    - Flaky behavior on AXIM I have an app which uses .NET Web Services to retrieve data and store it locally on the PPC. It's working well on a Compaq IPAQ 3650. When I try to run it on my Dell AXIM X5 (PPC 2003), it seems to break down unpredictably, with everything from Web errors to stack overflows.     - Two Quick Questions - Tab Key and Radio/Check Box Controls 1) It appears that trapping of the "Tab" keyboard key is not supported in any of a form's key events (i.e. KeyDown and KeyPress). Is there any way to override this behavior to trap for the "Tab" key being pressed? 2) When a radio button or check box has focus, I want to display a visual cue to the user for which control has the focus. Is there a way to set the color of the font for a check box or radio button control? If not, could I subclass it somehow and change the color myself? Thanks!     - Problem - PPC2002 v WMforPPC2003 Has anyone experienced anything like this, or have an insight either into the cause or a workaround? The Structure of my Application is : Using VB.Net CF and the Windows CE Api for the Functions FindWindow and SendMessage AppA occupies a portion of the screen AppB occupies a different portion of the screen AppX has no form displayed but is running a background thread monitoring StatusA and StatusB If StatusA occurs, AppX uses FindWindow and SendMessage to close AppA If StatusB occurs ditto for AppB This works perfectly with PPC2002 even if the current active Application is something else entirely... Contacts or whatever But with WMforPPC2003 If for example StatusA occurs whilst AppA is not the current active application (e.g. AppB is active or I have loaded a single application on top) it appears to receive the message to close but leaves it's image in the portion of the (Today) screen it occupied and it still appears in Settings/Memory/Running Programs although the OS will allow a new instance of it to be started. And yet, same scenario but I have loaded several other applications on top of my two apps e.g Contacts,Notes and Tasks or whatever then the SendMessage isn't caught at all. Testing done on an HP Jornada 568 for PPC2002 and an HP iPAQ 2210 for WMforPPC2003 Is my problem to do with the SendMessage function, am I using the Windows CE 3.0 version, and how do I explicitly use the Windows CE 4.20 version on the WMforPPC2003 device.     - CF for Smartphone Guys, Downloaded the SDK yesterday and have started tinkering around with CF for Smartphone devices. Just a couple of newbie questions which sprung to mind, hope someone can answer. 1.) Are apps written for CF on Smartphones going to be slow to start everytime the device is switched off and on, while compilation of the code base occures? Any body got any thoughts? 2.) No remoting? So for CF development I assume sockets is the way forward? 3.) Finally, I am having trouble getting menu Sub items to appear. So in other words I create a MainMenu and then add Sub elements onto it using the UI editor and then compile and run. When I do this I get a System.NotSupported exception on the Form Initialization.     - Deployment problem I followed the instructions of the cf.net deployment article http://smartdevices.microsoftdev.com/Learn/Articles/566.asp x and created a .msi file. After I installed the program in the pocket pc, I found there is some problem, so I remove the program using the WinCE Application Manager. Then I created a new version of the .msi file, and try to deploy to the pocket pc again. But the .msi program always prompt me with the following error "Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel.", but I can't find any related program in Control Panel to remove.     - DataGrid that shows relational column value? I have 2 tables in a DataSet, tlbProducts and tblOrders. The tables are related using prodID fields. I want to show tblOrders in a DataGrid and replace the prodID value that is displayed in the grid with the prodDesc value from tblProducts. My current solution is to create a new field in tblOrders and use an Expression (dtOrders.Columns("product").Expression() = "Parent.prodDesc") to get the value. What I don't like is when I use ds.WriteXml to persist the dataset, the new expression field is included in the xml file. Another note to point out is that I am using a DataView as the source for the DataGrid so it reflect any changes made to the data. Here is some sample code showing what I am currently doing. Is there a better/easier way? I can pass boolean values but for some reason my string value isn't being passed. It's just null on the VB.NET CF side.     - Strang bug with the modal dialog Hi, I am building application that collects data. I am using listview to show multirow data and by clicking add/edit buttons, user can get another form to enter/edit the data for the selected row. I am using a non-fullscreen (borderless) form for the purpose. If I show this dialog form modally (using ShowDialog), I encounter following problems :- 1. If I set the dialog's parent to the main form and use ShowDialog method then the dialog is shown in background. 2. If I don't bother to set parent property then ShowDialog shows the dialog modally and in foreground. I cannot do any UI action on the main form (thats excepted) except whenever focus is on main form, taskbar display's title for that form. 3. I am creating all my dialogs at the application load time and I display a non-modal statup screen while application is loading. The funny thing is whenever code setting dialog's border to none (in dialog's constructor) executes, taskbar's caption flickers (i.e. it switches to "Start" then comes back to "App Title"). 4. I am using custom control that has combobox like interface. So whenever user clicks on an arrow button, it popups a non-modal form that allows user to select some option. If user clicks anywhere else the form gets closed. Now on my main form this control works absolutely fine. But on the dialog form, when the control-form is popped up for the first time, it is unable to receive any click event. Clicking onto it produces beeps; howvever afterwords (i.e. after closing it at first time) it works as it should. 5. To use dialog non-modally, I have to disable the main form and it looks ugly. In an INF file[1], you specify that a control is "Shared" by giving it the 0x80000000 flag, like so: "Adosync.Dll",,,0x80000000 But how do you tell it to automatically overwrite a control ONLY if it is newer than the one on the device (as well as having it Shared), and otherwise not overwrite any of them, and not ask any questions when the CAB is installing? According to the MSDN (again, see [1] below), 0x20000000 means "Do not copy file if target file is newer." But does this mean a) it *will* copy newer ones automatically, WITHOUT asking, b) the older ones *won't* copy, again WITHOUT asking, and c) the combo of "Shared" and "Overwrite Newer Only" is 0xA0000000?     - WINCE.NET 4.1, 4.2 and VS.NET 2003 Connection Together with my new Visual Studio.NET 2003 i made following experiences: 1)I cannot connect VS Studio via Active Sync with Wince.net devices without using one trick: First i select a PPC Device and i will get a "connect" Then i select Wince.net device and the connection is OK. 2.The wince.net images contain .NET runtime components but the VS deploys those components again, but non- persistant as it is deployed into the ram-filesystem. It seems, that programs, which are deployed manually are running without copying the runtime components from VS.NET 3. Having done the quarterly update to wince.net 4.2 the .net applications on the device do not even run if the the applications are deployed manually. 4. Removing the quarterly update confirm point 3. 5. As an extension to point 1: Even depoyment of software is possible choosing a PPC Device instead of a WINCE.NET device. The deployed software seems to run correctly. Has anybody made the same experiences ?     - ImageList Problem I am having a problem with VS 2003 and images, or resources, or the ImageList. It doesn't matter how many different lists I have, but somewhere between 18 and 28 images I get an exception in the initialization portion of the form. The exception always shows up on the line after the last resource is loaded. I have seen a very similar problem in VS 2002 when targeting PCs but with lots more images (200+). The exception doesn't give any additional information to pass on. I have worked around the problem by loading the images from files at runtime. My questions are: Is this a known problem?     - AssemblyInfo.cs 0.0.0.0 OK... I have traced down the problem I was having getting the version of my application to the fact that the application is not calling the AssemblyInfo.cs in the project. I didn't even know this was possible. I discovered this by calling the version and getting back 0.0.0.0 even though I had set the version number to 1.1.1.6. How can I correct this?     - Diffs between PPC2002 and Windows Mobile for PPC 2003 In 'My App' I have a button which when tapped minimises the app and when tapped and held closes the app. (The button is a version of the 'image button' posted around the CF websites, apologies to it's original author, I forget for now who posted the original) This works fine on PPC2002 but on WMforPPC2003 the area of the underlying Today screen beneath the button does not get redrawn, leaving initailly a ghost of the button in it's tap and hold state and subsequently a ghost of that portion of any other application run. I have tried various techniques to resolve this on theWMforPPC2003 device (in this case an Ipaq 2210) to no avail. My current app close code is in essence : Me.Hide() MySleep(500) ' A call to the API Sleep, in case 'things were happening too quickly' on the WMf0rPPC2003 device ' An attempt (successful) to destroy the window as all else seemed to fail Dim hWindow As IntPtr hWindow =FindWindow(Nothing, Me.Text) Me.Text = "" SendMessage(hWindow, WM_DESTROY,0,0) MySleep(500) ' Ditto Me.Close() To re-iterate all the above works fine on PPC2002 (in fact it works without the .Hide, the sleeps, and the window Destroy.... the simple .Close is enough) Any ideas anyone? Is it WMPforPPC2003, the Ipaq, the CF runtime. Having typed all this out, I've had a thought... could it be that the CF Runtime SP1 has been installed on the PPC2002 nad I need to force an install of it onto the 2003 device?     - TcpClient works in Emulator but not with a device in the cradle Hello, I am converting my old eVB app to the .NET Compact Framework. It uses the TcpClient class to connect to a server program that I have running on my desktop - Tcp address 192.168.0.15 and port 6051. My app works great when running in the emulator When I run it on my ipaq sitting in the cradle I get "The requested address is not valid in its context" My old app connects great (using the old Winsock activex control) so I know the machine should be set up properly. I have created the pocket PC app on my local machine (using VS.Net 2003).     - OpenNetCF's Groupbox & VS.NET OpenNetCF.org's Groupbox looks great. But I'm missing how to use it in VS.NET 2003. When you download the zip, it contains six files, a EULA, and five DLLs. I take the one I'm interested in (OpenNETCF.Windows.Forms.GroupBox.dll) and drop it in the project directory. I then right-click on the toolbox and add a .NET component by browsing to that DLL and selecting it.     - C# compiler not enforcing CLS compliance even with CLSCompliantAttribute In writing a custom control, I had put the [assembly: System.CLSCompliantAttribute(true)] in my code and received no errors when building using VStudio.net. When I compiled using the command line, (following MS's steps to be able to use the custom control from toolbox), I got several CLS compliance errors. I placed the attribute just below the last using statement. I also tried moving it to AssemblyInfo.cs (is that the best place anyway?) and still no CLS compliance errors in VStudio. Am I missing something, or do I have some kind of configuration issue? I didn't see anything helpful in the project build property page.     - How to create modal, SIP-like control? Essentially, we are trying to recreate a modal form on the compact framework. We want to create an application in which two forms will be open at one time, a parent and a floating toolbar. The user must be able to see and use either form without closing the other. The toolbar must be moveable and must float over the parent form. This is similar to the way the SIP works. There are a few issues: 1) how to resize a form? 2) how to keep two forms open and visible at one time? Easy to do in regular .NET, difficult in CF. Any ideas? Is eVC the only option? Hi All,

I'm just finishing up my first Pocket-PC application. I have two questions.

First, how can i determine the path to the application directory at runtime?

Second, I'm writing my dataset to an XML file. I've given it an extension
.LLX (for Lift Log XML) When I tap the file using the browser I get an
error saying there is no application associated. So what does my
application need to do to setup the file association?

a C# solution preferred, but I can muddle through anything you send :-)
