    - CF Service Packs impacting registry auto start functionality? This is a question I posed to Jon Box, someone some of you might recognize. He then suggested I post my question on this group (which he refers to as "The Newsgroup") which I had been previously unaware of! My problem, in a nutshell, is this: After installing CF SP2 to fix one problem another problem has arisen that I cannot effeciently get around. To go slightly further, the new problem is about the registry loosing the ability to auto-start my application upon soft reset in order to keep the user from interacting with the operating system normally. Now, to go beyond the nutshell, I am trying to develop a Kiosk Mode system for mobile applications and part of its functionality was to add a path to itself in the registry (specifically, the Init key within HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE) so that it would start automatically upon a soft reset. Under Service Pack 1 of the Compact Framework, this method worked wonderfully; the application would start itself even before the Start Menu and the ?desktop' (i.e. the Today Screen) was shown. But there was a problem: the button control did not support KeyDown, KeyPress or KeyUp events which another class of mine that handles key configuration used to handle input from the device's hardware buttons. Thankfully, this issue was solved in the Compact Framework's Service Pack 2; now all controls carry the key events and buttons can receive the focus and still process events from the hardware keys such as Calendar or Tasks (when the messages have been intercepted using the Game API). But another problem cropped up afterward: now the entry into the registry which specifies when my software loads during startup is being completely ignored; our software fails to load at all. I have tried this on the HP iPAQ running Windows Mobile 2003 and on an Intermec i700 running Pocket PC 2002. I have hard reset both of them and noticed that, upon deployment, the program will load but input will cease to work once a button control has received focus but, at this point, the program will load on startup. Then I will install the SP2 patch for the Compact Framework and input will work after a button control has received focus but the program will not load on soft reset. I will then uninstall SP2 and redeploy (the original version of the CF will load during deployment) and the original behavior returns. I am a little curious as to why the Service Pack of the Compact Framework would change the behavior of something which seems to be operating system specific rather than software development specific. I am able to confirm that my edit to the registry is made in both cases; it appears that under SP2 the registry is simply being ignored. Has anyone else had this problem? Are there any other solutions besides HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Init that could help me here? We are aware that we may put the application or a shortcut to it inside the \Windows\Startup folder but, for that to work, the shell must load first and that reveals the start bar to the user (if only for a moment) and that's a drawback we would prefer to avoid.     - Checkbox Word Wrap I am using code to build a Checklist in a Panel and I would like a way to wrap the text of the checkbox if it is wider than the panel. Since I am building the checklist dynamically I can use a Label for the text, which will wrap the text. But I would still need to figure out the correct height based on the font. Would someone point me to where I can either: 1. Wrap the CheckBox text or 2. Figure out the height needed for a Label control which contains a long text and has a fixed width. Thanks!     - Add emulator to device list in Visual Studio 2003 I am using Visual Studio 2003 to write an application for Windows Mobile 2003 platform (or whatever it's called this week). When I started working on this project, I had a "Pocket PC 2003 Emulator" device listed in the "Device Tools" dialog under Tools->Options. I tinkered quite a bit trying to get ActiveSync to work with the Emulator, to resolve some motherboard problems, etc., and to make a long story short, that option is no longer available. I still have the Window Mobile 2003 Emulator available on the machine, and I can lauch it manually, but it does not appear as a debugging option in Visual Studio. Can anyone tell me how I would go about re-adding the 2003 Emulator to the Device list? Where is that information stored? I've looked for it in the XML config files and in the Registry with no luck. I considered reinstalling the Pocket PC 2003 SDK, but I thought I'd ask here first to (hopefully) avoid taking any more steps backward. Thank you for any help. Jon P.S.     - URLEncoding, WebClient, Access->SQLCe, SpecialFolders Hi, In porting a desktop app to the CompactFramework, we're doing OK on compatibility but we do wonder if folks have solutions for some of the missing things we need: 1. We need to post data to a Web site in a URLEncoded fashion. web.HTTPUtility seems missing. How do we do a URLEncode? This must be here somewhere? 2. We need to upload files to a Web server. On the desktop version, we used a modified version of some sample code in Help. The sample code uses the WebClient class which is missing in CF. Ideas? 3. System.Environment.GetFolderPath is used on the desktop app to know where to put user files (GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.LocalApplicationData)) for example. Any idea what we should use instead? 4. What's the easiest way to port an entire Access (.mdb) database to a SQLCe file?     - Datasets and XML/XSD Hi I am using XML to store my datasets. I am using 2 files: "MyXMlFilename.xml" to store the data values (all the rows) and "MyXMlFilename.xsd" to store the schema. I use DataSet.ReadXml(Full path of MyXMlFilename.xml) to read the data and DataSet.ReadXmlSchema(full path of MyXMlFilename.xsd) to read the schema. The schema definition contains Column1 as primary key. Therefore it is expected that when i add a new row into the dataset (using DataSet.Tables[0].AddRow()) with a same Column1 value, it should throw me some exception, but unluckily it is not. Instead it is adding the row with the same value and hence duplication of Column1 values. Where exactly is going wrong? The amusing thing is if I have a single file(MyXMLFileName.Xml) which have both Schema as well as data then it certainly give me an exception, but if I have two different files as I explained above, it doesnt throw exception..     - PowerAwareApp question... Alex, I have a question for you on the PowerAwareApp code you've written. In the WaitForProc method, the last two lines: CloseHanlde(hQueue); CloseHanlde(m_hEvtQuit); Seem to always throw MissingMethodExceptions when exiting the app. Any ideas why? I was thinking that maybe the form was already disposed of at the time, or some other threading-related issue. Second: As you've written it out of the box, it works well for picking up states such as PowerOn. Do you know if it's possible to detect an "OFF_AC" state (such as taking the device out of the cradle)? If not, I can see that there's an unsupported NOTIFICATION_EVENT (with a value of 4) for CeRunAppAtEvent that can handle "on" or "off" AC power. I was thinking if the above weren't possible, I could perhaps use this somehow -- if the app is already running when CeRunAppAtEvent is fired, I know it just brings focus to the application; is it possible to capture a sender or otherwise have the app figure it why it was focused?     - Callback problem... Hi all... I'm having an issue trying to implement a callback. I've been working with Alex F. PowerAwareApp sample. I've modified it so that instead of opening the login form, I raise an event that the parent form can intercept. I can't get it to work (MissingMethodException) but I believe I know the cause, I just don't know how to fix it. In my case, my parent form is VB.NET, and the class is virtually unchanged from Alex's work, except for the addition of the delegate.     - "File Explorer"-like listbox (beginner) I'd really like to create a listbox that is similar to the one in the File Explorer application. It displays an icon in the first column and some text in columns 2 & 3. It should be as wide as the screen unless a vertical scroll bar is visible (then it should be as wide as the screen minus the scroll bar) I'm not even sure that the File Explorer is using a listview, but that's what it seems like. I don't need the extra controls at the top This style is used in many applications so I would assume it is possible without having to write my own custom controls, but I can't seem to figure it out.     - Try / Catch Two quick questions : I'm try to using as many as possibly try/catch clauses however : 1) for many methods (such as DataSet.GetXml) there is no specific exception.     - Application icon not displaying Can anyone tell me why an application's icon would not show? The test pocket pc is an old ipaq 36xx running 2002. I've built an application in C#.NET and deployed it to the application via the visual studio debug deployed. Once on the target test device, the icon I see from file explorer and on the top caption bar is not the one I specified in the build. Instead, its that right cornered folded down thing with smaller squares inside. In the solution properties, I've specified the icon file. That didn't seem to make any difference so I changed the build action to embedded for the icon file and did the stuff necessary to load an embedded resource. using System.Reflection; In the main form's load, I've added this.Icon = new System.Drawing.Icon( Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().GetManifestResourceStream("Pocket_Spider.Spi der.icon") ); Oddly, I'm still getting the wrong icon. I read that the icons are cached and that you have to soft reset the machine to get new icons. Pushed the soft reset button. No change. Obviously, I'm doing something wrong since it can't be this hard to get an application icon working right.     - SQL CE CAB file problem in installer Hi I am newbie to Pocket PC development. I got stuck in one problem of pocket pc deployment. I searched solution for this on almost all newsgroup but unable to get solution I am developing a setup application for pocket pc using .net 2003. I build cab files for my application and added to setup project. In my application I am also using symbols managed lib and SQL CE. I added all cab files of my application, symbols lib and SQL CE for different processor. The installation runs fine and installs specific cab depend on processor of device but only SQL CE giving me problem. When I run my application on device (ARM) it is giving error due to SQL CE and the same application runs fine on sh3 device. I have 2 PDA one is iPAQ ARM processor & other is HP Sh3 processor The above installation works fine with HP sh3 device To avoid this problem I made two installers for these two processor. For HP Sh3 I included only sh3 cab and for iPAQ ARM I included only ARM cab.     - Problem with Whidbey I installed the beta version of Whidbey last week and first made a sample project for smart devices just to see the new features. All did work and I could try any of the features. Thenafter I tried a second project, a web project. And now I can't reload the smart device project anymore. The studio crashes when loading this project. Also creating a new smart device project doesn't work anymore, after some while the project wizzard crashes. Hi There,

My Compact Framework app displays 240 x 180 .gif files on a PocketPC.

On the e800 in normal resolution (240 x 320) the quality of the image
display is conisderably worse than with previous QVGA PPCs (eg e740, iPaq
etc).

I understand this is due to the pixel doubling that is taking place, but
when I tried using and shrinking a 480 x 360 version of the image using
PictureBoxSizeMode.StretchImage it didn't improve the quality much, if at
all.

Is there some trick to restoring the image quality of a .gif file on the
e800 to at least that of its predecessor devices?

Will this problem be improved when the e800 is upgraded to Windows Mobile
2003 (2nd ed) ?
