    - Detecting the Microsoft .NET CF As MSDN says to detect .net cf I must enum values from "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\.NETCompactFramework" (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnnetcomp/html/netcfdepl.asp). What if there are more then one value? How can I detect which one will be used by application. Specifically: I have hp iPAQ with WM 2003 SE and preinstalled .nect cf on it (and seemes like it cannot be removed since it is not displayed in the Remove Programs applet). But I can install .NET CF to the device without any special messages from the .cab file and it will apear in Remove Programs applet. This adds new value to the "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\.NETCompactFramework" registry key. So how can I be sure which one of this installations will be used by application?     - 'System.NotSupportedException' When debugging my application using VS2003 on a CE.NET device this message appears and the breakpoint is InitializeComponent(), which doesn't really help.     - Howto assign a method to an event Hi, I have a Form with a panel which has multiple Text Box Components. I'm trying to find a way for the user to jump between the Text Boxes without using a mouse, or more simplisticly, jump to the next Text Box.     - multiple panels, Send to Back Hi, I am developing a simple CF.NET as a learning exercise. I want to have multiple pages for a user to input basic information, then to save to disk for later processing. Each page will have back and forward buttons, the final page will clear the fields on preceeding pages and put the user back to the first page for a new user. I've tried using multiple forms, since then I've found panels which I'm assuming is the more efficient or better design? How can I be sure that a component such as a Label or a Textbox is attached onto a Panel? I tried to attach a component to my 3rd panel, but when I run the application a component is on the wrong page. I have been right-clicking on the panel and then 'Send to Back' to view other Panels. Since adding a 3rd and 4th Panel, the 'next' button (one on each panel) has stopped navigating to the my next intended panel, instead on the 2nd panel it now jumps to the 4th. I also cannot view one of my earlier panels, and don't know how to Bring to Front as I cannot see it to right click on it.     - SQL-CE on Win CE .net 4.2 Hello *, I have a system with Windows CE .NET version 4.2. Now I need the SQL-CE-application (database "server" and client) I installed the CAB-file from the Visual- Tools 4.0, like I used to on CE 4.1. But unfortunately its not working. The file explorer still dont recognizes SDF-files and when I try to start isql, I get an "isql is not a valid CE-application" (I had to translate this message for you, I have a german system) My system was build with the PlatformBuilder (but not from me), maybe its missing something? It contains two DLLs in the windows-directory, named something like sqlce* and I was told, this should be the SQL-server. But like I said: Its not working. The point is, I have to write an application on this device. In the emulator (CE 4.1) everything is working fine, on the device I get an "TypeLoadException" every time I try to reach the database.     - BitmapEx from Bits I was looking at the BitmapEx, GraphicsEx files in OpenNetCF. They seem to do the job of using native functions for drawing. Is there a way to create a BitmapEx from a byte [] in memory containing jpg bits? In other words, some equivalent to new Bitmap(MemoryStream );? If not is there a suggested way to do it?     - Fragmentation of FAT filesystem on flash disks. I'm have an application that has been running on Intermec 720 terminals with Pocket PC 2000 for 3-4 years now. I store the database and the datafiles that this application generates on a flash disk card. My problem is that this application is now much slower than it was before. We have traced this problem to a very fragmented filesystem. When we defragment the flash disk with StorageTools from SoftWinter the application get's it's speed back. We could of course buy this program for all teriminals we have out in the field. (I think it's 400-500 spread all over Norway). But it's not a very realistic to think that the users of our program will be able to run it them self. So the best solution is to let our program do it.     - .NET CF Install Hi, I am developing a project with VB .Net using Symbol PDT-8100 Pocket PC. In Visual Studio .Net, when I am trying to Debug my project, every time netcf.core.ppc3.arm.cab and System_SR_enu.cab copied to Pocket PC and load again and again. Altuough .Net Compact Framwork installed on it ,Pocket PC did not recognize its installation. And I have an error like â??type load exceptionâ?? when I try to use my application running on Pocket PC.     - Killing a sleeping thread I'm running a keepalive thread on one form in my application to prevent the device from suspending. It works fine except for the way I end the thread. I created a bool that is checked on every iteration of my keepalive method. When I set the bool to true, the thread exits. The only problem is that I have to wait for the thread to stop sleeping.     - "My Company" name The way that I generate the CAB file for the mobile app is to right click on the project and select "Build Cab File" and this works fine. Now if the CAB file is deployed for the 2nd time, after an upgrade, etc, the device asks the question "My Company <app name> is already installed. Re-install?".     - More standby problems I am altering the registry key to change the standby settings, this now works fine, when I look at the settings on the PDA, the PDA appears to have acknowledged the change. In the test case I change it to go into standby (on battery) in 1 minute. The PDA however, does not go into standby after 1 minute but waits for 3 minutes (the previous setting). So I do a SendMessage (see below) which returns a 1, the PDA still takes 3 minutes to go into standby. What am I doing wrong?     - Building Installation Package for CF 2.0 Solution... Am really excited to be working with CF 2.0 and VS 2005!!! With help of many people from this newsgroup, was successfully able migrate large CF 1.1 app to 2.0.     - Formless apps possible? I want to write an app that starts listening to a serial port when launched, but otherwise doesn't present any UI. When certain data is detected on the port I'll popup the first form. The Application.Run() with no args doesn't seem to be supported in CF v1.0. I thought of doing a normal form load in the .Run method, whose Load does an immediate Hide, but is there some more recommended way to design this sort of "formless" (at least at first) app?     - DataGrid ArgumentOutofRange Exception I have a DataGrid in my application that is bound to a custom collection of business objects. The collection inherits from CollectionBase so is bindable. My problem occurs when I remove an item from the collection. After the removal, any time I click on the grid, I get an un-catchable ArgumentOutofRange exception. I tried a few workarounds: 1. Before removing an item from the collection, I set the DataSource of the grid = Nothing. Then I removed the item, set the DataSource back to the collection, and called Refresh. This caused the grid to re-display with the removed item gone, but as soon as I clicked on the grid, I got the exception. 