    - Windows Mobile app communicating with a Service I was wondering if it is possible to create a Windows Service in C# and then have a Window Mobile app send requests / communicate with that service? What I would like to be able to do is send requests from the Mobile app to the service, the Mobile app would go to wait state, the Service would execute a threaded query or non-query against a non-SQL Server database, then the service returns information back to the Mobile app. If I can get this working, there would be possibly 30 - 40 mobile devices running simultaneously requesting from the service.     - Developing for Windows Mobile 5.0: State of the art Hi! I am starting development for Windows Mobile 5.0. I have received and intalled the "Windows Mobile 5.0 Developer Evaluation Kit" including Visual Studio .NET 2005 Beta 2. I have just received the Windows Mobile 5.0 device and it has not .NET CF 2.0 installed... So I am trying to install the up to date version of .NET CF on my device so that I can start developing. While browsing the web for this up to date version I have been confused by the many versions of the .NET Framework available. I would really appreciate it if someone could clarify the situation for me. I have found that the .NET 2.0 and .NET CF 2.0 final are available. However, as I am using Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 it seems that I can't use these versions, I have to stick to the .NET 2.0 Beta 2 and .NET CF 2.0 beta 2. Is that correct? Finally, I have seen that Visual Studio 2005 Final has been launced on 11/7. I have been through the license of Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 a long ago, and as far as I can remember users must sease using it as soon as the final version is out. I converted some code found on the net from c# to vb and it works very well except for some pid values.     - Which VS.NET 2005 version to download I'm MSDN Universal Subscriber and switched to Team Edition for Developers in order to download the latest VS.NET 2005 version. What a mess the hellish MSDN Subscription is! I can see Professional Edition 2005 with 10/28/2005 release date and Team System Release Candidate with a newer release date. Which version is the latest stable? That is, MS announced few weeks ago that MSDN Universal Subscribers could download VS.NEt 2005 final version while DVD is shipped to subscribers.     - USB event notifications Hello, I'm new to .NET development in general, and I can't seem to find the answers I need anywhere else. Is there a way in the compact framework to detect the insertion/removal of a USB memory stick? I have C# code which needs to inform other modules of these events (specifically flash memory devices; I'm not interested in other USB device insertions). I also need to be able to determine the path to the device (assuming I can still treat it as a regular drive) and perform read/write operations. I've seen this question posted on other groups, but they seem to all have answers based on the use of WMI and the System.Management API of the full .NET framework. Am I right in saying that this doesn't exist for the compact framework? Any answers, links to code samples, other discussions or documentation would be greatly appreciated. The application is connected live to a SQLServer 2000 and when i get a broken connection, It shoud display a message to the user "Network connection lost, Reconnect?"     - VS2005 Remote Tools connectivity issues How do I get the Remote Tools that come with VS-2005 to work with my Custom WinCE emulation image. My emulator is not displayed in the "Select a Windows CE Device" dialog when I lauch Remote Registry Editor. The only custom platform I see is the device image I created but not the emulator one. Note: When I launch eVC++ Remote Tools I can connect to my emulator.     - Emulator Serial I am trying to use the serial port (wm5.0 PPC device, CFV2 serial stuff) on the emulator. I have configured the emulator as follows but get the following results: Emulator COM0 maps to PC COM1 - on opening port I get "The Port 'COM0:' does not exist" Emulator COM2 maps to PC COM1 - on opening port I get "The Port 'COM0:' does not exist" Emulator COM1 maps to PC COM1 - Now I get comms but it seems something in the emulator is already using that port as it is sending various strings to emulator COM1 typically: "+SL_TxIntrEx", which I assume is something to do with ActiveSync on the emulator. this is the line that throws the port does not exists error: Port = New System.IO.Ports.SerialPort("COM2", 9600, IO.Ports.Parity.None, 8, IO.Ports.StopBits.One) Port.Open() I have tried it with and without a colon after COM2.     - Re: New to .netcf2 and ppc dev i might just add that what i'm trying to achieve is a) at any time, only one form is visible in the task manager. i don't want to see multiple forms for my app appear in that list! looks odd! b) to instantiate forms only when required so save on memory and to dispose / delete them when i'm done. i know i'm not doing this right now in Class1 but this is something i can figure out later once i get the exact mechanism figured out....is there a way to delete a form from memory in .netcf? i understand that .netcf does garbage collection when a variable goes out of scope but is there an explicit way of doing this? or am i thinking too much in 'old-school' styled C++ ?     - VS2003 'Add reference' dialog - no assemblies shown in the list Hi all, Somehow VS2003 CF project handling on my PC got broken, the problem seems to be that VS no longer knows where to find the CF assemblies. When creating a new CF project, the References list in the solution explorer is empty and the project won't compile until I add manually the need assemblies from the CompactFrameworkSDK folder. When I open an existing project, created before that problem appeared, I get a bunch of 'cannot find assembly' messages, and again I must manually add the assemblies or explicitly set the assembly search path of the project. Does anyone has an idea how to let VS know where to look for the CF assemblies, e.g. a registry key or a config file option? Reinstalling Visual Studio and the .NET Framework and SDKs does not help - I tried that several times in the last week. Explicitly setting the CF assembly paths is not an option because the projects I work on are redistributed as samples with our company's CF control, and developers that open them later will likely have the CF installed in a different folder... I've this problem: in my application I've develop a custom MessageBox form (larger than the standard CE MessageBox, with big graphics buttons Yes/No, with his own title bar..). When I display it as new instance of the form fmCustomMessageButton, in the taskbar appear a new rectangle, void, without icon or text. That's right because on fmCustomMessageButton costructor I've placed the following code: this.FormBorderStyle = System.Windows.Forms.FormBorderStyle.None; this.MinimizeBox = false; this.MaximizeBox = false; this.ControlBox = false; this.Menu = null; this.Text = String.Empty; this.Icon = null; hoping that can serve to hide the new window from the taskbar, however this doesn't work. If I set the .Parent property of the CustomMessageBox to the Main window reference, it become a child of the main window, and the rectangle hide from the taskbar. However the fmCustomMessageButton is displayed with the .ShowDialog method, because it must suspend the code flow until the user choose a button. The .ShowDialog method seems to disable either the main form, either the CustomMessageBox and I'm not able to click over any button.     - ThreadSafe Query I have Form1 (a normal form) which creates an instance of TestClass (a basic class that is just a class, i.e. doesn't inherit from anything). In TestClass I create a thread and from this thread I raise an event. I have a sub in TestClass that handles this event and obviously this sub cannot safely change any UI elements of Form1, so I would like to create another event in the class that can be handled by the calling form and would be thread safe. I cannot use control.invoke in the TestClass as it is not a control and does not inherit from control.     - opennetcf.net iswireless Hi, I've just installed the opennetcf references and used the networking functions to find my wireless adpater and show me the signal strength. This all worked fine on my device. I've now received my customers device, a different model, but same o/s and version, the only difference is the build number.     - VS2005 R1 Performance Issue vs Beta2 I just installed VS2005 and have noticed that during builds for CompactFramework devices the env. is extremely slow around the PostBuild phase. It sometimes takes 1-2min to build a project. This problem did not exist in the Beta2 release with the same projects and solutions. I have not been able to figure this out.     - New to .netcf2 and ppc dev Hi guys. I'm totally new to this platform (previously on UIQ + Symbian). I have a few burnin questions and I hope this is the right ng to ask them (my apologies otherwise!)... My first priority is to code using C# on .NETCF v2 (WM5) so any answers in that platform would be greatly appreciated. However, I am aware there are limitations and I'm willing to explore a C++ dll that I can call from managed code for other functionality. So here goes: 1. As I understand it, the OS or .netcf can terminate the app when the system is running low on memory. This is similar to Symbian. However, in Symbian, I could trap a certain exit message posted into my app and decide how I want to handle it. One of the ways of handling it is to prevent my app from terminating (in some scenarios, I want this to happen). Is there a similar fashion to achieve this? 2. On the Dopod 900 device, you can close the flip screen. Is there a general mechanism I can setup to watch for messages and see what message gets posted when this happens? I want my app to do certain things when the flip is closed. 