    - .NET CF vs Java Hi guys, I've been searching the web for a while looking for some simple answers, and I thought that maybe you could help me fill in some blanks. My current goal is to develop a solution with a single code base that could ideally be used across multiple platforms.. The platforms I want to look at are: -Windows Mobile -Blackberrys -Palm OS (maybe) So my question to you is. Are there plans to make the .NET CF available on these other operating systems (eventually). I heard a rumor that palm os was licensing something with the .net cf, but whether or not it's true i don't know. Also. Do you know if the java environment can be run on windows mobile devices.     - Emulating Delegate.Target and Delegate.Method Hi, We at db4objects[1] are working on the concept we call "Native Queries"[2]. Our native queries implementation allows database queries to be expressed in the same language the rest of the program is expressed, for instance: // Get all the customers from Brazil IList<Customer> customers = db.Query<Customer>(delegate(Customer c) { return c.Address.Country == "Brazil"; }); The Query<T> method analyzes the bytecode of the received delegate creating a query that can be effectively executed against the underlying oodb engine. When running on .net 2.0 framework we can simply use the Delegate.Method property to get a hold of the method the delegate points to and thus access its bytecode. Unfortunately such a property is not available on the compact framework. The question is, would there be any way to get a hold of the MethodInfo instance or method metadata token from the delegate instance?     - Connecting to device in VS2005 beta Hi, I'm trying to connect to a WiNCE emulator image, i've installed the SDK. In VS2005 Beta 2 ->Tools->Options->Device Tools-> when i hit Devices i get an error that Visual Studio has encountered an error and needs to close. I have my emulator and PB5.0 running. I couldn't connect also when i hit Tools-> Connect to device it comes back saying device is not ready. I have AS4.0 installed. In Setup project I made window, where user can choose what he want to install (for example: application, data files, docs,...etc). I put application file in one CAB and data files in other. I made 2 ini files for CEAppMgr but it install 2 separate applications :-( (In the same folder but when I try uninstall my app there are two positions and I have to uninstall both of them :-( ) Is it possible to make msi file with "What do you want to install" dialog? Today I've installed the new VS2005 Standard environment, with ActiveSync 4.1 and I want to try test the new CF 2.0 on my embedded device. I'm been able to deploy the "Hello world" application in a WM2005 Pocket PC, after installed the "Windows Mobile 5.0 PocketPC SDK" from Microsoft site. I'm been able to run the same project on a WM2003 PocketPC device too. However, I'm not able to find the "Windows CE 5.0" emulator in VS2005, but I can start a new "Windows CE 5.0/Device application" project that display a typical 640x480 CE form in the VS2005 environment. Where I can test this project if I've no a WinCE 5.0 embedded device connected via ActiveSync? I've got a WinCE 4.2 embedded device, based on a x86 image, and I'm triying to install the CF 2.0, but in C:\Programmi\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2005\SmartDevices\SDK\CompactFramework\2.0\v2.0\WindowsCE\wce400 I can find only the ARM version of CF 2.0. In C:\Programmi\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2005\SmartDevices\SDK\CompactFramework\2.0\v2.0\WindowsCE\wce500 I can find all the releases, including x86, but I can't install it in a WinCE 4.2 environment. If I try deploy my project using "Windows CE 5.0 Device" via TCP/IP VS2005 start deploying all the CF 2.0 dlls that he finds in C:\Programmi\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2005\SmartDevices\SDK\CompactFramework\2.0\v2.0\WindowsCE, but then hangs with error: "Unable to start program '%CSIDL_PROGRAM_FILES%\DeviceApplication1\DeviceApplication1.exe Unable to load the CLR.     - transfer data between WinCE device and Network we are using Symbol barcode scanner devices to collect data that needs to get back into our company database. these are WinCE 4.2 devices and are conneted to our network via wireless. the piece i am looking for assistance on is how best to transfer files between the WinCE devices and our Network via wireless. i had used RAPI and ActiveSymc in the past. but this is not possible to use via wireless connection so i am now seeking another mechanism. plus, the users will need to transfer their data at times when a hard wired connection will not be possible. i am finding that i will need to either: 1. write code to utilize a web service. or 2. setup a FTP server and write code to transfer files utilizing FTP serevices. or 3. write code to run on a server that will listen for a call from our client app on the WinCE device and then transfer files using sockets. or 4. go with something like SQL Server and then i can make my calls from WinCE to the database server and let it handle data transfers. it is unlikely that we will go this route. are these 4 options valid? are there others which i am ocverlooking? are there any available 3rd party tools that might handle most of this for us? coding is done in VB.Net using VisualStudio 2003. my uncertainty is how exactly to write the code to establish the connection between a WinCE device and one of our netwrok servers(or even my desktop development pc)? can anyone offer any help or a code sample that shows how to do this? thanks for any help you can offer.     - probably simple newbie question - can't find answer! I'm new to CE - old vb6 programmer; some .Net, but mostly asp.net. I'm writing a simple program for a handheld computer (scanner). I am using VS 2003 .NET Compact Framework - smart device application â?? Windows CE format. I am programming for a Psion Teklogix WorkAboutPro handheld device which has a full keyboard. It does not support pocket pc, but it does use windows ce.net 4.1. I already have a huge program (vb6) in production (automobile processing plant) with these units. I did not have to deal with windows ce for the first set of programs as I was using remote desktop to have the unit login to a windows server, and there was no program on the unit itself . The customer has now asked for a "store it forward" program to be used when they are out of range of the wireless access points, so I now am having to actually write and deploy directly to the device. It is quite an experience trying to program this unit. When I hit the tab or enter key, nothing happens to move to the next control. I'm suspecting that this is the expected behavior, but I haven't been able to figure out how to move to the next control, say after a scan completes, or the user enters something from the keyboard in the 1st control. In regular vb.net, the cursor moves to the next field when the user presses a tab key. In regular vb.net, tab will move to the next control, but not in the compact framework. I have set the 2 textbox controls to accepts enter and accepts tab, but still nothing happens when I hit enter or tab. I've been looking for an answer, but have not found one yet in the old posts.     - #NETCF_AGL_BASE Strangeness with Multiple Threads, Dwindling Memory Can anyone explain to me what #NETCF_AGL_BASE windows are and when they are created? I have a very weird (and urgent) problem going on in my application and I'm running out of debugging ideas. My application spawns a number of threads on startup, each of them starts up various services. The strange thing is that tons of these NETCF_AGL_BASE windows end up getting created (and never destroyed) as my application runs. The windows are always located at (-2000, -2000) and are of size (200, 200). Nowhere in my code do I specify anything like this, which makes me think that its something that CF or Windows Mobile is doing under the hood. Now, the problem with this whole issue is that eventually my device runs out of memory because of all these invisible windows that are created. I am wondering if the compact framework is spawning windows to handle the threads, then never destroying them. Another possibility is that compact framework is working just fine and somewhere I am getting tripped up in the closing of the threads. In any case, does anyone know anything about these mysterious 200,200 windows that *seem* to be created in response to thread creation. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks!     - Change project type in Visual Studio ? Hello, I have a PocketPC application. Now I have added a new project which contains a new class. If I start the application on the PPC I got a lot of trouble using Threads in this new class. I get a MethodeMissingException. The reason was, that the new added project is project type ".NET" and not "Pocket PC". With the configuration manager I can't change the type to "Pocket PC". So my exception comes from the wrong System.dll. It seems if I add a new project to an Pocket PC solution Visual Studio always adds the project as ".NET".     - call a web service I am building a wireless application that runs in a window CE environment. The wireless application will pass the barcode information to a web service. It take a while for the wireless client to get back the result from the web service. I also create a window application that has the same logic as the wireless application and calls the same web service application. The window application get the result back for the web service very quick. So the bottleneck is the call between the wireless application and the web service.     - Network connection for Windows Mobile 5.0 Hi, We're in the process of building a Windows Mobile 5.0 app, for either SmartPhone or PocketPC. I have VS2005, the RTM 50727 build, along with the two SDKs for WM 5.0 installed. I've installed ActiceSync 4.0. I'm a long-time .NET developer, however, I'm new to mobile device programming. We're sort of in the "Hello World" mode of the app right now, and I have some basic networking questions about how the device connects to the network. We're trying to call a web service from the device app and display the results. I've been able to start the device app in the VS debugger, which in turn launches the correct device emulator. At this point I need to manually start up the Device Emulator Manager tool and "connect" and "cradle" the device from inside the tool. When the device is cradled, ActiceSync wakes up and successfully connects to the device. At this point everything is great, the device can browse the internet and call our webservice just fine. The device must be using the network connection on the desktop PC by passing the info through ActiveSync. A couple of questions about this: 1. Is this the preferred technique (by using ActiveSync) to get a network connection inside of an emulator? I don't remember having to use ActiveSync when we tried this a few months ago with VS2003 and the SmartPhone 2003 SDK, so I think there must be a simple way to get this done. 2. Is there a way to fully automate the process of conecting to ActiveSync, rather than having to manually "connect" and then to manually "cradle" from the Device Emulator Manager?     - Pocket PC connection to SQL Server Hello, I'm writing a PPC application which needs to connect to an instance of SQL Server if the connection is available. I can check that the PPC has network access by using the CFNET IPAddress class, and I could even check the PPC can see a web server by using HttpWebRequest or something, however I can't find a way to check to see if the IP Address/machine name I specify in my server connection string is actually available or not. I was hoping that I could simply set the timeout in the connection string, but that doesn't appear to have any effect, and the PPC simply hangs when it tries to do a SQLConnection.Open if the IP address is non-accessible (although it correctly accesses it if the server is found). The problem is, that I can't rely on the fact the PPC is connected to a network, or can see a web site. It's possible the SQL Server it's going to try to connect to is in a private (10.x.x.x) network, and if the user moves between wi-fi hotspots, they'll only be able to connect to the server if they're connected to the correct network. A "ping", while not ideal, would at least be one solution. Or I could try to manually open a Socket to SQL, just to see if it works? Any ideas? Thanks, A. Tag: LIstDictionary index Tag: 60709

    - CF install fails I'm new at CF, but having just attended a session about it at the UK VS2005 launch event I thought I would give it a go. In the talk the speaker said that the current Compact Framework 2.0 install might fail, and indeed that is the case. I get the message "Application Manager cannot install this application on your mobile due to an invalid setup file. Reinstall and try again." I have an O2 XDA Exec, which for the benefit of non-Uk readers is a branded HTC Universal so I have Windows Mobile 5.0. Anybody have any idea what the status of this is, or whether there is a workaround?     - Running the same executable on both windows CE and "normal" windows platforms Hi, I going to develop a GUI application that will run on windows CE primarily but it should also be executed on "normal" windows platforms. My question is therefore if it is possible to delevop a GUI application with Compact Framework (using a Smart Device project) and then run that executable on a "normal" windows platform? Or do I have to make another project using the same code for "normal" windows or isn't even that possible? I have found a course homepage that run a very simple GUI application made for Pocket PC in windows XP.     - Control not releasing focus on SmartPhone I've written a custom control in C# for the SmartPhone. After the control receives focus, it will not release focus when I press the UP or DOWN arrows, thus focus is stuck on my control. This happens even on the most basic control possible (a control that just draws a rectangle when focused). What must I do to fix this?     - Init SQL Server Reconciler has failed I am moving an app that uses merge replication from the development environment to production. During synchronization I am getting the error "Initializing SQL Server Reconciler has failed." I tried re-registering the replication provider dlls (sscerp20.dll, and sscesa20.dll) as per instructions from artical KB814853 to no avail. I know that my client can hit the url of replication dlls because it can hit the url of the CETesting.htm page that resides in the same directory. Any ideas what else might be the problem?     - DateTimePicker conversion to UTC problem on CF 2.0 Hi, I have encountered a problem where if I have a DateTime object that contains local time, when I use it to set the Value property of a DateTimePicker, it is being converted to UTC time before it is displayed in the DateTimePicker. Has anyone else seen this problem or am I missing something blatantly obvious here? The easiest way to produce this problem is to create a DateTimePicker with a Format of "Time" (so it is easier to see the adjustment occuring).
