    - vista does not call DrvStartPage after DrvStartDoc on 3 new dell I have a user mode printer driver that works on windows 2000, xp, and vista. About 1000 working customers (15 windows 2000, 900+ windows xp, and about 30 vista machines). One customer installed it recently on new Dell desktop computer. When I turn on the embeded debug on customer's computer the vista OS calls DrvStartDoc and then instead of calling DrvStartPage the OS calls DrvDisableSurface, does not generate any output and it completes without error. three non working customers machines two identical machines Dell Optiplex 4677 with 32 vista business edition 2037k ram Intel processor. third customer machine has same problem with new dell computer optiplex 740 with amd 64x2 antholon dual core 4200 2.2ghz 2gb ram running 32 bit vista business my machine is satellite p105 (toshiba) vista ultimate 2gb mem Works on my laptop running vista and several other vista installations. Driver is based on C:\WinDDK\6000\src\print\msplot compiled with vista wdk released 12-5-6 using Windows XP x86 Checked Build Environment Things I have tried to fix problem: Driver signing has no effect.     - getting handle to device This one should be a no-brainer, I just added a dispatch routine to my bus filter driver that is supposed to return status information back. I register the interface in the AddDevice routine. This appears to be working, as I can see each instance enumerated under my GUID in the currentcontrolset\Control\DeviceClasses. The problem is after modifying the toaster examples enum application to use my GUID, I the SetupDiEnumDeviceInterfaces call fails and the last error is ERROR_NO_MORE_ITEMS. I double checked that I am using my new GUID, and that the correct number of instances of my device is in the registry. What I would like to know is how can I tell if my driver is not registering the interface correctly, or am I not accessing the interface correctly? Thanks Brian Tag: VCM Tag: 101293

    - usb rndis device Hello, I am having a problem getting an USB RNDIS ethernet device that I have developed to work properly in Windows XP SP2. I am expecting the Windows provided class drivers usb8023/rndismp to be loaded. My device presents descriptor information as per the Microsoft RNDIS specification, but is not recognized and the complaint is "The device is not configured correctly".     - Memory leak from IoCreateDevice and driver loading Hello, We're having a memory leak problem, and it looks like it comes from Windows. Windows leaks about 50-100 bytes anytime a driver gets loaded/unloaded, affecting both the device insertion case and manual load/unload of drivers via service control manager. The problem can easily be seen by using the ddk example and pooltag utility. - Using WDK, build <wdk>\src\general\ioctl\sys driver, and install it - run the awesome pooltag utility from OSR (http://www.osronline.com/article.cfm?article=98) Steps to reproduce: - launch pooltag utility. There are hell NVRs from different vendors that accept MPEG-4 stream, but interesting part is that these NVRs will just work with IP cameras from same vendor.     - How to use make a UMA frame buffer mapping from kernel to user mod Hi, I'm trying to implement a method to map a reserved virtual space (created by MmAllocateMappingAddress and MmMapLockedPagesWithReservedMapping) from kernel to user mode process. From the DDK description for VideoPortMapMemory, it seems we can do UMA (universal memory architecture) frame buffer mapping as suggested in the comments. The steps are: 1. Call InitializeObjectAttributes to get object attributes; 2. Call ZwOpenSection to get the handle of the section object; 3. Call ZwmapViewOfSection to get the virtual address of the view; My question is how to set up the relation between the reserved virtual space and the section view, that's to say, how to find a section object to represent the reserved virtual space?     - Virtual Desktops, like in *nix with Xserver Hello, I am sure you know about Virtual Desktops. UNIX had them for about 20 years. There are some implementations for Windows too, even a Microsoft one, but for some reason they all suck. The primary reason is that they provide only an emulation of the real stuff -- basically they minimize one set of applications in one desktop, one set in another and so on -- they aren't real Virtual Desktops. The best implementation so far seems to be Virtual Dimension, but it still sucks, mainly because there are application that make hacks in the GUI, ignoring any recommendation. The main issue, is that all this are emulations -- Windows doesn't have the capability for Virtual Desktops. That is why I have thought of implementing it via a driver! I am not sure what the best way is -- I need to make it hardware independent -- that is -- it should not matter what video card you use.     - USB Host Controller and USS Hub Hi All, I am a windows driver developer working on USB. I have few questions on USB. 1.Role of Host Controller driver/hw and Root Hub driver/hw in enumerating a newly connected usb device. 2.How does usbhub.sys know the device connected to roothub? Does Host controller hw/driver informs it? 3.Is there any difference in device detection when connected to the root hub port and the externel hub port(usb hub connected to the root hub). I suppose same driver is loaded for the root hub as well as external hub. 4.Does USB Host Controller use any ISR for detecting the device connected to the root hub? If so what about the device connected to the external hub. 5.Will (Host controller? or Hub?)keep polling by itself on all the visible ports for the device arrival? If you know, where all this information regarding the Host Controller and Hub exists, please give the references to me.     - d Drive full with system restores I am in need of urget help before my PC dies. I have a Presario 56500NX with partitioned drives. All of my programs and files are saved on C drive. C drive capacity is 144GB, free space is 124GB with 86% free space. Drive D is a totally different story! Capacity 5.14GB Free space is 982MB with only 18% free space. I researched it, and on both drives did "disk cleanups", "file compressions", uninstalled programs no longer used, defraged both drives, deleted all "system restores" with exception of current date. I copied my 1 system restore to disks. Can I now go in and delete all the files on D drive. HP support advised me to un-install my OS and reinstall. Will that work??? I really don't want to hose my PC...I use my PC to work from home. I am desperate for help!! :>( Tag: VCM Tag: 101239

    - MmProbeAndLockPages for user buffer pointer I have some doubts on mapping user pointers in the kernel - Lets say I have to have a user pointer passed within a struct as input to deviceiocontrol. I need to read stuff from this user pointer location. So within the driver dispatch handler I do the foll: mdl = IoAllocateMdl(userBuf, userBufLen, FALSE, TRUE, NULL); // Probe and lock within a try except loop MmProbeAndLockPages(mdl, UserMode, IoReadAccess); ASSUMING I never send the userBuf down to any other lower driver, dpc or completion routines - can I read from userBuf pointer directly within the dispatch handler ? .. Or do I still have to call MmGetSystemAddressForMdlSafe and only access the returned virtual address ? I guess I am not entirely certain if the userBuf virtual address is guaranteed to be valid with just doing a ProbeAndLock. Is there any way this virtual address could become invalid ?     - BREAK_RESERVATION returning STATUS_INVALID_DEVICE_REQUEST Would anyone know why IOCTL_STORAGE_BREAK_RESERVATION would return STATUS_INVALID_DEVICE_REQUEST ? This is issued using IoCallDriver() in my driver, the request originates from the MS cluster service I believe. I've checked the values in 'Irp->AssociatedIrp.SystemBuffer' as per the STORAGE_BREAK_RESERVATION_REQUEST structure, they seem correct. Thus I added the following code to the IRP_MN_START_DEVICE routine: UsbBuildGetDescriptorRequest(...); IoBuildDeviceIoControlRequest(IOCTL_INTERNAL_USB_SUBMIT_URB,...); This works so far, BUT analyzing the USB-transfers after plugging in the device I get the following USB-stream: 1. SetAddress() 2. GetDescriptor(Device) 3. GetDescriptor(Configuration) ... Now my Driver starts and I get another GetDescriptor(Device). Is it somehow possible to get the USB-descriptors from the lower USB-Bus driver without resending a GetDescriptor-request to the USB-device? Or is it some odd behavior of the Host-Controll-Driver? While sofware links will be ok, the HW RFDs link will be broken because, pHwRfd->RfdCbHeader.CbStatus = 0; pHwRfd->RfdActualCount = 0; pHwRfd->RfdCbHeader.CbCommand = (RFD_EL_BIT); pHwRfd->RfdCbHeader.CbLinkPointer = DRIVER_NULL; AND // Link it onto the end of the chain dynamically pHwRfd = pLastMpRfd->HwRfd; pHwRfd->RfdCbHeader.CbLinkPointer = pMpRfd->HwRfdPhys; pHwRfd->RfdCbHeader.CbCommand = 0; WILL only fix the CURRENT and NEXT links and NOT the PREVIOUS HW RFD link. There should be a way to fix the previous HW RFD link pointer also. something like pPREV_RFD->RfdCbHeader.CbLinkPointer = PENULTIMATE_TAIL- >RFD_PA This code luckily works as long as pMpRfd in NICReturnRFD(Adapter, pMpRfd) is the HEAD ENTRY. In MpHandleRecvInterrupt ( ... ) it was a lucky case and in MPReturnNetBufferLists(...) and a couple of other places it looks like a BUG. Can some one clarify?     - Virtual Cdrom Driver Port to Vista Dear all, I have a Virtual Cdrom Driver, it can emulate an ISO file on network drive as a Cdrom.It works well on Win2k/WinXp/Win2003. I need to port it to Windows Vista, but it can't work well. In this driver, I use DO_DIRECT_IO as I/O flags, use MmGetSystemAddressForMdl( Irp->MdlAddress) to get current Mdl Address, and use ZwReadFile to read data from Virtual Cdrom. I also use MmGetMdlByteCount(Irp->MdlAddress) to get the length of system assigned buffer for Mdl. On Win2k/Xp/2003, ZwReadFile can be executed normally. For the first 3 executed times for ZwReadFile, the length of Mdl buffer is 2k, from the 4th time of executed ZwReadFile, the length of Mdl buffer is 4k. But on Vista, ZwReadFile can be only executed 3 times, the length of Mdl buffer is also 2k for these 3 times. For the 4th executed times of ZwReadFile, the Mdl buffer is 32k, ZwReadFile is blocked and can't be executed anymore. Also the driver is blocked. Can anyone give me a hint for this issue? I found it strange that I cannot update my already-installed unsigned driver after I made changes to driver code and recompiled. I was able to install driver first time. But updating driver is the problem. It updates the driver only after I changed the inf file date and version. For my testing this is really cumbursome. Everytime I compile the driver after minor change, I cannot reinstall the driver. I have to change inf file also with some other version number. Is this necessary? Any workaround for my driver testing. I didnot have problem with windows XP wherein we can do "have disk" and overwrite the driver binary. I want to replace driver binary with new driver binary for testing. Other information about driver can remain same. Is there any simple way to do this?     - Bitmap printer driver on XP I try to adapt Bitmap sample (from DDK) to save in JPEG or other formats, all pages printed. I'ts works well when all pages have the same orientation (all pages in portrait, or all pages in landscape). But when I try to print mixed pages from Word or other software, I get only the last one. Example : 1st page is in Portrait 2nd page is in Landscape 3th page is in Portrait I get only the page #3. In debug mode, i see the OEMSendpage is never called in these case. I have created a virtual bus driver ( Bus FDO). I can create the multiple virtual ports also (Port PDOs). Later I can add the same number of Port FDO s as my PDO s, to create COM interface to my applications. Now I have a Multiple virtual COM interface. But the exact requirement of my project is to create the ports only when instructed by an application above. I think I can delay the making of FDO (so that there is no COM interface). But since the PDO s are present(which were installed when bus driver was inserted.). It shows in the device manager as unknown device. I dont want this to happen. Is there any way I could dynamically install Port PDO s(not along with Bus driver), when i get signal from application. More specifically "CAN A BUS DRIVER, DYNAMICALLY ENUMERATE ITS PORTS (NOT DEVICES CONNECTED TO ITS PORTS)". or the only way I have is to insert another bus driver when i want another port.     - Issues about USB composite device driver I want to develop an USB composite device driver. The device has one configuration and 6 interfaces in it. According desription of DDK(2003 sp1, 3790.1830) documents, Windows system(XP and later) had supplied an USB common class generic parent driver, that is usbccgp.sys. This driver can be loaded when our device pluged in and create 6 PDO for each interface. So we can install driver for each interface. But I have found some problems about this description. 1. OS can't find the usbccgp.sys driver and install it automatically for our device. I had searched the c: partition(my system disk) but can't find the usbccgp.sys file. My Windows system is XP sp2. Why and where can I get the usbccgp.sys file? 2. I write a inf file and reference usbhub.sys to install driver for our device. Yes! usbhub.sys can work! It enumrates 6 devices from our device for each interface. Then I install drivers for each device. I can install driver for interface number 0(matched ID is USB\VID_xxxx&PID_xxxx&MI_00) and the driver work well. But when I try to install driver for other interface, it failed! The failed position is when I try to select configuration for USB device with USBD_CreateConfigurationRequestEx and submit it to host driver. Laterly, I found some useful information from DDK document. It said that host driver can't support selecting configuration in composite USB device. But the problem is that where can I get the interface information and pipe information(ep address and pipe handle etc.) if I can't get those information from selecting configuration?     - WHQL certification of laptop - USB issue Hello I'm stuck with strange behaviour of the USB subsystem preventing requirements for WHQL certification of a laptop with an embedded USB device. First things first. Here's an interesting test: I'm experiencing a strange phenomenon with USB devices that are surprise-removed during standby. I've seen it happening with USB hubs, USB sticks, USB hard drives and USB 3G devices. It happens in Win2000 and WinXP. These are the steps taken: 1. Plug in one of the mentioned USB devices. 2. In Bootvis, initiate standby test. 3. During standby, unplug the USB device -> surprise-removal. 4. Resume. 5. Wait for Bootvis to finish. In Bootvis you can see that the device driver of the unplugged USB device eats an extra +/- 3 seconds of resume time (compared with the resume time in a situation where you do not unplug the device). The exact device driver depends on the USB device; I've noticed the 3 extra seconds with usbhub.sys, usbcgpp.sys, usbstor.sys, and gt72ubus.sys (3th party 3G driver). When you unplug multiple USB device during standby, the system eats 3 seconds for each unplugged device. I found out that during resume from standby, the USB subsystem eats 3 seconds for each unplugged device during standby. Technically: When a USB function driver sends down the set D0 power request for an unplugged device, some lower-level code happily sleeps for 3 seconds and completes the request. At this point, the USB function driver doesn't know of the surprise-removal yet; that event happens later. Can anyone tell me why Win2000/XP behaves like this? So in my case: The laptop has a built-in embedded USB function, a MiniPCIe card. The laptop de-powers the card during standby, hence a surprise-removal happens and resume from standby takes an extra 3 seconds. As a result, the total resume time for this laptop takes more than 5 seconds. The laptop needs to be WHQL-certified (logo) for WinXP.     - STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL after calling WdfDeviceStopIdle Hi experts, I'm facing a problem with my KMDF USB driver when coming back from idle (D2 power state) My USB driver receives no IRPs (or WDFREQUESTS for that matter). Data passes through it only via direct function calls from an NDIS miniport on a different stack. I've set the idle timeout to be 1 millisecond and the idle setting are by default "off", i.e. I call WdfDeviceStopIdle as soon as the miniport connects to USB driver Whenever I want to go to low power state, the driver calls WdfDeviceResumeIdle and the driver goes to D2. All work fine until this point. Whenever I want to restore my communication with the device I call WdfDeviceStopIdle. In the context of the EvtDeviceSelfManagedIoRestart (after we're in D0) I send the request. The problem is that the requrest fails with status 0xC0000001. The USBD status of the failure is 0x0. Same failure occurs for both read and write request. Same failure occurs even if the request is sent not from the context of the EvtDeviceSelfManagedIoRestart context but rather from the context of a dedicated workitem which is spawned from the EvtDeviceSelfManagedIoRestart context. I used a USB sniffer to sense what is going on when the error occurs; I see that there are no Start of Frames (SOFs) at all! When I increase the idle timeout to about 250 milliseconds the problem disappears. I have no explanation for this. I can supply the KMDF log of the failure if anyone wishes to see. I've looked at it but saw no explanation for the failure. What could be the reasons for this error status? So the nStatus will be stay by STATUS_PENDING forever and the application freezes by calling GetOverlappedResult(hDevice, &overLapped, &dwBytesRet, TRUE) function. So far I have understood... In the msdn article about 'IoCompletion', I saw these line : If an IoCompletion routine returns STATUS_MORE_PROCESSING_REQUIRED, the lower driver's call to IoCompleteRequest immediately returns. In this case, a higher-level driver will have to call IoCompleteRequest to complete the IRP. I found the WdfRequestCompleteWithInformation function in my source code, but this will be call just for the case !NT_SUCCESS(Irp->IoStatus.Status) == TRUE (I think, this is the case for invalid parameters).
