One easy solution is to add (or use the existing) status code field,
and Update that field value in the workflow right after you create the
activity(ies).
So the workflow could be:
Action: Add phone call activity
Update: Set status =3D 1
Wait for Activity to be completed
Action: Add Task
Update: Set Status =3D 3
etc.
