster setting. Now i am trying to add/rem port rules to an NLB cluster. None of the "MicrosoftNLB_" classes have methods to add/rem port rules. The only thing that I found in the DDK is: To install a print processor, an installation application must call the spooler's AddPrintProcessor function, which is described in the Platform SDK documentation.     - PsxxxxxxxxNotifyRoutine and Windows Vista build 5840 Hi, I use DDK routines PsSetCreateProcessNotifyRoutine, PsCreate/RemoveThreadNotifyRoutine etc in my driver. I first register the notification routines and later remove notification routines in the driver. They used to work fine in Windows XP, Server 2003 and until Vista RC2. With the new build 5840, when the driver tries to remove the notification routine, the function never returns and the driver hangs. This doesn't happen always, but happens very frequently. I use Windows server 2003 sp ddk 3790.1830 to build the driver. Is there any change in implementation of these routines in latest Windows Vista?     - Network connection Hello, I have written a driver for a proprietary network card (which is not a standard NIC card). This is a monolithic driver and it neither does register itself as a NDIS driver nor does it communicate with NDIS stack. Now, the question is this ? What should I do to display my network adapter in 'Network Connections' (in the control panel) ? Should it necessarily be registered as a NDIS driver or is there any other solution for this ?     - SCSI Miniport HwScsiStartIo While reading about StorPort, I found this: In the SCSI Port-miniport driver I/O model, the miniport driver's StartIo routine, HwScsiStartIo, should transmit SCSI request blocks (SRBs) to the hardware as quickly as possible. This is essential, because work done in the miniport driver's StartIo routine is accomplished while interrupts are disabled and at IRQL = DISPATCH_LEVEL.     - Installing signed drivers on Vista I'm trying to install signed drivers on Vista (RC2). I'm using InstallShield 12, but I can't get the DIFxApp (2.01), provided by the Device Wizard in InstallShield or the merge module with DIFx tools, to cleanly install my drivers. In the install log I always get the following error: DIFXAPP: ERROR: DriverPackageGetPath is not yet supported for PnP drivers on LH. This only causes my installation to fail if I attempt to remove the Connect Device to Computer dialog (bit flag = 2).     - handles owned by a process hi there, I tried to make an aplication that monitors the handle of a process. I used ZwQuerySystemInformation with the SytemHandleInformation class, this returns a vector of Objects in the system associated with a process ID of the process that holds the object. I managed to get the object types easily, object names as well. I just had an issue, how do I get the handles associated with each object(for example u have the object for the current process PEPROCESS cProcess, and you can call ObOpebObjectByPointer() and make a lot of handles associated with that object with different security and different access masks ). I managed to get object handle count, for each object. Or how can I get the handle_table associated with a process, I know there is a function called ObReferenceProcessHandleTable but it is not documented and I cannot import it from ntoskrnl.exe. or NTKERNELAPI PHANDLE_TABLE ExCreateHandleTable ( __in_opt struct _EPROCESS *Process ); but the same problem not documented, nowhere to get it from.     - How to notify user mode applications from kernel mode drivers Hi, I am trying to create a file system driver with support for live notifications. That is, when ever an application changes any portion of the data in an open file, all other processes that has opened the same file should get notified about the changes. (Similar to directory change notifications, but at a more granular level of files.) It seems all that i need to do is raise a notification in the IOWrite event of my driver. But I could not get how the kernel driver can inform the user mode applications about the changes. Should I have a user mode function that regularily polls the kernel driver for the changes? Or is there any way the user mode applications can "register" for some callback and the kernel driver can invoke the callbacks right from the IOWrite call ? Which way is good/easy to implement?     - How to register a custom parse method of my device object ? Hi, I am trying to modify the RamDisk.sys KMDF sample to provide some custom path features for the files. (For example, I should be able to address the second character in the "Hello.txt" file on the RamDisk when I speciffy Z:\Hello.txt\2) I came to know that Object manager takes care of parsing the paths and dispatching the portions to associated devices. But I am not sure how I receive this in my RamDisk code. It seems Object manager would parse upto "z:\" and then would pass the "hello.txt\2" to my RamDisk driver for parsing. Is that right?     - When does IRP cancel routines get called? Will not EvtDeviceReleaseHardware() get called if one of the IRPs is not completed? Hi, When I disable my driver, my event callback routines registered with KMDF get invoked. The driver receives IRP_MN_QUERY_REMOVE and once the callback routine processes this IRP and returns (is completed), the cancel routine that my driver registered for IRPs that were received by driver earlier get called for a no. of times. Question: 1. Who calls this cancel routine? Is it some application shipped along with my driver package or the PnP/IO manager takes care of calling cancellation routines for all my IRPs that my driver had not completed earlier? Does PnP/IO manager know that my driver is getting disabled(removed) and hence invokes cancel routines for all the IRPs that was not completed earlier by the driver? Does OS keep track of all these IRPs not completed? Or is the framework? 