Originating Activity

When recording campaign responses to a mail shot, when you want to select
Originating Activity, there you get to select what type of activity, I have
sent out alot of letters, so there will be a long list of letter records to
choose from, but nothing to differentiate which letter activity is to who. I
added in the column of recipient to the Letter Lookup, but get an error when
i go back to this lookup, so have had to remove it, and no longer get the
error. Surely doing a large mailshot, you want to select the correct letter
activity according to the person who is "interested", but do not seem to be
able to do this.
Am i missing something?
