    - OpenNetCF's Groupbox & VS.NET OpenNetCF.org's Groupbox looks great. But I'm missing how to use it in VS.NET 2003. When you download the zip, it contains six files, a EULA, and five DLLs. I take the one I'm interested in (OpenNETCF.Windows.Forms.GroupBox.dll) and drop it in the project directory. I then right-click on the toolbox and add a .NET component by browsing to that DLL and selecting it.     - C# compiler not enforcing CLS compliance even with CLSCompliantAttribute In writing a custom control, I had put the [assembly: System.CLSCompliantAttribute(true)] in my code and received no errors when building using VStudio.net. When I compiled using the command line, (following MS's steps to be able to use the custom control from toolbox), I got several CLS compliance errors. I placed the attribute just below the last using statement. I also tried moving it to AssemblyInfo.cs (is that the best place anyway?) and still no CLS compliance errors in VStudio.     - How to create modal, SIP-like control? Essentially, we are trying to recreate a modal form on the compact framework. We want to create an application in which two forms will be open at one time, a parent and a floating toolbar. The user must be able to see and use either form without closing the other. The toolbar must be moveable and must float over the parent form. This is similar to the way the SIP works. There are a few issues: 1) how to resize a form? 2) how to keep two forms open and visible at one time? Easy to do in regular .NET, difficult in CF. Any ideas? Is eVC the only option?     - Query persisted DataSet/DataTable - the easy way? I have a combobox bound to a DataView, and I need to get a value from a persisted DataTable using the ComboBox SelectedIndexChanged event (based on the value of the item selected). I am successful in doing so, but I may be doing it the long way around. Currently, I am creating a DataRow Array and reading the value of a specific column in the first row.     - Frame Rates in Games I am in the midst of porting my Personal Java game to C# and the Compact Framework. I'm just starting to get it working, but it's running very slow so far. I'm guessing it's running about 6 frames per second on the Compact Framework whereas I'm getting a good 16-18 frames per second using the Jeode Java runtime on the same device. I'm not very experienced with C#, but I'm using the same drawing concepts that I used in the Java version (double buffering with background thread). Perhaps I need to use a different approach with the Compact Framework? What kind of frame rates have other people achieved? I'm using an iPAQ 3835 @ 200 Mhz. Regards, Drew Tag: CF version Tag: 4459

    - COM port access error using CreateFile() Hi, I'm using a Symbol PDT8037 device with a GPRS modem and am trying to access the modem (which is on COM9) so that I can query/change the band information if it is incorrect. With the GPRS band set correctly (to 1900 MHz), I am able to open up the COM9 port to talk to the SIM chip in my device. However, if I change the band to 900/1800 MHz through GSMDemo (a program provided by Symbol that lets you change GPRS parameters), then after exiting GSMDemo I can no longer open the COM9 port using my code (included below - the GetDevice method is being passed "COM9:" as a parameter). GetLastError() returns error code 55 (ERROR_DEV_NOT_EXIST). Even if I soft reset the device, I am unable to open the COM port again till I go back into GSMDemo and change the band information back to 1900 MHz. With the band set back to 1900 MHz, the code below works just fine.     - Rotating Images I am working on an image viewer application as a learning exercise. Obviously I am making heavy use of the Bitmap and Image classes. In the full framework, there is a method called Image.RotateFlip() that would allow some trivial image manipulation. This method doesn't exist in the Compact Framework. Unfortunately, they also removed the LockBits method that would allow programmers to party on the image bits themselves. The only way I have found in the Compact Framework to rotate an image is by creating a second image of the correct dimensions and then walking over the first image calling GetPixel and then calling SetPixel on the new image. This is just about the most inefficient method of doing anything I have ever witnessed. To rotate a simple 74x124 pixel image on a 400MHz XScale, it takes approx. 1:30 minutes. The time to rotate an image 90 degrees appears to increase exponentially as the image gets larger. Does anybody have a better method of rotating an image with the Compact Framework? If not, then I fear it will be a big flop for the majority of applications, since trivial image manipulation is a fairly common thing. Especially with games! Brian Tag: CF version Tag: 4410

