How can Marketing List data be tracked within CRM 1.2? Let's say I have a
list of "candidates." Until Sales contacts them, we don't view them as
Leads. They are Names at this point. How should we enter this data and then
be able to promote to Lead status? Using the Contact record seems to be
asking for headache down the road.

In Microsoft CRM 1.2 these are leads in that they are unqualified
opportunities. When you contact the leads you either qualify them as
opportunities or disqualify them.

Thank you. Page 30 of the User's Guide has a section titled, "Managing
Leads." It says â??Namesâ?? that do not work out are disqualified. Is a â??Nameâ??
a possible solution to what we are looking for? Is it possible to set up a
stage before the Lead stage that uses a record other than a Contact? If so,
where would we set this up?
Page 31 "Working with Leads" states â??Because most customer start at the
Lead stage, â?¦â?? That's why I ask if there is a stage before Leads.

One more comment as part of my last reply. Page 48 of the UGuide says,
"Leads are individuals who have indicated an interest in finding out more
about the products or services offered." Our list of target names simply
meet a profile to justify a cold call. They haven't indicated an interest
although, as the rest of that paragraph states, "They have been identified by
a salesperson as recipients for targeted information through direct e-mail or
other communication activities."
Hit me over the head with a blunt object if I'm making this difficult but
the customer wants it this way.

Actually, you're reading too much into the UG.

As John stated, in the context of CRM, these are Leads. There are other places
where they reference loading purchases mailing lists into CRM as Leads. These
people have not expressed an interest in the company either. They are simply an
unqualified Opportunity. If you are going to pursue these people in the hope of
doing business, then they are Leads as you hope this will "lead" to a sale.

I completely agree Matt. I was posting this from the perspective of my Sales
VP who might be testing me to see if I will step up and say, "No." He also
has e.piphany or some other product experience and maybe there are other
options out there. Agreed. A Lead is a Lead.

Simple solution....just use an existing or new pick list and call it
something like "lead Type" make one of the values "Suspect" or
"marketing list" or something that would denote a difference. Then, in
your views, build the appropriate views based upon the need of the
users....filter for just the records that they need for the various
ways they work.

One of the ways we have dealt with this is I added a picklist and used
values of "contacted" or uncontacted" (the default is uncontacted)so
in effect we have a couple of stages in the "lead" cycle before we
convert qualified leads to account/contac/opportunities or disqualify
them which makes them inactive leads.

What's the difference between lead and suspect? Suspect and prospect? What
is your defintion of qualified opportunities? And unqualified opportunities?
