 - intermediate driver or others!!! Hi All, If I want to develop a layer to provide me with the NIC card/network (mainly connection less) information and have control over starting and stoping those NIC cards then do I have to develop a "NDIS Intermediate driver" or is there other solution(s)??? if the first one is correct, then I was reading in a web site that there are two ways of developing such, one is through Hooking and another through combined protocol/miniport driver, though it was saying that Hooking is best but not supported and not document by MS at all.... is this true??? where can I read indepth info on how to develop intermediate drivers???? thank you in advance. Hi, All, I develop a WDM Driver that in the AddDevice()£¬I use IoRegisterPlugPlayNotification() to register listen to an USB device's insert/remove.In its callback function, I use following code to get the DeviceObject£º if(IsEqualGUID(dicn->Event, GUID_DEVICE_INTERFACE_ARRIVAL)) { status = IoGetDeviceObjectPointer( dicn->SymbolicLinkName, FILE_ALL_ACCESS, &pFile, &pdo); ................. } I found that in win 2000£¬the pdo return back is tha same as the DeviceObject of the lower driver. So after that, the IRP build by me can be successfully send to the lower device¡£At this time, the dicn->SymbolicLinkName looks like \??\USB#Vid_6513Pid_0089#51e37dc9701#{guid} But in win98, the same codeget different result. IoGetDeviceObjectPointer £¨£©return NTSUCCESS£¬but the pdo return back is different from the DeviceObject of the lower driver. The IRP build by me£¬can't be send to lower driver by IoCallDriver()¡£what's the problem? this time £¬the dicn->SymbolicLinkName looks like \DosDevice\0000000000000002\{guid} Further more, I found that, in win 2000, when I call IoGetDeviceObjectPointer(), the lower driver will recieve an IRP_MJ_CREATE. But in win 98, the lower one can't recieve that IRP. why? It seems so strange. in win98, the IoGetDeviceObjectPointer() can return success, and give a pdo to me, but I can't use it.  - USBD DISPATCH_LEVEL Requests Is there any formal (or at least accurate) documentation on which USBD requests require/allow which IRQL? For instance, I know I can invoke URB_FUNCTION_BULK_OR_INTERRUPT_TRANSFER at DISPATCH_LEVEL and I know that URB_FUNCTION_SELECT_CONFIGURATION when called at DISPATCH_LEVEL (executes paged code at line 1025 of usbd\config.c).  - driver installation problem Hi, If I use the New Hardware Wizard and specify the wizard to "skip driver installations of this device. Windows will prompt again to perform the driver installation".  - PCI card driver: enumeration and interfaces Hallo, thank you for your help with my previous problems :) I'm developing a driver for a custom PCI card which exposes some resources. We want to hide the number of the cards from user mode, so i wrote another driver which enumerates the real devices and routes the requests to the appropriate device, appearing as one single big card. I've got some problems here: when I try to enumerate the devices, I only get the first device object, and I'm not able to obtain the other(s). I've got two cards installed at the moment, and with Device Three i can see both of them, but when i call IoGetDeviceInterfaces() I only get one entry, and the device object obtained from that entry with IoGetDeviceObjectPointer() has the NextDevice field set to null. How can i get the full list of the devices given the class id or the hwid ? Another thing: the two device types communicate through an interface. The upper device opens the lower device and sends a IRP_MN_QUERY_INTERFACE. in the lower device the request is handled properly, and the Status field is set to STATUS success, but back in the upper device i obtain an error in Status. Before calling IoCallDriver i set the Status field to STATUS_NOT_SUPPORTED and that (or whatever else i put in it) is the value that I get back.  - Legacy Driver - WTF is the card? Hi I have been learning (read oney's and the 2000 book) I can see and scan the PCI buss BUT I just realized the card I have (scrammnet memory card) isnt PNP. So after much crying and hating myself for not catching that ... its a PCI card w/fiber optic connections to other scrammnet cards on its network ... how do I find out where the card is (which slot) and what its i/o address and interupts are??  - NonStandard Floppy I want to access a nonstandard formatted floppy ( 256 bytes/sector, 16 sector/track) and the standard floppy driver don't know to read this kind of floppy. In W95 I did that with BOIS int1Eh (floppy drive parameters) and int 13h. How can I do that in NT/2000/XP? ( no BIOS interuptions access...) I begin to look the fdc example and I think that's the way ( modify the driver to know this particular format).  - AVStream avshws DDK example I'm playing around with avshws to learn AVStream. avshws shows up in the "WDM Streaming Capture Devices" category in GraphEdit. I'd like the driver to appear in "Video Capture Sources" as well. I have some ideas as to how this might be done, but I'd like to get a deeper understanding. Any info is appreciated. AMCap only enumerates CLSID_VideoInputDeviceCategory devices, as do most capture apps that I'm aware of. What logic determines which categories a video capture card should belong to?  - Link error with ScsiDebugPrint & ScsiPortInitialize I'm trying to create a scsi port driver but I'm having problems with the miniport functions. I'm using DDK 3790 and have created WDM drivers in the past with no problem. I've event directly specified the library files using TARGETLIBS but that makes no difference.  - NEC dvd driver problem Hope I'm in the right newsgroup! I have just bought a NEC 2500 dvd rw, but have major problems installing it. WindowsXP is recognising the drive but is unable to load the drivers. The balloon message says Found New Hardware _NEC dvd rw 2500a Found New Hardware CD Rom Found New Hardware _NEC dvd rw 2500a Found New Hardware CD Rom and so on and so on. The drive is not fully recognised or usable, and is automatically disabled in the device manager. I can sometimes get XP to recognise the dvd drive by uninstalling and re-installing the dvd drivers and forcing enable and it will work fine for a while. When I re-start XP the balloon message will again pop up and it starts all over again. This appears to be a recognised problem and is mentioned on the NEC website but the following solution proposed by them does not work. You need to choose to your "DRIVERS" folder. Then change or delete the folder "MONITOR" Switch to "C:WINDOWS" Ensure that you have in windows explorer settings option activated to see ALL data (also hided and system files) Switch to "c:WINDOWSINF" Look for the "INFCACHE.1" file and delete it Switch to your desktop trash can and empty it If problem cant be solved, pls. contact manufacturer of your PC package.  - Difference between Local Disk aund Removable Disk Hi, I have read Mark Roddy's article on http://www.wd-3.com/121503/luserland.htm. He described as you can get the sector address (LBA) a file on a harddisk. His sample code works for NTFS & FAT32 partions. With a small look in the FAT spec and some adaptations the sample also works for FAT12/16. The sample works on W2K & WXP for harddisks and all disks declared as "Local Disk". For "Removable Disk" like a USB Mass Storage Device this sample (API call DeviceIoControl/IOCTL_VOLUME_LOGICAL_TO_PHYSICAL) does not work and system error 50 (not supported) does occur. The same device declared as "Local Disk" everythink does work. Is there are a workaround to get DeviceIoControl/IOCTL_VOLUME_LOGICAL_TO_PHYSICAL data also on "Removable Disks" or is there are another possibility to get the wanted information on another way?  - Access USB device from userland Hi, I'm trying to write a application that is able to send vendor unique reqeust to our USB device. I tried USBView in DDK, but it doesn't work on my XP box. It always fails in IOCTL_USB_GET_NODE_CONNECTION_INFORMATION_EX. Is there any documentation related with USB userland app? Hi, I am trying to access the miniport driver from user mode, when trying to access the display driver all works fine, BUT when trying to get the miniport handle ( at user mode ) I keep getting an invalid handle with a file not found last error code... Why can this happen? The driver name I am using is found under 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\%DriverName%' and the same name found in the .inf file used to install the driver...  - unresolved external using standard C lib I feel like an idiot, but this is my first time trying to compile things in the DDK environment. I'm trying to use the C standard runtime function "fopen" in a driver. I've included stdio.h and the code compiles fine, but when it links, I get "unresolved external symbol __imp__fopen referenced in function..."  - Questions on PCI config space when ressetting a PCI board Hi, I'm developing a wdm driver under Win2K for a proprietary PCI board. Unfortunately, the board's PCI interface logic is part of a FPGA that can only be fully reset by reconfiguring the FPGA. We foresee that we need to reset our board on certain occasions and we do not want to power-cycle our system for this. Therfor, I'm implementing the following reset sequence in my driver: Because the reconfiguration of the FPGA resets the PCI config space, I start with saving this data (after having disabled the boards PCI interface). I then call PoRequestPowerIrp to force the board to go to device state D3. In the IoCompletion routine, PoRequestPowerIrp is called again to force the board to go back to device state D0 (this actually resets our FPGA and the PCI config space). In the IoCompletion routine of the second PoRequestPowerIrp, I restore the PCI config space data and reenable the PCI interface. When, in the above scheme, I use the sequence IoBuildAsynchronousFsdRequest() - IoSetCompletionRoutine() - IoCallDriver() to read or write the PCI configuration space, this completion routine is called with DeviceObject = NULL. I solve this by passing the DeviceObject via the 'context' of the completion routine. Is this normal or could I be doing something wrong here? Apart from the above problem the sequence seems to work, but I am not sure wether I should also save and restore the power management registers of the PCI config space. Or should I leave this to the pci.sys bus driver who does the actual D0/D3/D0 switching ? Also, I'm not sure that the above will work under all circumstances so I would appreciate it if anybody knows where to find some more info on stuff like this. Opened an XP checked build window via the start menu. 2.. Navigated to "C:\DDK\WINDDK\2600.1106\src\print\oemdll\oemps". 3.. Typed "build -cef" 4.. The kernel mode driver KOEMPS.DLL was built and placed in "C:\DDK\WINDDK\2600.1106\src\print\oemdll\i386". My goal is to generate a random number in PSCommand method of "C:\DDK\WINDDK\2600.1106\src\print\oemdll\oemps\command.cpp" 1.. Using the VC6.0 IDE, I added the following to the pscommand method: LARGE_INTEGER time; ULONG seed; // seed value should be a global or in device extension ULONG rand; // random value KeQuerySystemTime(&time); // only do first time or in init code! seed = (ULONG) time; rand = RtlRandom(&seed); // get random number 2.. I then changed the line to '#include < C:\DDK\WINDDK\2600.1106\inc\ddk\wxp\ntddk.h>'. The compile failed again because I had several redefinition errors.  - Need Help on POSUSB Hi , I am implementing a Virtual Com port driver for our Target Device on WinXp. For this, I have taken the reference driver code from Microsoft POSUSB The issue is that while doing an install / Uninstall or Enable / Disable of the Virtual Com Port, the OS asks for a system restart. I am interested in knowing if this is an acceptable behavior as we are planning to do HCT validation of the driver. We have referred to the HCT documentation for the same, but in no place does it say that this restart is acceptable. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find how serial port emulation can be done without the above said behavior. when i Disable/Enable or Install/Uninstall the device, i am not handling the RemovalRelations in the IRP_MN_QUERY_REMOVE_DEVICE.i am just passing that IRP down as STATUS_SUCCESS. after that i am geting IRP_MN_CANCEL_REMOVE_DEVICE this is because of bus driver not process it proper. I want to write a driver for it such that when I open windows explorer I will see my card shown as drive D: (or E: if there is a CD rom in the system). I have been reading books, including Programming the MS WDM 2nd, Oney, and the DDK documentation from the lastest DDK for Window 2000/XP. Too much information has made me confused. 1. Should I write the SCSI mimiport driver that will layer below the scsi port driver? I read about this SCSI miniport things but it's really confused. I have thought about this but when I look at the functions that I have to implement shown in the DDK, it is too complicated. My PCI card does not use DMA and IRQ. It only need two 32-bit registers and a 4k memory range and an IO port that is part of the PCI config space. 2. What are the alternatives? Port driver? I thought my driver must be a port driver, since it must tell the system how to read and write to the PCI register. But it must contain a layer that tell the system that my drive is a D: drive.  - Keyboard mouse stream separation - again... Hello folks, again I am having a few questions belonging to my previous topics. I want to separate keyboard and mouse streams originating from different devices - Windows shall only get the information of one device combo. The others shall be used for whatever. I have written adopted DDK filter driver examples for PS/2 chain. This works but is a bit dirty. The DDK also contains the original "keyboard class" and "mouse class" drivers. Wouldn´t it be possible to adopt them to deliver this feature? How are those driver examples installed? DDK help says that they are protected by system driver protection... we are design a PCMCIA memory card that has Intel 28F800B flash memory.
How do I design a software that it can program the flash memory in windows 2000 ?
do I need to write a mtd driver ? or I can use existing MS driver ?
I need some guidelines.
