    - Pocket PC: VS2005 does not allow set proper size to TextBox control Hi, VS2005, CF2.0, Pocket PC project(2003 or 5.0). According to Pocket PC UI Guidelines TextBox should have: - 9pt Tahoma font - 20px height The problem is that I cannot change TextBox size to 20 in designer, it is always 21. Is it a bug?     - Samples from book do not appear to be running correctly I am new to the compact framework... so the problem is likely user error.... But, I bought the Core Reference by Andy Wigley (a highly recommended book) and I have a couple issues... 1) When I try to run the programs from chapter 3.... the Deploy dialog box appears... I choose Pocket PC 2002 Emulator... The screen thinks for a while, then the Deploy Dialog box appears again... and again (it appears to be in an endless loop) and no program ever runs. What am I doing wrong ? 2) I ran a program from chapter 9 just fine, however, when I look at the code in design mode, I do not see any forms. Where are they hiding ? Thanks !     - How to program for saving a signature file Just starting out with Mobile apps.... Any guidence on how I might do the following... Save a copy of the signature that the receiver of an order would provide (it would be scribbled onto the Pocket PC) and saved to some kind of file (maybe a .jpeg), then store the contents of that file in a sql server table ? or maybe just store the path to the file there ?     - xml web service proxy and serializable assembly generation The POS application we are developing is designed to call two web services. The first web service has only one method and it returns a string with an Uri where the second web service is located. The second web service has several methods and objects. One of the methods is used to download the data for the particular POS location (terminal). This data is parsed and a SqlCe database is created on the device. The data downloaded is not that large, worst case scenario it is 400KB. After profiling the PC version of the application is shows that it is allocating a total of 50MB of process global heap memory and the working set of the application is about 4 to 5 MB. The same behavior happens on the Pocket PC version of the application. The problem I am having is that on the Pocket PC there is not enough memory. An OutOfMemoryExeption is thrown. The Pocket PC has about 32MB of Program memory and about 7 MB of storage memory. I have taken the following steps towards finding a solution to this problem. I have minimized and optimized the usage of memory. I monitor System memory and when it reaches a threshold I call GC.Collect. I handle the WM_Hibernate message and call GC.Collect and dispose some unmanaged resources. After profiling the application some more I found out that if the application goes to the background the OS reclaims unused memory by the process. So after this discovery I added code to minimize the application when the memory starts to get low. This helped a little but still run out of memory. I have also attempted to control the distribution of storage and program memory. I proceeded to profile the application again and realized that the creation and invocation of a web service call creates about allocates about 11MB to 16MB of memory. I profiled the application of the PC and the same occurs. It turns out that the .Net FX reflects all types in a web service proxy and generates a serializable assembly for each proxy. To do this it loads Jscript runtime dll and the Vsa runtime dll. After the above observation I tried to pre-generate the serializable assemblies using a tool called sgen.exe and profile the application again but it seems that it does not load the serializable assemblies at all it generates them. Everything I have read about this approach should work but apparently I must be missing something. After analyzing these findings I think that if I avoid the 16MB hit of the serializable assemblies generation the application will load since the initial working set of the application is 4 to 5 MB.     - CE .NET Direct Sql Server Connection I have looked into a few messages about connecting directly from CE.Net to MSSQL via SQLConnection object. However, when I try to import the system.data.sqlclient namespace - it doesn't exist. What else do I have to do to make a connection string directly to SQL server (not SQL CE). Thanks in advance.     - Windows Mobile 5.0, .NETCFv2.0, and many sockets I am looking for a good way to handle numerous sockets (1 UDP and as many as 20+ TCP child sockets) in WM 5.0 using C# and the .NETCFv2. Currently, I'm using async class and it works fine for small numbers of sockets; 1 UDP and up to 15 or so TCP child sockets. When I get to more than 15 (or so) I have an issue with other threads, using the threadpool, not running. Specifically, I have a managing thread (using the System.Threading.Timer stuff) that ceases to be called once the number of async calls gets rather high. Do the async socket calls block the threadpool threads? If so, is there a way to get around this, or the is the best idea just not to use async socket calls in this situation? I can't find any good documentation on how things are handled within the OS (a pointer to such documentation would be _greatly_ appreciated, too). I was at MEDC in Vegas last week, but failed to catch one of the VM Core developers to bug them about this. >From looking at other posts, it seems that Socket.Select() is a much better method for handling a large number of sockets. When using select() is there a way to add another event that I can raise to get select() to come back or will it only respond to socket events?     - Input Panel button under Windows Mobile 5 Ok, I didn't get any response to my previous question about problems enabling the SIP button under WM5, so I'll ask what other design strategies I can take... Does everyone use munu bars on every screen, so its a non-issue hiding and showing the SIP button? I have no menus in my application except on the main screen, and I really need to maximize the screen real estate, so having an entire menu bar show for just the SIP button is a complete waste. The application uses dynamic forms, so a form may consist entirely of checkboxes and dropdowns so no SIP is needed, or it may have text boxes on it which would need the SIP. There is a Save and Cancel button and a checkbox at the bottom of the screen. Should I make the Save and Cancel buttons part of the menu bar. I notice most of the WM5 apps now have an action button on the left of the menu bar and a "menu" option to the right. Is this the preferred style now. Any suggestions? Tag: CF2 and PPC Tag: 70421

