    - Q:Printer driver, paper information from MS Word I have a monolithic printerdriver under XP, but I can NOT seem to figure out how to read paper information from MS Word. In DrvDocumentPropertySheets, where I would expect to get the information, the DEVMODE from Word just returns my internal paper settings that I provided on first call, and I can NOT seem to force it to do otherwise.     - Accessing the SMBus through a Via 82C686 I am trying to talk to a device in an embedded PC that is on the SMBus. The SMBus controller is a VT82C686. I have never done driver development in Windows before so I'm a bit unsure of how to proceed. I've read the relevant sections in the Windows DDK and the questions and answers on usenet. The DDK example appears to be for writing a driver for a SMBus controller, rather than talking to an existing third-party driver. As the Microsoft-written drivers won't work with the Via chipset, I'm assuming the information I need will be from Via rather than MS. The DDK confused me. Can I just write a user-space application to talk to the SMBus controller, and have that pass on information? Does anybody know where information on using the Via driver is? Many thanks for any help.     - Read a file currently beeing used by a driver Hi In my driver, I do log some data in af file on the harddrive. It would be nice to read the file with notepad, will the driver still is running and using the file. I do have some problems doing this. This is what I would like to do: Read the file in eg. Notepad, while the driver stilling using the file If the file allready exits, the driver opens the file, and append anything new to it.     - /NOLOWMEM does not work I want to test handling of physical addresses above 4 GB in my kernel driver. The test system: 8 GB RAM Windows 2000 Advanced Server with all patches installed. The boot.ini entry: /PAE /3GB /NOLOWMEM /NUMCPUS=1 It seems that /NOLOWMEM flag doesn't work -- Task Manager and WinDbg !vm command still show about 8000 MB of RAM. /NOLOWMEM should be compatible with /3GB according to http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/PAEdrv.mspx "The /PAE, /NOLOWMEM and /3GB switches, and the registry change, can be used at once. Note that /3GB will prevent access to physical memory beyond 16 GB because the kernel memory space is reduced with the /3GB switch, and thus does not have enough room for the additional Page Table Entries required when memory is larger than 16 GB."     - Windows XP SP2 Printer Driver problem... A printer driver that was written and compiled using NTDDK was working fine for Windows 2000/XP. After installing XP SP2 the printer driver now causes a memory access violation in explorer.exe when selecting 'Printer Preferences' from the printer driver's property page about 4 out of 5 times. After re-compiling the driver with the current SDK (WINDDK\3790) it still has the same problem but only 1 in about 10 times does the access violation occur. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.     - Missing packet over HID USB stack Hi, I have a custom kernel mode function driver for a HID USB device. In Win2000 (SP4) I see a strange problem: after first time installation, the driver fails to read the first report (of 63 bytes data + 1 byte report id). I use a separate thread in which IRP_MJ_READ requests are issued to the HIDClass driver. It is seen that the requests block until some data is obtained, which is quite fine. But it fails to return the very first packet. All remaining packets are retrived properly. I am sure that the first packet is properly transmitted across the bus from data from USB tracer log. Notably, this behavior happens only during the first use of the device after fresh installation of the driver. Issue does not happen if the device is re-plugged and used again. Also this issue is not seen on the same driver when used in XP. Does anyone have clue what is going wrong in my Win2000 environment? Thanks in advance.     - Printer Driver upgrade Hi, When we upgrade a Microsoft Unidriver based Printer driver with the render and/or UI Plug-in dlls currently loaded by Explorer, the spooler uses the some algorithm wherein it replaces the files in the 3 directory(C:\WINNT\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3) with the new version and then copies the current version(currently loaded by exlporer) into the 'C:\WINNT\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\Old' directory. I have observed the same behavior with Monolithic printer drivers too wherein the render and/or UI dlls even if currently loaded by Explorer or any other App(Print dialog -> Properties) are replaced/upgraded in the 3 directory and the current version is copied into the 3\old directory. Now this is something that doesn't happen for other driver dependent files in the 3 directory. One thing that really puzzles me is the fact that the Process Explorer tool shows the UI/Render dlls loaded from 3 directory after upgrade but Iam unable to delete the dlls in the 3\old directory as well, which says 'access denied'. Iam not sure who's keeping the files loaded from 3\old directory? Any clue as to whats happening here would be of great help to me.     - Software only driver I am old in C/C++ programming but VERY new in drivers programming. I will need a bit of guidance, as my only book on the subject WDM - Walter Oney I've read did not helped. I want to build a "software only" driver that simulates an hard disk drive (virtual disk) that will keep in a file all its data. I want this to work on 98, 2000, XP and 2003. For the moment the target is only XP. 1. Do I need WDM or not? What are the sides to these two choices? 2. Do I need PnP and/or Power Management? What if I do not implement these for a "software only driver". 3. What is a legacy driver of type: "Kernel Mode Service"? Should I use this?     - Multiple instances Hi all, i developed a serial virtual port wdm driver. Now i'd like to have more than one instance of that port but when i install the second instance i have a generic error (it is not possible to load the driver). If i open my custom properties sheet for the second instance, i have the parameter coming from the first instance .... but i think this is a consequence of the starting error. How about the DLL and sys files ? They should be common for every instance ... is there a reference counter?     - PNP_LOCATION_INTERFACE? I'm writing a bus driver that reports a virtual NIC. I recently made changes to my NDIS miniport driver to enable DMA (call to NdisMInitializeScatterGatherDma). When I launch the HCT (11.2), this results in a bus interface query to the bus driver for a PNP_LOCATION_INTERFACE. I have implemented what I think the interface is supposed to do, but have failed to find any documentation.     - USB 2.0 on Win9x/ME/NT Hello, I have made a bulkOUT interrupt IN usb driver based on bulkusb.sys code in Win XPDDK and some help here and there from Walter Oney's book. My device is a High Speed USB 2.0 device working only on high speed. Now i want to make this driver work on Win 95/98/ME/NT . The problem is that there is no support for USB 2.0 in the Microsoft provided USB stack on these OSes. What is the best recommended way to develop a client driver for these OS as well , ideally to utilise the driver already built that works fine for 2k/XP. Are there any 3rd party USB stacks available that can be used in development and provide a similar API interface provided by Microsoft USB stack on 2k/XP. specifically i just build URBs and pass them over to usbd.sys which talks to usbhub.sys and usbehci.sys by itself .     - Hibernation fails if the scsiminiport DeviceExtensionSize > 32k Hi, I'm writing scsiminiport driver, when installing Windows XP SP1 over my device, hibernation fails. In the DDK it is written that a device driver must allocate less than 32k of uncached memory in order to participate in hibernation, my driver allocates 12k of uncached memory (using ScsiPortGetUncachedExtension() ). when I followed (assembly code) of windows I found that it fails to hibernate when comparing the deviceExtensionSize(43k in my case) against 32k. The DDK doesn't mention any restrections regarding deviceExtentionSize. I didn't find Knowledge Base article regarding this issue. The work around I'm thinking of is to allocate memory "externally" using ExAllocatePoolWithTag in the FindAdapter function and to free it when stopping the device in AdapterControl function.     - Filter Driver: Disk Enumeration I'm trying to write a disk filter driver, but unfortunately I'm not very familiar with the kernel yet. I've got a skeleton driver that lets my application control it via a special control device and DeviceIoControl. Now what I want to do is enumerate all devices of type FILE_DEVICE_DISK (specifically IDE/SCSI hard disks or RAID controllers) in the system and attach filter devices to them. Every driver I have looked at is a complete mystery: DriverEntry does absolutely nothing besides set up all the various callbacks. Somehow the kernel decides to call AddDevice for those drivers, but not in mine. I'm assuming there's some sort of registry key that I lack, but I'm truly at a loss here.     - Get current CPU, # of CPUs Is there a way for a driver to get the maximum number of CPUs so that it can allocate one structure per CPU? I know about KeQueryActiveProcessors, but "active" makes me uneasy. It's not ever possible to hot-plug CPUs, is it? And, is there a way to get an unambiguous identifier of the current CPU you're running on? Obviously, this would only make sense if it were just a hint or if it could be queried at DISPATCH_LEVEL or above, since otherwise the result could become wrong before you had a chance to see it. What I'd like to do is allocate some per-cpu junk to be maniuplated at DISPATCH_LEVEL and DIRQL and then be able to grab the appropriate one as necessary in a lock-free manner from ISRs and DPCs and such. I've heard people talking about this sort of thing as though it were a wise design technique, but I can't figure out how to do it!     - Cancel print job not effective with Word under Win ME Hi, I am facing a problem with cancelling a print job from printer queue. I use Windows ME and Word XP application. When I give a document to print and then cancel the job from print queue, the print job does not cancel. Could anyone tell me what exactly is the problem. The job cancels from MS Powerpoint, MS Excel, MS Paint, also MS IE. I tried couple of things later on with MS word case. I changed the spool settings to RAW and also I tried direct printing (disable spooling). In both these cases, the cancelling happens (not immediately though). I am working writing windows driver.     - Strange ISA's interrupt behavior on some computers I have wrote a driver for a non-PnP ISA board. I think it's not a WDM-driver because the board is not PnP and it starts not as usual WDM-drivers: it starts by DLL used by user-level programmer. DLL opens handle to ServiceManager, installs the driver and starts them. The device object is created in DriverEntry function. In one of IOCTL handlers the driver connects to interrupt: first is called HalGetInterruptVector, then IoConnectInterrupt and then it clears the interrupt for this ISA-board (the board is configured for interrupt using jumpers, no other board in computer uses this irq). Interrupt handler clears interrupt, shedules a DPC and returns true. On two of four computers it works fine. But on other two computers this does not work: interrupt handler is not called. The interrupt is level sensitive and should be triggered periodically using external signal. But I see, that interrupt handler is called only if I clear interrupt in some other IOCTL handler. And it's called only once. Àlthough is should be called periodically because interrupt is cleared in interrupt handler the same way as in specific IOCTL. Two computers that work fine are little older than two others: about Celeron (Pentium II) vs. Pentium 4 (865G chipset). What I am doing wrong? May be I'm doing stupidity? But I do not know another way to write a driver for non PnP-board for Windows 2000. Please make hints about right way for writing driver for a legacy ISA board.     - Function driver over HidClass Sorry for reposting. I have some more information, perhaps some HidClass expert can give some information on this issue with HIDClass on XP SP2. I have a kernel mode function driver for a Hid compatible hardware that gets loaded by Hid class. To get preparsed data from the device, my first step is to attach to the HidClass stack and open the HID collection which I try to do using by issuing an IRP_MJ_CREATE request. This is successful in Win98. Win2k and Win XP SP1. But on XP SP2 the IRP_MJ_CREATE returns with STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL. It is seen that dispatch handler for IRP_MJ_CREATE in Hidclass (HidpIrpMajorCreate) issues a call to ntoskrnl!._IoGetRequestorSessionId which fails (dont know why) and it returns with STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL. What am I missing for create request to fail? Could this be that I am missing some new requirement for create call? particular Volume ID string? In user mode, I can do it with CreateFile, but
