 - component autoresize on a vga mobile 5 Hello, I'm porting a htc tytn application on a htc x7500 (mobile 5). The difference that makes the application to run badly is the screen. The x7500 has a vga screen and it seems that it tries to resize automatically all the components and all the images. The image in a picturebox is resized if loaded changing the image property compile time, and it's not resized if I load it runtime from a file. Does anybody know why? The code I use to load an image is: Bitmap b = new Bitmap(imagefile); ; Image imm = Image.FromHbitmap(b.GetHbitmap()); And how could I avoid the automatical resize of the panels and the textBox? Is it related to the font size? I would need to manage explicitly this resize or, better, to avoid it at all, at least for my application.  - Application interaction with another application/service/Background I have a project which is a device application (Windows Mobile 6 - Smartphone). In this application i will download some xml(catalog) files from the sever and update the ui and database once in 24hrs. This download,updation of ui and updation of database(sql server ce) takes nearly 3 to 4 mins. To avoid this i want to create service/thread or something else which will be running in the background and do this download process and update the database without poping up the ui. So that when user opens my application he has to just update the ui reading from database. Can anyone please suggest me what i have to use for this functionality? 1)Do i need to create 2 different applicatios and has to communicate between those 2 applications.If so how can i communicate between 2 different applications. 2)Do i need to create one service and have to communicate to my application. If i use a service can i get object of different application. 3)Is there any event trigger application in WM6 so that i can get events and use them. please suggest me.  - Splashscreen problem (partly...) This is quite a strange one... My device is WM6 and I am developing on CF 1. I have written a splashscreen on a new form and call it from form1 like so... public Form1() { this.MinimizeBox = false; splash form = new splash(); form.ShowDialog(); InitializeComponent(); } This sort of works perfect for me on my device (though I actually do get a gap between the splash screen and the program where I can see what was on screen before, though I am not too concerned). I have deployed the app to a WM5 device. I run the app and my splashscreen appears, disappears (as it should) but then the app just doesn't appear, however, if I click the icon again, the app actually starts without the splash screen, which suggests that the app is actually running from first click, just not visible. Any ideas? I have written a .NET CF V2.0 application that supports several languages (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, etc.) and I noticed that there are several language versions of System_SR_XX.CAB files, to support detailed error messages in the specified language, but I was curious to know if there are different language versions of the NETCFv2.wce5.armv4i.cab?  - Stupid ComboBox event problem Hi, I cannot figure out why no ComboBox events are firing in my project. I'm very new to .NET CF programming, so I might be missing something obvious. The event handler for "SelectedIndexChanged" gets fired when I first set the DataSource of the ComboBox, but when I click on the ComboBox in the emulator, no event handlers get called. Out of desparation, I've added handlers to SelectedIndexChanged, KeyPress, KeyDown, LostFocus, and MouseDown, but none of the handler fire.  - Unicode (Hindi Language) support in WM6 Hi, I'm trying to develop a application for Windows Mobile 6 which is unicode based. I'm using unicode for display HINDI language on pocket pc. Is WM6 supports unicode or not? Because when I try to deploy application with a label that contains both hindi and english char. I'm getting only english char and hindi chars are replced by boxex or question marks.  - Native Error after Symbol SMDK 1.6 Had an application to worked just fine debug run mode with the SMDK 1.5 from Symbol. Welp the SMDK 1.6 required removal of the 1.5 and previous SMDKs. After installing the latest greatest form Symbol I can no longer run my application in debug mode. It gets to the splash screen and before it can get to the main screen a error occurs: "A native exception has occurred in EasyIDMobile.exe.  - Visually inheriting from abstract/generic UserControls in CF Hello, I'm using Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 and .NET Compact Framework 2.0. I have a UserControl component for editing rules. Right now I'm using a class which inherits from UserControl and uses a generic type to hold the type of rule that is being edited. Then derived types specify the generic type to say what type of rule they can edit. I like this design because it lets me put some common code in the parent class, and if I try to pass the wrong sort of rule to a UI component I find out at compile-time. Roughly it looks like this: public abstract class Rule { ... } public abstract class GenericRuleControl<T> : UserControl where T : Rule { public abstract void SetRule(T rule); public abstract T GetRule(); // Common code for all inherited types } public class TimeRule : Rule { ... } public class TimeRuleControl : GenericRuleControl<TimeRule> { // ... } I coded this all up and it worked great. Unfortunately the first time I closed and re-opened the project in Visual Studio it stopped working. I found out this is because abstract or generic base classes aren't supported in the designer. I managed to find some instructions for making it work, here: http://www.urbanpotato.net/default.aspx/document/2001 That code works fine in a desktop project, but in a Compact Framework project I get these errors: Error 2 - The type or namespace name 'TypeDescriptionProvider' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Error 5 - The type or namespace name 'TypeDescriptionProviderAttribute' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) And indeed, the documentation for TypeDescriptionProvider says that it is not supported on the Compact Framework.  - Multiple PictureBoxes in User Control Problem I've created a user control that contains multiple PictureBox controls. I only want to display text within these controls so I've overriden Paint and do a DrawString. All PictureBoxes on the user control point to the same Paint function. The problem is that only the first control displayed actually displays anything despite Paint being called for each control. The rest of the controls are all blank. No errors are thrown so I have no idea whats happening.  - Deploying cab files Hi, I have developed an app in CF 1 and created cab files. There are 6 cab files, obviously for different devices. How should I deploy these? Do I just copy the relevant cab file to the device then run it or do I need to create some kind of installer. Apart from looking at my device, how would the general user know which cab file to install? Do I install actually on the device or do I run the installer on the PC and it installs to the device? If I can do it from the PC, is there anyway to automate it? (i.e. my app is a cut down version of a desktop version, I would prefer that somehow, the desktop version would manage the PDA version.) Hi, I am developing an application that requires storing of data, i first started out with using XML and DataSet as my dbase but i figured out i need to run several quiries and return certain data set, which can't be done using XML and that the data might get big by time and loading the whole file in memory will cz problems especially performace. So i decided to try out SQL compact. Here's my problem, if i am using SQL 3.5 to develop my app does my users have to deploy it on their devices, or can i just add the DLL files to my project (or cab file) and would work?  - wceload exit codes Hi, Does anyone know of a reference for wceload exit codes? I've searched for it and saw other people searching for it, but it hasn't been found yet :). Or, if anyone knows what exit code 00004005 means, that would also be great. I'm trying to install some cab files using Pocket PC Installer on a Korean WM6 device and this is the result: Running: \Windows\wceload.exe "\Temp\PPCInstaller\System_SR_ENU_wm.cab" /delete 0 ok, exit code: 00004005. Running: \Windows\wceload.exe "\Temp\PPCInstaller\Setup.CAB" /delete 0 ok, exit code: 00004005. So it happens for a standard Microsoft cab file and for my own setup.cab file. The strange thing is that when I manually install the cab files, so not using the Pocket PC Installer tool, it works fine.  - Embed form into another using SetParent Hi! I'm trying to make one form the child of another using SetParent. I tried CF1.1 on CE4.2 and CF2.0 on CE6.0 but without success. What do I have to do to make a form a child window? On XP I can take two visible forms and call SetParent. I think this is not possible on CE. What are the limitations? I could not find a code sample by now demonstrating SetParent with CF. Is it actually possible with CE? So far I can't find anything that will get it off of the standard 96 DPI. Surely there's a way to modify one of these objects to different DPIs (something like the full framework's Bitmap.SetResolution() method). Am I just missing it? I do a simple select query with one join and sum on field value. This query works good on sql server management studio but if it is executed in SqlCeResultSet i get a error: Expression caused an overflow [,,, Name of function (if known),,] Native Error: 25901 I must do convert(numeric(18,3),sum(value)) as sumValue and everything is ok, but why?  - DLL,MFC,Bitmaps Hi, I have an MFC DLL that reads a file and generates a bitmap which I then need to display in my C# app. This is a CF 1.0 app (so no Graphics.GetDC method unless I use GraphicsEx). I have two plans: Plan A: The C# app passes in the file name and some other parameters to the DLL. Then the app gets the image's width and height from the DLL and (in the C# world) does a new Bitmap (w, h). The app then passes this bitmap back to the DLL and the DLL draws into it. This way, the Bitmap's memory management is done in C# and the DLL is only used to draw into the bitmap, not to create/dispose the bitmap. Plan B: The C# all passes in the filename and some other parameters to the DLL and gets back a bitmap. The DLL would create/dispose the bitmap. Please let me know what you think of these two approaches (or if there is a third). Also, if you can help with the PInvoke stuff that would be appreciated. I read that I can pass a C# Graphics object in as a CDC pointer, but that doesn't seem to work. Also, what would be the cherry on top is if I could force the image to an indexed image to save memory.  - Using window panels instead of windows.forms Hello .Net enthusiasts. I have a problem with a Mobil Application I'm developing on the Windows CE 5 platform. The application will crash eratically without displaying debugging info usually when loading a separate form using show and hide methods. I placed try/catches on all the code blocks I thought would contribute to the crash, but have not solved the problem. I've been reading forums and have come to the conclusion that the entire application should be using one form and multiple windowing panels instead of loading a new form every time. Could this be the problem, or is mine rooted much deeper? I really would like to figure this out, so any insight would help. If I should move all the forms into panels, what would be the best way to go about this as each form is in a separate file. Thank you for reading. P.S.  - Image Strectch using Graphics.DrawImage() hi all, i am writing my own messagebox control, it's composed of 3 parts 1) Top bar 2) Middle Area (resizable) 3) Buttom bar the top and bottom bar sizes doesn't change, but the middle area changes depending on the size of the dialogbox (im my case a form that i resize).  - Button Backcolor property not working even with SP2 installed Hi, I have been trying to get the backcolor property of the button control to work under the .NET compact framework with a custom Windows CE image, but I am having no luck. The problem only seems to occur when running the application on a customised Windows CE image. If I run the application in the Windows CE 5.0 emulator, in Windows XP or on an ARM based Pocket PC 2003 I can successfully change the background colour of a button. However when I run the application on a customised CE 5 or CE6 operating system on X86 based hardware the button doesnâ??t change colour. I have tested the forecolor property of the button control and I can successfully change this colour. I have also tested the radiobutton, and checkbox controls as they both inherit from the same buttonbase class. I can successfully change the background colour of these controls. I have double checked that I have SP1 of VS2005 and SP2 of the .NET Compact framework 2.0 installed on both the development machine and CE image. The CE image reports .NET version 2.0.7045. I would be very grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction with this problem as I am struggling to understand it.  - Suspend mode We have been having a few problems with a customer of ours who has several devices running CE.NET 4.2. There are two distinct problems.1) The device is suspended after being left all night, but pressing the power button does not cause it to come back on. A soft reset will get it going, until it goes into suspend mode again. 2) The device is working normally then if he has a problem printing (say), and resets the device (I know he shouldn't!), the device restarts but there is nothing on the screen. If you tap the screen you hear a click, and if you connect is to a PC via ActiveSync you can see the files on the device, but there is nothing on the screen. I have only been able to cure this by a hard reset - a soft reset does not cure it. The device manufacturer says it is my software (and it probably is). What needs to be loaded in CE.NET to ensure the power button responds, and is there any way my software could have removed it? I have done some work in the past using notifications and I think that it must be that it is not responding to the button press. However I cannot see what I can have done that prevents the screen from being displayed even after a reset. The battery is fully charged and it has happened on more than one device.  - Quick survey: Multiple pages on a form Hi, Just a quick survey to see how you handle having too much information on a form for the pocket device. My current app has a lot of information. In the past (ASP.NET), I have written many panels or user controls and switched panels on and off when required. This is all in one page. This app, I am doing something very similar. I have made the working area a lot larger so that I can design the panels. I set visible to false, then on certain events, I move the panel position and set visible to true. (I have to move position as I have designed them away from the visible section of the screen).  - Confusing VM behavior You have heard from me before on our memory utilization saga - I will try to keep this one short and sweet. To make our issue more reproducable, and to just help me see what going on, I put toghether a utility just to eat memory and see if we can cause our issue to be more easily reproducable by creating external pressure. This utility has a List<byte[]>, and every <configurable time period> it does a List.Add(new byte[configurable size]). It catches exceptions, cuts the <configurable size> in half, and keeps going. Each time it adds a byte[] to the list, it also calls GC.GetTotalBytes(true), then pInvokes to GetGlobalMemory status, and logs: CA = total number of bytes in all arrays in the list PM = available physical memory from call to GetGlobalMemoryStatus VM = available VM in the process slot from call to GetGlobalMemoryStatus GC = bytes allocated by GC after collection, from GC.GetTotalBytes I have noticed two interesting behaviors that I am curious if anyone can explain - first, as CA goes up by X, VM goes down by 2X. Does every managed byte really cost you two bytes of VM? Second - as I said, when the allocation fails, it cuts the allocation size in half, and keeps going. I see VM hit 0, and allocations keep happening. CA and GC keep climbing, PM keeps dropping, and VM stays 0. I have even caught an OOM and kept going. I've been using the Newtonsoft.Json implementation and have been very happy with the performance and ease of use. I've run into a snag now, because I'm using CE5.0 based devices to contact our services. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate good implementation of a Json serializer/deserializer that will work on mobile platforms.  - Help - Referencing/Deploying SQLCE3.1 with VS2008 I recently raised an issue here about how to upgrade my project to VS2008 and retain SQL CE 3.1 rather than upgrade to 3.5. After following what I believe are the correct steps it didn't work as expected. I'll apologise for the length of the posting, but I wanted to provide any information that may be relavant It was suggested that I should upgrade the project and then simply change the reference to the system.data.sqlserverce dll, all made sense. So, I followed these steps : . I installed the 'MS SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Developer SDK' for version 3.1 . Changed the reference in the project to point to 'C:\Program Files \Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.1\SDK\bin \wce500\System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll' that had just been installed. Here is where I noticed something odd, VS displays a version number of 3.0.3600.0 against this reference, but file explorer displays it as 3.0.5300.0 . Rebuilt the project and it's deployment project. The deployment project excludes the sqlce dll's as expected . Taking the SQLCE cabs from the folder 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.1\SDK\bin\wce500\armv4i' that had just been installed, I installed the following ones onto the device, a Symbol MC35 running Windows Mobile 5... sqlce30.dev.ENU.ppc.wce5.armv4i.CAB sqlce30.ppc.wce5.armv4i.CAB sqlce30.repl.ppc.wce5.armv41.CAB . I also installed our application from the cab file that had been created by the deployment project as well as .NET2 that is not installed by default. On starting the application, it takes several minutes before displaying an error screen with the following message... 'File or assembly name 'System.Data.SqlServerCE, Version=3.0.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=3BE235DF1C8D2AD3', or one of it's dependencies, was not found.' I've googled this PKT reference and there is quite a bit about it mainly suggesting the the desktop dll has been used by mistake, this didn't really help me. I looked at the filesystem on the device and could not find a copy of the system.data.sqlserverce.dll in either the application folder or the windows folder The only files that appeared relevant to me were in the windows folder... sqlceca30.dll sqlcecompact30.dll sqceer30EN.dll sqlceoledb30.dll sqlceqp30.dll sqlcese30.dll I had expected to find a copy of system.data.sqlserverce.dll somewhere but couldn't. So, taking the copy of this dll file from the folder 'C: \Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.1\SDK\bin \wce500' I copied it into the application folder and re-ran the application. This time it got a bit further, but I got a 'TypeLoadException' followed by an error message 'Can't find PInvoke DLL 'sqlceme30.dll'. So, back to the sdk files and I found and copied on the missing dll, re-ran the application and voila it works!!! OK, so I got it to work, but why did I have to copy on these two dll's manually, have I missed something somewhere else?  - Problem waking up device... I think I've tried everything... Hi all, I have been for almost 2 days trying everything. I need to wake up the device once the PDA is in idle mode (the user pressed the power button) I tried with SetSystemPowerState,RunAppAtTime and they don't work. The only one that works is using the attached code. The problem is once the device is waken up it will show a Notification dialog. If I change the NotificationAction to something different (the available options are Led,Private,Repeat,sound,Vibrate) it just doesn't wake up. I thought that maybe the device was really awake but the screen was off, but it doesn't, because I did some testing with a timer and writing some text to the screen and it doesn't write any text until I press the Power button again.  - Installer Project - No device-compatible programs available I have written an app for WM6. When I debug it using the any of the Windows Mobile 6 Emulators it runs fine. Same if I debug to a real device. I need to package the app for deployment. I've been through all the various walkthroughs including Christopher Tacke's Deploying .NET Compact Framework 2 Applications with .cab and .msi Files. The .cab and the .msi files build OK but when I try to install to any of the Mobile 6 Emulators I get "There are no device-compatible programs available". If I copy the cab to the device and install it via File Explorer the installation seems to proceed OK but then no program appears on the device.  - Options for communication with the device Hi, I am looking at commincation options. Here are my thoughts so far, your comments would be appreciated. What I need to do is to be able to export from a desktop app and also allow the desktop app to drag (import) from the pocket device. What I would also like to do from the pocket device is to 'push' the data to the desktop app. (I could also have the pocket device pull the data) The data is typically XML files. 1. wifi: I would assume that I would need to have a server of some sort on the pocket device. The desktop app would probably need to poll the network for pocket devices in order to hook up. 2. Bluetooth: I have no ideas as to how I would implement this. Any pointers? 3.  - Cannot deploy or debug with VS2005 or VS2005 This is one bizarre problem. Last week I was working on this project with no problems today I tried to deploy and it said deployed successfully but it was to fast, I checked device and no it did not deploy. After trying to get it going for many hours summary is this. In VS2005 and VS2008 it cannot deploy or debug to any emulator or device (I have few pocket PC available) To make thing more confusing after first try menu Deploy in VS is gone, to get it back you need to close solution ad open it again. Deploy does not return any error it always comes back immediately saying success. Trying to run (F5) will come up with error Unable to start program 'CSIDL_PROGRAM_FILES%\SmartDeviceProject1. Manually copying all files to device and then try to debug does work I tried creating new project same story. I'm trying to get GPS information from a picture by using
the EXIF data. I found this code that retrieves the EXIF properties:

However, it doesn't include the tag_gps_latitude and tag_gps_longitude tags.

Does anybody how I can get those tags?
