Do I need to buy Server 2003 CALs for each Licensed CRM user?

If you mean to ask that do you need some kind of license for Windows Server
2003 for each CRM user than no, there is no such thing. You just need to buy
one Microsoft Windows Server 2003 license and install CRM on it with as many
CRM User licenses you want.

If you mean to ask if you need a windows server 2003 licenses for each CRM
user license than no, there is no such thing. You just need one windows
server license and can have multiple CRM user licenses for CRM.

You may contact me directly at my email address if you need any help on this.

Hi uMar,

I think statements about "one SQL server license" or "one Microsoft Windows
Server 2003 license" are a bit misleading as there are no such things.

CRM is no different from any other application using server and database and
the same rules apply:
every user connecting to CRM needs a valid license for both SQL Server and
Windows Server.

External connector model aside, Windows 2003 Server is licensed using server
+ CAL model so you'd need one server license + device/user CAL for .every
CRM user.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licensing/overview.mspx

SQL Server can be licensed either under processor or under server + CAL
model. So you'd need either processor licenses (one for each CPU) or one
server license + device/user CAL for every CRM user. From memory, for one
CPU it makes sense to run with server+CAL model up to about 20-25 users,
after that CPU model is a bit more cost-effective.
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/faq.mspx

To answer the original question, the number of device/user CALs for your
Windows 2003 Server must be equal to or greater than the number of CRM
users. So I can easily see the situation when the additinal server CALs will
be required.

Hope it helps

What if I have users that but work in shifts(night shift and day shift ), but
on the same device? Do I need 2 CALs for each user, or do I need only on CAL
for the device?

For the situation when you have users sharing the equipment, device CALs are
the most appropriate choice. And yes, you only need 1 CAL per device and you
can have as many users as you want using this device.