    - Campaign for KeyDown I'm trying to intercept the arrow and return keystrokes with the KeyDown event. Yes, I've tried the McSoft package and it won't work for me. I believe a TextBox and only one or two other controls make the KeyDown event available. For my testing, added a handler to a textbox's KeyDown event. Upon each event, I added the KeyCode to a combo box. I found some interesting results which I am happy to share here. In all tests, I set the focus to the textbox and pressed the Up, Down, Left, Right and Return keys in order. The test results show the KeyCode.ToString results generated from each physical key pressed. Note that in some cases, one human action produced two events (i.e. two keypresses were generated). Test 1: Emulator; clicking the star pad with the mouse Up, F21 Down, F21 Left, F21 Right, F21 Return Test 2: Emulator, clicking the arrow keys on the SIP Up Down Left Right Return Test 3: Emulator, pressing keys on the host computer Up, F20 Down, F20 Left, F20 Right, F20 Return Test 4: Compaq iPaq, tapping keys on the SIP Up Down Left Right Return and a beep Test 5: Compaq iPaq, pressing the star pad Up, F21 Down, F21 Left, F21 Right, F21 F23, Return and a beep And that leads to a few questions: 1) What's with the the F20, F21 and F23 keycodes? What do they signify? It would make some sense if the F## keystroke always preceded the usual keycode (so the software could perhaps handle the star pad differently from the SIP), but it's a real kludge if the F## keystroke follows the usual keycode. 2) Can I get rid of the beep? I tried setting AcceptsReturn both ways on the textbox and that didn't seem to affect the beep. 3) What other controls support KeyDown detection? 4) Design question: I've got a tab control with 4 tab pages. The tab page of interest to me has a bunch of buttons, combo boxes, trackbars, etc. There's also a bunch of combo boxes and list views that are outside the entire tab control. I don't need the SIP for any of these controls. I'd like to use the Up/Down/Return keys from the star pad. What do you think about this approach: * deriving a class ("MyGizmo") from one of the controls that supports KeyDown (probably not the TextBox since it beeps for Return) * instantiating Gizmo on the tab page of interest * setting the Gizmo invisible (or, if it must be visible in order to get focus, then creating a 1-pixel screen representation) * adding a handler to all the other screen controls' GotFocus event to send the focus over to the Gizmo control * adding a handler to the Gizmo KeyDown event; if the tab control's selected tab page is the one I'm interested in, and the keycode is one of my special keycodes, then do whatever needs to be done and mark the keycode as handled Boy, I sure wish I had a form-level KeyPreview....     - Application Memory Usage I noticed that any running .NET window application including .Net Visual Studio, when GUI is not minimized and keped running for long time, the memory useage of its could be high, but, when it is minimized the memory useage will be immedictely drop down. I think this is where .Net garbage collection takes place.     - SDE and network server apps. An issue for the gurus: - How can I debug and test an application (using PocketPC 2003) which exposes a network service on the emulator? For example a simple app using a TCPListener, accepts a connection and dumps data to a listbox. The code was quite easy to write, however... The big problem I have found is getting a device or emulator to be debugged and accessible from my LAN. I imagine I could solve this simply by using my iPaq with a network adapter (say ethernet CF card, wlan) and then use activesync to debug along with having a LAN based IP address on the network to serve to my tcplistener. As a sort of challenge, at the moment my only 2 options are an ipaq 3970 with bluetooth and the PPC2003 emulator. I don't think you can do this at all with the 2002 emulator. Bluetooth is a complete ass (Ipaq 3970 with PPC2003), if I connect to my PC's PAN service and then connect via activesync (either via the cradle or using bluetooth activesync) the PAN connection dies or becomes mute. I did some testing by enumerating the current hostname ip addresses using the Dns