We are in an environment with only 20 or so people using
the CRM at once. We're on a Gigabit network, and our CRM
server is a DELL duel Xeon 3.2GHz with 4GB RAM, as is our
SQL server.

The problem is latency. We have big issues of delay when
bringing up contacts, activities - pretty much anything.
Sometimes things come right now, sometimes they take 3-8
seconds. Sometimes they time out.

We really need to solve this issue. I was hoping that
somebody would have some feedback that could help us take
care of this problem.

Thanks!

Without knowing much about your setup I would suggest you first check you
event logs on all the CRM servers such as the web server and SQL server.
Also are you running gigabit to users as well or just betwen servers?

try using the IP address of the web server to connect instead its DNS name.

Traffic between the CRM and SQL servers is very heavy. Try to have a
dedicated link between those two, so not contending with general network
traffic

Have you optimised the disk configuration on SQL eg
transaction log on dedicated disk,
databases on SCSI RAID 5, OS
program files on RAID 1 array

Do you have enabled http-keep.alives and a high connection timeout in the

Our servers do have a direct gigabit connection.

We're looking into the logs now.

We'll also try using the IP; although it'll take a bit of
time to set it up properly.

Thanks!

Yes, but we only have 15-20 people using it. With a
gigabit network and our servers we shouldn't be having
ANY speed issues at all.

I'll look into the drive optimization, but if such a
setup is required for less than two dozen users, I think
the CRM has much bigger problems than people are willing
to acknowledge or admit.

I'll check on the keep alives, but the timeout shouldn't=20
matter. We should never hit it querying contacts or=20
activities of a reasonable number.

There is no secret about SQL -for - CRM hardware requirements. The
recommended SQL 2000 server hardware configuration (hardware SCSI RAID 5
plus hardware RAID5, two controller preferred) has always been publicly
available to anyone who cares to read it

So "people" are have always "acknowledged and admitted" the h/w
requirements.

(BTW the suggestion of a dedicated disk for transaction logs is mine, and
merely normal SQL 2000 best practise, however many users there are).

caveat emptor

I completely agree with your statememts. With 2 users on
a 3.2 Ghz machine with 2GB memory this system is slow.
Even when working "offline" on a dedicated XP 3.2 Ghz
laptop with 1GB memory it is still slow.

The overall architecture seems to have been designed to
take advantage of emerging technologies with little
regard to perfomance.

In the CRM there are no direct SQL queries performed,
eveything goes through a web service, which then in turn
communicates with SQL server.

The web services interpret XML, then dispatch accordingly.

The best analogy I can give is that this system is built
of several interconnected layers of interpretter.

It is certainly not one of the better products that
Microsoft have shipped, and we as a small company have
spent weeks on trying to tailor it, and tune it with
litte success.

Additionally we have had to purchase "add-ons" from c360
which really should not be required if the system offered
an environment suitable for "CRM", after all that is why
we purchased it.

I too have the same problem - It typically takes anywhere from 5 to 15
seconds just to open each and every single item. It shouldn't take 2
minutes just to enter in a simple appointment!!!

Would appreciate any feedback/suggestions...

Bruce

Speed issues with CRM by Barry

Hi Bruce,

It appears that "out-of-the-box" the CRM needs IIS and
the .NET framework to be tuned on your server.

This link on MSDN covers changes you need to make
to "c:\windows\Microsoft .net\framework\v1.1.4322
\CONFIG\machine.config to speed up web services which the
CRM relies on heavily.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?
url=/library/en-us/dnpag/html/scalenetchapt17.asp

This link on MSDN covers lots on .NET framework tuning
issues.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?
url=/library/en-us/dnpag/html/scalenetchapt17.asp

Let me know how you get on with these and see what effect
they have on your response times.

After applying the tuning recommendations in the MSDN
articles, I am seeing a very good performance improvement
from the CRM when using the browser interface.

Note that the same tuning is required on the client PCs
also -- via the machine.config file as the SFO client is
using local web services.

David,

Do your Dell servers have the Broadcom network cards? I have read of some
issues with that network card when it switches to gigabit. In gigabit mode
it actually functions well under 100 Mbps.

What is the speed difference when you bring up CRM locally from the actual
server?
