 - Leaving threads open?? Hi there, Have an issue with my .NET application. Basically the problem is it runs fine the first time and then when i close it (from settings > memory) it no longer starts when i click on the icon, literally does nothing. This started happening after i'm now using notifications to run a specific thread every 5 minutes. In my form_closing event i run this code: if ( timedSyncThread != null ) { EventWaitHandle notifyEvent = new OpenNETCF.Threading.EventWaitHandle( false, OpenNETCF.Threading.EventResetMode.AutoReset, "SAMS_SYNC_EVENT" ); // Notify the thread to stop. notifyEvent.Set(); notifyEvent.Close(); ..but i still have this problem.  - CF SP3 and Visual studio 2003 I installed CF SP3 on my PPC device. Applications developed with .NET CS2003 no longer run (at launch it shows message unable to load type from system.windows.form.control assembly system.windows.form If I unistall SP3 from device all works fine. It seems executable generated by VS2003 aren't compatible with CF SP3. Because new PDAs have SP3 preinsalled (i.e. HP2750) how can I instruct :NET Visual Studio 2003 to use newer assembly?  - Validating Numericupdown control I'm trying to create an app in VB.NET to run on CE/PocketPC. I've got a form where it asks you for the date and time, auto-populating it with the current date and time. The date and time shouldn't need to be changed by very much, so I want to use a control that allows you to change the date and time by a day or minute by using up/down arrows. The obvious solution to this was the NumericUpDown control, which does exactly this (numbers rather than dates, so I used several). Unfortunately, the NumericUpDown isn't restricted to numeric data - the user can type letters into it. On top of that, so far all my attempts to validate it have failed. The Keypress and Keydown events don't seem to get fired so you can't cancel the keypress, the Validating event doesn't pass the old and new values of the control, so you can't reset it if the value is invalid and there's no way to cancel the update. I tried writing my own date/time up-down control, but when I try to incorporate it into my CE app the app won't compile - I don't get any compile errors, it just runs through and then fails. I'm assuming that's because it's a user control and the .NET compact framework doesn't like it, although since all it is is a text box and scroll bar with a bit of validation code behind it I really don't know why - I'm don't think I used anything incompatible with the compact framework. So, anyway, I was hoping someone had some suggestions as to how to either validate the NumericUpDown, stop non-numeric entry to it (or any text entry even, as long as it still allows selection using the up and down buttons) or else get my user control working.  - Datagram Socket Crashes when too much data to send! In my application, I am sending data "as fast as possible" into a datagram socket, which is blocking, and which has a 400 kbyte sendbuffer. The code is similar to this: while (keepAlive) { byte[] data = dataSource.getData(); int sentData = socket.SendTo(data , 0, dataSize, SocketFlags.None, remoteEndPoint); //If I add this line, it is working fine //Thread.Sleep(50); } If the Thread.Sleep() line is commented, the application will crash almost instantly... I get no exception, no error... the connection with Visual Studio .NET 2003 is lost, the application is shut down... and the Ipaq network features are not working any more.. only a soft reset can bring it back working. I don't understand why the socket.SendTo() function does not block the application untill the data is sent... It seems it only copies the data into an internal buffer, and stupidly crashes when this buffer is full. If I uncomment the line Thread.Sleep(), then the application is working. This line is slowing down the application so that the data rate is low enough for the socket to send it. Paul G. Tobey tried to help me already. He suggested to check the value returned by socket.SendTo()... unfortunately this value is always positive and equals to the size of the byte[] the application is sending. So everything seems to behave like normal, but it crashes completely.... What can I do to ensure the application is sending the data as fast as possible ? And also to be sure it will not crash ?  - Font size changed in Mobile 2003 HI, We are having a Compact Framework application that works fine with the Pocket PC 2002. In the application there is a textbox with less font size, its showing properly in Pocket PC running Pocket PC 2002. But the same application when we run on the Pocket PC running Mobile 2003, the font size gets increased automatically. Is there any known issue?? Do i need to install or uninstall any service pack?  - OpenNetCF v1.3 ?? I'm having some serious headaches after installing v1.3, and then trying to revert back to v1.2 where everything worked. Is there something being left behind after uninstalling v1.3? I have attempted an uninstall of 1.3, it looks like all is gone, then reinstalled v1.2 - although the error messages on deployment are gone, I can't get the emulator to run the app. I have a demo at 8am and need this to be working... what can I do???  - Databinding the second Hi again, I am back with my old question in a changed scenario. As described before, I have som touble with updating a listView, that has a bound table. I'll try to describe the scen.: For those who read my fist post: I changed from ArrayList to DataSet+DataTable. Form1 has a Listview and a button to open Form2 A DataTable is bound to the Form1-Listview. Form2 has some Textboxes bound to the currently selected Element in the Listview of Form1. The Textboxes of Form2 are populated well with the DataTable bound to the Listview. Changes made to the data in the textboxes are communicated to the underlying DataTable, as I call this.BindingContext[Global.patientenTable].EndCurrentEdit(); on clicking on an ok button in Form2. When closing Form2, bringing Form1 back to display, the changes have not been reflected by the Listview, which still shows the old value of the property recently changed. I added a button to do some "brutal" refresh by setting the Listviews DataSource to null an back to my Table again. Clicking this button shows the correct new value of my property. I am pretty desperate now, because I expected the ADO-Klasses to implement the RefreshOnChange-kind-of functionality just by them selves. If I went wrong in that point, could someone plz tell me the preferred pattern to cause refreshes to all Controls bound to a DataSource ? I can'T believe, that I have to do many "null-settings" like described above.  - CreateProcess argument escape characters I'm using CreateProcess to launch an email and it's going pretty well. The only problem im having is that my arguments are causing errors. My string looks something like this: (this function calls the proper api below) CreateProcess("tmail.exe", "-to \"" + UserEmail + "\" " + "-subject \"" + subject + "\" " + "-body \"" + body + "\""); if the body string has a " or - in it I seem to get some errors. I'm assuming I should escape them. I tried using \" and \- but that doesn't seem to be working right. I read here from this page about the xp shell the following http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/ntcmds_shelloverview.mspx You can use most characters as variable values, including white space. If you use the special characters <, >, |, &, or ^, you must precede them with the escape character (^) or quotation marks. If you use quotation marks, they are included as part of the value because everything following the equal sign is taken as the value. So I tried ^'s and that didn't work either. Anyone know what the reserved characters are and what the escape character or sequence is?  - Urgent: How to suppress Standby while working? Hi, i have a problem. i do a reorganization of a database on a pocketPC (no SQL-database). this can take some minutes (5 to 10 maybe). Unfortunately the pocketPC will switch to Standby-mode after a few minutes - and this can cause a corrupt database (when this happens while the application is writing data) Of course the user could change the settings to NOT go to standby at all - but i cannot check this for all users, all time, anywhere. So the question is: is it possible to execute some code, so that the PocketPC won't go to sleep while my function is running? If so, how can this be done?  - How to Launch IE to a specific URL? I have been looking over the newsgroup and some of the sites (Code Project) and OpenNET CF for help but am stuck. I am creating a VB.NET based PocketPC application. We have a known URL from the application and now want to launch IE. With Windows .NET it has been very straight forward to do this. However, the approach used for Windows .NET is not supported in .NET CF. So, are there any examples (VB or C#) that I can learn/copy from? What do you recommend?  - To my OpenNETCF friends Hi. :) I have a bunch of OpenNETCF 1.2 assemblies referenced in a CF 2.0 project; VS 2005 seems to want to push the *CF 1.0 CAB* file to the device each time I deploy--could the OpenNETCF 1.2 assemblies perhaps be causing this behavior? I just installed my cf app onto a device (it runs from the emulator), I installed first all of the required cabs including OpenNetCF.sdf.ppc3.armv4.cab, and after my app gets installed the following message is displayed: <myappname> requires the installation of OpenNETCF.SDF.ppc3.ARMV4.CAB for it to run properly. Intall the Cab file before running this application. I did install it, and it displays in the Remove Programs applet. I've installed this many times before without a hitch.  - Cancel SQL CE Replication gracefully? (i already posted this message a few days ago on the sql ce newsgroup and no one has been able to help me...) Hello... We are running a .Net CF app with SQL CE 2.0. In the cases where there is a long running replication process (we have some mobile devices that are replicating via cell modem...a requirement), does anyone know of a way to cancel gracefully out of a replication process? I was thinking of changing our current replication function to operate on a background thread for starters...but then....is there a "cancel" or "abort" call that I can use to gracefully end replication?  - Garbage Collection & Creating Class Instances Hi! I had a problem for several days and now found out what it is caused by: When calling Sub New of a class under XP, on a specific line (getting IP address) the procedure was left immediately without raising an error. Break Points in code lines after the "x = new y" were ignored. Stepping through the code opens a message box on that line: "There is not source code available for the current location." The cause: The program is a terminal emulation running in two versions for XP and CE but sharing most of the code. When the connection is closed the program restarts internally. Under CE the memory runs full because the garbage collection doesn't clean up. So I added: GC.Collect() GC.GetTotalMemory(True) GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers() This runs perfectly under CE. But under XP it seems to dispose objects that are created afterwards, _while_ they are created! I solved the problem by detecting if it is a CE device and calling GC.* only there.  - I want SQL 2005 Management Studio! I'm running Beta 2 of VS 2005, and I accidentally installed SQL Express 2005 with the default installation. It doesn't include the nifty management studio. So I tried to install the Developer Edition (latest CTP) off MSDN, but I still don't seem to have access to those tools.  - Combo.SelectedIndex Changed Event? I am using a combo to select records from a datagrid. If the user selects an item in the combo with the stylus, the events fires three times, and the datagrid.selectedindex switches to the correct value, before reverting to 0 twice. However, if the user selects an item using the directional button on the bottom of the pda and scrolls to a record, the event fires once and the currect record is selected in the grid. Does this sound like intended behaviour?  - How can you automate the creation of a SQL CE virtual directory? I'm having a devil of a time figuring this out. I need to create the virtual directory to be used by SQL CE RDA as part of an Installshield installation of our product, but I cannot get it to work properly. It seems there is no way to have it create the directory with both Run Scripts and Executables permissions set. Has anyone done this?  - Cannot sync when Auto Identity Ranges Enabled? I have been pulling my hair out with this for some time now: I have a small db which I need to merge replicate with a number of PocketPC devices. NT Authentication is used. If I do not enable the automatic identity range option, the PocketPC clients can connect without error. However, if I enable this (which I need to), the PocketPC user gets a host of errors: 1. (Code 80004005) A call to SQL Server Reconciler failed. 2. (Code 80045007) The merge process could not retrieve article information for publication 'Survey' 3. (Code 0) {call sp_MShelpmergearticles(?,8000000,?)} 4. (Code 4833) Could not connect to server 'SERVER1' because 'SQLAdmin' is not defined as a remote login at the server. SQLAdmin is our Service startup account. It is a member of the Administrator group. The user account being used to connect is a standard domain user account. If I add the user to the Administrators group the process succeeds everytime. I have checked permissions on the SQLCE folder, and snapshot folders and AFAIK they are correct (i.e. the user has write permission). It looks like a permission problem, but I dont know where. It seems the only solution to this is to add the user to the Administrators group (totally unacceptable!).  - DataGrid and DataView question I inherited some code that binds a dataset/datatable to a datagrid. When the user highlights some rows the code loops thru a DataView of the grid to act on those rows. This works fine, unless you first click a column to sort by that column. Then the datagrid rows are not in the same sequence as the datasource table. I'm thinking this is a definite bug in this code, but I'm wondering what the point of doing things this way might have been. I mean why bother with CurrencyManager and DataView if you can just access the elements via datagrid1[row, col]? I'm using CEAppMgr, along with the required ini file, to install a Windows Mobile 2003 app onto my Smartphone. Within the build environment, I am creating a cab file for my app. Using a batch file, for now, I call CEAppMgr passing in the ini file that knows of the cab I've created. It works great! The problem: To enable my app to install and run on 'all' Smartphones, I intend to sign the cab. For testing purposes, I am currently signing the cab with one of the Test Certs. The problem is, that when I sign the cab, CEAppMgr will no longer install my application. I turned on the simple debugging supported by CEAppMgr and found that the cause is that the file size embedded into the cab, no longer matches the actual file size (because of the digital cert).  - CF SP3 And Globalization All, I have written a VB.NET application for a CE.NET device with 3 current languages available (en, fr, es). It was running fine unil a new device image was loaded which included SP3. There are currently two issues: 1. If CultureInfo is not specified when calling GetString from the resourcemanager, no culture specific string is returned, regardless of the Regional settings on the device. Workaround by getting CurrentCulture and passing that it. 2. Localizable set to True on the form and text for controls set for each available language. Default language is always used, and when I checked CurrentUICulture, it is set to "en-US" regardless of the regional settings and CurrentCulture. Because both CurrentCulture and CurrentUICulture are read-only on CF, there is no apparent way to force it. Not sure if OpenNTCF supports this function, but I had to remove it from the project due to deployment issues, so I do not want to add it back.  - Catch Event: PDA into PowerSave Dear Group, I am developing a client-server application with pda's. I use the class Socket to obtain a connection between server pc and client pda. When the pda goes out of range of the WIFI network, then it is succesfully disconnected from the server. But when the pda goes into power save mode, it gets disconnected on client side, but the connection seems still up in the server. When i then send data through this socket in the server, i receive no notification that the connection was closed. (and so the sent message is sent into the void?) You might be able to configure your device to be able to be seen in some
way, but not the network neighborhood way, unless they have file server
components running on them. Whether they do or not is up to the device OEM,
so, if you're talking about PPC, you're out of luck and will have to do
something custom.

If you have to go custom, you might have your devices listen on a UDP
(datagram) port, or as part of a certain multicast group, for messages of a
certain format. If they get one, they might respond, either to the group or
only to the sender, with information about their IP address, name, or
whatever.
