Can be a hardware damage to the drive due to dust on the laser head. This
manifests as "the drive can no more operate with some particular media types".
For instance, I have the old Asus E608 DVD drive which cannot read CD-RWs.
It can read factory DVDs, recorded DVD-Rs, factory CDs, and recorded CD-Rs. But
no CD-RWs.