class, it seems activesync overrides the PAN IP address with it's own internal IP address or flat out drops the connection. Now I can't claim to be an expert here but I gave up citing bluetooth/pocketpc 2003 connection issues, most likely related to the activesync pass through function (WHICH CAN'T BE DISABLED BTW). Isn't the passthrough is great for outgoing connections but useless for incoming (to device)? Next in line, the emulator in SDE really has me confused, it installs PocketPC2003 targets in VS.NET2003 which almost work fine... Unfortunately, I am fairly sure VS.NET2003/SDE is currently using the 4.1 Emulator.exe to run the CE.NET 4.2 pocketpc 2003 image (why!). This means that the new (4.2) virtualswitch option is not available. The virtualswitch network option allows the emulator to be accessible on my LAN by giving it a LAN accessible IP address, the default alternative is a NAT style adapter (only useful for outgoing originated connections like PIE, and similar to activesync passthrough) subsequently totally useless for my TCPListener service. Anyhow, the virtualswitch function also uses a network plug-in which seems ONLY evc4.0 SP1/SP2 (possibly SDE too) installs into the PC's primary network interface "Virtual PC Emulated Ethernet Switch". I wonder why they didn't use a virtual adapter like widcomm have done in their bluetooth drivers? That would be neat... you could bridge or use ICS or whatever. The PPC2003 emulator from my current EVC4.0 install, doesn't seem to work at the moment although I imagine I just need to remove everything and reinstall. However it does gives me the option for virtualswitch which causes the emulator to have its own LAN accessible IP address. Great in principle and the main thing is I have managed to get it working manually by invoking the emulator myself from the command line. Although I can't seem to get SDE to debug to the manually executed emulator, obviously it needs activesync. I have seen an article which mentions using the emuAScfg.exe but I could not get this to work at all (Any info would be greatly appreciated). I suppose I could setup the partnership with a serial cable... I combed the newsgroups and found other people with similar problems although more complex I guess (some using UDP). However nothing suggests a working solution to this problem, is it just that this sort of thing is "?uncommon?" so far with the compact framework? Conclusively the only options I can think of are: - 1. Give in and use a physical device and a network adapter and activesync over the network. 2. Get the command line invoked emulator to activesync so I can debug (serial or emuascfg.exe). 3. Complain a little that Microsoft needs to fix the SDE integration in VS.NET2003 particularly in regards to the emulator integration for PPC2003. I had a look at the assemblies in the CF folder like ConMan.dll,ConManDataStore.dll... man that is a highly detailed integration! I hope this generates some discussion for people who maybe have run into similar problems. I am still new to the .NET framework and SDE in particular.     - RDA with MSDE? I'm experiencing troubles while using RDA. It's now been three days I try to debug the application but there's nothing to do with it. So my question is, quite basic actually, can I use RDA with an MSDE based DB instead of a classical Sql Server?     - Problem with Application Icon I am having a problem attaching an application icon to a pocket pc application. I have attached a 16x16 icon and a 32x32 icon. Regardless of which icon I use, the PDA (an Ipaq 3835) displays a normal size icon with my icon occupying the upper left 1/4 of the icon and the remainder of the area is garbled. The program is written with Visual Studio .NET 2003 using C# and the compact framework. I have lots of graphics and icons in the program and they all work fine with the exception of the application icon. I even have a listview that I populate with 32x32 icons and they display correctly. Each version of the Compact Framework is released with a different Win32
File Version number (this is a seperate version number from the Assembly
Version, which should be the same across all releases of the Version 1
Compact Framework, including Service Packs).

In order to see what version you have installed, use File Explorer to
navigate to the \Windows directory, and click the file called CGACUTIL.
You will get a message box showing you the Win32 File Version of the
Compact Framework installed on the device.

RTM = 1.0.2268.0
SP1 = 1.0.3111.0
