    - ActiveSync Deployment Problem Hi, I am using a Win 2k domain controller as a development platform. I need active sync to deploy my first CE.net app. I have managed to install Active sync OK except that it cannot detect the CE Device via an InfraRed adapter that is connected via USB. I get the impression from the help that because it is a Win2K domain controller, I need to start 'Routing and Remote Access' I have done this using the 'Manual Configuration' as none of the other options seemed to fit the bill. However still no joy. I know the connection is physically OK because the IRD has an ICON in the system tray which I can use to browse the CE Device.     - Custom actions in deployment Hi! I believe this question has been asked before but I wasn't able to retrieve anything from the archives. I have built a deployment package using the guidelines on MSD http://msdn.microsoft.com/mobility/understanding/articles/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnnetcomp/html/netcfdeployment.asp Now I have to include some custom actions that need to be executed before and after install; before and after uninstall.     - Control position on Pocket_PC vs CE Hello all, I was just curious on how the best way to control the position for controls on Windows CE vs Pocket PC?     - Thread problems! Hi, I did a bit of research and read some articles (mostly from the msdn) about threading in dotnet cf. When the user is viewing records, the most useful data is loaded onto the first screen then the app kicks off background threads which load the rest of the information located on other forms so records can be scrolled faster. I am using the code below to create the threads: Dim f1starter As ThreadStart = New ThreadStart(AddressOf func1) Dim c As Thread = New Thread(f1starter) c.Start() Dim f2starter As ThreadStart = New ThreadStart(AddressOf func2) Dim b As Thread = New Thread(f2starter) b.Start() My only problem with this method, or atleast that i can see, is that if the user clicks 'next' a few times quickly so the threads havent finished, new threads will be started while the other ones are going so it will eventually cause a backlog of threads.     - How do you upgrade the CF to SP2 on the Development computer? I always get this message in the build log when running my device app: "Files in the package 'netcf.core.ppc3.x86.cab' are more recent on the device than on the development computer. Consider upgrading to the latest version." Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to upgrade the dev box. From what I can tell, the CF 1.0 SP2 Installer only searches for and upgrades mobile devices.     - Application.DoEvents() inside control's event handler? I've a closed-source .net system library which is a wrapper class around a native system dll. This .net library contains of one class with serveral public static methods for playing the buzzer, setting cpu speed, enabling/disabling the keypad and so on. Calling functions of this library inside control's event handlers (like OnLoad, OnGotFoucs, ...) sometimes causes problems. Deeper investigations (using the ildasm tool) revealed, that each and every library method calls the Application.DoEvents() method just before returning to the caller. Has someone an assumption why calling Application.DoEvents() inside control's event handler causes problems? Could there be a problem with the order the windows messages are processed?     - GPRS and http Hi I posted on this last week so apologies for bringing it up again but so far after having been put on the right track (Thanks Alex F) I have found no further resources and am a bit dumbfounded. Can someone explain in (very!) simple language the steps I need to take to connect to a web server using an external GPRS modem in order that I may use HttpWebRequest. Also what each step does for me for example AT commands to....., RAS for..... Connection Manager for....     - Is this really so difficult? Hi I don't use .NetCF myself but have someone working for me developing a PPC app using C#. To cut a long story short the spec is for different coloured command buttons to be used rather than the default grey background, but the developer (who otherwise seems pretty good) is resisting this saying it will be a lot of work as .NetCF doesn't provide this capability natively. With PC-based languages I work with, changing the backcolor is easy peasy, either by subclassing or just setting a backcolor property. So the question, is this _really_ so difficult in .NetCF?     - Cannot connect using GPRS and System.Data.SQLClient to remote SQL Server Hello I am developing a Pocket PC (XDA 2 - Windows Mobile 2003) application that needs to connect to a remote SQL Server 2000 database via GPRS. I am hosting a test database myself so have full control over the environment. The desktop machine currently has SQL Server 2000 (mixed mode authentication) and IIS with SQL Server 2000 CE Agent installed and all the latest service packs. The problem I am having is that I cannot connect to the remote database using System.Data.SQLClient namespace when connected via GPRS. I can use SQLClient happily when connected to the desktop machine via Activesync ? even if the desktop SQL Server does not have SQL Server CE Agent installed. However if I try the same code to connect via GPRS it refuses to connect. I can however connect via GPRS using RDA, if SQL Server CE Agent is installed and setup, but I was hoping to use the added flexibility of the SQLClient namespace. I've read that SQLClient only works in fully connected scenarios. Does this mean that it only works through Activesync?     - Managing db connections on the device I have a singleton class in my data layer that opens a SQL CE db connection and assigns the connection to a member variable. This way I can open the connection only once in the application and avoid having to close and re-open it. In my data layer I have a Customers class that is derived from a BaseTable class. The BaseTable class has a DBConn property that calls a GetInstance of the connection singleton class and returns the reference to the open connection. The question I have is: have I created any conflicts with the garbage collector or am I mismanaging connection resources? In short, is my approach reasonable here, any gotchas I haven't seen?     - How to overcome background color related issues in asp.net - listbox on CE based browsers Hello Gurus, I am into a new arena of Windows CE/embedded XP. While launching an asp.net application into Window CE4.2 IE browser, I got into a problem with background of listbox. Though I noticed from books that background color property is not available for CE.net for .net controls, I wonder how it impacts on IE browser. I am still under assumption , it should not impact, since the web controls are flushed into IE based controls, and not Winforms. This example illustrate it further. <asp:listbox id="lstSample" runat="server" Width="400px" Height="310px" BackColor="SaddleBrown"></asp:listbox> In the Windows CE - IE browser, it gives two different behaviour. 