I am simply trying to import contacts into CRM 3.0. The Bulk Import function
works fine for Accounts. I used a .TXT file tab-delimited. But Contacts
CONTINUALLY gives me a "Data in Row does not match the import type" message,
even though through the mapping screen, EVERY field matches up. Is there
something really really simple I haven't done? It would be good if you could
import from Outlook, but I realized I had to abandon that immediately. I did
the most logical step of creating contacts manualy, and exporting it to use
as a import "shell". If anyone has imported a large list of contacts, PLEASE
let me know how you did it ;) Thanks!

you need to change this:
Follow the instructions in KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/295626/EN-US/
Change the following registry key to reflect maximum number of bytes in
decimal:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSCRM\maxuploadfilesize

Reset Internet Information Services (IIS): Click Start, Run, type iisreset
and press Enter.

Jakob, thanks for the quick response, but I'm getting this on just ONE
contact ....one or many produce the same result. WHen it brings up the
mapping screen, they ALL look fine. I'm resetting IIS and giving it another
'whirl', so I'll see what flies loose ;). Thanks again for offering your
assistance...;)

I had the same problem the other day. In my case this error was caused
by the Parent Customer field. I attempted to import a bunch of contacts
and link them to their parent accounts (that I imported previously) in
one go. Not a big problem, it seemed, considering that the import
dialog allows you to map Parent Customer field. No matter what I did I
would always get "Data in Row does not match the import type" error.

Out of curiosity I replaced the actual company name in Parent Customer
field with GUID from the corresponding Microsoft CRM account and then
it finally worked! Unfortunatelly, this is totally unusable for import
of large number of Contacts/Accounts so we are now considering our own
import routine using CRM API. Good luck.

Bob

PS. The version we are using is the last CTP from October, I think. I
haven't try the released product yet.

eHi, Alex,
everybody is talking about "Bulk Import" of contacts within 3.0. I need to
simply import outlook contacts into CRM 3.0 Contacts. Could you be so kind
and tell me, where I get the tool you're all talking about ? I have not found
this information untill now.

Thanx a lot
Best regards
Ivan

Sorry, I suppose you are talking about standard import functionality of CRM.
It's clear. Sorry for troubling you.

Cheers

Still seems to be a problem with the released version.
