    - How to get Number of columns in a dataset How do you get the number of columns in a dataset? I know that I can get the number of rows by: DataSetObj.Tables(0).Rows.Count. Also, how do I get the name of the column. I can get to the data by name DataSetObj.Tables(0).Rows(ktr).Item("Name") Is there a way to find out what the of a column(item) is if you don't know it?     - getting the value of a datacolumn I have a combobox that list two items. Lets call it cbxCombo. I have a table extracted from an MS SQL database. This table has a column that will either be 1 or 2. If the value in the table is 1, the cbxCombo.SelectedIndex = 0. If the value in the table is 2 the cbxCombo.SelectedIndex = 1. How do I go about extacting that value from the column so that I can test it in an if statement. I'm using C# Ideally it would look something like this. if(dataset.datatable.Columns["column"] == 1) { cbxCombo.SelectedIndex = 0 } The data types in the "if" statements are different and I understand why it doesn't work.     - HELP PLEASE - SQLDMO ERROR Hi, I am using SQLDMO in my application to create data tables, full-text catalogs and jobs to populate the catalogs. My datatables are created successfully but I get error on line where it says : Dim oSQLServer as SQLDMO.SQLServer oSQLServer = new SQLDMO.SQLServer I have added reference to SQLDMO library (Name: Interop.SQLDMO) in my project (VB.NET 2003, Framework 1.1) The error message is: System.RuntimeInteropServices.COMException (0x80040154) COM Object with CLSID {classId} is either not valid or not registered.     - Getting Xml Data from String I have a proceedure that reads data from a Web Service. The data is sent back in a string. I can put this string into a Textbox, which works fine. I now need to get the data without the tags and was trying to use the ReadXml method of a DataSet object. Apparently, this only works with reading a file or datastream. How do I get the data into my DataSet from a string?     - using dataadapter.update changes the insertcommand.commandtext I have a dataadapter where i have changed the insertcommand.commandtext to have the following insert and select: "INSERT INTO my_table (col1) values (@p1); select scope_identity() as pk" I modify the dataset and perform an update on the dataadapter so the changes are reflected in the database like so: da.update(ds.tables("my_table").select(nothing, nothing, DataViewRowState.Added)) When I debug it, the dataset's identity column (pk) is not updated with what is in the database, and when I inspect the insertcommand.commandtext right after the update, I noticed that it has been truncated!! "INSERT INTO my_table (col1) values (@p1)" The select scope_identity portion is gone and hence my dataset's identity column is not updated. What's going on?     - ADO.NET, connection pooling and ASP.NET We're getting an occasional occurrence of the following error when two users try and open the same record in our ASP.NET app: "There is already an open DataReader associated with this Connection which must be closed first." As suggested, I was closing the connection in the Finally part of the outer Try but I wasn't closing the data reader as well so I assume that if the following happens, the above error could occur Try Open connection Open data reader Some operation causes the exception to fire Catch ex As Exception .. handle exception Finally Close the connection [data reader is still open here] End Try I've modified this to close the data reader as well in the Finally section but will have to wait until the next release to see if this resolves it. However, it raised a question about connection pooling, hence the post: Is connection pooling done in ASP.NET at a session, application or other level? When we look in SQL, we see various connections from the web server called ".Net SqlClient data provider". I understand the concept of connection pooling but what happens in the following situation: 1. User A opens web page causing an open connection, data read and close connection 2. Connection goes into the pool 3. User B opens same web page causing identical open connection, data read and close connection Does (3) re-use the connection opened by User A that's been put in the pool?     - Form Load -> show form... then do stuff Right now I have a vb.net windows form project that does a whole bunch of things on the form.load event. The problem with this is that the user does not see the form until all the those things are done. Is there a way for a form to be shown first AND THEN have it automatically start to run through my code? (perhaps a different event??? form.paint, form.activate) Right now... the form is running but the user can't see it, and so they end up clicking on the application to run again and the user thinks the program is slow... AND WE CAN'T HAVE THAT!!!! :) I would like: Basically the form would load i would have a status bar that says "loading data"... and then the form would then show the data once it's loaded Any help would be greatly appreciated!     - File format for a new application (I know it's a seond post, but I think I explain it better this way) -- On my own I'm writting an application for the general public. (a bit like word, except it has nothing to do with word ;-) So far I used an embeded database engine to store the data (SQLite), I like the concept because this way I could load/delete/updata whatever data I need incrementally on demand. And I could also easily perform search. What gets me more and more concerned is that creating a new (empty) file (with just about 10 table, 30 index & triggers) takes up to 7 seconds! Very bad user experience. I'm considering my options and will gladly takes advice as I'm a bit daunted by the work involve just to test. - I was thinking to try an other embeded database engine, such as Firefox. - I was thinking to use tar-gzipped serialized file (think XML serialization should be better as it would be probably be better at version resistance (but worst perf?)), but I was wondering about the wisdom of having all my data in memory... - any other ideas?     - Request For Opinion (data file performance). I'm writing a program at home for general public which store its data in a datafile. Fearing the data loading could be long, I used an embeded datafile engine (SQLite), because this way I could read/write/delete file incrementally (unlike what I could do with tar-gzipped XML file for example). Now I'm hitting a problem: When I create a new (empty) file, the (embeded) 'database engine' tooks about 7 seconds to create a new database file with about 10 tables & 30 indexes & trigger. That's wayyyy too long. So here is what I'm considering and would appreciate input on: - maybe try the firefox embeded version to see if it's faster - maybe used a plain tar-gziped XML serialized file - maybe used a plain tar-gzipped-serialized data file - use an other (free or cheap and royalty free) embeded database engine my concerns are the following: - if I use serialization I want a given version of the application to be able to read file created by previous and later version, which comdemn to XML serialization, I believe - If I use serialization I am concern about long startup if I have a lot of data, and heavy memory usage. - If I choose a DB, I don't want MSDE.. I already would have a 20MB dependency on .NET 2.0, I find it overkill to bloat it even more with: 20 more MB, a server based product, where as I would like a zero-config, zero install concerns, embeded DB engine as a simple DLL. - I though of Firebird, will table & file creatin be fast? Well in fact I'm a bit in the dark.. but I hope you guys see my problem and if any of you has experience on similar topic I will appreciate feedback...     - DataSet and MappingType Hi there, I've a problem with a DataSet in framework 2.0. In VS2003 I create a schema from my DataSet. For one attribute I used my own type. In VS2003 this works fine and I am able to load all corresponding xml-files. When I try to create the same DataSet in framework 2.0 I always get the error "Datatype myowntype should be mapped to MappingType.Element".     - Grouping?? Hello, I have a dataset that has rows with data that are all different. In some of the rows the "DescID" and "PlaceID" are the same, but primarilly they are all different. What I am trying to do is group all the rows that have the same DescID and PlaceID. If there are multiple rows with these two colomns being the same I need the Quantity Field to be increased by 1.     - HasChanges does not change even after EndCurrentEdit() is called HELP! I am losing my mind. I can't figure this out. I have a dataset and a textbox that is bound to it. I edit the textbox value and click a button to submit the changes to SQL CE server. I call EndCurrentEdit(), and then I check the value of HasChanges(). I always get a false. What am I doing wrong? I have used the designer to create a form with two DataGridView. I want to filter parent records so that only those which don't have child records are listed. In the Form_Load, I have created a DataView (dv) with filter : "ISNULL(Count(Child.ID),0)=0" (where ID is the primary key of Detail). I then Fill the datatables : Master, Detail. I then set the Master DataGridView's datasource property to dv. The problem that I have : When the Form is launched, the filtering is correctly done. Now, if I had a row in Master, then add a child row to Detail, the parent row in Master is still there !!! Does the rowfilter only work at Fill time ?     - Emergency! Too Busy A Connection! Hi. I have a problem with an OLEDBConnection object that is supposed to serve for a number of clients that need data from my Access(mdb) database. These clients are placed in different threads and try to load data from this connection. The problem is that when the connection is retrieving data for one of them, another one may ask for data. This throws an InvalidOperationException with the following message: "ExecuteReader requires an open and available connection. The connection's current state is Open, Executing." I fully understand its meaning, but what can I do to solve this issue? I tried a delaying loop, checking to see if the exception occurs again in the loop, and repeating the operation again. Although I used Application.DoEvents (you know what that does) , but a loop takes all the CPU time available, and it seems to me that the whole operation becomes very very slow and surprisingly, memory consuming! I like to ask anyone who can help me how to use mySQL database in
programming Visual Studio .Net Smart Device Application (.Net Compact
Framework). Specific question is it seems the System.Data namespace at this
application does not have the ODBC or OleDB namespace classes/objects. It
offers only for MS SQL CE. How can I go around this to be able to access and