1) If there are no contents in listbox, the background is colored with saddlebrown, which is good. 2) If there are some items in listbox, the background is half-colored white(one having contents), and other half with saddle brown.     - Strange RAS/WebService problem We have developed a VB.net application for Pocket PC devices, which download data from a VB.net webservice. We are currently implementing the RAS dial-up functionality (using the Sapphire libraries). On a test device (a Symbol) with a built-in modem, this works fine. The connection is made, and the data is downloaded from the webservice. However, on the actual device (an intermec 700c), which dials via a Siemens MC35 modem, we get a WebException on the call to the webservice, even though the connection is made successfully. Apart from using different hardware, the only difference is that the Symbol modem requires the extra modem dial-string command of +GCI=FD in the dial up connection, to set the region to the UK. If we try this on the Siemens modem, we don't even get a dial tone. Has anybody used this type of modem, or can tell me the correct dial-string commands, or has any idea why this should make a difference to a web service call? Thanks, Ian.     - Optimizing for speed Due to time constraint, my last project (first one in VB.NET for us, I might add) was done 'quickly' rather that right, meaning that it is 'good enough' for the client but not the kind of project one feels proud of after delivery. I happen to have some spare time on my hands which I plan to spend optimizing the whole thing just to improve myself. One of the things I know we didn't do right, simple as it is, is the display of SQL.CE based data on grids. We just execute a query, grab all records, put them in rows and display the grid - slow as hell as you can easily guess. Given you have the data in one or several tables, what is the fastest way to display it on a grid? Fastest as in 'fastest availabity to the user', so retrieving records as needed by user interaction is fine. This is actually my first idea. Also, suppose you need one of the fields from the query not for display but for something else (i.e. you can't just feed the results to the datagrid, even if it's possible to do so, which I'm not sure). I keep getting this message: Socket Exception: No such host is known The ppc is connected to the local network through an access point it gets an ip, it can browse the web, and can ping my computer.     - HP Mobile printing : System.MissingMethodException' exception I am trying to provide printing capability using HP Mobile Printing SDK from VS.net 2003. This SDK available to people who submit a business case proposal. Let me explain what is happening. It comes with a dll into which the code makes P/Invoke calls for providing printing facilities. The dll is made part of the project and set to content so that it is moved to the PDA when it is diployed. When I run the application on the PDA it is raising this 'System.MissingMethodException' exception' when we try to call one of the methods that they say exists in the dll. In a FAQ on HP's web site, they say the following: ********** Q: I've added 'mobile printing' to my application. Now, when I click the 'Print' button, I get a 'Missing Method' exception. How do I fix this? A: If you have followed the procedure correctly then the way you are launching the application may be causing the problem. The print application needs mPrintWrapper.dll in its path. If you are using a shortcut or a program menu to launch the application then make sure that the path is correctly set so that mPrintWrapper.dll (and CSMobilePrintClassLibrary.dll or equivalent library if you are developing VB print solution) is in application's path. *********** I am not using a short cut and the dll is copied into the directory where the exe is installed. My question is, how and where you set the path so that it can find the dll. Does any body have any idea about this. Your comments are appreciated.     - Control names in VB Conpact Framework I'm try to develop an easy way to get a complete list of all form names, their control names and the controls text/caption properties as a starting point for an internationalization project on a fairly large project. It looked like it could just put a call to a module level sub and passing Me in all the Form.New's and then in to mod level sub enumerate the controls on the form and write them to log file. Although I can get the control type and there is a Form.Name and Control.Name property, the Name properties are not supported in Dot Net. Is there any way to get a form name or control name out of compact framework? I am taking this approach because we have fairly large project which will be internationlized to several languages and I wanted to develop a means to provide the ability for end users to modify translations instead of using a resource file. I take this approach in all my desktop code and it works great and then end user's love being able to do their own translations. I switched from "coredll" to "kernel32", replaced "UIO1:" with "\\\\.\\Ndisuio", read the adapter name "{461AC549-2458-42D5-8829-B29952667DB9}" of the WLAN card, switched FileAccess.All to Read || Write (What value is it? 0xC0000000 or 0x00000003?)... and DeviceIoControl returns False with "error: cannot obtain value". Is it at least possible to get it to work under XP? Sorry for posting off topic here, but you know the source code.     - Silent Install Hi, I know this topic has been discussed here before but I am having difficulty achieving a totally silent , promptless install. Using C# I would like to run an install without any user interaction at all. I am using wceload to run a cab file. The code is as follows: ProcessInfo pi = new ProcessInfo(); if ( CreateProcess("\\Windows\\wceload.exe", TEMP_FILE, pi) ) This runs fine. In addition I programmatically set the relevant Instl registry key to 0 to disable the dialog box informing me that the application is already installed. This works OK. However I cannot disable the dialog boxes asking me do I want to replace the already existing files with those newly extracted from the cab file. I have been trying to use the /nui switch but have been unsuccessful in getting it to work. Does this switch actually work in the described manner or perhaps I am implementing it incorrectly ? I've written functions that preload all images an then show the log in, but my problem is, that the form is displayed even if not all images are completely loaded. I have installed sp2 for the .net compact framework and my webservice ceased
to function. I'm using windows xp sp2, pocket pc 2003 with sp2.
I've tried the pocket taskvision sample and the problem is the same, i get
always a webexception. If i reset the emulator and run pocket taskvision
without sp2 everything works fine...

It's a sp2 bug or with this new version i need to do something more for the
webservices to work ?
I'm instaling the sp2 on the emulator by running the file
netcf.all.wce4.X86.cab, and the new changes are visible( for exemple the
buttons expose the backcolor and the forecolor property)
