    - Address/Port Forwarding/Translation I need to build a small "port forwarder" that will check some security settings before allowing traffic through. Can anyone suggest a good component for doing the port forwarding? Alternatively, is there a good open source project that does this?     - Creating Excel File from ASP.Net for Macintosh I am working on a project where I need to create an excel file from our ASP.Net website and have it saved on a Macintosh computer. Currently, it is saving the .xls file just fine on the MAC, but when you go to open it, it opens the file as a new workbook. When you go to save it, it tries to save it as the auto-generated workbook name that excel gives to it. The problem is that I want to be able to allow a user to import the file directly to another software without having to re-save it every single time. The current code uses Response.Write to create the excel file. Any ideas?     - How to find out why program crashed from a .dmp file? A program crashed silently. Fortunately, I was able to get a .dmp file. Hopefully it can provide us with info on why it crashed. When I opened the .dmp file in Notepad, it took a long time to open it. Then I see unreadable characters, supposedly to be executable-type of file.     - How to retrieve service name at runtime I have a Windows service that we need to have multiple instances running. We achieve this by using InstallUtil Service.exe /name="SomeServiceName". I need to know the name of the instance of the service that is running at runtime, the name displayed in the Services UI. If I examine ServiceName at runtime I do not get the name assigned by InstallUtil that is shown in the services UI nor do I get the default name assigned by the ServiceInstaller class.     - It is not my inbox. Dear, We have faced a new security lapse in our network. It is a network of around 100 people accessing internet using ISA proxy server over an ADSL line of 2mbps. from last few days I received complains from our users that when person A is opening his hotmail account in his computer he could see some others (Person B) Inbox. It sounds a High scare among the users in the network. Parson A could see the mail list in the inbox but couldnt open. And these users never use each others computer for any reason and never logs into others acount. This is noticed one more person C also could see the inbox items of Person B in his computer. All these computers are in rthe same VLAN. If any of you come accross this situations please let me know how this could be resolved for ever. What kind of security lapse is this? PLease do help.     - Repost: Export to PDF - Smaller Fonts - Known Issue Reposted, originally posted in microsoft.public.vb.crystal which is not an MSDN managed newsgroup.... POST BELOW --------------------- We develop our applications and reports using Visual Studio 2008 with Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio 2008. The same issue that's been around for years, where you export a report to PDF and during the export process, CR shrinks the fonts of text and field objects on the report. Simply put, this is overly annoying. Now that we've upgraded our application to use VS2008 (from VS2003). When we use larger fonts, the font size appear (but upon closer inspection, are not exactly) very close to the right size, but they are not. Not only that, the size of the fields in question still shrink! The field width shrinks but the font does not....so, either we have smaller font sizes that really makes the reports look ugly, or larger font sizes with LOTS of clipping of the text within the object. How can we get around this to where the exported report actually looks like the report in the designer? #1, we have to use crystal reports and #2, we have to export to PDF.... As a side question, why hasn't Business Objects fixed this problem? It's been a known problem for many years...they had a hotfix which fixed it by truncating text....but in the designer, the text fits perfectly...so they provided a hotfix for the hotfix which just removes the previous hotfix and the developer is back to square 1!     - Vista UAC - get app to request escalation for a task Hi, How do I ask for escalation from within a program? I'm developing a standalone program that can also act as a 'plugin' to another application. The way the other app was designed, it scans a plugin folder in its "program files" folder for settings documents which contain all the settings it needs to know to call the plug-in apps. The problem, of course, is permissions. Under vista, even the administrator accounts are prevented from writing to the folder without escalation. So I how do I request escalation so that my program can save the settings file to its plugin folder? right now it just throws an exception 'access denied'. I'd be happy if I could get the 'The program is trying to access a protected folder..." type of message that they could just accept. After all, it only normally needs to be done once.     - .Net vs VB6 on autorun.inf Wondering if anyone here has come up with a different solution than I keep coming back to: Here is a thought and I just can't seem to come up with another solution other than to install my old VB6 cds'. I want to create a nice splashy screen that will run from ( Autorun.inf ) on a CD when a cd is installed. Creating the splash screen in vb6 - is no problems. Creating it in .net 2008 causes me headaches as to why would someone want to install the .net framework to see a nice application main screen running. ( If they don't have it installed ). It takes away a bit from the easy portability ( at this time ) while there could be / and are some computers out there without the framework installed.     - How Can a Server Raise an Event at a Client (Remoting) I've read numerous articles and bits of code that purport to do this, but I think there is a gap somewhere (quite possibly in my head). I have a server, which is actually a Windows service. I also have a client that needs to retrieve information from this service, but also needs to receive events from it, when it (the client) is running. I've done all the MBO stuff, and the client can pick up info from the server at will. That was the easy bit. Now, I want the service/server to be able to raise an event, and the client to handle it. The sticking point seems to be: How do I raise the event in the server? It seems to me that in order to do that I need a reference to the MBO on which the event is to be raised. In my server I have Dim identifier As String = "MyServer" Dim mode As WellKnownObjectMode = WellKnownObjectMode.Singleton Dim entry As WellKnownServiceTypeEntry entry = New WellKnownServiceTypeEntry(GetType(MyServerMBO), identifier, mode) RemotingConfiguration.RegisterWellKnownServiceType(entry) But how do I get a reference to the MyServerMBO that is created? I have tried making everything Shared, so that I don't need a reference, but although I can see the RaiseEvent call being made, the debugger steps right over it, indicating that there is nothing attached to it, and the client never receives a call.     - Really stuck with subsequent web services call checking Hi, My next project is to integrate our order system (ASP.NET) with our parent company (JAVA) using web services. I've managed to get the web service authentication working by sending a username/password in the header using the code from the following URL. However, the username/ password gets checked on all the subsequent calls as well which is redundent. I need to bind it to an object and use the object to make all the subsequent calls on the same .asp page (maybe a token). One method is to create an order, another to add the products all on the same page. Heres my problem. I work in the IT department at a local bank and we are in the process of deploying new PCs for some of the employees with older work stations. I just finished staging about a dozen of them and in the next month or so we will be recieving a shippment of about 20 or more. Our staging process involves several different things including running the initial setup of windows, updating windows, configuring certain things in the system properties such as adding the computer to the local domain, installing several different programs, and changing the security properties for a few different things. Needless to say, this is a very long, time consuming process. I can spend between 2 and 3 hours on each individual machine, and thats before it even leaves the IT department! Just recently I thought "Hey, I could probably use a batch file to do most of this stuff". So, I began constructing the code and, of course, ran into many problems. I've learned alot about how batch files work and their syntax but I'm not very experienced with them. Here is a list of problems that I've ran into: 1. I don't know how to change system properties or if it is even possible -I need to add the computer to the local domain -I need to uncheck the Allow Remote Assistance in the remote tab 2. I need to map a network drive 3. I have to change the security settings for a folder -I need to add the Domain Users group with full control privledges *I already found the command (cacls) but i keep getting the error message "The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed". Whats that all about? 4. I need to access the Computer Management Console -Add APP-ZEUS to the Power Users group 5. I need to change the trusted sites in internet security settings -Uncheck the Require Server Verification box -Add an IP address to the sites 6. And last but DEFINENTLY not least, I want to know if its possible to automate software installations and setups with a batch and, if so, how. Ok, I know thats alot but help would be greatly appreciated. I've searched the web but it seems like I'm getting everything except what I need.     - Delegates help I am trying to understand delegates and I think I do understand them ... just hoping if someone can tell me im on the right track. So far what I have read is that a Delegate is an Asynchronus call to a method or function or whatever... So basically you create an object that references the address of the meathod. By calling this delegate - you get a 'return' right away so your code can continue and the delegate runs in a different thread doing whatever the function / meathod is required. Is this the correct assumption? The example in the book is pretty simple ( its a writeline command ). So as far as 'uses' for delegates ( if im on the right track )...its useful when you have a lot to process, but do not want to do it in the main thread ( or the app will temporarily stop working ), you use a delegate to call the meathod in a different thread.     - Add caption to inline photo in Hotmail message How do i write a caption under a photo in a Hotmail message? I have seen these in joke emails etc where the pictures will be displayed in the message body with writing under each one. But when i use Attach: Photo, the photos are shown to be attached but i cannot see them in my message body to be able to write under them.     - .NET CGI script has inadequate permissions to receive form data ??? I'm trying to write a CGI script in C#; it receives data from an HTML form via the POST method, and tries to read the form data using System.Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable(). Which is where I have a problem. When I use a 32-bit build of the CGI script, everything works swimmingly. But when I use a 64-bit build of the CGI script, GetEnvironmentVariable() throws a System.Security.SecurityException saying it doesn't have permission to read the environment variable. (I'm running Windows XP Professional x64 and .NET 2.0 SP1 64 bit, and my web server is IIS 6.) There must be something I'm missing, because if not, then it would be impossible to write 64-bit CGI scripts in C# that use the POST method. But: does anyone have any theories? I've tried getting Visual Studio to sign the executable, to no avail. And oddly, I can set the 32-bit build of the executable to be fully trusted (using "caspol -af CgiScript.exe) but if I try to do the same thing with the 64-bit build I get an "ERROR: Unable to load assembly". My HTML form, CGI source code, and the 64-bit output (including the exception) are below.     - Initializing a generic SortedList with sorted data Howdy all, The msdn help says this about SorteList<k,v>: "If the list is populated all at once from sorted data, SortedList is faster than SortedDictionary." My question is this: how do I initialize a SortedList all at once from sorted data? The only constructors that populate the container take a IDictionary as the source of the data. .NET Reflector shows that these constructors call Sort after they copy the data in, so this can't be what the help was referring to (never mind trying to figure out which concrete dictionary class can supply the sorted data). After construction, the only way to supply values is one at a time with the Add method for the array indexer property. The Keys and Values properties are essentially read only. The Add method doesn't look like it will be any faster for a sequence of sorted data. Each call performs a full binary search to locate the insertion point. I don't see any optimizations for when the value is be greater that the last element. My workaround is to do something hideously ugly involving reflection. What 2007? Word? Some other product that uses a spell checker?
