I have data in migrated (integrated) into CRM. I'm wanting to take my
database of accounts and assign a territory to them based on zip code. Is
there a way to do this "automatically" where I can do something like "all
accounts with the zip code 12345 should be assigned to Sales Rep #1"?

I know there's a way to do this in Workflow Manager when a new account is
created or some other action takes place, but is there a way to do this
assigning with accounts that currently exist in CRM?

Brandon,

You could do this with a Manual Workflow rule. You'd still need to invoke
it for each account though. Otherwise, you'd be looking at writing a
process to update the accounts via the SDK.

Invoking it each account would be the same as just typing it in manually on
each account. Wow! Did I overestimate the power of CRM. I figured it
would have the capability of reassigning accounts to different sales reps.
What happens when a new rep is hired?

Brandon,

From the Account list screen, if you select all the accounts on the list,
you can then choose to apply a manual workflow rule to all those accounts
from the Actions menu. You can also chose to assign the selected accounts
to a different rep. So you don't need to do it for each individual record.
Though you would need to scroll through multiple pages.

I would have to do it for individual records because during the migration
from GP to CRM, all account addresses were thrown in the "more addresses"
tab so I can't sort on any account info except the name. VERY POOR DESIGN!

Brandon,

Matt's correct, in that you can 'Apply Rule' to up to 100
accounts at a time. Just FYI, re: your other point about
new sales reps, there is also a feature called 'Reassign
Records' that is designed to handle the case when a new
sales rep is hired. If you open up the 'old' user's
record, you'll find this under the Action menu. It takes
a while to run, in my experience, but this is what they
evidently planned for new users.

However, in my experience, when a new sales rep is hired,
there is usually a territory realignment too, so this is
not the ideal solution.

I agree with you that the ability to run workflow
rules 'in batch' would be a terrific feature. (I'd even
settle for a rule that ran 'on save'...)

How do I assign territories? by lindad

Key point you all may already know (but maybe not ...)
the "territorycode" field that you can affect in an
account is not the same as the Territory Lookup.

You have to add picklist values to the territorycode field
and add it to the Account form. There is also a
territorycode field (picklist) defined for other objects
so you can map this to other objects with mappings to
Account.

Know this doesnt' solve your problem, but it's important
to know this before running your workflow....:)