    - Emulator & Webservices in VS 2k5 ASP.Net Development Server -- debugging On my development PC, I have VS.Net 2005 open, with a webservice being debugged in ASP.Net Development Server. I'd like to get the emulator to connect to this webservice and be able to debug both sides of the transaction at the same time. I've tried all sorts of combinations of networking with the emulator without success. One problem seems to stem from the fact that the ASP.Net Development Server will only answer connections that come from localhost. It cannot be addressed by fully qualified name or by IP address.     - Moving picture Hi, I have an app which displays a sequence of png images, these are copied into PictureBox as shown below. This sequence is done in its own thread, its just that the single line 'picImage.Image = New Bitmap(arrimg(cnt) & ".png")' is killing performance, also generating InvalidCastException. How can i improve this? Basically it cycles through an array of png files under timer control.     - Consuming webservices from a smart device project ... <Method>Async() web method calls missing in the reference.cs ... I thought of posting this to microsoft webservices NG but there is no activity in those news groups. I am consuming webservices API published by salesforce.com by adding a web reference to a smart device project. Somehow the reference.cs does not contain method calls such as MethodAsync() which I think are new in .NET 2.0. Am I wrong some where here. When I create an Asp.NET 2.0 Hello World webservice on my box and add a web reference to it in my smart device project, I can see HelloWorldAsync() web method.     - Dynamic event binding Hi, I'm looking for any info on binding dynamic events in C# for CF. I need to create a delegate at runtime that associates an unknown runtime event with a handler. In the standard framework, I used the following to bind the event to the 'ProcessEvent" operation, EventInfo eventInfo = value; object EventPublisher = someEventSource; MethodInfo mi = typeof(this).GetMethod("ProcessEvent", BindingFlags.NonPublic | BindingFlags.Instance); Delegate eventDelegate = Delegate.CreateDelegate(eventInfo.EventHandlerType, this, mi); eventInfo.AddEventHandler(eventPublisher, eventDelegate); This works fine, however, Delegate.CreateDelegate is not supported in CF, so I tried this alternative :- EventHandler eHT = new EventHandler(this.ProcessEvent); eventInfo.AddEventHandler(eventPublisher, eHT); The problem with this is that it only works with System.EventHandler. In other words, if I try and use this to tie up an event which uses a subclass EventHandler :- i.e., public delegate void ContinueEventHandler(object sender, ContinueEventArgs eventArgs); public virtual event ContinueEventHandler Continue; instead of public event EventHandler Fired; //works then I get a runtime exception :- ArgumentException Object of type "System.EventHandler" cannot be converted to type ContinueEventHandler Is there an alternative mechanism to acheive what I'm trying to do? thanks Tag: CF2 and PPC Tag: 70348

    - SQL Server CE and SELECT... Hi, I have in a DB, a table with 10000 rows. I do a request : "SELECT MAX(idalt) AS id,reference FROM reffab WHERE fab='myfab' GROUP BY fab,reference" and the time to obtain the result seems to be long. If i have 154 rows answer from this request, the time is 2.8 seconds for the request and 1.2 seconds to obtain the data from the DataReader. If i have 3600 rows answer from the request, the time is 6.7 seconds for the request and 18 seconds to obtain the data from the DataReader. Can someone tell me if it is a normal time? 4 seconds to extract 154 rows from a table with 10000 rows!! 24 seconds to extract 3600 rows from a table with 10000 rows!! I can't even connect my device to VS2005. I
simple get the message that I am using the
wrong version of ActiveSync. I am using the
latest version (downlaoded yesterday) although
I already had V3.8 installed anyway.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get
around this apparently inaccurate error
message?

You need version 4.1 of ActiveSync in order to debug apps with VS 2005.

You need ActiveSync 4.1 in order to deploy mobile applications
developed with VS2005.

You need to remove the old active sync before installing the new one.
The other folks are correct in your need for version 4.1, too.

I would try removing both versions and installing 4.1 again.