2. I added an IBindingList implementation to my collection and set SupportsChangeNotification to True. I raised the ListChanged event in the Add and RemoveAt methods of the collection. This caused the grid to update correctly without resetting the DataSource, but I still got the exception when clicking on the grid.     - Registry Strangeness I am using : RegSetValueEx(hKeySub, value, 0, KeyType.DWord, New Byte() {0}, 1) on registry value: System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\Timeouts\BattSuspendTimeout to set the "Turn off device if not used for" field to 0 for the battery to prevent the PDA going into standby. This function sucessfully changes the regsitry value to 0 (seen when I look in the eVC++ remote registry editor). When I go into the Settings on the PDA however (menu Start, Settings...), I see the setting to be 5 minutes rather than zero???     - OpenNETCF.Diagnostics in 1.4 I have tried the steps listed in the OpenNETCF forums, but I can't seem to get the eventlog items setup right. From the forums it appears that I will have to multithread the app, no problem, but there aren't any good examples that I have seen for creating an XML (or even text) based eventlog.     - DirectX vs GAPI I am beginning work on a .NET compact framework application that will target Windows Mobile 5.0 and above. The application is 2D graphics intensive and GDI is not really fast enough. We were thinking about using GAPI or DirectX, but that led to other questions. 1) Is GAPI dead now that DirectX is going to be released with Windows Mobile? What I am more worried about is that GAPI will not be hardware accelerated in future products, because all they will worry about is DirectX? 2) Printing - I know the compact platform does not really support printing, but for this project we are required to talk to printers via wirelessly. Yao talks about this in his book, but is there anyway of drawing to a printer dc using GAPI and DirectX?     - Help on debugging application after release Hi all, We have written an application for Windows CE .NET whose data will be very important and cannot be lost. During on-the-road testing, we had a couple of unhandled exceptions occur, and the exception did not happen every time the same operation was carried out, so it is difficult to know why it happened, especially as it was a user relaying the information through someone else to me, and one cannot be sure of the reliability of the information. The problem is that if an unhandheld exception occurs, there is no information about the exception shown. I was thinking of using log files to log exception error messages and types (even though the line number is not accessible in the Compact Framework), whenever an exception occurs. I could enclose try blocks around all SQL operations, as these seem to be a likely place for exceptions to occur. In this case I could also write the SQL statement to the log file, which would do a good job of identifying the possible location of the error. The problem is how to catch the other exceptions. In Visual Basic (which I used to program in) in every function one could put a "On Error Goto ErrHandler" statement at the top, and then at the end put error handling code where code for writing the error details to a log could be put. I suppose that to at least find the function in which the error occurred, I could in every function enclose the code in one big try block, and put the catch at the end, but would this in any way affect performance? Also I feel that this is not good programming style, is this correct? I have not been programming in C# long. Are these the only options open to me? What is the best way to use try blocks to catch exceptions when you want to be able to catch all exceptions and find out where they occurred? I understand that there may be a bug in the code that will only manifest itself when in the complex working environment, but I would feel better about it if I could be relatively sure that the first time an exception occurrs, that I could be reasonably sure about having enough information to fix it. It worries me that we might be in the dark and helpless to effectively fix these problems. Is anyone else in this situation; does anyone know the best way to approach this?     - Conect menu not showing I have a context menu on a grid it works in the WinCE simulator when I right click on it, but does not show when I hold the styles down on the grid, nor does it work on the form. What else should I be doing. I have some code in the GotFocus and currentcell changed but after commenting that out it still does not work.     - Custom Control - how to call another class's validation method I have built a custom control where I now combine the features of both a ComboBox and TextBox for the Compact Framework. One of the features of the TextBox is to validate user input on the TextBox component when it loses focus. Since this custom control can be used by a number of different classes, each class is likely to have a different validation method name. How can I pass the validation method's name to my custom control so that it can run that method inside the custom control when the TextBox component of my custom control loses focus? Further, my TextBox's LostFocus event already calls a event handler inside my custom control to do some other things so I want to be able to call the external validation method from inside that event handler.     - Treeview I have a treeview with 2 Root Nodes. The first node has no children whereas the second node has children. When I click on the "Plus" sign on the second Root Node, it picks up the first Root Nodes information, shows the messagebox for First Node. What can I do to prevent that?     - Installation package What is used to create an installation package for the app? In the dev. environment I've right clicked on the project and selected "Build Cab File" and I have 2 issues: 1. I was hoping it would include the netcf stuff and the sqlce stuff, but it seems not. How is this taken care of then? The people I am doing this for constantly let the devices run down and will have to do a complete re-install after that, netcf and all, nothing I can do about this. 2. If I look at the log file generated with the cab files, there are a whole bunch of warnings, one example "Shortcuts is not using the string %InstallDir%". Hi,

I'm trying to get the sample "Smart Application Updater" from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=8348C96B-CBDB-4609-9A07-2281383B8B0B&displaylang=en
to work.

The File "manifest.xml" is received correctly, the new folder "2.0.0.0" is
created correctly, but when the first file (Atomic.CF.dll) should be
downloaded an error "Error 500: Internal Server Error" occurs.

Has anybody got this sample running without any errors ?? What I'm doing
wrong ?
