Hi,

I'd like to run a C# app (written for the CF) on a device having the
following characteristics and was hoping someone could recommend a device.
All attributes mentioned below are approximate and can vary a little:

-8x6"
-800x1024 pixels (color and portrait mode required)
-WM5, WM6, XP, or Vista (or some other variant) - very flexible here
-CF 1, 2, .... - very flexible here
-WiFi not required
-SD card slot or HD required
-preferably solid state RAM
-1GB RAM would be nice, but I guess with XP 512MB would be fine - on a WM
device only 64MB would be fine.
-slot for adding external HSDPA card or device has built-in HSDPA (required)
-physical keyboard not required

Basically what I'd like to find is something kinda like the UMPC, but with
the 'light-weight' of WM5 or WM6; i.e. instant turn-on/off, etc etc etc.
Any 'Pocket PCs' out there with such a large screen?

Any and all suggestions and recommendations welcome - thanks.

Feel free to send me email: hiltongoldstein...at...mindspring....com [darn
junk email software! :)]

Hilton,
you may be able to get a Dell axim x51v. It has the required screen size
and the features you are looking for. Unfortunately, Dell no longer makes the
device, so you would need to find one on e-bay or maybe the Dell site.

I don't think that there are any WM devices with that screen resolution.
You could find a piece of hardware and build the OS for it yourself (Windows
CE, not Windows Mobile), although instant-on is unlikely to be practical.
You're not going to run this device on battery, right? 512MB of RAM will
mean a *very* short battery life, by comparison with something like a Pocket
PC. You might look at something along the lines of an iMate JasJar/HTC
Universal. It's got a large screen, for a Pocket PC, and halfway decent
battery life.

If those are all real, hard requirements, I'd be pretty surprised if you
can find something with all of them.

Rick,

Thanks for the reply. I do have an X51v. My two uses of it are to test the
app for VGA compatibility and to hook it up t oa monitor for demos. BTW:
Which other PDAs can do this?

The X51v screen is way too small (although slightly larger than the X51
screen). We're looking at an 8x6". For example, the Samsung Q1 screen is
just a little too small and that is 7".

Thanks,

Hilton

There is this, which fits closely to or approaches many of your requirements
(except the 'cheap' one)

That's using one of those 800x480 displays that are primarily used in gaming
applications. We've looked at those before, too. They're nice. If you're
latched onto portrait mode, you'll have to contact the device vendor and see
if you can rotate the display. It's also not quite the size that you were
looking for.

10.4" diagonal displays are pretty common, but there are not a lot of LCDs
with the resolution that you're looking at and the measurements that you
want. Unless you're willing to build your own device, I don't think you're
going to find what you're looking for.

One of our partners has a screen size unit that might be close. I'm not
really familiar with that particular unit. If you want to email me, I'll
put you in touch with someone who can give you more information. It would
be best to let me know how many of these you need, where you're located,
what your price threshold is, etc.

I have one on my desk in front of me, you can definitely rotate the display
to portrait mode.

I can't find any LCD displays of the right size that are even close to the
target resolution. Those WVGA ones are the closest I see and almost the
only ones with a 7" diagonal...
