Can someone tell me why there is no company name on the contacts form? Seems
very strange to me. What am I missing?

You can add a company name field using the forms customization. However, the
"standard" method would be to create a Parent Account for a contact.

note that a contact also has an addressname field which can be used for a
company name if you are not linking it to an account
