    - Networks with no DNS I have written a .net program that runs on a pocketPC that talks wirelessly to a non .net program on a sever though sockets. The program works fine on our network here, but on the customers it gets an exception "No such host is known". I do not think their network has a DNS server. Here is code I use to connect.     - Managed Error - Symbol classes Hi Im referencing a class library provided by Symbol (I have a Symbol WLAN card) and am also coding in VB.NET with the CF Im getting a TypeLoadException when running my app. Ive references the Symbol API (Symbol.dll and Symbol.WirelessLAN.dll) in my project and installed it onto my winCE.net 4.2 device. On a buttons click event ive added the code Dim myWLAN as New Symbol.WirelessLAN.Radi Me.txt_percent.text = myWLAN.Radio.Signal.percent.tostrin but whenever this button is clicked I get the error "A managed TypeLoadException occurred at Application::Run+0xf...     - How to resize PictureBox image Does anyone know how to resize an image in a PictureBox? I have been able to resize an image using Graphics.DrawImage in OnPaint, but CF does not support the CreateGraphics method for a PictureBox. I can select SizeMode in a PictureBox and that handles the different mode requirements that I have, but CF does not support SizeMode for anything but a PictureBox. If I could get the image associated with the Graphics object after I draw it and then pass that to the PictureBox, that would suffice, but I can't seem to find how to do that either.     - How to get path to Templates folder? Is there a reliable culture neutral way to get the path to the built in "Templates" folder? Obviously P/Invoking SHGetSpecialFolderPath won't do the trick because it doesn't return the Templates folder path. I have an app that uses templates and documents similar to pocke word so I want to implement the Pocket Word method of sticking templates to the templates folder and regular documents elsewhere, but I have yet to find a reliable way to determine if a folder is the official Templates folder.     - What to Use? I have a large maintenance system running in paper mills. We are moving towards Pocket PCs for the collection of lubrication and inspection information of the equipment. I am a seasoned VB6 programmer and was wonder what should I use to develop these apps. I know that eVB is free but have heard it is dying and has problems. I have VB.Net standard but It does not appear to have any tools for Pocket PC development. First, is eVB a bad choice, and, what version of VB.net (or visual Studio) would I need to develop for pocket PC's? I have visual studio 6 enterprise.     - GetTotalMemory, GlobalMemoryStatus Hi Hopefully someone can help me clarify some memory issues and in particular the difference between GetTotalMemory & GlobalMemoryStatus... Apparently GetTotalMemory(false) retrieves the number of bytes currently thought to be allocated. I assume the bytes returned reflect only the managed bytes(objects) that *my* managed code has allocated, is that correct? In other words if I have PInvoke calls that allocate memory that would not be included, right? Is there anything else GetTotalMemory excludes that one would assume is included? I observe a large difference between what GetTotalMemory returns and what GlobalMemoryStatus reports (taking in account the memory used by the system. No other apps running). I am guessing this is because the GlobalMemoryStatus includes the JITed code as used memory whereas GetTotalMemory doesn't; is that correct? Still the discrepancy is large so there must be other factors that I am not aware of... For example when GetTotalMemory returns 446KB GlobalMemoryStatus (or indeed the memory control panel or even the remote system info from eVC) shows 9072KB. What extra bytes is it including? It seems even the simplest CF app (8KB exe) consumes over 1MB of memory. Is that right or is there some flaw in my approach? Also GC.Collect affect the results of GetTotalMemory but not the results of GlobalMemoryStatus... is that in line with your observations? Note that when the above results are observed, I then leave the unit/app running for at least 1 hour (in idle mode) and the results remain the same...     - OOM component, OutOfMemoryException Hi I have been experiencing the OOM dialog that CE throws up so I am trying to diagnose where the leak in my app is (assuming there is one)... The dialog pops up with the caption "Program Memory is Low". Then there are options to close a form down or "Convert some Storage Memory to Program Memory...". I understand this is the OOM component... I would like to handle this situation in my code rather than have the OS do it not only because that dialog actually goes beyond our (240x320) screen but because I would rather reset the unit (or restart the app) if a GC.Collect doesn't help at that point... So the questions are: 1. Has anybody else done this before? I understand that I will have remove the OOM component and then call SetOOMEvent (just changing the registry values had no effect)... I think I'll pass it a handle and 0s for the remaining 4 values.. Anybody see a problem with that? 2. Shouldn't I get an OutOfMemoryException when the low memory condition occurs? Replicating a low memory condition (using the memory slider) always results in the OOM dialog coming up and never an OutOfMemoryException.     - Printing Invoices I've gone through every post I could find and have found 3 solutions, but none of them are working for me. The situation: My app will be used by field technicians to print service invoices out in the field. They will be printing to HP printers via IrDA. The problem is that I can't format and print my invoices. The first solution I found was FieldSoftware's PrinterCE tool, but my employer is a small pest control business and can't afford to buy this for me. It would work perfectly, as I could format the invoices properly, but it's not an option for me. The second solution I read about was creating an HTML document and somehow printing that. This would be great if someone could explain to me how I could print an HTML file. I found the HP Mobile Printer SDK, but it doesn't support printing HTML files. It only supports a handful of text/picture files and I don't know if I could even convert my HTML file to a format that the printer SDK could even use. Any ideas on this? The third solutions seems to be using PInvoke. I've never used it before, but I poked around have a general idea of how it works. It sounds like I'm supposed to use some methods in coredll.dll, but I can't figure out which ones. I can't even figure out what methods are in that file. Someone mentioned "dumpbin /all coredll.dll", but when I ran that I got an error that said I was missing mspdb71.dll, which Google knows nothing about. Is there a site somewhere that lists the members I could PInvoke in that file? Is that the file I'm even supposed to be using? Any help would be much appreciated. Now when it's time to close i want the other app to close too. How would i do that?     - Exceptions in exceptions in webservices Hey Cryptic subject, eh... What happens if writing to my logfile fails? What i would like to happen is that i can tell the user to contact me, so that i can take action on the issues. Since the logfile is my only way to see that errors has been generated its very important that i can see the errors. So i have tried to make a try catch block inside the catch in the webservice. That should raise an exception if writing to the log file fails. But even though it probably does that, all i can see on my PDA is the same error as when i just wrote to the logfile without using a try catch for that.     - RAS.Dial + WebRequest -> Error? Dear NG, i need to make a RAS.Dial in my App. But due to some circumstances i also need to make a WebRequest to a page. If i call Ras.Dial and then make the WebRequest, the System tries to make another connection on its own and gives me an Error, saying that it cant establish a connection. If i put the Timeout to 5 Seconds the WebRequest also throws a timeout-exception. I wrote a small app which reproduces this issue and which i put at the end of this post. Please remember to fill in your custom connection, user and passwort for the RAS.Dial. If anyone knows the problem and can tell me how to solve it, i will appreciate it.     - how to create a VB/C# CF helper dll Hi, I program in eVB 3.0 and Pocket PowerBuilder for WinCE devices. I started looking into the CF using VB/C# recently in order to create some a DLL that does some simple things like memory available, battery status, get handheld name, uniques ID, ... I have found many example of how to implement these APIs and have a working VB.net executable. What I would like to do is create a class library (DLL) that would expose these methods to another application. My problem is I don't think I'm doing it properly. I have created a VB.net Class library project, (see below) which compiles fine, and I have created public functions for a couple methods I want exposed. Ideally, I would like to access these methods like a standard API call. I would declare the function as coming from this DLL I wrote with a return of a particalur type. Can this be done? I couldn't find any information on how to explicitly expose the methods other than making their definitions Public. The DLL does not appear to get registered in HKCR to expose the class "Support". Any help would be greatly appreciated.     - can not delete excutable in Pocket PC hi all, We are developing an pocket pc application for months, and we often see a weird bug: since deploying informs to be failed, we try to delete the executable but we can not delete it in pocket pc sometimes, then we have to reset device!!! This event often happen when we stop debugging in VS.NET 1.1 2003, and occur both in device and emulator. Any advice would be very appreciated.     - Enable SIP without having a mainmenu or taskbar Hi @ all, after reading a lot of stuff, I couldn't find a solution. I have an application, written in VB.NET, which needs to run in kiosk mode without any tasbar, main menu or something else. As it is an application, where data has to be entered, I really need a small keyboard, which could be activated if needed. Does anybody know how to split the SIP from being dependent on a menu/taskbar? Does anybody know another possible solution like a keyboard-control?     - Compression, Can It Be Done? hi, What i'm doing is grabbing the image from a picturebox, which is getting stored into a memory stream. The problem with getting the bitmap data this way is i can only get 16bit and 24bit images. This would be fine but i then want to send this data over the internet to a remote pc. It has some API calls in it so I have already #def'd these so they will only apply when running against the CF. With the previous version, I ended up creating new windows forms and then cut and pasting the code from the CF version into the new forms - this was laborious at best and then I ended up with two source bases to fix bugs in etc. If I try to open the CF forms in a windows project, Visual Studio complains alot about the resx files so I assume there is CF specific tags in the form defintions. Building, deploying and debugging the same solution to a CE.NET 4.1 MD40600 device works fine. This device is however USB connected. I have tried several options such as: -uninstalling AS 3.7 and installing 3.5 -out various TCP connection settings -Smart device authentication identification (showed connection problem) -Select Windows CE device CPU None of these seem to work. I start to get desperate since it needs to be deployed and debugged on the PPT8800 since that has a scanner build-in. I have followed about any thread but have come up empty so far.