3. How do I read resource strings from my resource file?? :( 4. How do I forcefully terminate a phone call? 5. Is there an alarm server available in PocketPC that I can use? E.g. I can post an alarm into the alarm server that says "Expire the alarm at 10:15pm with the following ring tone. Identify my alarm with a GUID number that only my app will recognize so that it won't show up in other apps like Calendar, Clock, Tasks etc." Code snippets would be helpful. :( I'm still struggling with things (only 1 into this!) but I can surely tell you that the learning curve on this platform esp on .NETCF v2 is much easier than Symbian's C++.     - Emulator memory Hello I developed application in NETCF which use large (sdf file has about 15 MB) database on device. I try test it on Pocket PC 2003 Second Edition, but i can't change emulator memory. Default this emeulator has 64 MB of memory. When I launch emulator, it has 28 MB only (Settings->System->Memory). I try to increase memory (in Visual Studio 2003 - Tools->Options->Device Tools->Device, by parameters switch in command line, change settings in registry) but still I have 28 MB memory in emulator. In Windows Mobile my application "understand" that the screen rotation was changed because the system fires a Form_Resize() event, so I can run code to resize the form's controls to the new form size.     - Evaluating Database Technologies Posting both to SQL CE and Compactframework since it is relevant to both. I am responsible for evaluating our future database strategy for a consumer Pocket PC application that currently using CF 1.0 and SQL CE 2.0. I am not terribly enamored with SQL CE 2.0. While it has worked okay and always works *on my devices*, the following are some pain points: Not being able to write the database format on the desktop. Corrupted databases that happen fairly often. Not always able to find a good reason why they get corrupted; again it always works on my devices, not always for the customer. Unhelpful error codes like 28558 failure to create database and no more information or 27750 Cannot load sscemw20.dll or ssceca20.dll is missing or not registered when it. Having to do fancy things that just might fix the errors above. Discovering from the archive of these newsgroups that some of these SQL CE errors are still a mystery to the talented people on these newsgroups and even to microsoft engineers. Finding that the troubleshooting methods involve trying many storage cards and/or a few hard resets, which is just not appropriate to ask an end consumer to do. (remember, it always works on my devices). One option is to move to SQL Mobile and .NET 2.0. This means deprecating Pocket PC 2002 customers, of which we have some. I know there are new/different SQL Server synchronizing features; I don't plan to use synchronization at all in the future. I'd prefer being able to write a CE database file on the desktop to synchronization any day. The new SQLCEResultSet sounds interesting, if it is a replacement for using TableDirect as I have done in one place. If SQL Mobile is more robust, that might be a reason to use it. More important than features for me right now. But I want to hear from others who have some actual experience with it. It may not have had the test of time yet. If not, the other alternative are third party databases for Pocket PC usable through .NET. Feel free to post about some and self promote if you develop one. Besides the robustness mentioned, other important features for a database are image (binary) data type and indexing. Conversion from SQL CE if I am moving away from it is also nice. My environment is: VS2005 RTM, .NET CF 2.0, Windows Mobile 5.0 PPC To get only the DPAPI functionality, I grabbed the ProtectedData.cs and CryptographicException.cs classes from the OpenNETCF SDF 1.4 source tree. The only change I made to the files was to comment out the using declaration for System.Runtime.Seralization in CryptographicException.cs. I create a new C# SmartDevice application project (WM5) and add those two files to the project. I add a using declaration for OpenNETCF.Security.Cryptography in Form1.cs. I add a button to the form, and in the click event of that button I have: string plainText = "Here is some plain text for encryption by DPAPI."; byte[] plainBytes = System.Text.Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes(plainText); byte[] protectedData = ProtectedData.Protect(plainBytes,null,DataProtectionScope.LocalMachine); byte[] unprotectedData = ProtectedData.Unprotect(protectedData,null,DataProtectionScope.LocalMachine); string unprotectedText = Encoding.Unicode.GetString(unprotectedData,0,unprotectedData.Length); It consistently fails on the call to Unprotect(). A CryptographicException is thrown; $exception shows an HRESULT of -2146233088 (0x80131500). I'm trying to track down that HRESULT, but haven't found it yet. For comparison, I created a .NET CF 1.0 project in VS2005 for WM5.0 with the same code, and it works without error. I've searched the archives of this group and the OpenNETCF.org boards, but not turned up anything yet. Any ideas on what difference in the framework is causing this issue? Thanks!
