 - OleDbDataReader I'm currently using .NET version 2003. I want to be able to retrieve records. How do I do so using the OleDbDataReader? I want to be able to retrieve records using a selected choice from the combo box. Only when the user has made the selection does the form display the relevant details to that selection.  - Datagrid Child rows I have a dataset that contains 5 tables. One parent and 4 child tables. When I bind a datagrid to the parent table, the "+" expand is visible. I then click the "+" sign and the names of the child tables are there. But, I can only see the first two, and the Horizontal scroll bar does not allow me to scroll and see the rest. The datagrid property "HorizScrollBar" does not appear to be available at design time to modify the minimum and maximum properties. Does anyone know how to get this to work?  - RowState changes to Modified if a DataRow is viewed via a DataGrid Hi, I have a DataTable that is bound via a DataView to a DataGrid. Every time I click on a row on the DataGrid, the underlying DataRow's RowState property gets changed to Modified. Is this the expected behavior? Is there a way around this? I checked these rows field by field and there is no difference. Read further, it gets even more bizarre. Then I do a GetChanges which gives me the same rows marked as modified as expected. I update my database with the resulting DataSet, and everything is good (nothing gets changed since there are really no changes). Then I try to merge this DataSet with the original big one and I get a constraint violation. There are no constraints on my DataSet that do not exist on my database. And the database was happy, so why is the merge failing. Please note that I am using int identity fields for PKs, but I am not even adding a row, nor really modifying anything!  - Syncing with remote db Hi We have an access db running on a windows 2003 server. The server is connected to the internet via ADSL. I would like a windows mobile 2003 based vb.net app to sync data from the server, ideally via gprs, from time to time, the pda and the server have the same info. What is a good way to go about doing the data sync between the pda and the server? Do we have to upsize the server access db to sql server before it can sync with pda sql server ce, or can we keep the access app as it is?  - Oracle Stored Procs with Parameters We are connecting to an Oracle 8.1.7 database using System.Data.OracleClient. Executing SELECT statements is easy. Modifying data is a cinch. Calling Stored Procedures was no problem until I tried to call a stored procedure with parameters.  - Inserts and the Identity field I am trying to run an insert statement against a table, and I get an error: "Can not insert explicit value for identity column in table "table name" when Identity_Insert is set to off." Now, in the set up of the table, when I populate it, I set the Column in the columns collection to be an identity field and I set it to true and all that. This message seems to imply that I need to set something on the SQL Server side, through the database, but I'm thinking I shouldn't have to do that. How do I get around this? Can I just set some property through the ADO.Net? If so, what am I missing? I looked through about four pages of old posts and didn't see anything similiar, but I'm sure this has come up, and I apologize if I'm asking somethign that's been addressed already. Thanks, Thad.  - Performace and large datasets Hi, I have a SQL table with over 100,000 records. I have a stored procedure that return this record set to me(vb.net client), and i then display these records in a grid. The problem is that dataset waits for all the data, before the grid control can populate with this data.  - DataSet and DateTime ? How can I extract a DateTime value from a Dataset in Asp.Net page to a DateTime field in code behind ? Here is my c# code: 1. Dataset ds=new Dataset (read by MS/Data Application Block) and was successfully displayed on the Asp.Net Data grid control. 2.  - DataSet Update I'm trying to update a modified dataset into an Access DB. Everything seems to work okay and I've run AcceptChanges on the dataset, but the number of updated records is always zero!  - DataTable.Select Bug in .Net Framework 1.1 SP1 Once again I'm submitting a bug introduced with .Net Framework 1.1 SP1 that is breaking our application. We use DataTable.Select method all over our application. One of the places we use it is to filter some Entity information for permanent deletion from the database! We noticed that the code that worked perfectly for months stoped working with SP1 of .Net Framework 1.1 with information loss since there were database deletions! We use loads of filters like this one: "(HistoryStartDate >= #07/01/2004 00:00:00#) AND EntityId=7016 AND FieldId=70 AND Deleted=0" this worked perfectly without .Net Framework SP1 but not with SP1. We have put together a Test Harness (with source code) at: http://pwp.netcabo.pt/0434926301/ The sample default filter is the one specified above wich should return 0 rows when applied to the default sample data (TestData.XML - included with the Test Harness). The problem is that the Date part of the filter doesn't work properly and rows are returned. If you try to apply just the Date part of the filter to the same sample data no rows are returned (the expected result!). I have seen other threads reporting this problem but it seems like the guys at Microsoft aren't very concerned since there are no replies. If someone out there could help I would very mutch appreciate it. I tried everything I could remember but made no progress. This is a very serious problem for us. Thanks in advance.  - Trap rowchanged on DataTable I have a datagrid with a datatable as datasource, what I want to do is add a timestamp to a row (in a DateTime field) each time a Quantity field is filled. I've tried it with the grdColStyle4.textbox.TextChanged addhandler but since I can fill this field both by entering it manual or double clicking it it's not working well...  - editing in binding manager I need some help. Hopefully will be simple. Usually I have users edit data in a data grid and then I call the update routine if the dataset has changes. I have an instance where data is bound to text boxes on a form. If the user needs to edit the information in one or more of these text boxes, these edits are not being saved back to the database. If threw in an if statement (if ds.haschanges then update...) but when debugging it is seeing that the dataset does not have changes. So I take it that directly typing into a text box that is bound to a field in the dataset does not directly change that data and set that row to modified? What might I be doing wrong here?  - Crystal Report - From stored proc. to unbound fields Hi all, I'm actually filling a report created with CR, using a stored proc. The data is returned in an ouput parameter of ref cursor type, and retrieved from a dataset using ADO. To display the data on the report, i used unbound fields, as i have single values only. Meaning, my dataset has one row but with multiple columns, each of them, bound to my unbound fields. Those unbound fields were added to the Header section of the report, as they need to be displayed only once. That works perfectly, i bound them using this code from a class : FormulaFieldDefinitions fielddefs; fielddefs = myrpt.DataDefinition.FormulaFields; DataRow r = ds.Tables[0].Rows[0]; foreach(FormulaFieldDefinition f in fielddefs) { f.Text = r[f.Name].ToString(); } Reportviewer.ReportSource = myrpt; The name of each unbound field, has got the same name of the column name in my dataset. Ok, my question is, assuming i would now have several rows in my dataset, the data should normally be displayed in the details section. So , how to bind my unbound fields to the dataset in this case ? I've tried the SetDatasource method, but it didn't work. Any Idea ?  - TimeStamp with DataTable Hi! I have DataGrid bound to DataTable. I create DataTable "on fly" when application start without database connection. I use datagrid only to create simple XML-file for other purposes. Question: DataTable contains "Time"-column, and I need to get time into it automatically of the moment, when user adds a new row into DataGrid, but how to do it? It can't be only something like dc.DefaultValue = DateTime.Now; because time is not then time of the moment when DataGrid row was added by user. I think this must be easy, but I don't get it yet.  - More efficient way required. Hi I need a very efficient solution to a problem that I am sure must be a fairly common one. I have a web application that is database driven. The behaviour of the web site is goverened by various database settings, for example font-type, font-size as well as access to functionality (this function switched on/off) etc. For sake of simplicity, let us assume that all this information is held in three tables with almost identical schema. The first table contains all the settings for the Company, the next contains any over-rides required by a specific Department, and the third table contains all the over-rides required by a specific User. 4 use-case scenarios: + User A uses the company default values; the specific values in the Department and User tables are 'NULL'. + User B uses his Department values to over-ride the values in the Company table (his user record has 'NULL' + User C uses her own values to over-ride both the Company and the Department values. + User D uses his own values to over-ride the Company values; Department record contains 'NULL' So, the scenario is that the UI demands to know (say) 10 parameters for a particular user. Some values are therefore likely to come from all three tables. So, what is the fastest/most scalable way to achieve this (using VB.Net, ADO.NET, SQL)? The information will be READ only at this stage. [I am extremely new to .NET (VB6 back-ground) and THINK that I require a DataReader object to be returned to the UI, though am happy to be advised on this.] In VB6, I guess that I would have done this by: + The UI calls the BL asking for a particular User's settings. + The BL calls the DL asking for a hierarachical recordset (data-shaped). This contains the User record, the Department record and the Company record. + The BL then iterates through the User record - for every 'NULL' value it looks in the Department record and (if that's NULL too) in the Company record.  - Crystal report - failed in changing the Logon information at runtime all, I am having issue changing the DB logon information at the runtime when loading non-typed Crystal Report file to .NET WinForm application. I checked the connection string values and confirmed they are all correct. The error message and partial codes are listed below, except I replace the db connection string variables with string values. The similar logics works fine in typed-report(of course, using report class instead of ReportDocument). Based on all the document and sample I have, I can't think of anything missing?  - Setting a DateTime Parameter to DBNULL.Value I have a table with a DateTime column. I have a SQLDataAdapter which queries the table and then fills a TypedDataSet. The DataAdapter has a parameter value in the DateTime column. I want to find all the rows with nulls in this DataTime column. So, I set the ...SelectCommand.Parameters("Name of Parameter").Value = DBNULL.Value Even though I am certain there are rows with nulls in these columns, the query returns no rows.  - Dataset not populating Hi, I created a dataset by dragging a (SQL Server) stored procedure from the Servers pane. The dataset consists of three tables that are not linked (at least I do not enforce contraints). But when I try to populate the dataset by SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter.Fill(ds, tableName) I receive the following error: "Failed to enable constraints. One or more rows contain values violating non-null, unique, or foreign-key constraints." Please note that the same code works fine for a different dataset, so there are no syntax errors. I have checked that all the fields that are not marked as minOccurs="0" return not Null values; I even tried to set minOccurs="0" for all fields in the dataset - same result. Please help....  - No 'New' accessable with Data Set I have a dataset in a class library and when I try to create a new table in another project that has a reference to that dataset I'm getting the error "Overload resolution failed because no 'New' is accessible." There are a bunch of different tables in this dataset and there are only two that I'm having this problem with. I can instantiate all other tables just fine. I have tried completely deleting this dataset and re-creating it and these tables still have the same problem. If I go into the code behind the dataset I can see that the constructor and some other properties are marked as "friend" and I can manually change them to "public" and it fixes the problem but this means that if I ever re-generate those particular tables I have to manuall fix it again.  - Help! SqlHelper.FillDataset & connections question Has anyone seen this error? I'll try to explain in English because the code sample would be too big, but I can attach code if necessary... In my SaveButton_onClick event, I retrieve values off of my asp.net page, then I call a stored procedure to save the values. This process always works great the first time. On subsequent clicks of the same button (sometimes I change the data, but sometimes it's the same), I will get an exception thrown that includes the text: "Additional Information: A connection pooling error has occurred". In my aspx.vb on_click event, I create a Transaction that's passed into the SqlHelper.ExecuteScalar function to call the proc. After the data has been saved, I do myTransaction.Transaction.Commit(), then myTransaction = Nothing. I've tried myTransaction.Transaction.dispose(), and a number of other combinations. I cannot figure out what line causes the error. I have set right before everything that works with the connection, and sometimes I get this exception thrown right when I click the button, as if it's having a problem on the postback. I'm also using quite a number of Datasets to populate my page in the first place. Using the MS Application Block for data access, I use SqlHelper.FillDataset to populate each of 10 datasets on the page. SqlHelper has a bunch of overloaded FillDataset methods, but we're using one of the ones that just passes in a connection string (rather than an actual connection). Do you know if SqlHelper.FillDataset closes the database connection before it returns to the caller? I cannot decide whether I should just be passing in the same connection (pre-opened) to the FillDataset method, or if passing in the conx string is better/worse. I'm convinced that somehow I've got too many database conx open, but I don't know exactly how. Other info: I know my conx string is consistent because it's hidden in a class, that uses the same conx string no matter what database function I'm calling.  - How to position to row in DataView or DataTable Is it possible to position to a specific row in a DataTable or DataView? I have a DataGrid that displays either a detail view or a summary view and uses built-in paging. Both sets of data are from the same database table, the summary view is an aggregate (group by) with one less column than the detail view. When the user changes views, I execute the appropriate stored procedure and re-bind the results to the grid. The problem is I need to re-display the same page of records in the new view. In other words, if the record for company ABC was the first record displayed in the grid in one view, it needs to be the first record in the other view as well.  - Design issue with O/R mapping Hi. Im have asked for recommendation regarding the best production ready O/R mapping tools for .net. I got that. Since im an old, ok maybe not old, Java programmer patterns and developement with tiers is of great importance for me. I have a problem with the famours anti-pattern Tier leakage. In the Java world I used POJO´s (simple java classes) as value objects. These value objects was used for cayrring data between the tiers. So if i changed the persistence tier the rest of the code still relyed in the same POJO´s. Now with the .net O/R they all genereate eg. EmployeeEntity wich inherit from EntityBase2 (LLBL PRO). If I pass the object from my persistence layer to the business layer and down to the view I have just made a seriuos "maintaince bug" the "tier leakage". If i wanna use eg. the EntityBroker im so to say fucked. I have to refactor ALL and EVERY class witch depend on the EmployeEntity. Have anyone thougt about this and come up with an solution? Is the persistence tools wich can map PURE c# classes to realtionel classes as the Java Hibernate? And why have so few chosen this way of doing it? Is it hard to map eg. Customer c = new Customer(); // fill object adapter.SaveEntity(c); And go find what this Customer really maps to int the Database? Due to many reasons I do not wish to hard code the connection strings. I am using the Data Link API to obtain the connection strings at run time. The codes works fine with OLEDB to connect and run queries but with ODBC it generates a system error. I simply CANNOT figure out the following: 1. What is wrong with the ODBC connection string? 2.  - Best way to populate webpages from multiple tables Hi, We are in the process of designing an ASP.NET app, where a user will enter some 'Customer ID' to be queried in the database. If the ID is valid, several stored procedures will be called to populate multiple webpages containing customer information. There isn't a one-to-one correlation between the stored procedure and a webpage. In other words, a webpage may have to refer to 1 or more DataTables to populate itself. Therefore, a DataTable that was used to populate webpage1 will need to be kept to populate webpage2. In order to make this process quick and efficient, we are trying to devise an effective scheme. Here are a couple of options we've come up with. I would highly appreciate it, if you folks can give your comments and/or suggestions on this matter. Option 1: Object Model. Create a CustomerInfo Object with the necessary properties, and populate it (using a DataReader)with the values returned by calling each of the stored procedure, store the object in a session variable, and use it to populate the webpages. Option 2: Store each of the DataTables returned from the stored procedures in DataSet, save the DataSet in a session variable, and use it to populate each of the webpages. So, my question are... Is it worth creating a Customer object (option1) to populate the various pages, or is it just better to use a DataSet (option2), despite the fact it will be larger in size? BTW, we are estimating the size of the Customer object to be ~8-10K. How much extra overhead will a DataSet add? Also, we will be hosting the app on a webfarm, so the session variables will be saved on SQL server. And the information is needed only once to populate the pages.  - merge on datasets from join queries I have lookup/record selection grids bound to datasets with lists based on join queries. Periodically, I want to update these datasets to reflect changes made by other users. It seems the dataset.merge on the original dataset with a dataset of the refreshed records just duplicates the records. Although the list is a main table with PK and the other tables in the join query are just lookup values (leaving only one record per PK), the dataset merge does not work. Is this possible or is the only way to "refresh" a dataset based on a joined table to loop through and update each field? Note, I do not want to just re-fill the original dataset as it is bound to a grid and so all the event firing and other binding operations would be more difficult to handle. Thanks. from Database.
From Access this is very simple. Tools->Security->User and Group

You should be able to use Access DDL SQL to do this. See the Managing Security section in the below
