    - Why is SQLFreeStmt within the transaction using parameterized inse I am using ODBC.NET to perform mulitple parameterized inserts into a database. The performance has been terrible. Upon research into the ODBC trace log, it appears the a SQLFreeStmt is being executed by ODBC upon every ExecuteNonQuery that I am issuing. This is causing a huge amount of overhead, especially when working with thousands of inserts. When coding against the ODBC API (outside of .NET), I only issue the SQLFreeStmt upon committing the data, and it is very quick (as expected). Of course, I need to figure this out in .NET, as this is our platform. Here is basically what I am doing in .NET: 1) Open OdbcConnection 2) Begin Transaction 3) Create OdbcCommand and assign to transaction 4) Create parameter collection 5) Loop through all records, assign values to parms, and perform parameterized inserts 6) Commit transaction 7) Close transaction. Any ideas on what I can do to stop these SQLFreeStmts from being issued would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!!     - Copy database schema from Access to SQL Server Hi all, I'm trying to write an application that takes an Access database as template to customize a new or existing SQL Server database. When something in the template database is changed, I want to apply these changes to the SQL database. For example if new columns are added to a table or constraints are changed, the application parses each Access table and relation and whatever and applies this to the SQL Server database. The data in the tables is irrelevant, only the schema is important. I have to apply default values, check contraints (I think it's validation rules in Access), maximum column lengths, ... How can I accomplish this? Do I have to loop through the Access tables and relations and create a DDL SQL statement for each? What if the column/contraint already existed? Seems complicated, maybe there is an easier solution. I'm using Visual Studio 2005 and C# 2.0, so this should be the way to go. Thanks in advance.     - Sybase AsaClient and DbProviderFactories Hello all, My team is trying to use the iAnywhere.Sybase.Asaclient (middle part might be spelled incorrect) in our C# project with a DbProviderFactory class to generate new code. However when we try to create a new factory with DbProviderFactory factory = DbProviderFactories.GetFactory("iAnywhere.Sybase.Asaclient). This returns an ArgumentException to us.     - Question about finding records using Stored Procedures I have a table called Customer. I have a locator screen which is composed of a grid and a couple of search boxes. The user is going to choose which customer records to display in the grid. The choices are LastName or firstName or any part of them, Social Security Number, Status (Active,Inactive, etc.) and office. Now the user can choose to find all customers who are active and from a certain office or they could find all the customers whose last name starts with S and is active and from a particular office. In the past, I looked at each search field and built a where clause which was then passed to a select statement to retrieve the correct records. I am not happy doing this and want to switch to stored procedures. When the user clicks the 'Find' button after filling in some search fields, I will create an empty customer object and fill in the fields that are in the search screen and this past this object to the server. On the server, I will parse the object and figure out which fields have values in them meaning that they are to be part of the search critieria. Once I have done that, then I will call the appropriate Find method for the cusotmer. That is my dilemma. Do I have the followng in my code?     - Question about SUM query I have a "transaction" table with 2 columns, TransTypeId and TransAmt. Example: TransTypeId TransAmt A 100 A 200 B 100 C 50 B 100 A 100 I am trying to do a SUM of all the TransTypeId A and B. The result should be 600. I WANT TO GET ONLY THIS 1 VALUE BACK. But, the result of the query is returning... A 400 B 200 It's not summing it as a "group", but per "TransTypeId". Any ideas why? Here's the raw query...     - How sluggish is a big xml file in combination with datasets? Hello, I am currently working on a project which will run in an environment, where the size of the database is very limited. That's why I thought about relying in some parts entirely on xml files (and datasets) as an DB replacement. I.E.: DataSet myDataSetToRead = new DataSet(); myDataSetToRead.ReadXmlSchema("c:\\abcd.xsd"); myDataSetToRead.ReadXml("c:\\abc.xml"); dostuff with the dataset data etc. Now, I will doing this only for the little used parts application, where maybe 5 users at once will use it. I know that this approach is slow compared to a real DB, but, what are the other limitations? Is there a size limit? I mean, will it somehow break after the file reaches 50 MB?     - ComboBox loads slow I am noticing that it seems to take windows a long ass time to paint a ComboBox control that has say, 32000 items in its dropdown. Yes, I know that's a lot.     - How do I merge tables in ado.net Hi, I'm fairly new to ado.net and I'm not sure I'm doing this in the best way... I retrieve two tables from two different databases and place them in a dataset. Both tables have a column which relates them. The relation type is one to many. I use a custom procedure to "merge" the two tables into a third before I display the third table in a datagrid. The procedure creates a new table and iterates through the two tables using a relation object and GetChildRows.     - QueriesTableAdapter does not appear in toolbox. Why not? I created a stored procedure called AddOrder which does an 'insert' statement. It appeared in the Server Explorer of Visual Studio. Then I dragged it to the Dataset Designer. This makes a QueriesTableAdapter, which I do find in the diagram when I "Edit Dataset in Designer". The problem is that this QueriesTableAdapter does not appear in the ToolBox, so I cannot drag it on to forms. Is there any reason why it doesn't show up in the toolbox?     - SQLBulkCopyOptions with Default values Hello. I'm changing my code which copies data from memory to a SQL Server from using a data adapter's update method to using the writeToServer method of the SQLBulkCopy object. The update method of the data adapter worked fine, but I expect the SQLBulkCopy to perform better. The problem is I'm getting an error message that one of the fields doesn't allow null values. With the data adapter, I didn't explicitly have to set the fields to anything, as the fields have a default value of zero defined on the server. I'm using the SQLBulkCopyOption KeepIdentity and even tried using (Not SqlBulkCopyOptions.KeepNulls), but still get the error. Does SQLBulkCopy not recognize default values unless the field value is explicitly set to null?     - Cross network Access db connection problem Hi I wonder if you can help me. I've got an asp.net (version 1.1) intranet application that connects across a network to an access backend db. The backend db is on a directory where everyone (including the ASP.Net account) has full access (not sure if that's the right way to go about things but it works). However my application now needs access to some information from another network access db, which is on a directory where everyone (including the ASP.Net account) has read & execute rights. When I try and open a connection I get the "you can't do this because the db is already opened exclusively by another user" message. I can't, and don't want to, change the directory rights to the second db and it's in constant use so I can't kick people out. Is there any way around this? Thanks for your help in advance.     - Timeout expired on Insert Hi, We have a huge table having around 29579242 Rows.The table is huge and there is no clustered index on the table. There are a couple of non-clustered indexes. We have started experiencing these errors. We increased the command timeout to 120 (2 minutes) but the error isstill occuring on Insert.     - How to Provide Unique Key Values During DataContext.SubmitChanges I am using Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 and investigating various aspects of LINQ. I used the LINQ to SQL designer to derive a new DataContext class with some entity classes, and am overriding the behavior of SubmitChanges and implementing the Insert partial method for a particular entity class's insert operation. I'm doing this because I'm dealing with a black-box SDK that updates data in the database according to its own business rules, but I'd like to be able to access this SDK via LINQ. So I've constructed entity classes in the designer based on the tables accessed by the SDK, and am only going through the SDK on updates and inserts. The problem is, this SDK is not row-based. It does not update the database until an object and all its children have been provided (which is important when inserting a write-once object). The data does, however, have the notion of a primary key (as do the SQL tables underlying the data). So DataContext wants values in there after every insert I guess. My first question is, if I don't call ExecuteDynamicInsert and instead perform the update through the SDK, how to I provide a unique key value back to the DataContext? Right now, if I add multiple rows in a single SubmitChanges operation, I receive an exception: System.Data.Linq.DuplicateKeyException I assume this is because the primary key values in the entity class instances were left as null and I see no way to fill them in from the derived DataContext methods (the primary key property is read-only, and the internal storage for the property is private). My next question is, is there a way to implement a system where the primary key values are not known until all the Insert and Update operations are complete (at the end of SubmitChanges). Right now the error is happening as soon as the second Insert operation completes (the first duplicate empty key is noticed). I have considered implementing some entity class partial method like OnValidate to provide a dummy unique key in there (by directly setting the private member variable), then at the end of SubmitChanges, turning off ObjectTrackingEnabled and providing the actual key values, but I suspect the framework won't like me changing ObjectTrackingEnabled after the initial query.     - The DataTable / DataSet size Hi, We do ADO.NEt programming only on the time-to time basis, so we don't have the real deep experience in this matter. Every where in MSDN or other documentation I can read that DataTable/DataSet is designated to keeping disconnected data from a database. So far, so good. But I have never seen any recommendation about how (or when) to control the size of these objects. For example letâ??s say we have a table that can be small at the beginning and we keep this small amount of records in a disconnected DataTable object. After several months the size of the table in a SQL database can grow to several-docents of thousand records. How should the client side application respond to this change, or, when we should start to worry about the size of fetched data? I know it depends from available memory and so onâ?