2. Once these cancel routines are executed, I dont see EvtDeviceReleaseHardware() getting executed. Is my driver EvtDeviceReleaseHardware() not getting executed because the driver did not complete all the IRPs when the cancel routine got called? Is this the reason why disable of driver did not go through throwing out a message: "Hardware settings have changed. System needs to be restarted".     - signability.exe - supress the warning file? Is there a way of stopping signability from opening the results file after successfully running? Ideally it would suppress the results file even when warnings are found, but not when errors are found. I have added signability to an automated build procedure, which checks the inf files for all our products with drivers (about 70 inf files). Each time it runs, it opens a notepad to tell me that the inf file passed with warnings (file ... is not represented by a signed cat file - I haven't signed them yet).     - RamDisk depends on FastFat ?? I am working on the RamDisk sample from the latest WDK (KMDF). I was trying to create a file in the ram drive and see the flow of functions therein. I was expecting RamDisk sample to parse the file path and take care of the file creating etc.. However, in reality it turns out that another driver (FastFat.sys) is taking control of the file creation and etc.. functionality, and RamDisk is receiving the calls in asynchronous mode after the FastFat. How is this connection established? I see no code dependency in RamDisk for FastFat. Does this mean all FAT drivers eventaully depend on FastFat.Sys driver?? Or is FastFat.sys a filter driver??     - A question regarding MTU: how it can effect TCP performance + other queries Hello all, I have created a VPN application, which installs a Virtual NIC (an NDIS miniport driver) in the system. Thus when you connects with the VPN then a virtual NIC appears in the system and all the IP packets (for the VPN network) are then transferred to the Virtual NIC. From my virtual NIC i am transferring the IP packets back to a user lever application (via file interface CrateFile(), ReadFile(), WriteFile()) which then sends all those IP packets to the remote machine (a computer having similar VPN application and VNIC driver running) using a socket connection. I need to do following: 1. I would like to know how changing (increasing and/or decreasing) the MTU of the Virtual NIC could effect the performance of the system. Please feel free to give your thoughts/comments on it. 2. I also like to calculate time to transfer IP packet from my VNIC driver to the user level application. I just like to ask what APIs can I use in the driver to calculate time and then in the user application also to calculate time. I actually am thinking about getting system time using some API in the driver and put that time information in a packet and send that packet to user application. Then user application uses some other API to calculate time when it recieves the packet and then to calculate time difference by subtracting time calculated by the driver from that of user application. But I dont know which specific API should I use in user level application which gives me time in the same format as calculated by some other API in the driver.     - Problems with installation of NDISUIO-based protocol driver Hello, We've succesfully developed a protocol driver based on MS DDK sample NDISUIO and are installing it using the Service Manager API on Win2K/XP. Most of the time everything goes fine, but occasionally, on machines were previous installations went OK, we observe the following: installation seem to complete correctly, but the TCP/IP stack somehow looks unbound from some lower level layer, probably tcpip --for instance DCHP is not able to resolve an IP address and the IP interfaces show a no or limited connectivity status message. When this happens, uninstallaing, doing the installation again and rebooting usually get things straight again. Does this ring a bell to anybody? I can provide more info on demand.     - WIA Scanner Minidriver - Preview Not Working I've written a WIA minidriver and I cannot get the preview button to work. When I click the preview button (on the standard UI) I get a message that start, "An error occurred during preview. If the scanner is being used..." I'm not currently using the scanner and I believe I've defined WIA_DPS_PREVIEW correctly, but in my logs I don't see the driver trying to scan at all when I click preview.     - Hyperthread issue Hi , I have developed a virutal ethernet driver which runs on a pci card. This works fine on a single cpu machine(celeron) with windows XPE. when i want the same to work on the hyperthread machine (p4) with windows XPE, i am facing a problem. Send handler running in the Dispatch level, is called for the second time by the same cpu(say cpu 1), even before the first call gets completed. The send handler holds a spinlock within that is sends the acknowledgements to the application. During the 2nd call, when the cpu tries to acquire the spinlock, the system hangs. However, I would like to raise another aspect - can a "friendly" application be used in cooperation with NDIS mini-port driver to detect and to initiate the device low power setting. But in our situation we provide both an application and NDIS mini-port driver SW packages. Thus, my question is: Can we involve our application SW in order to initiate the NDIS mini-port driver low power setting? I have a PCI Card which is an additional paralell port. It is a plug &
play card and works so far fine. Unfortunately lots of software do only

recoginze the LPT by using the standard adress 378, 2F8 etc. My LPT
port is on another base address 0xDF00. Because it is a plug & play
card I am not able to change the settigns in the device manager.

Nope. There are several problems. First, if you rewrite the BAR register,
the operating system won't know about it, causing problems down the line.
Second, there is already a device on the motherboard answering to the
standard I/O port addresses, and there will be a clash.
