You might be able to configure your device to be able to be seen in some
way, but not the network neighborhood way, unless they have file server
components running on them. Whether they do or not is up to the device OEM,
so, if you're talking about PPC, you're out of luck and will have to do
something custom.
If you have to go custom, you might have your devices listen on a UDP
(datagram) port, or as part of a certain multicast group, for messages of a
certain format. If they get one, they might respond, either to the group or
only to the sender, with information about their IP address, name, or
whatever.
