Hello,

I would like to receive advice regarding Microsoft CRM.

The company that I represent is in negotiations with a partner of Microsoft
about purchasing Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0.

One of our most important needs is to enable our sales and tech.
representatives from abroad to use the system as well. Our reps are currently
using Outlook2003/Exchange2003 using RPC over HTTP. The current version of MS
CRM 3.0 doesnâ??t support RPC over HTTP.

We have been informed that our only option for the time being is to work
using VPN and Terminal Server. We have also been informed that the next
version of MS CRM 4.0 (work name â??Titanâ??), that will be available in the end
of 2007, will support working in CRM from Outlook using RPC over HTTP.

Has anybody heard about this new version of MS CRM, and whether it will
really support RPC over HTTP?

Thanks,

Gregory B.
IT Manager

You have been advised badly

You can access CRM 3.0 through Outlook client over the internet without a
VPN right now . I use it every day (over HTTPS, I presume RPS over HTTPS)

Are you accessing a hosted CRM via HTTPS? If so that is different than what
this person may actually want.

Dear Gregory:

The other option would be the remote sale guys can connect the CRM server
wirelessly over internet using handheld devices or laptops, pull the required
data store it locally & use.

We have suggested for some clients. Please let me know if i can be any
further assistance.

Hi Peter,

Can you use the CRM toolbar butons in outlook over the internet without VPN ?

I can access the CRM Web Client from the internet but when I launch outlook
using RPC over HTTP I receive the following error message "could not load the
CRM functionality...." and the CRM toolbar buttons stay disabled in outlook.

I will appreciate your comments.

Regards,

Javier

All my CRM toolbar buttons work over the Internet. I get no errors. I wonder
what the difference is?

Have you added an entry in control panel - user accounts - for your CRM URL?

I'm curious how you have this working Peter. I'm currently managing a
project to deploy CRM for my company's sales force and was told by our
consulting company that the Outlook client for CRM does not support
connections over HTTPS. I checked it out on Microsoft's website and
even they claim that the only way is to VPN and connect via HTTP. So,
I guess I have 3 questions:

1. What did you do to get HTTPS working via the Outlook Client?
2. Are you using the Laptop or Desktop client or both?
3. How do you add an account for the CRM URL. On my version (I used
Desktop, even though it's a Laptop because I have an administrator
account and don't care for 10 hour synchronizations via my Verizon
Wireless card) the only way to modify the server URL is through the
registry.

I believe that the Desktop license will allow you to do this with some
unsupported artful tapdancing behind the scenes. We have 28 users who are
desktop folks using laptops that travel. VPN has been a pain over the last 3
months for them. A pain in that it can be quirky. So we are going to
explore this option on the Desktop license and see if it works.

Also curious how this is working - I've tried changing the urls to IPs
rather than hostname, I've added sites to local under security but always
fail authentication when prompted to login (use domain\user name )

System Vista Business & Outlook 2007 with the latest CRM Outlook client
compatibility release.

Thanks

Dear Peter,

I've been asking many people wheter it is possible to use MSCRM-addon to
Outlook through HTTPS - and all of them said: "No, it is not possible, MS CRM
3.0 does not allow it".

However, you wrote just something quite opposite - could you explain how
have you done this, please?

Kind regards,
Damian Krol

Sorry - can't help - in this case I am just the end user - how Exchange,
CRM, firewalls etc are configured I just don't know

I just know that I use CRM Outlook client, without VPN, over the internet
and its using https - and it works :)

This does not help me at all :)
Frankly, I've heard MSCRM-addon can just work over HTTP, not HTTPS.
I'm wondering, how your IT-guys have solved this.

I've been searching for such solution over the web but I'm afraid there's
nothing write in this matter.

Would you be so kind and just ask your admins for the explanation, please? :)

Kind rgds,

I'm with Peter.

I too use the laptop client remotely using https and it simply works. It
really honestly does work, no matter what anyone else says.

We already had CRM accessible with the browser using https and when I
installed the laptop client and put the URL into the setup, it came together
with no problems, and I'm not a technical person.

As a result, I never bother going "offline" with the laptop client, because
finding internet access is pretty easy these days.

My guess is that if anyone has got any problems with this it is likely to be
with firewalls, ports or some such thing.

See my blog, and specifically these posts for stuff on this topic:

Thanks, Mike.

I'll tell guys who have installed CRM server and configured clients to think
it over once more. They say (and I have to confirm), that client does not see
the server.

However, Exchange email account is configurated via HTTPS, and I have the
ability to use CRM via web browser, too.

Best regards,
Damian

I was able to access just fine with both Outlook client and web with or
without VPN until applying rollup 2, now I need to have VPN connected to
access either interface.

Anyone have similar experience after rollup 2?

Here is how it works... You have to be able to open up the URL over then
internet with out having to type in your username and password... This means
that the machine you are accessign it from is part of the domain and has the
necesarry credentials to access it across the network. Then you have to add
the Site URL. (You probably want to use the same, and let DNS sort it out but
resolve to the same server whether you are inside or out on the internet.)
But you have to add the site to the "trusted Intranet" Site. then it will not
challenge, and IE6/7 will let you use the logged in user to authenticate with
the CRM server. If you open the URL (for example: https://crm.<mydomain>.com
The site has to come up without typing in the username and password. It will
still work taht way if you ar enot using the Outlook client, and only using
the web interface. But to get it to work in Outlook, YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO
LOG INTO THE CRM USING YOUR WINDOWS LOGGED IN CREDENTIALS....

HTH,

Rick

Re: MS CRM - Outlook/Exchange RPC over HTTP support by BLSnow

I have been researching a solution for accessing MSCRM 3.0 using Outlook 2003
using RPC over HTTP but have yet to find one. I have read many posts on
various website that say it works and works flawlessly but I have yet to find
one that gives direction or instructions on how this is done. I have been
told that it is not supported and at first did not believe that but my
opinion is quickly changing.

I can get outlook to function and function well using RPC over HTTP but I am
unable to access the MS CRM folder structure. Can somebody shed some
technical light on this? Thanks in advance for any assistance that can be
provided

Kindest regards,

B. Snow