¦. The problem is I have an xml file coming from a non-.Net source that I'm trying to load into a strongly typed DataSet. I've created the schema and then the DataSet from there.     - Memory Leak Caused by Using DataTable.Select Hi, I have a DataTable object and need a subset of the rows at runtime so I perform a DataTable.Select on it to retrieve an array of DataRows. I am using this over the DataView/Filter approach as it performs slighltly better in my application. The problem is that the returned DataRow array does get removed from memory. I have tried setting all the elements to null, setting the array variable to null, wrapping the array variable in an IDisposable class, calling GC.Collect etc. etc. but it still does not get removed from memory.     - Change Order of Events Hi, I have an odd issue with the MonthCalendar control. I need to capture certain mouseeventargs, which I can only do in the MouseDown event. I need to pass these arguments to the DateChanged event to make the logic in that routine work correctly. Simple enough, except that the DateChanged event fires before the MouseDown event, making it too late to gather these arguments. Can anybody help me figure out a way to effectively reverse the order in which these events fire?     - Need advice on banking application I am working on an ASP.NET 2.0 banking-type application. No, it's NOT a school question! This is a real-world web application. :) The table "Transactions" contain all types of individual "transactions" - interest_payment, deposits, withdrawals & fees mostly. Each of these entries are related to an "account". (So, of course, summing all of these would give the current account "balance".) On a nightly basis I have to do this... FOR EACH "account" I need to (1) get the current "balance" of the account, (2) increase it by a small set percentage (all accounts get the same % increase) then (3) insert a NEW interest_payment record in the Transactions table for EACH account. Any idea how I should go about this? I'm not sure if I can do this in 1 or 2 steps (like a large SQL statement) or if I have to write some VB.NET code and loop thru every record. It is intermittently return the following error message: 'Error executing the command exec [proc_name] to DataSet. String or binary data would be truncated. The statement has been terminated.' If I run the same proc in SQL, it is never returning the error. If I compile the proc and access my web page again, the query runs fine. After a length of time (not sure exactly what length or what other factors there might be), the query returns this error again in the web page. I am trying to narrow down what the issue might be. Based on the error, it seems like a fairly straightforward thing to hunt down in SQL, but I am not getting the error in SQL (EVER!). To be on the safe side, I have reviewed the code to make sure that there are no places that truncation could happen. I am wondering if SQL is trying to recompile the proc and if that could possible cause this error. Any help or pointers in how to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated!     - Business logic per typed datatable I want to validate my data at the typed dataset level and not at the datagridview / ui level. Data validation is a business rule and as such should be a different layer then the UI. Basically, I have a class made for each datatable in my typed dataset. The class has the abilitiy to fill a specific datatable, do searches and join etc. I want to place my business logic in this class. However, the only event I see for a type datatable is the rowchanged event. I can't figure out how to get the change information per cell. For example, if someone is changing a cell value from x to b, I want to validate that change. So I need the proposed value and the existing value of the cell before I allow it to be changed in the typed datatable.     - best way to tackle issue with writing Data, Appending Data and Rea Hello! I need some input as I am not quite sure the best way to approach what I need to do..... I am collecting information from users in a Forms Application but also have data that I have read from my database and the two are related. As I read the data from the user (every time they hit Enter), I need to be able to write the data to a file on my machine (so I need to be able to append to this file) and also display it in a DataGrid. Once the user is finished, I need to write all that data to a table in my database. I am not sure what kind of file I should use, a flat file or an xml file since I need to be adding this file but also displaying it. I thought of writing to an xml file as that would help me in my display of data in a grid. Steps are: 1. Read data and store in a DataSet. 2. Read user input and store user input and DataRow to a file. Also, display user input and data row in a DataGrid. 3. Continue with step 2 until done. As user enters data, keep appending to the file on the file system and also refresh the DataGrid. 4. When done, write the file to a table in the database. I am using SQL2000, VS2005 and C#. i'm using a typed DataSet called myDs. This dataset has 2 Tables,
Table1 and Table2.

i have created a DataSet like this:

myDs dsOld = new myDs();

//here i populate the 2 tables

......

//and then call the method to get the added rows

myDs dsNew = (myDs)dsOld.GetChanges(DataRowState.Added);

at this point on dsNew i have only the added rows of Table1 instead
Table2 is set to null.So, the method returns only the rows of 1 table
(Table1).

i have debugged the code and i see that the both tables of the dataset
dsOld are full of rows that have the rowstate = added.

somebody can explain me whats the problem ? it's seem like a bug
