I have afresh install of SBS2003 and have tried to install CRM. I get the
error message "[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Invalid Instance()).]Invalid
connection" and am unable to continue. I have the Premium version but have
not installed SQL yet. Does anyone know if I have to install SQL first.

Thanks in anticipation

Yes, you're going to need SQL. CRM stores all of the data there.

Thanks for your reply Benjamin. I know SBS has the MSDE installed but I
wondered if the error message meant I needed the full SQL install. If not
have you or anyone lse any ideas on how to get past the error message.

Thanks again

You need the "full SQL" installed (the MSDE is not supported as a CRM
database server)

Hi Dave
MS CRM require full SQL database (not MSDE or SQL 2005 Express). Probably
you have SBS 2003 Standard edition so you cannot install MS CRM.
You must have SBS 2003 Premium edition or Windows 2003 any edition with SQL
2000/2005 Standard/Enterprice (Express and Developer edition are not
supported).
It isn't any workaround to install on MSDE.
Regards.

Thanks for the reply Peter. I have just installed the SQL server anyway as I
wanted to play around with the full text search in Sharepoint. The bad news
is I still get the error message: "[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Invalid
Instance()).]Invalid
connection" at exactly the same point.

Hi Pflis

Thank You for your reply. I have SBS Premium and have now installed SQL
2005. I still get the error message however. The SQL appears to be
functioning correctly as the "Full text search" works on the Sharepoint
services site.

Hi Dave
MS CRM 3.0 require default instance on MS SQL.
Verify if sharepoint is working on MS SQL (by default is working on MSDE or
SQL express) and full SQL is started.
So if you may check is default instance is unused.

Hi Pflis,

I removed the MSDE Sharepoint in "add and remove programs" before I
installed the full SQL program. SQL is started as I have checked it in the
SQL Server Service Manager. One problem I had when installing SQL was at the
poit where 2 logins have to be added. The first was "NT Authority\Network
Service" which added with no problem. The second was "domainname\SBS SP
Admins". When I tried this I got an account not found error. I am not sure if
this could be the problem.

Thanks again for your help

I'm sure that there is a problem with SQL Server.
Can you log to SQL Server ?
Maybe will be faster if you will paste here or somewhere in internet you
application logs from Event Viewer ?

Hi Pflis,

I am new to SQL so am not sure how to logon. The "connect" works in SQL
Server Management Studio. I solved the problem of creating the extra login
and have added that.

Thanks

Hi Dave.

At the MVP Summit, we met with the SBS product group and there was quite a
bit of heated discussion about the SQL work group edition that is bundled wih
SBS 2003 Premium Ed.

Since SQL likes "A lot' of memory and dish I/O it would make sense for an
allowance of adding a member server to the SBS forest (For Free, except the
hardware) and allowing that instance of SQL to be migrated to the Member
server.

In a Verbal format it was agreed that this was a good Idea given that if you
installed CRM or Great Plains on the the server you would have the horse
power to give these applications what they need. Perhap Cougar will be the
answer in your situation. But not withstanding that, it seems certain that
many admins like your self are being forced to become what Mark Minasi calls
"The accidental DBA". That is to say that if you don't start learning some
SQL well then your really out in the cold.
If you install WUS, guess what? Your a DBA. Forefront? The same thing.

Don't forget that the CRM laptop client uses SQL Express as well, and you
will want to learn some osql commands to manage that at the command line.

Welcome to the Dynamics world. If the Dynamics applications were Life forms
we could perhaps call them APP forms.

And what do APP Forms eat? MSSQL!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Curt,

Thank you for your reply.

The irony of this situation is that I am trying to setup a system for
learning and experimental purposes. Unfortunately even though I have a fresh
install of SBS and have followed the SQL installation instructions on the
disc I cannot install CRM.
