you only need a functioning active directory domain. You do not need
exchange server to be installed.

Hello Jo,

Active Directy is a must for CRM but don't need to have Exchange Server
Installed. You can install CRM Server with SMTP Services running on Web
server. But for the testing of exchnage client you will have to install the
Exchange Server. You have to login as domain administrator as during
installation of CRM you will have to browse active directory and select an
orgizational unit for CRM Users.

As long as the testing environment setup is concern , If you have 4 machines
available then , Use one of them for domain, one for Exchnage , one machine
for SQL Server and configure one machine as Web Server.
Alternatively you can use 2 machines 1 for SQL and Web and one for Active
Directory and Exchnage. Or install all of the Services on One Machine.
Installation Procedures are availbe on microsft site. If you need any further
help, then speify the problem.

I hope this will be of help to you.
